Synthesis of Eco-Friendly High Solid Acrylic Resins and Curing Properties of Acrylic Urethane Resin Coatings (환경 친화형 하이솔리드 아크릴수지의 합성과 아크릴 우레탄 도료의 경화 특성)

  • In this study, acrylic resins with solids content of 75% were prepared by addition polymerization of n-butyl acrylate (BA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) and acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate (AAEM) monomers. At this time, the glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of the acrylic resin was changed to 20, 30 and $40^{\circ}C$, and the hydroxyl value (OH value) was changed to 60, 90 and 120. As a result, the viscosity of acrylic resin increased with increasing $T_g$ and hydroxyl (OH) value. The synthesized acrylic resin was designed to have a high cross-link density to maintain high elasticity and high durability. The crosslinked acrylic resin was used to prepare an acrylic urethane clear coating by curing reaction with a block isocyanate (Desmodur BL-3175). The physical properties of the clear paints were analyzed by measuring viscosity, adhesion, pencil hardness and $60^{\circ}$ specular gloss. Acrylic urethane clear coatings were prepared as specimens and evaluated for various properties to be applied as top coatings for coil coating. The prepared coatings were excellent in adhesion, excellent in $60^{\circ}$ specular gloss and pencil hardness, and eco-friendly.

  • This paper was made to evaluate the effect of the type of latex for coating on the printability by investigating the structure of pore such as the pore fraction, the number of pores, pore size and distribution of coated paper. The coated structure is mainly depend on the results of interaction between pigment and binder. It means that the structure of pore formed is chiefly affected by the type of latex. This physical properties of pore have a close relation with ink set-off associated with the drying rate, the speed of penetration of ink into base paper and printing gloss. Therefore it was necessary to find out the relationship between pore structure and the performance of printability by modifying the type of latex to vary the pore structure of coated paper. Acrylic latex was superior to S/B latex in the sedimentation volume, compressibility, smoothness, pore fraction and its number, the weight of transferred ink onto the coated paper and ink repellance. In contrast, water retention and ink setting were not good. in the comparison of anionic and amphoteric latex, amphoteric latex showed better performance in the thickness, smoothness, pore fraction and its number, pore size, the weight of ink transmitted and K&N ink receptivity, etc.

Effect of Vinyl Acetate-Ethylene(VAE) Emulsion on Coated Paper Properties (비닐아세테이트 에틸렌 공중합체 바인더가 도공지의 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was focused on applying a new paper coating binder, vinyl acetate-ethylene(VAE) emulsion, with SB-latex and acrylic emulsion for paper coating application. VAE emulsion has a low monomer cost and is non-toxic chemical than conventional adhesive for paper coating such as styrene-butadiene latex( SB-latex) and acrylic emulsion. We conducted double coating in order to test VAE emulsion, which was applied on top surface only. The results showed that optical properties of the coated paper with VAE were similar with the SB-latex binders. In case of bonding strength, dry-pick of the coated paper with VAE showed almost same with other binders while wet-pick of the coated paper with VAE had a little bit lower strength than that with SB-latex.

Salt damage resistance of mortar substrate coated by the urethane and acrylic waterproofing membranes (우레탄계와 아크릴계 도막 방수재가 도포된 바탕 모르타르의 염해 저항성 평가)

  • The salt damage resistance of waterproofing membrane was evaluated on the cracked mortar substrate. The types of specimens are urethane, acrylic waterproofing membrane, and no coating mortar substrate. After these specimens were cured by water curing for 4 weeks, they were cured by atmospheric curing at 20±2Co for 8 weeks. The salt water immersion test was carried out by following KS F 2737, and the penetration depth of chloride ion into substrate was measured in 1, 4, 8, and 13 weeks. As a result, in the case of non coating specimen, the chloride ion penetrated within one week. In the coated specimens, a regardless of the membrane type, the chloride ion did not penetrate during 13 weeks-tests on condition that the cracked width of substrate is less than 0.3mm. Also, the penetration speeds of the coated specimens were lower than that of non coating specimen. Therefore, our results reached a conclusion that waterproofing membrane has high salt damage resistance.

  • This study was carried out in order to manufacture the high quality coated paper. High quality coated paper includes not only present state but also the state of the future. So in this study, acrylic-styrene emulsion which polymerized in laboratory was compared with SB(Styrene-butadiene) latex during thermal aging. The coated paper with three different formulations which controlled the dosage of acrylic-styrene emulsion were prepared. The coated paper were thermally aged at $105^{\circ}C$ for 18days and the optical properties were measured. Brightness, whiteness and CIE L value were higher during thermal aging with increasing amount of acrylic-styrene emulsion. CIE $a^*$ value was higher and CIE $b^*$ value decreased with increasing amount of acrylic-styrene emulsion. These results indicate that high quality coated paper which has anti -thermal aging property can be manufactured with acrylic-styrene emulsion.

