Conditional Signal-Acquisition Parameter Selection for Automated Satellite Laser Ranging System

  • An automated signal-acquisition method for the NASA's space geodesy satellite laser ranging (SGSLR) system is described as a selection of two system parameters with specified probabilities. These parameters are the correlation parameter: the minimum received pulse number for a signal-acquisition and the frame time: the minimum time for the correlation parameter. The probabilities specified are the signal-detection and false-acquisition probabilities to distinguish signals from background noise. The steps of parameter selection are finding the minimum set of values by fitting a curve and performing a graph-domain approximation. However, this selection method is inefficient, not only because of repetition of the entire process if any performance values change, such as the signal and noise count rate, but also because this method is dependent upon system specifications and environmental conditions. Moreover, computation is complicated and graph-domain approximation can introduce inaccuracy. In this study, a new method is proposed to select the parameters via a conditional equation derived from characteristics of the signal-detection and false-acquisition probabilities. The results show that this method yields better efficiency and robustness against changing performance values with simplicity and accuracy and can be easily applied to other satellite laser ranging (SLR) systems.

Performance Evaluation of Access Channel Slot Acquisition in Cellular DS/CDMA Reverse Link

  • In this paper, we consider the acquisition performance of an IS-95 reverse link access channel slot as a function of system design parameters such as postdetection integration length and the number of access channel message block repetitons. The uncertainty region of the reverse link spreading codes compared to that of forward link is very small, since the uncertainty region of the reverse link is determined by a cell radius. Thus, the parallel acquisiton technique in the reverse link is more efficient than a serial acquisition technique in terms of implementation and of acquisition time. The parallel acquisition is achieved by a bank of N parallel I/Q noncoherent correlator are analyzed for band-limited noise and the Rayleigh fast fading channel. The detection probability is derived for multiple correct code-phase offsets and multipath fading. The probability of no message error is derived when rake combining, access channel message block combining, and Viterbi decoding are applied. Numerical results provide the acquisition performance for system design parameters such as postdetection integration length and number of access channel message block repetitions in case of a random access on a mobile station.

  • We intended to show some basic requirements for spectrum analysis of electroencephalogram (EEG) by visualizing the differences of the results according to different values of some parameters for analysis. Spectrum analysis is the most popular technique applied for the quantitative analysis of the electroen- cephalographic signals. Each step from signal acquisition through spectrum analysis to presentation of parameters was examined with providing some different values of parameters. The steps are:(1) signal acquisition; (2) spectrum analysis; (3) parameter extractions; and (4) presentation of results. In the step of signal acquisition, filtering and amplification of signal should be considered and sampling rate for analog-to-digital conversion is two-time faster than highest frequency component of signal. For the spectrum analysis, the length of signal or epoch size transformed to a function on frequency domain by courier transform is important. Win dowing method applied for the pre-processing before the analysis should be considered for reducing leakage problem. In the step of parameter extraction, data reduction has to be considered so that statistical comparison can be used in appropriate number of parameters. Generally, the log of power of all bands is derived from the spectrum. For good visualization and quantitative evaluation of time course of the parameters are presented in chronospectrogram.

Quantitative Measurements of 3-D Imaging with Computed Tomography using Human Skull Phantom

  • As an advancement of medical imaging modalities and analyzing software with multi-function, active researches to acquire high contrast and high resolution image being done. In recently, development of medical imaging modalities like as Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is aiming to display anatomical structure more accuracy and faster. Thus, one of the important areas in CT today is the use of CT scanner for the quantitative evaluation of 3-D reconstruction images from 2-D tomographic images. In CT system, the effective slice thickness and the quality of 3-D reconstructed image will be influenced by imaging acquisition parameters (e.g. pitch and scan mode). In diagnosis and surgical planning, the accurate distance measurements of 3-D anatomical structures play an important role and the accuracy of distance measurements will depend on the acquisition parameters such as slice thickness, pitch, and scan mode. The skull phantom was scanned with SDCT for various acquisition parameters and acquisition slice thicknesses were 3 and 5 mm, and reconstruction intervals were 1, 2, and 3 mm to each pitch. 3-D visualizations and distance measurements were performed with PC based 3-D rendering and analyzing software. Results showed that the image quality and the measurement accuracy of 3-D SDCT images are independent to the reconstruction intervals and pitches.

