  • In droplet microfluidics, precise droplet manipulation is required in numerous applications. This study presents ultrasonic surface acoustic wave (USAW)-based microfluidic device for label-free droplet separation based on size. The proposed device is composed of a slanted-finger interdigital transducer on a piezoelectric substrate and a polydimethylsiloxane microchannel placed on the substrate. The microchannel is aligned in the cross-type configuration where the USAWs propagate in a perpendicular direction to the flow in the microchannel. When droplets are exposed to an acoustic field, they experience the USAW-induced acoustic radiation force (ARF), whose magnitude varies depending on the droplet size. We modeled the USAW-induced ARF based on ray acoustics and conducted a series of experiments to separate different-sized droplets. We found that the experimental results were in good agreement with the theoretical estimation. We believe that the proposed method will serve as a promising tool for size-based droplet separation in a label-free manner.

  • This paper presents fault detection in cables. We developed the device for detecting pinpoint location of faults in power cables using acoustic method. The proposed device consists of hardware and software for the fault detection. Using the device, we explain how to detect the pinpoint of faults and introduce that the other method use the time delay between electro-magnetic and acoustic signals for the pinpoint of the faults.

  • A new type of piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducer (pMUT) with high resonant frequency was developed by using a thin lead zirconate titanate (PZT) as an insulation layer on a floating $10{\mu}m$ silicon membrane. The PZT insulation layer facilitated acoustic impedance matching at active pMUT, leading to a high performance in the acoustic conversion property compared with the transducer using $SiO_2$ insulation layer. The fabricated ultrasonic devices were wirelessly measured by connecting two identical acoustic transducers to two separate ports in a single network analyzer simultaneously. The acoustic wave emitted from a transducer induced a $3.16{\mu}W$ on the other side of the transducer at a distance of 2 cm. The transducer performances in terms of device diameters, PZT thickness, annealings, and different DC polings, etc. were investigated. COMSOL simulation was also performed to predict the device performances prior to fabrication. Based on the COMSOL simulation, the device was fabricated and the results were compared.

  • For the purpose of the acoustic performance evaluation of noise reduction device(NRD) installed at the top of noise barrier for further decreasing of noise level of 400km/h class high-speed railroad(HEMU), the acoustic performance test method using speaker instead of really running railway vehicle was suggested in this paper. For this, noise source location and frequency spectrum of HEMU was analyzed through the field noise test. These data were used for the determination of speaker's installation positions and frequency correction values applied to the speaker noise source. And, 400 meters long NRD was installed at the site where HEMU will be running at a speed of 400km/h. Finally, the outdoor speaker test with and without NRD showed that this NRD could decrease noise level even more than 3dB(A). In the future, the acoustic performance results of NRD conducted with speaker test will be compared with that of field test for HEMU running at a speed of 400km/h.

  • The purpose of this paper was to identify the mechanism that caused abnormal vibration and noise on the piping system connected to discharge flow of BFP(Boiler Feed water Pump) in a coal fired power plant, and to develop the device that can reduce the level of abnormal vibration and noise. Major results of this project can be summarized as follows: First, we analyzed the acoustic mode for the discharge piping of BFP to trace a path of the noise, and assumed that noise and vibration on the piping system can be related with length of pipe. Second, a minimized model of the piping system was set up to simulate abnormal vibration and noise within the specific range of operating frequencies, and as a result we confirmed that the acoustic mode affected the piping system considerably. Finally the test device which can reduce the level of abnormal noise and vibration was built to verify validity applying for the piping system. Then we concluded that the noise and vibration generated from the piping system was attributed to the acoustic resonance in piping system, and so developed new device which can reduce the level of noise and vibration under 40%. Put Abstract here.

  • An underwater speaker was developed for use as an acoustic deterrent device that transmits acoustic energy through the water omnidirectionally over a broadband frequency range to eliminate marine mammal attacks and to prevent physical damage to the inshore and coastal fishing grounds of Korea. The underwater speaker was constructed of two vibration caps machined from 6061-T6 aluminum alloy and a stack of PZ 26 piezoelectric ceramic rings (Ferroperm Piezoceramics A/S) connected mechanically in series and electrically in parallel. The performance characteristics of the underwater speaker were measured and analyzed in an experimental water tank of $5\;m{\times}5\;m{\times}6\;m$. The peak transmitting voltage response (TVR) was measured at 11.16 kHz with 163.45 dB re $1\;{\mu}Pa$/V at 1m. The underwater speaker showed a near omnidirectional beam pattern at the peak TVR resonance frequency. The usable frequency range was 4-25 kHz with a lower TVR limit of approximately 140 dB. We conclude that this underwater speaker could be satisfactorily used as an acoustic deterrent device against marine mammals, particularly the bottlenose dolphin, to protect catches and fishing grounds as well as the mammals themselves, for example, by keeping them away from fishing gear and/or vessels.

  • The noise induced hearing loss, which is one type of the hearing losses, is well known occupational diseases. The prevention of the noise induced hearing loss is very important, because it is unrecoverable. There are some kinds of devices for hearing protection, and those are effective in preventing the noise induced hearing loss. However, people often resist the use of hearing protection devices because they have some difficulties during conversation in wearing the devices. To solve the problem, a small acoustic filter can be used for a hearing protection device. In this paper, we designed several kinds of small acoustic filters and analyzed the characteristics of designed small acoustic filters using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). From FEA results, we proved the characteristics of designed small acoustic filters which vary according to length and diameter. And we found out that the general tendencies of modeled filters using FEA are same as acoustic experiment results of designed filters.

  • The 2 GHz film bulk acoustic wave resonator(FBAR), one of the most necessary device of the next generation mobile communication system, consisted of solidly mounted resonator(SMR) structure using Brags reflector, was researched in this paper The FBAR applied SiO$_{2}$ and W had large difference of the acoustic impedance to reflector Al to electrode and ZnO to piezoelectric layer. Specially, the FBAR applied the two-step deposition method to improve the c-axis orientation and increase reproducibility of the fabrication device had good performance. The electrical properties of plasma such as impedance, resistance, reactance, $V_{pp},\;I{pp}$, VSWR and phase difference of voltage and current, was analyzed and measured by RF sensor with the variable experiment process factors such as gas ratio, RF power and base vacuum level about concerning the thickness, c-axis orientation, adhesion and roughness. The FBAR device about the optimum condition resulted reflection loss(S$_{11}$) of -17 dB, resonance frequency of 1.93 GHz, electric-mechanical coefficient(k$_{eff}$) of 2.38 $\%$ and Qualify factor of 580. It was seen better qualify than the common dielectric filter at present and expected on business to the filter device of 2 GHz bandwidth with the MMIC technology.

  • An acoustofluidic device using conductive liquid-based electrodes was developed for malaria parasite separation from white blood cells. In this device, the electrode channels filled with a conductive liquid were used to generate standing surface acoustic waves (SSAWs) in a fluidic channel, which can overcome the limitation of conventional patterned metal electrodes. Separation performance of the device was evaluated using fluorescent polystyrene particles with two different sizes (2 and $10{\mu}m$ diameters), which were successfully separated. In addition, a mixture of malaria parasites and white blood cells were also efficiently separated with high purity of ~98% in the CL-SSAW device at the flow rate of $12{\mu}l/min$.