  • Waterborne polyurethane dispersions (PUD) were synthesized from isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), polycarbonate diol (PCD) and dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) as starting materials. Subsequently, waterborne polyurethane-acrylic hybrid solutions were prepared by reacting the PUD with different amounts of the mixture of acrylate monomers, HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and MMA (methyl methacrylate). As a result, the average particle size of waterborne polyurethane-acrylic hybrid solutions was increased with increasing the addition amounts of acrylate monomers. Also, the prepared coating films from waterborne polyurethane-acrylic hybrid solutions showed better abrasion resistance and chemical resistance than those of pure PUD.

  • Acrylic resin has some disadvantages in its physical properties such as a low surface hardness, being easily abraded as well as low degree of impact resistance. To overcome these disavantages, Perma Cure System was introduced in 1981, in which photo polymerizing monomers coated on acrylic resin surface were polymerized. In this study, to observe the effect of Perma Cure System on physical properties of treated surface of different types of acrylic resin, abrasion resistance, surface hardness and surface roughness of 4 different types of resin (Premium, Ortho-jet acrylic, Quick resin, Thermo jel) were tested before and after coating treatment. The conclusions arised from this study are as follows; 1. In all types of resin, the abrasion resistance of coated specimen was higher than that of uncoated specimen, and there was difference in amount of abrasion among the types of coated resin. 2. In all types of resin, the surface hardness of coated specimen was higher than that of uncoated specimen, and there was no difference in surface hardness among the types of coated resin. 3. In all types of resin, surface roughness of coated specimen was lower than that of uncoated specimen, and was different according to the degree of surface roughness before coating treatment in same sort of resin specimen.

Preparation and Characteristics of Transparent Anti-static Films (투명 대전방지 필름 제조 및 특성)

  • In order to develop the transparent anti-static film with higher than 80% transparency to visible light, organic conductive compounds, N-methyl phenazinium 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinonedimethane (TCNQ) com-plex salts was synthesized and bar-coated on the polythylene terephthalate (PET) film using polymer binders. The best surface properties were obtained when acrylic binder was used. A single layer of TCNQ made of a acrylic binder showed a surface resistance of 10\ulcorner $\Omega$/ , a conductivity of 10\ulcorner S/cm, and a transparency of 75%. An optical microscopic examination revealed that the binder was first solidi-fied on the surface of PET film over which the needle-shaped TCNQ crystals were grown. An acrylic polyol coating over the TCNQ layer improved the transparency to 87%, becuase the acrylic polyol covers the surface of TCNQ crystals to reduce the surface roughness. This conductive material has thermal stability at room temperature and 4$0^{\circ}C$ over 4,000 h.

  • Quater polymer(MBHA) containing two types of acrylic functional group, acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate(AAM) and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate was prepared. Then, the MBHA was blended with polyisocyanate type Desmodur IL as a curing agent. Thereafter the mixture was cured at room temperature to get high solid acrylic/polyisocyanate. The MBHA was synthesized at $150^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours typically, and the final conversion reached 87-88%. Lowering Tg and increasing AAM amount in the MBHA resulted in high value of conversion. There was no difference in conversion with the variations of OH values. From the results of physical property tests, MIHS coating was proved to be a good automotive top-coating material.

Preparation and Physical Properties of High-Solids Acrylic/Urea Coatings (하이솔리드 아크릴/우레아 도료의 제조와 도막물성 연구)

  • Environmental friendly acrylic/urea high-solid paint(MUHC) were prepared through the curing reaction of acrylics resin(EBHC) containing 70wt% of solids content and butylated urea curing agent. The synthesis of EBHC Was done at $150^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours, and the results were obtained as follows : $M_{n}=1830{\sim}2190$, $M_{w}$ $3290{\sim}4000$, $M_{w}/M_{n}$=1.80{\sim}1.83$ viscosity=$110{\sim}352$ cps, and conversion=$82{\sim}92$%. After the film was coated with MUHC, the various physical properties were measured. They showed that enhancement of the coating properties such as adhesion, flexibility, abrasion resistance, impact resistance, and water resistance could be expected through introdl1cing caprolactone acrylate component in acrylics resin for the high-solids content acrylics/urea coatings.
