  • This study investigates the influence of varying concentrations of boric acid (BA) preservative on the physical and mechanical properties of light red meranti (LRM) found in Sarawak. LRM or Shorea leprosula samples were treated with various concentrations of BA via the dip diffusion method using American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. The physical property, particularly the retention rate and mechanical properties, bending strength, modulus of elasticity (MOE), tensile and compression strength parallel to grain of impregnated and control samples were tested to determine the effects of BA preservative. The retention rate was found to increase with increasing BA concentration and higher surface area to volume ratio. The mechanical properties in terms of the MOE and tensile strength parallel to grain were found to be greater than those of the control samples, whereas the bending strength and tensile strength parallel to grain were lower. Amongst the results, only the retention rate and MOE showed significant interaction effects at 5% level of significance between all factors tested (samples size and BA concentration for retention rate and BA concentration for MOE).

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of salivary contamination of etched enamel on shear bond strength of a bracket adhered to etched enamel. Eighty extracted human permanent premolars were used in this study. These samples were divided into two groups. Buccal surface of samples were etched in vitro with 38% phosphoric acid for 15 seconds and 60 seconds. Each group was divided into four subgroups. Etched enamel surfaces were contaminated with saliva for 0, 1, 20, 60 seconds, washed and dried. Test surfaces were examined using scanning electron microscope(SEM). The shear bond strength of each sample was determined with a universal testing instrument(Instron Co. Model 4201). Results were as follows; 1. Salivary contamination for 1, 20, 60 seconds did not affect shear bond strength when compared with the uncontaminated enamel group. 2 There was no significant difference(P>.05) in shear bond strength between 15 sec. and 60 sec. etching in uncontaminated enamel groups. 3. When samples were examined using SEM, organic materials coated enamel surface masked the etched pattern partially.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the shear bond strength of resin cement for orthodontic brackets without applying an adhesive primer, to the case of applying an adhesive primer. Materials and Methods: The specimens were divided into three experimental groups, Transbond XT, GC Ortho Connect and Orthomite LC, and the enamel surface was divided into two sections, one with 37% phosphoric acid and the other with 37% phosphoric acid and an adhesive primer or universal adhesive. Each of three types of cement was applied to orthodontic bracket, and after bonding, the shear bond strength was measured. Results: Transbond XT and Orthomite LC significantly increased shear bond strength when orthodontic brackets were bonded after applying an adhesive primer and universal adhesive, respectively. Conclusion: It is expected that application of an adhesive primer or universal adhesive after acid etching will improve shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets in Transbond XT and Orthomite LC.

  • Various metal chlorides and acid catalysts in ionic liquid solvent were investigated to directly convert cellulose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF). Metal chlorides containing Sn(II), Zn(II), Al(III), Fe(III), Cu(II), and Cr(III) were used and acidic ionic liquid immobilized on silica gel as an acid catalyst and commercial acid catalysts (sulfuric acid, chloric acid, Amberlyst-15,DOWEX50x8) were used for comparison studies. The acid strength and amount of acid catalysts were probed with Hammett indicator. The selectivity and yield of 5-HMF were determined with reaction temperature, reaction time and catalyst ratio. A catalyst containing $CrCl_3-6H_2O$ and $SiO_2-[ASBI]HSO_4$ showed the highest selectivity and it was found that this catalyst had higher activity than commercial solid acid catalysts such as Amberlyst-15 and DOWEX50x8. The selectivity of 5-HMF appeared to be mainly dependent on the acid strength and catalyst ratio, it was found that levulinic acid was produced from 5-HMF by rehydration.

  • In the skeletal isomerization of 1-pentene over various solid acid catalysts, we have studied catalytic reactivity, selectivity, reaction mechanism and the relation between acid strength of catalysts and catalytic activity. Natural zeolite shows highest activity among the all catalysts and the modified ${\eta}$-alumina with fluorine and sulfuric acid shows higher activity than unmodified ${\eta}$-alumina. The yield of isopentene increases with increasing temperature and increasing contact time. However the cracking products increase at the high temperature and very high contact time. In addition, the activity of natural zeolite exchanged with metal cation decreases and shows good relation with the polarizing power of metal cation. According to the result of ammonia TPD, the acid strength of catalysts has an effect on catalytic activity.

  • To develop natural-tasting fish paste from the pufferfish Lagocephalus wheeleri, steamed pufferfish paste (SPP) was prepared and its optimal processing conditions, quality metrics, and shelf-life characteristics were examined. SPP was produced by thawing golden threadfin Nemipterus virgatus surimi (FA grade), then adding 10% unwashed pufferfish surimi (PS), 1.5% salt, 8.0% wheat starch, 0.25% calcium carbonate, 0.25% sugar, 0.75% sorbitol, 0.25% polyphosphate, and 12.0% pufferfish hot-water extract (Brix 10°). The meat was ground with a Stephan mixer, molded at low temperature (18℃, 10 h), vacuum packed in a laminated plastic film bag, heat treated with hot water (95℃, 50 min), and cooled. As the amount of PS added increased, the whiteness, gel strength, and shear strength of the SPP decreased slightly. However, the SPP folding test showed no deterioration in the texture. In the sensory evaluation, the SPP received a higher rating for taste, smell, and overall taste than commercial Japanese pufferfish Kamaboko. The total amino acid content of the SPP was 10,262.6 mg/100 g; the major amino acids were aspartic acid, glutamic acid, alanine, valine, leucine, lysine, and arginine. The free amino acid content was 133.0 mg/100 g; the major amino acids were taurine, glutamic acid, glycine, alanine, cystine, and lysine.

  • The thermal properties, morphology, mechanical properties and gas permeability of the blends of poly (amic acid) (PAA) and poly (o-hydroxyamides) (PHAs) having pendant group was investigated. The 5% weight loss and major weight loss of the b)ends occurred in the ranges of $348{\sim}407^{\circ}C$ and $589{\sim}615^{\circ}C$ upon a heating process. After a thermical annealing, the tensile strength and initial modulus of blends increased $3.7{\sim}52.9%$ and $34.4{\sim}70%$ from the value of pure PAA, respectively. Especially the tensile strength and modulus of the PAA/MP-PHA=9/1 showed the highest values (97.5 MPa and 2.67 GPa, respectively), which were 53 and 70% higher than those of pure PAA. The fine PHA domains were found to be uniformly dispersed. The interfacial adhesion between PAA and PHA was identified to be good. The gas permeabilities of PAA/M-PHA blend increased with M-PHA contents.

  • Polyamide (PA) oligomers, which are the hard segment of poly(ether-block-amide) (PEBA), presenting thermoplastic and high performance elastomeric properties were prepared by polycondensation between 4-aminobenzoic acid and 12-aminododecanoic acid. Subsequently PEBAs were obtained by addition polymerization of the PA oligomers and various molecular weights of poly(tetramethylene glycol) (PTMG). The structure of the final PEBA was identified by using FTIR and $^1H$ NMR and the thermal properties depending on changes in the structure of hard segment were collected by using DSC and UTM analysis. As the results, the melt temperature ($T_m$), the initial modulus, and the maximum strength of PEBAs increased with an increase in aromatic moiety up to 30% without reducing crystallinity.
