  • A critical issue in wireless sensor networks is an energy-efficiency since the sensor batteries have limited energy power and, in most cases, are not rechargeable. The most practical manner relate to this issue is to use a node wake-up scheduling protocol that some sensor nodes stay active to provide sensing service, while the others are inactive for conserving their energy. Especially, CTC (Connected Target Coverage) problem has been considered as a representative energy-efficiency problem considering connectivity as well as target coverage. In this paper, we propose a new energy consumption model considering multiple-targets and create a new problem, CMTC (Connected Multiple-Target Coverage) problem, of which objective is to maximize the network lifetime based on the energy consumption model. Also, we present SPT (Shortest Path based on Targets)-Greedy algorithm to solve the problem. Our simulation results show that SPT-Greedy algorithm performs much better than previous algorithm in terms of the network lifetime.

  • In centralized control system, complicated control systems including sensors, power supply and dampers should be required to satisfy the target response of large-scale structures. The practical applications of the centralized control system, however, is very difficult due to high order finite element model of structures, uncertainty of models, and limitations of the excitation system. In this study, the decentralized response-dependent MR damper of which magnetic field is automatically modulated according to the displacement or velocity transferred to the damper without any sensing and computing systems. this decentralized response-dependent MR damper are investigated according to the ranges of relative magnitude between the control force of MR damper and the story shear force of structures by nonlinear time history analysis. Finally, its performance is compared with centralized LQR algorithm which is used in general centralized control theory for a three story building structure.

  • Structural health monitoring to determine structural conditions at an early stage and to efficiently manage the energy requirements of buildings using systems that collects relevant data, is under active investigation. Structural monitoring requires cutting-edge technology in which construction, sensing, and ICT technologies are combined. However, the scope of application is limited because expensive sensors and specialized technical skills are often required. In this study, a Raspberry Pi module, one of the most widely used single board computers, a Lora module that is capable of long-distance communication at low power, and a high-performance accelerometer are used to construct a wireless edge computing system that can monitor building response over an extended time period. In addition, the Raspberry Pi module utilizes an edge computing algorithm, and only meaningful data is obtained from the vast amount of acceleration data acquired in real-time. The raw data acquired using Wi-Fi communication are compared to the Laura data to evaluate the accuracy of the data obtained using the system.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNT) were used as a catalyst support where catalytically active Pd and Pt metal particles decorated the outside of the external CNT walls. In this study, Pd and Pt nanoparticles supported on $HNO_3$-treated CNT were prepared by microwave-assisted heating of the polyol process using $PdCl_2$ and $H_2PtCl_6{\codt}6H_2O$ precursors, respectively, and were then characterized by SEM, TEM, and Raman. Raman spectroscopy showed that the acid treated CNT had a higher intensity ratio of $I_D/I_G$ compared to that of non-treated CNT, indicating the formation of defects or functional groups on CNT after chemical oxidation. Microwave irradiation for total two minutes resulted in the formation of Pd and Pt nanoparticles on the acid treated CNT. The sizes of Pd and Pt nanoparticles were found to be less than 10 nm and 3 nm, respectively. Furthermore, the $SnO_2$ films doped with CNT decorated by Pd and Pt nanoparticles were prepared, and then the $NO_2$ gas response of these sensor films was evaluated under $1{\sim}5\;ppm$ $NO_2$ concentration at $200^{\circ}C$. It was found that the sensing property of the $SnO_2$ film sensor on $NO_2$ gas was greatly improved by the addition of CNT-supported Pd and Pt nanoparticles.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel approach to optimize the movement of mobile sink node, called AMSP(Adaptive Mobile Sink Path) for mobile sensor network environments. Currently available studies usually suffer from unnecessary data transmission resulting from random way point approach. To address the problem, we propose a method which uses the Hilbert curve to create a path. The proposed method guarantees shorten transmission distance between the sink node and each sensor node by assigning orders of the curve according to sensor node density. Furthermore, The schedule of the sink node is informed to all of the sensing nodes so that the Duty Cycle helps the network be more energy efficient. In our experiments, the proposed method outperforms the existing works such as TTDD and CBPER by up to 80% in energy consumption.

