The extraction of precious metals from aqueous solutions is performed by using a photoredox reaction with a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. The metallic silver was efficiently precipitated and extracted from the silver nitrate solution by laser photolysis. An optimum reaction condition for silver extraction was determined by adjusting various experimental factors such as type of reducing agent, type of acids and reaction time. The composition of the reaction product was analyzed and it was identified as metallic silver, not other molecular types. The photoreaction of chromium(III) chloride in an acidic aqueous solution was also investigated. The 355 nm laser light was better suited for the reaction of silver nitrate as well as chromium(III) chloride in an acidic solution compared to the 532 nm light.
Natural and expandable graphites were chemically treated in acidic aqueous solutions such as acetic acid or mixtures of acetic acid and nitric acid. Structures and thermal conductivities of the as-treated graphites were characterized in detail. Both graphites were significantly oxidized in the mixed acidic solution of $H_2SO_4$ and $HNO_3$, which condition was generally used for the oxidation of carbon nanotubes. This considerable oxidation of graphites caused a depression of their thermal conductivity. The structural characteristics, obtained by XRD and XPS, show that the graphites treated in the relatively weak acidic conditions (acetic acid or mixture of acetic acid and nitric acid) were quite similar to the untreated graphites. However, the thermal conductivities of both acidic-treated graphites were remarkably increased.
The phase-shift method and correlation constants, which are unique electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques for studying the linear relationship between the phase shift ($90^{\circ}{\geq}-{\varphi}{\geq}0^{\circ}$) vs. potential (E) behavior for the optimum intermediate frequency ($f_o$) and the fractional surface coverage ($0{\leq}{\theta}{\leq}1$) vs. E behavior, are proposed and verified to determine the Frumkin, Langmuir, and Temkin adsorption isotherms and the related electrode kinetic and thermodynamic parameters. At Ni/0.5 M $H_2SO_4$ and 0.1M LiOH aqueous solution interfaces, the Frumkin and Temkin adsorption isotherms (${\theta}$ vs. E) of H for the cathodic hydrogen ($H_2$) evolution, interaction parameters (g), equilibrium constants (K), standard Gibbs energies (${\Delta}G^0_{\theta}$) of H adsorption, and rates of change (r) of ${\Delta}G^0_{\theta}$ with ${\theta}$ have been determined using the phase-shift method and correlation constants. A lateral repulsive interaction (g>0) between the adsorbed H species appears. The value of K in the alkaline aqueous solution is much greater than that in the acidic aqueous solution.
The influence of carbon surface area, carbon-oxygen groups associated with the carbon surface and the solution pH on the adsorption of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solutions has been studied using three activated carbons. The adsorption isotherms are Type I of BET classification and the data obeys Langmuir adsorption equation. The BET surface area has little effect on the adsorption while it is strongly influenced by the presence of acidic carbon oxygen surface groups. The amount of these surface groups was enhanced by oxidation of the carbons with different oxidizing agents and reduced by eliminating these groups on degassing at different temperatures. The adsorption of Pb(II) ions increases on each oxidation and decreases on degassing the oxidized carbons. The increase in adsorption on oxidation has been attributed to the formation of acidic carbon-oxygen surface groups and the decrease to the elimination of these acidic surface groups on degassing. The adsorption is also influenced by the pH of the aqueous solution. The adsorption is only small at pH values lower than 3 but is considerably larger at higher pH values. Suitable mechanisms consistent with the adsorption data have been suggested.
This study was carried out to separate and identify the acidic compounds in tobacco leaves. Izmir tobacco leaves was extracted with isopropyl ether and the extract was concentrated. The concentrate was extracted with 6% NaHCO3 aqueous solution. The aqueous extract was acidified with sulfuric acid, and extracted with diethyl ether. The acidic material was fractionated on silicic acid column using a benzene-methanol mixture with a stepwise increasing methanol concentration. The resulting fractions were esterified with diazomethane, and then identified by GC, GC/MS using SPB -5 fused silica capillary column. Most of acidic compounds in Izmir tobacco leaves were elected from fraction B which was benzene-methanol(98 : 2) mixture on silicic acid column chromatography. The identified acidic compounds of Izmir tobacco leaves were 18 saturated acids, 8 unsaturated acids, 5 dicarboxylic acids, 13 aromatic acids and 7 terpenoid acids. The major acidic compounds of lzmir tobacco leaves were 2- methylbutanoic, 3-methyl butanoic, 3- methylpentanoic, hexanoic, nonanedioic, phenylacetic, benzoic, 4- methoxybenzoic, 3, 5- dimethoxybenzoic, methoxycinnamic and 3, 4- dimethoxycinnamic acid. Key Words : Izmir tobacco, Acidic compounds, GC/MS.
