  • Piezoelectric composite films which are enabled by inorganic piezoelectric nanomaterials-embedded polymer, have attracted enormous attention as a sustainable power source for low powered electronics, because of their ease of fabrication and flexible nature. However, the absorption of applied stress by the soft polymeric matrices is a major issue that must be solved to expand the fields of piezoelectric composite applications. Herein, a flexible and porous piezoelectric composite (piezoelectric sponge) comprised of BaTiO3 nanoparticles and polydimethylsiloxane was developed using template method to enhance the energy conversion efficiency by minimizing the stress that vanishes into the polymer matrix. In the porous structure, effective stress transfer can occur between the piezoelectric active materials in compression mode due to direct contact between the ceramic particles embedded in the pore-polymer interface. The piezoelectric sponge with 30 wt% of BaTiO3 particles generated an open-circuit voltage of ~12 V and a short-circuit current of ~150 nA. A finite element method-based simulation was conducted to theoretically back up that the piezoelectric output performance was effectively improved by introducing the sponge structure. Furthermore, to demonstrate the feasibility of pressure detecting applications using the BaTiO3 particles-embedded piezoelectric sponge, the composite was arranged in a 3 × 3 array and integrated into a single pressure sensor. The fabricated sensor array successfully detected the shape of the applied pressure. This work can provide a cost-effective, biocompatible, and structural strategy for realizing piezoelectric composite-based energy harvesters and self-powered sensors with improved energy conversion efficiency.

  • This paper presents two-phase condensation heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of R32 and R454B as an alternative refrigerant to R410A in a 9.52 mm OD microfin tube. The test facility has a straight, horizontal test section with an active length of 2.0 m and is cooled by cold water circulated in a surrounding annular space. The heat transfer coefficients of the annular space were obtained using the modified Wilson plot method. Average condensation heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop data are presented at the condensation temperature of 35℃ for the range of mass flux 100-400 kg/m2s. The average condensation heat transfer coefficients of R32 refrigerant are 35-47% higher than R410A at the mass flux considered in the study, while R454B data are similar to R410A. The average pressure drop of R32 and R454B are much higher than R410A and they are 134-224% and 151-215% of R410A, respectively. R32 and R454B have relatively low GWP and high heat transfer characteristics, so they are suitable as alternatives for R410A.

  • This is a study which attempt to analyze changing patierns of economic active popu-lation, t o estimato- future patterns, and exa- mine vartons problems arises by changing c ire u mst ances of t he labor force market in- clunging soici al, economic ic, heathl th and demoi-graph ic aspects. We have constructed series of wotking life table which are useful in syt uiolyioig the lirocess of growth and structural change of labor force. Work i ng life tables represent ihie life eyele of econrmic' activity in hi ypothetical cohorts, that is. gen-erat i on of men Sn bject at eat' b period ot f their lives th given ra to's o mor tali it y and of par-- tici pation in economic activities. The tabloes prot' ide measorues of the alvet'age he ng t able of economically aeti \- e life. and agespecific rates of en trannee' into and retirement from the hahn' force. In const routing working life tables, age-specific activity rates and life tabole popula- titoto which represents contemporary condi-tions of moortality in Korea au'e the basic' maltoerials. We have derived the age-specific rates foorm economically active population survey, whoich were conducted by the Bureau of Statistics, Economic Planning Borard of the Korean government. Working life tables are constructed for men wtable these materi- als in the year of 1970, 1980 and 1988 by a modified Wolfbein-Wool's method. Some of the findings may be summerized as follow : 1) A central part of constructing working life table is calculation of stationary' economic active population, which represents the number of men in the stationtary population extoected to be in the labor force at each age group in the life span. The stationary economic active population by age have generally a universal pattern, where they rise sharply in the early twenties, approach its' peak in the thirties decline thereafter. at first graolually and then more rapidly at an advanced age. Korean men show the same general pa ttern of age distribution of stationary eco-- nomic active population with sharp increase hegining from the age interval of 20 to 24, reaching to maximum level at older age. The population. however, presumably, increased substantially due to increaseing school atte endance rates. Another difference exiSts in the youngest age groups, that is the activity rate in the year of 1988 is lower than that of Japan. The table shows an analysis of changes in the age distrihution of labor force between 1970, 1980 and 1988. 2) It was shown an analysis of changes in the age distribution and cause of separation from labor force. The entrance rate to labor force has increased from 18~\5 persons to 299 persons per 1000 head of stationary population between that of 1980 than that of 1988 for Korean men in 20~24 age group. The entrace rate to labor force shows a rapid entrance appearance concentrated on the 15~24 age group. The separation rate from labor force by retirment in Korea in the year of 1988 shows a great difference of the about four times as much as that of Japan. 3) The functions of table illustrate the patterns of working life of males in Korea in 1970, 1980 and 1988. The average remaining number of economically active years, e at age 15 in 1988 is 46.39 which is 2.12 years of increase compared with that of at age 15 in 1970,1980 and 1988 are 43.90,44.27 and 46.39 respectively, showing steadily increase dur- ing the past double decade the increase in the length of economically active life various age may be considered to have come both from extention of general life expectancy and from increasing entrance rate to economic activity in high age that of working is far greater in 1988 than that of 1980. The gaps between expectation of life and average remaining years of economically active widened due to rapid improvement of mortality level in Ko- rea. This observation together with the population pressure by the appearance of a group of younger population implies that constant increase of economically inactive population among older age group.

