Korean wastewaters have higher nitrogen concentrations than typical wastewaters of other countries. Most treatment processes such as activated sludge processes will need to supplement extra carbon sources for a complete removal of remaining nitrogen after the initial wastewater treatment, Because of these difficult matters, we have searched wastewater treatment methods that require no additional carbon sources. Wastewater treatment by microalgae in photobioreactors, using a green eukaryotic microalgae, Chlorella kessleri, showed a promising results and thus was selected to study further. This system is not intended to replace the conventional system but is to assist the existing biological treatment systems as a supplemental nitrogen removal process. Thus the secondary treated livestock wastewater was tested. Column type photobioreactors developed in our laboratory were used. When aerated with 5% CO$_2$ balanced with air at 1 vvm and illuminated at 100 ${\mu}$mol/㎡/s under 25$^{\circ}C$ and PH 7-8 by CO$_2$ buffering effect, the maximum nitrogen removal rate was 2.6 mg/L/hr. The results confirmed a possibility of microalgal wastewater treatment system as a secondary system to remove extra nitrogen sources. Based on these experimental results, the size of the optimal microalgal wastewater system was calculated. For the wastewater whose initial nitrogen concentration of 150 mg/L, the optimal batch system was found to be a 2 stage system with a combined retention time of 4.6 day. From the continuous experiments, nitrogen removal rates were examined under different dilution rates and 2 stage system was also found to be the optimal system. The combined retention time for the continuous system was 3.5 days. It is expected that conventional biological wastewater treatment systems followed by microalgal systems would reliably decrease the nitrogen concentration below the government criteria even for the livestock wastewater with low C/N ratio.
To improve T-N and T-P removal efficiencies, removal efficiencies of pollutants in full-scale livestock wastewater treatment plant by natural purification method with water plant filtration and activated sludge beds were investigated under different re-injection rates and injection methods of livestock wastewater. The removal rates of COD, SS, T-N, and T-P in effluent in full-scale livestock wastewater treatment plant were in the order of 30% < 70% ${\leq}$ 100 % at different re-injection rates. The removal rates of pollutants in effluent in full-scale livestock wastewater treatment plant were higher as re-injection rate of livestock wastewater increased. Removal rates of COD, SS, T-N, and T-P by continuous injection were slightly higher than those by intermittent injection method in full-scale livestock wastewater treatment plant. Removal rates of COD, SS, T-N, and T-P by continuous injection method in full-scale livestock wastewater treatment plant with water plant filtration and activated sludge beds were 99.5, 99.8, 99.0 and 99.8%, respectively.

The effect of the COD/N ratio on denitrification characteristics was evaluated for the development of a denitrification process. Activated sludge, acclimated to an anoxic condition, was used as the denitrifier consortium (mixture of denitrifying organisms) for enhanced nitrogen removal in a recirculating aquarium system. Synthetic wastewater containing nitrate was used as the influent solution and glucose was used as the carbon source for denitrification. The COD/N ratio varied within a range of 1.5-7.2. The denitrification efficiency was higher than 97% even at a COD/N ratio of 1.5. Under a theoretical COD/N ratio of 3.0, nitrite was detected, however, the amount was less than 1% of the total influent nitrogen. The number of both nitrate-reducing bacteria and denitrifying bacteria reached $3.5{\times}10^5/ml$ with a COD/N ratio of 1.5 after 45 days of operation.
A laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the treatment of photographic processing wastewater by chemical oxidation and biological treatment system. The effect of reaction conditions such as hydrogen peroxide dosage, ferrous sulfate dosage and pH on the COD removal in Fenton oxidation were investigated. The optimal dosage of hydrogen peroxide was 2.58 M and 3.87 M for the developing and fixing process wastewater, respectively. The Fenton oxidation was most efficient in the pH range of 3-5 and the optimal condition for initial reaction pH was 5 for a developing process wastewater. With iron powder catalyst, the COD for a developing process wastewater was removed in lower pH than with ferrous sulfate catalyst. The removal efficiency of COD for refractory compounds such as Diethyleneglycol, Benzylalcohol, Hydroxylamine Sulfate, Ammonium Thiosulfate, Ammonium Ferric EDTA and Disodium EDTA in the photogaphic wastewater was found than 90% except Potassium Carbonate. When the photographic processing wastewater after pretreatment by Fenton oxidation was treated with batch activated sludge process, the addition of $KH_2PO_4$ as a phosphorous compound improved the removal efficiency of COD. During the continuous biological treatment of developing and fixing process wastewater after pretreatment by Fenton oxidation, the effluent COD concentration less than 100 mg/l was obtained at 0.425 and 0.25 kgCOD/m$^3$.d, respectively.
The treatment efficiencies of domestic sewage treatment processes were analysed and assessed to suggest and design a suitable technology for coal seam gas (CSG) water treatment. Two sewage treatment plants (S and G in Busan) were selected. The former operates with standard activated sludge and modified Ludzak Ettinger processes while the later uses the combination of $A_2/O$ and gravity fiber filtration. For both plants, the concentrations of BOD, $COD_{Mn}$, T-N and T-P were about 5.0, 19.0, 5.0, 11.0 and 1.0 ppm, respectively, which satisfy the discharge standards. Therefore, although sewage treatment processes seems to be applicable for CSG water treatment, additional processes to remove total dissolved solids and ionic compounds (i.e. bicarbonate) need to be introduced to produce fit-for-purpose water resources for beneficial use (in accordance with Water ACT 2013). This, for the CSG treatment process design, it is necessary to align the operating conditions with merging methods of combinable unit technology obtained from sewage treatment processes.