  • This paper examines current developing status of space law as defined in terms of its unique principle that "the utilization of outer space for all mankind's interest". As commercialization of space activities has brought about heated debate on its legitimacy with respect to that principle, space law has come to witness a dual situation. One is the realization of that principle in establishing commercial space activities system where all mankind's interest is respected through the non-discriminatory distribution mode of space benefit. In satellite telecommunication system, the INTELSAT Organization assures its public service policy while protecting itself against a competition from separate systems. For remote sensing, commercialization of LANDSAT Systems promoted since 1984 seems not to affect present non-discriminatory distribution of data and information obtained. On the other hand, active participation of private entity aiming at commercial profit enables national government to manage more effective control and supervision of those activities with a view to promoting national interests. Also, newly developed private rules and regulations are emerging in business relations about commercial space activities. Extended capacity of national government assuring its national interest in production and distribution of international resources that is outer space, and regulation of space activities by newly developed rules and customs provoke a concern about a identity problem of space law. The best way to summarize this perspective might consist in saying that non space law regulations, which are not assumed as aiming at the promotion of all mankind's interest, are confirming their role about space related activities. For those reasous, we are now facing a developing status of space law as developments of commercial space activities continues.

  • Urchin-structured zinc oxide(ZnO) nanorod(NR) gas sensors were successfully demonstrated on a polyimide(PI) substrate, using single wall carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs) as the electrode. The ZnO NRs were grown with ZnO shells arranged at regular intervals to form a network structure with maximized surface area. The high surface area and numerous junctions of the NR network structure was the key to excellent gas sensing performance. Moreover, the SWCNTs formed a junction barrier with the ZnO which further improved sensor characteristics. The fabricated urchin-structured ZnO NR gas sensors exhibited superior performance upon $NO_2$ exposure with a stable response of 110, fast rise and decay times of 38 and 24 sec, respectively. Comparative analyses revealed that the high performance of the sensors was due to a combination of high surface area, numerous active junction points, and the use of the SWCNTs electrode. Furthermore, the urchin-structured ZnO NR gas sensors showed sustainable mechanical stability. Although degradation of the devices progressed during repeated flexibility tests, the sensors were still operational even after 10000 cycles of a bending test with a radius of curvature of 5 mm.

  • Chinese cabbage is one of the most important vegetables in Korea and a target crop for market stabilization as well. Remote sensing has long been used as a tool to extract plant growth, cultivated area and yield information for many crops, but little research has been conducted on Chinese cabbage. This study refers to the derivation of simple Chinese cabbage growth prediction equation by using RapidEye derived vegetation index. Daesan-myeon area in Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Korea is one of main producing district of Chinese cabbage. RapidEye multi-spectral imagery was taken on the Daesan-myeon five times from early September to late October during the Chinese cabbage growing season. Meanwhile, field reflectance spectra and five plant growth parameters, including plant height (P.H.), plant diameter (P.D.), leaf height (L.H.), leaf length (L.L.) and leaf number (L.N.), were measured for about 20 plants (ten plants per plot) for each ground survey. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for each of the 20 plants was measured using an active plant growth sensor (Crop $Circle^{TM}$) at the same time. The results of correlation analysis between the vegetation indices and Chinese cabbage growth data showed that NDVI was the most suited for monitoring the L.H. (r=0.958~0.978), L.L. (r=0.950~0.971), P.H. (r=0.887~0.982), P.D. (r=0.855~0.932) and L.N. (r=0.718~0.968). Retrieval equations were developed for estimating Chinese cabbage growth parameters using NDVI. These results obtained using the NDVI is effective provided a basis for establishing retrieval algorithm for the biophysical properties of Chinese cabbage. These results will also be useful in determining the RapidEye multi-spectral imagery necessary to estimate parameters of Chinese cabbage.

  • This study summarizes some important results from the studies on clouds and aerosols, and their effects on climate in the northeast Asia that were made mainly by Korean scientists and some other scientists from around the world. Clouds and aerosols are recognized as one of the most important factors that contributes to uncertainties in climate predictions and therefore become the subject of active research in the western developed countries in recent years. However, the researches on clouds and aerosols are very weakly done in Korea except ground based measurements of aerosol physical, chemical and optical properties. These measurements indicate that aerosol loadings in the northeast Asia are generally much higher than other parts of the world. On the other hand, researches on clouds are few in Korea. Satellite and ground remote sensing, numerical modeling and aircraft in-situ measurements of clouds are highly needed for better assessment of the role of clouds on climate in the northeast Asia.

  • The advances of semiconductor and circuitry technology dovetailed with nano processing techniques have further enhanced micro-miniaturization, sensitivity, longevity and reliability in MID(Medical Implant Device). Nevertheless, one of the remaining challenges is whether power can sufficiently and continuously be supplied for the operation of the MID. Self-powered MID that harvest biomechanical energy from human motion, respiratory and muscle movement are part of a paradigm shift. In this paper, we developed a rechargeable pacemaker through self-power generation with the triboelectric nanogenerator. We demonstrate a fully implanted pacemaker based on an implantable triboelectric nanogenerator, which act as a storage as well as active movement on a large-animal(dog) scale. The self-power pacemaker harvested from animal motion is 2.47V, which is higher than the required pacemaker device sensing voltage(1.35V).