  • Implantable flexible sensor using polymer/metal multilayer processing technique for telemetrical real-time blood pressure monitoring is presented. The realized sensor is mechanically flexible, which can be less invasively implanted and attached on the outside of blood vessel to monitor the variation of blood pressure. Therefore, unlike conventional detecting methods which install sensor on the inside of vessel, the suggested monitoring method can monitor the relative blood pressure without injuring blood vessel. The major factor of sudden death of adults is a disease of artery like angina pectoris and myocardial infarction. A disease of circulatory system resulted from vessel occlusion by plaque can be preventable and treatable early through continuous blood pressure monitoring. The procedure of suggested new method for monitoring variation of blood pressure is as follows. First, integrated sensor is attached to the outer wall of blood vessel. Second, it detects mechanical contraction and expansion of blood vessel. And then, reader antenna recognizes it using telemetrical method as the relative variation of blood pressure. There are not any active devices in the sensor system; therefore, the transmission of energy and signal depends on the principle of mutual inductance between internal antenna of LC resonator and external antenna of reader. To confirm the feasibility of the sensing mechanism, in vitro experiment using silicone rubber tubing and blood is practiced. First of all, pressure is applied to the silicone tubing which is filled by blood. Then the shift of resonant frequency with the change of applied pressure is measured. The frequency of 2.4 MHz is varied while the applied pressure is changed from 0 to 213.3 kPa. Therefore, the sensitivity of implantable blood pressure is 11.25 kHz/kPa.

  • Twenty white rabbits anesthetized with nembutal (30 mg/kg) were employed in this experiment. Five of them served as controls; the remaining rabbits as experimental group were subjected to irreversible hemorrhagic shock. Shock was induced by bleeding the animals until mean blood pressure decreased to a level of 50-40 mmHg. This level of pressure was maintained for 3-4 hours, after which the drawn blood was reinfused. The reinfusion of blood caused the elevation of arterial pressure almost the control level for some minutes, after which a gradual and progressive decline of blood pressure became evident. This decline was thought to be the result from irreversible hemorrhagic shock. When mean blood pressure declined to less than 50 mmHg, chest was opened and samples of arterial blood and left ventricular muscle were taken. Left ventricular muscle and blood plasma were analyzed for potassium, sodium, chloride and water content. Blood glucose concentration was determined by Somogyi-Nelson's method. Extracellular and intracellular myocardial water and electrolyte content were calculated on the basis that electrolytes are distributed between plasma water and interstitial water according to Gibbs-Donnan equilibrium. In this calculation extracellular water was substituted for Na space. The findings obtained were as follows: 1. The concentration of blood glucose was 87mg% in the controls and it rose to 222 mg% in shock (P<0.01). 2. Plasma potassium elevated significantly from 3.3 mEq/l in controls to 8.0 mEq/l in shock (P<0.01), while small decreases in sodium (151-146 mEq/l) and chloride (102-96 mEq/l) were observed (P<0.3, P<0.1), 3. The changes of blood water content (83.1-84.3%) and cardiac water content (77.5-78.3 gm/100gm WT) were observed. 4. In control animals myocardial potassium levels which averaged 30.2 mEq/100 gmDT rose significantly to 40.3 mEq/100 gmDT in shock (P<0.01), while moderate decreases in sodium(16.3-14.3 mEq/100 gmDT) were observed in shock. 5. The calculated transmembrane resting potential of left ventricular muscle of control animals averaged 95 mV, while rabbits in shock averaged 77 mV. (P <0.01). The findings of this experiment do not correspond with the conclusions that myocardial depression seems to be the cause of irreversible hemorrhagic shock, because the excitability of heart muscle is elevated. From the point of view that the lowered transmembrane resting potential, the cause of death in terminal stage of irreversible hemorrhagic shock may be ventricular fibrillation. It can't be said, however, that the lowered transmembrane resting potential is responsible for the transition from reversible to irreversible hemorrhagic shock. The marked increase in blood glucose suggested that glycogenolysis in the liver is favorably active in shock.