Development of a Data Acquisition System for the Testing and Verification of Electrical Power Quality Meters

  • This paper presents the development of a software supported acquisition system for metrological verification and testing of the equipment for monitoring and analysis of the basic electrical power quality parameters. The described procedure consists of two functionally connected segments. The first segment involves generation of the reference three-phase voltage signals, including the possibility of simulation of the various power quality disturbances, typical for electrical power distribution networks. The second part of this procedure includes the real-time recording of power quality disturbances in three-phase distribution networks. The procedure is functionally supported by the virtual instrumentation concept, including a software application developed in LabVIEW environment and data acquisition boards NI 6713 and NI 9215A. The software support of this system performs graphical presentation of the previously generated and recorded signal waveforms. A number of the control functions and buttons, implemented on the virtual instrument front panels, are provided to adjust the basic signal acquisition, generation and recording parameters.

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of double-dwell hybrid initial acquisition in a direct sequence ultra-wideband (DS-UWB) system via detection, miss, false alarm probabilities, and mean acquisition time. In the analysis, we consider the effect of the acquisition sequence as well as the deployment scenario of the abundant multipath components over small coverage of the piconet in the DS-UWB system. Based on the simulation, we obtain various performance measures for the mean acquisition time by varying parameters such as the total number of hypotheses to be searched, subgroup size, and dwell time. We thereupon suggest the optimum parameter set for the initial acquisition in the DS-UWB system.

산림조사에서의 항공라이다 취득인자에 따른 영향분석을 위한 시뮬레이션 모델 개발 (A Simulation Model Development to Analyze Effects on LiDAR Acquisition Parameters in Forest Inventory)

  • 상용화된 항공라이다 기술을 이용한 자료취득의 비용소요는 여전히 큰 부담이어서 다양한 자료취득조건에 따른 자료취득 및 그에 따른 영향에 관한 연구는 미진한 편이다. 이에 본 연구는 3차원상에서 산림모델 및 항공라이다의 자료취득모델을 구현하여 이들을 토대로 다양한 자료취득조건에 따른 가상의 자료취득과 그에 따른 산림생장특성의 추정을 통해 적정한 자료취득조건을 구명하고자 수행하였다. 우선, 3차원의 입목모델을 규정하고 이 입목들의 식재간격 및 산림내 식생층위를 가변적으로 조절하여 가상의 산림모델들을 작성하였다. 아울러, 항공라이다 자료취득활동을 반영한 모델을 구현하고 주요 자료취득인자인 비행고도를 조절하여 다양한 취득밀도를 지닌 가상의 자료를 획득하였다. 이 자료들로부터 3차원 임관의 체적, 표준지 내 최대수고를 추정하여 자료취득밀도에 따른 추정결과의 차이를 비교분석하였다. 그 결과, 자료취득밀도가 높을수록 산림생장특성의 추정결과가 기대치에 근접하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구의 성과는 향후, 산림조사에서의 정확성 대비 항공라이터 취득비용에 관한 연구 등을 수행하면 다양한 산림생장특성의 정확성 수준에 따른 적정 예산수립 등에 도움을 줄 것으로 판단된다.

  • We developed a real-time three-polarizer spectroscopic ellipsometer based on a new data acquisition algorithm and a general data reduction (the process of extracting the ellipsometric sample parameters from the Fourier coefficients). The data acquisition algorithm measures Fourier coefficients of radiant flux waveform accurately and precisely. The general data reduction is introduced to represent the analytic functions of the standard uncertainties of the ellipsometric sample parameters, and the extracted theoretical values closely agree with the corresponding experimental data. Our approach can be used for optimization of measurement conditions, instrumentation, simulation, standardization, laboratory accreditation, and metrology.

  • Although artifacts in tomographic imaging can arise from a number of sources, this case presents an artifact caused by using inadequate acquisition parameters which do not match the collimator with which a camera equipped in Tc-99m ECD brain SPECT. Whenever the collimator in tomographic studies is changed, we should take care to use suitable parameters of acquisition protocol according to the collimator with which a camera is fitted. Other ways to prevent an error of this type is to use a point source.