Electrochemically active bacteria were successfully enriched in an electrochemical cell using a positively poised working electrode. The positively poised working electrode (+0.7 V vs. Ag/AgCl) was used as an electron acceptor for enrichment and growth of electrochemically active bacteria. When activated sludge and synthetic wastewater were fed to the electrochemical cell, a gradual increase in amperometric current was observed. After a period of time in which the amperometric current was stabilized (generally 8 days), linear correlations between the amperometric signals from the electrochemical cell and added BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) concentrations were established. Cyclic voltammetry of the enriched electrode also showed prominent electrochemical activity. When the enriched electrodes were examined with electron microscopy and confocal scanning laser microscopy, a biofilm on the enriched electrode surface and bacterium-like particles were observed. These experimental results indicate that the electrochemical system in this study is a useful tool for the enrichment of an electrochemically active bacterial consortium and could be used as a novel microbial biosensor.
A laboratory-scale experiment was conducted to investigate control of soluble microbial products (SMP) by the internal recycle rate in the submerged membrane separation activated sludge process. The internal recycle rate of the reactor RUN 1 and RUN 2 were 100 % and 200 %, respectively. SMP concentration was rapidly accumulated in the reactor (RUN 1). The variation of accumulated SMP concentration was related to the denitrification rate at the beginning experiment however SMP concentration decreased without correlatively to the denitrification rate during long operation time. The microbial kinetic model was rapidly presented in the both microbial growth and extinction in the reactor (RUN 1). In the SMP kinetic model, Internal recycle rate is the lower, value of UAP and BAP which SMP matter were presented low. The study about development of kinetic model is relatively well adjusted to the experiment exception SMP. In the future, SMP formation equation must be thought that continually research is necessary.
A denitrifying polyphosphate-accumulating bacterium (YKP-9) was isolated from activated sludge of a 5-stage biological nutrient removal process with step feed system. This organism was a Gram-negative, coccus-shaped, facultative aerobic chemoorganotroph. It had a respiratory type of metabolism with oxygen, nitrate, and nitrite as terminal electron acceptors. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain YKP-9 was most similar to the 16S rRNA gene sequence of Paracoccus sp. OL18 (AY312056) (similarity level, 97%). Denitrifying polyphosphate accumulation by strain YKP-9 was examined under anaerobic-anoxic and anaerobic-oxic batch conditions. It was able to use external carbon sources for polyhydroxyalkanoates(PHA) synthesis and to release phosphate under anaerobic condition. It accumulated polyphosphate and grew a little on energy provided by external carbon sources under anoxic condition, but did neither accumulate polyphosphate nor grow in the absence of external carbon sources under anoxic condition. Cells with intracellular PHA cannot accumulate polyphosphate in the absence of external carbon sources under anoxic condition. Under oxic condition, it grew but could not accumulate polyphosphate with external carbon sources. Based on the results from this study, strain YKP-9 is a new-type denitrifying polyphosphate-accumulating bacterium that accumulates polyphosphate only under anoxic condition, with nitrate and nitrite as the electron acceptors in the presence of external carbon sources.

A lot of water is using in the paper mill for dilution, washing, sealing, and other process operation. As the regulation of water environment has been more tightened than ever before, water management in the paper mill becomes the most important task. Topics on reducing fresh water and increasing recycling water have been studied. Further, an interest in zero-effluent system has been increased. The pH of waste water in paper mill is usually weak acidic or neutral. The waste water in the paper mill includes water insoluble organic materials that are not easy to be dissolved in the water, inorganic materials that never react with water and chemical additives that are used to recycled fiber. This study investigated on the effect of various materials used in paper mill on COD. This data could be used to control the environmental load in paper mill. COD caused by raw materials and NBDCOD (Non Bio Degradable COD) after the activated sludge process are investigated in this study. Results obtained in this study can be used in a simulation program designed to control environmental load in the paper mill.
An efficient Treatment of animal wastewater is one of the hot issues for preventing the environmental pollution. It should be established the design parameter in order to purify the animal wastewater. A test is carried on in the pilot plant as a simplified activated sludge process. A vibration sieve separator is deviced to keep the pollution load constant by means of separation of solid matter. The BOD removal efficiency of the vibration sieve showed over 50%. As the test results, the BOD contents of the influent was in average of 3,000 mg/I and that of the effluent 85 mg/I. So, the BOD removal rate showed 97% in average. The SS-contents in the primary chamber was about 3,300 mg/I and that of effluent 92 mg/I. The SS removal efficiency showed 97%. The removal rate of total nitrogen and phosphore were in average of 82% respectively. Carrying out in winter season, it showed relatively good results; The design parameter approved in this test can be applied to the full-time farmers.
