Various natural compounds act as antioxidants in protection against lipid peroxidation. Lipid peroxidation yields a variety of decomposition products which have been implicated in not only decreasing the nutritional value of food, but also in developing an off-flavor and toxic substances. As a source of safer and more effective natural antioxidants of natural origin have been widely investigated. Some Indonesian plants have evaluated for their antioxidative activity, and suggested the possible existence of various antioxygenic compounds in them. We attempted to study such antioxygenic compounds with simple method evaluation. As we are interested in the natural product compounds, we examined of several sample such as edible sea-weeds, and some edible fruits. Sea-weed, Eisenia bicyclis, one of the edible brown algae, exhibited the activity. As a traditional food additive consumed by Indonesian, Garcinia parvifolia is used as taste supplement in region West Sumatra, have been studied. Our current studies on the semi-polar fractions shows the activity by the thiocyanate method test. Another sample, Garcinia mangostana, a famous fruit with sweet taste, the part kernel have also evaluated. The acidic fraction of the extract showed antioxidative activity. Some other active components were found in the neutral and BuOH fractions.
Korean ginseng(Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) roots have long been known as the best medicinal plant and its pharmaceutical bio-activities have been proven by scientific analyses of their components - ginsenosides, acidic polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, fatty acids and organic acids etc. Ginseng hairy roots and callus have been cultured in vitro for stable supply of ginseng material. In this study, the amount of ginsenosides, fatty acids, acidic polysaccharides, phenolic compounds and organic acids in ginseng hairy roots and callus were compared. Higher amount of ginsenoside was found in ginseng hairy roots than ginseng callus. Higher amount of saturated fatty acid (palmitic acid) was found in callus and higher amount of unsaturated fatty acid (linoleic acid) was found in hairy roots. Acidic polysaccharide and phenolic compounds were contained by the same amount in both hairy roots and callus. Organic acids were found more in hairy roots.
Antibiotics which produced by mushrooms discovered for last 40 years were described. Any antibiotic has not been used as infectious disease remudy but will be used as physiological active substance in near future. The antibiotic of mushrooms have not been published much in papers and do not have various finds of structures, compared to those of Streptomyces. Triple bond having compounds, terpenoid compounds aromatic compounds and some other compound have been known. These compounds are not dissolved well in water and mainly fat-soluble, except for cordycepin. Also, they are generally neutral, and some of them are acidic and almost none of them are basic compounds. However, acetylene and terpenoid compounds are the characteristic compounds of mushroom, and are not found in other microorganisms and plants. Especially, there are various terpenoid compounds in mushrooms. These metabolites of mushrooms were not used as antibiotic, but are interested as physiological active substance, such as enzyme inhibitor and immunomodulator. To promote studying on the antibiotics of mushroom, new screening methods must be developed, because strain belonged to the different genus produces different antibiotics, even though mushrooms belonged to the same genus and species. It is also known that mushrooms collected in different areas produce different antibiotics. Now, it is difficult to separate each pure compound from mushroom. It is important to find mushrooms which is impossible to cultivate artificially, or grow in the back land where is difficult to collect. Thousands of mushrooms grow on earth now, so that which species will be screened if not known. The biochemical and mycological study for usability of the metabolites of mushrooms is thought, as one of the important research areas, must be performed.
The approximate rates and stoichiometries of the reaction of lithium borohydride, with fifty two selected organic compounds containing representative functional groups under the standard condition (tetrahydrofuran, $0^{\circ}$), were studied.Among the active hydrogen compounds, primary alcohols and compounds containing an acidic proton liberated hydrogen relatively fast, but secondary and tertiary alcohols very sluggishly. All the carbonyl compounds examined were reduced rapidly within one hour. Especially, among the ${\alpha}{\beta}$-unsaturated carbonyl compounds tested, the aldehydes consumed one hydride cleanly, however the cyclic ketones consumed more than one hydride even at $-20^{\circ}$. Carboxylic acids were reduced very slowly, showing about 60% reduction in 6 days at $25^{\circ}$, however acyl chlorides reduced immediately within 30 minutes. On the other hand, the reductions of cyclic anhydrides proceeded moderately to the hydroxy acid stage, however the further reductions were very slow. Aromatic and aliphatic esters, with exception of the relatively moderate reduction of acetate, were reduced very slowly, however lactones were reduced at a moderate rate. Epoxides reacted slowly, but amides and nitriles as well as the nitro compounds were all inert to this reagent. And cyclohexanone oxime and phenyl isocyanate were reduced very sluggishly. Last of all, all sulfur compounds studied were inert to this hydride.