IgY was separated from a hen's egg yolk that was immunized with Helicobacter pyroli. The anti-H. pyroli IgY activity at acidic pH and the suppressive effect of polyol on acid-induced inactivation of IgY were investigated. Sorbitol and xylitol were used as polyols. IgY was quite stable at pH 5~7. Irreversible inactivation of IgY was observed at pH below 4, and proceeded rapidly at pH below 3. The acid stability of IgY was enhanced in the presence of 30% sorbitol or above. In a 50% aqueous sorbitol solution, an acid-induced inactivation was almost completely suppressed at pH 3. However, the improvement of IgY activity was not observed in the aqueous xylitol solution. IgY showed almost the same activity as native IgY when sucrose was substituted for sorbitol. On the other hand, the xylitol replacement with sucrose did not enhance the acid stability of IgY. The acid-induced inactivation of IgY was related to tryptophyl fluorescence. Fluorescence emission spectra suggested that structural changes near the tryptophan residues may occur under acidic conditions. An increase in sorbitol concentration induced a blue shift. The fluorescence emission of IgY in a 50% sorbitol solution had a peak at 330 nm, which was the same emission peak that was exhibited by native IgY. Sorbitol could, therefore, be used as a good stabilizer of IgY under acidic conditions.
The base-catalyzed hydrolysis of indomethacin over a range of pH 8,2 to 10.0 was investigated, according to the first order kinetic equation. The energy of activation for the reaction was calculated 20, 18 kcal/mole from the Arrhenius plot. And the optimal pH of indomethacin in aqueous solution was estimated as pH 4.93 by the extrapolation of the log k-pH profiles in strong acidic and alkaline regions. And the influences of alkaline earth metals, heavy metals and some other compounds on the degradation of indomethacin were observed with no effect.
The metal indicator, acidic azo dyes NN, EBT and Calcon are utilized to analyse quantitatively chlorpheniramine, tripelenamine and diphenhydramine forming insoluble ion pair in aqueous solution at proper pH values between the acidic azo dyes and the sample molecules, these compexes are extracted by organic polar solvents, and organic layer is determined spectrophotometrically. Generally, the absorption maxima of the complexes are shifted to longer wavelengths compare to the absorption maxima of the dyes themselves. The binding ratio of the ion pair forming complex molecules in chloroform soln, are as follows ; NN-antihistamines (chlorpheniramine, tripelennamine, diphenhydramine) are NN-1 to antihisamine-1, EBT-antihistamines are EBT-2 to antithistamines a and Calcon-antihistamines are Calcon-3 to antithistamines-1. These coomplexes in chloroform soln. are very stable, and show higher absorbance than the other organic polar solvents. The binding state of complexes were presumed intermolecular hydrogen bond by their infrared spectra. In the mixture solution of three samples, the aqueous phase is buffered at pH 1.0, and benzene is used to extract ion pair of diphenhydramine EBT complex selectively. At pH 1.0 of aqueous layer, Calon-diphenhydramine complex is also extracted selectively by benzene. However, in this case very small amount of chlorpheniramine-calcon calcon simultaneously. The binding state of diphenhydramine-EBT and diphenhydramine-calcon in benzene are smae as the complexes in chloroform. But the absorption maxima of the complexes in benzene are shifted to shorter wavelenlgths than the complexes in chloroform.
The method for colorimetric determination of acidic polysaccharide from Panax ginseng was investigated. It is possible to apply the method of carbazole-sulfuric acid to determination of pectin, and also to measure the amount of pectin in the mixture of various high molemlu compounds such as starch. cellulose and gum, etc. When the method of carbazole-sulfuric acid was applied to determine the amount of acidic polysaccharide, optical density at 525 nm increased linearly with an increase in the concentration of pure acidic polysaccharide. Effective extraction temperature with water for the determination of the amount of ginseng acidic polysaccharide (GAP) was $80{\circ}C$. In order to separate or concentrate GAP it was appropriate to precipitate the extract only once with 80% ethyl alcohol. GAP was very stable at $100{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs in aqueous solution and between pH values of 5.0~ 12.0.
The binding of heavy metal ions onto cross-linked chitosan in dilute aqueous solution has been investigated as a function of pH (4.0 and 7.0), agitation period (10-180min) and concentration of various metal cations (5, 10, 50 and 100ppm). In order to obtain adsorbents that are insoluble and stable, and prevent the dissolution loss of chitosan into an acidic aqueous solution, chitosan flakes were cross-linked with epichlorohydrine (ECH) and its adsorption behavior was compared with that of the non cross-linked chitosan. An advantage of ECH is that it does not eliminate the cationic amine functional group of chitosan. In terms of adsorption ratio, the chitosan cross-linked at an ECH was inferior to original chitosan and was found that chitosan has a selectivity much remarkable than the cross-linked chitosan in low concentrated metal solutions. However, no significant decreases in the adsorption ratios were observed between the cross-linked ECH-chitosan and the non cross-linked chitosan concerning the adsorption of $Ni^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, $Pb^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ acidic solution.