  • In this study the suction pressure was measured with respect to operational time by submersing the multi-bore capillary membrane module in membrane bioreactor(MBR). The hexagonal shape capillary module which has the nominal pore size of 0.2 ㎛, outer diameter of 6.4 or 4.2 mm was immersed in MLSS 8,000 mg/L active sludge aqueous solution, and confirmed changes with respect to permeation flux and air flow rate. It was operated by the filtration/relaxation(FR), FR with backwashing(FR/BW), and sinusoidal flux continuous operation(SFCO) modes. The suction pressure for the SFCO and FR modes was lower at 30 and 50 L/m2·hr, respectively. In addition, the suction pressure of the module with a small outer diameter was relatively low. The suction pressure of a large outer diameter was greatly increased, but it could be reduced by more than 40% by backwashing.

  • Calculating the displacements of retaining walls under seismic loads is a crucial part in optimum design of these structures and unfortunately the techniques based on active seismic pressure are not sufficient alone for an appropriate design of the wall. Using limit analysis concepts, the seismic displacements of retaining walls are studied in present research. In this regard, applying limit analysis method and upper bound theorem, a new procedure is proposed for calculating the yield acceleration, critical angle of failure wedge, and permanent displacements of retaining walls in seismic conditions for two failure mechanisms, namely sliding and sliding-rotational modes. Also, the effect of internal friction angle of soil, the friction angle between wall and soil, maximum acceleration of the earthquake and height of the wall all in the magnitude of seismic displacements has been investigated by the suggested method. Two sets of ground acceleration records related to near-field and far-field domains are employed in analyses and eventually the results obtained from the suggested method are compared with those from other techniques.

  • Selective epitaxial growth (SEG) of silicon has attracted considerable attention for its good electrical properties and advantages in building microstructures in high-density devices. However, SEG problems, such as an unclear process window, selectivity loss, and nonuniformity have often made application difficult. In our study, we derived processing diagrams for SEG from thermodynamics on gas-phase reactions so that we could predict the SEG process zone for low pressure chemical vapor deposition. In addition, with the help of both the concept of the effective supersaturation ratio and three kinds of E-beam patterns, we evaluated and controlled selectivity loss and non-uniformity in SEG, which is affected by the loading effect. To optimize the SEG process, we propose two practical methods: One deals with cleaning the wafer, and the other involves inserting dummy active patterns into the wide insulator to prevent the silicon from nucleating.

  • The influence of argon, oxygen, and nitrogen admixtures on the dissociation of $Cl_2$ molecules in a glow discharge low-temperature plasma under the constant pressure conditions was investigated. For $Cl_2/Ar$ and $Cl_2/O_2$mixtures, the concentration of chlorine atoms was observed to be a practically constant at argon or oxygen concentrations up to 50%. This invariability is a most pro bably explained by relative increase in rate of $Cl_2$ direct electron impact dissociation due to the changes in electrophysical parameters of plasma such as EEDF, electron drift rate and mean energy. For all the considered mixtures, the contribution of stepwise dissociation involving active species from gas additives (metastable atoms and molecules, vibrationally excited molecules) was found to be negligible.

  • The use of plasma has increased in bio-application field in recent years. Particularly, water treated by arc discharge or atmospheric pressure plasma has been actively utilized in bio-industry. In this study, we have developed a plasma activated water generating system. For this system, two kinds of plasma sources; dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma and arc discharge plasma have been used. The discharge energy was calculated using the breakdown voltage and current, and the emission spectrum was measured to investigate the generated reactive species. We also analyzed the amount of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in water using the chemical methods and nitric oxide sensor. Finally, the influence of plasma generated reactive species on the germination and growth of spinach (Spinacia oleracea) was investigated. Spinach is a green leafy vegetable that contains a large amount of various physiologically active organic compounds. However, it is characterized with a low seed germination rate.