Regardless of the test species, germination was adversely affected by the different concentrations of the acidic and neutral fractions of sunflower root exudates while the basic and aqueous fractions had no effect on germination. In both test species, root lengths were inhibited slightly more than shoot lengths. Significant reduction in fresh weights of the test species was observed when the test species were treated with the acidic and neutral fractions but not with the basic and aqueous fractions. Six compounds, hydroquinone, ${\beta}$-resorcyclic acid, vanillic acid, caffeic acid, salicylic acid, and quercetin, were characterized from the acidic fraction. Seven compounds, hydroquinone, gentisic acid, ${\beta}$-resorcyclic acid, vanillic acid, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, and quercetin, were elucidated from the neutral fraction.
Sonochemical Reformatsky reaction of aldehydes or ketones with ethyl bromoacetate in the presence of indium afforded $\beta-hydroxyesters$ in good to excellent yields under mild conditions. 2- or 3-Hydroxybenzaldehyde that contains an acidic hydrogen r eacted with ethyl bromoacetate to provide the desired compounds with the same efficiency. In the case of ethyl 2-bromopropanoate and ethyl 2-bromo-2-methylpropanoate, the desired products were obtained in good yields. Reaction of aldehyde with indium reagent in the presence of ketone group proceeded chemoselectively.
The base-catalyzed hydrolysis of indomethacin over a range of pH 8,2 to 10.0 was investigated, according to the first order kinetic equation. The energy of activation for the reaction was calculated 20, 18 kcal/mole from the Arrhenius plot. And the optimal pH of indomethacin in aqueous solution was estimated as pH 4.93 by the extrapolation of the log k-pH profiles in strong acidic and alkaline regions. And the influences of alkaline earth metals, heavy metals and some other compounds on the degradation of indomethacin were observed with no effect.
In order to obtain high dye uptake initially, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) filaments were dyed with C.I.Disperse Orange 3 and Red 1 in mixed solvents of tetrachloroethylene acidic solvent, ethyl alcohol and tetrachloroethylene basic solvent, DMF. The dyeing behavior in the mixed solvent of tetrachloroethylene and basic solvent, DMF, the initial uptake of disperse dyes increased rapidly. The shrinkage of PET increased when the solubility parameter values of PET fiber and mixed solvent approached graduately.
To collect the basic data for the use of major softwood and hardwood vinegar, the chemical compositions were analized. In softwood vinegar the phenolic compounds derieved from lignin and extractives are vanillin, guaiacol, 3-methylphenol, acetoguaiacone, 1,2-benzenediol, ethylguaiacol, pyrocatechol. The compound derived from carbohydrates is 2-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one. The isolated compounds are the most in the phenolic fraction, and in the vinegar of Pinus koraiensis. In hardwood vingar 2-methoxyphenol, 2,6-djmethoxyphenol, 1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl) -ethanone, 3-methoxy-4-hydroxybenzylalcohol, 1-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxy-phenyl)-ethanone are the compounds derived from lignin and extractives. 2-hydroxy-3-methyl-2,4-cyclopen-1-one, methyl-4-t-butyl-2-furoate are the major compounds derived from the decomposition of carbohydrates. Many different kinds of compounds are analized in the neutral, phenolic and acidic fraction of hardwood vinegar The amount and kinds of compounds in hardwood vinegar are more higher than those of softwood than in softwood.
