  • This study was carried out to evaluate the acid producing potential of geological materials such as pit wall, waste rock and stream sediments near the abandoned Imgi mine. The 17 samples used in this study were collected and then treated by static test such as Acid Base Accounting and etc. Samples of pit wall and waste rocks with high S content display a NAGpH values below 4.5 and net acid potential. Therefore some cost effective measures such as capping and groudwater flow barriers, will be required to reduce the impacts of ARD from the waste rock impoundment and the pit wall on near the stream.

  • Soil contains the several kinds of metal oxides. Magnetite in soil may contribute the generation of secondary waste during the decontamination of soil by citric acid. Dissolution of magnetite powders by citric acid was investigated in the pH range between 2.0 and 5.0. The dissolution behaviour of magnetite was well described by the equation, A[1 - $e^{-B(x-c)}$]. The parameters of the equation were optimized by the iteration method, and the physical meaning of each parameter was explained. Concentration of each of the dissociated chemical species of citric acid was calculated using the ionization constants. The dissolution reaction was explained by the concentration of the dissociated chemical species of citric acid.d.

  • In this study, the effects of sulphuric acid on the mechanical performance and the durability of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) specimens were investigated. The carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) fabrics were used to evaluate the performances of the confined and unconfined ECC specimens under static and cyclic loading in the acidic environment. In addition, the use of CFRP and BFRP fabrics as a rehabilitation technique was also studied for the specimens exposed to the sulphuric acid environment. The polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber with a fraction of 2% was used in the research. Two different PVA-ECC concretes were produced using low lime fly ash (LCFA) and high lime fly ash (HCFA) with the fly ash-to-OPC ratio of 1.2. Unwrapped PVA-ECC specimens were also produced as a reference concrete and all concrete specimens were continuously immersed in 5% sulphuric acid solution ($H_2SO_4$). The mechanical performance and the durability of specimens were evaluated by means of the visual inspection, weight change, static and cyclic loading, and failure mode. In addition, microscopic changes of the PVA-ECC specimens due to sulphuric acid attack were also assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to understand the macroscale behavior of the specimens. Results indicated that PVA-ECC specimens produced with low lime fly ash (LCFA) showed superior performance than the specimens produced with high lime fly ash (HCFA) in the acidic environment. In addition, confinement of ECC specimens with BFRP and CFRP fabrics significantly improved compressive strength, ductility, and durability of the specimens. PVA-ECC specimens wrapped with carbon FRP fabric showed better mechanical performance and durability properties than the specimens wrapped with basalt FRP fabric. Both FRP materials can be used as a rehabilitation material in the acidic environment.

  • The steel pipe manufacturing industry deals with facilities and materials. Especially thermal facilities are close to vapor cloud explosion (VCE) and may cause secondary damage to facilities because they deal with corrosive substances such as hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid and acid, fire, explosion, leakage etc. It is in danger. In this study, hazard identification method was conducted using HAZOP techniques and quantitative risk analysis was conducted using e-CA, a program that supports accident impact analysis. Equipment in the influence range of ERPG - 3 was determined to be a facility requiring replacement. It was decided that neutralization is necessary using slaked lime. Based on the cost of loss, We presented the proper replacement which is the timing of the dangerous facility. As a result, It was ideal to replace the facilities with 20 years of heat treatment facilities, one year of hydrofluoric acid storage tank, 20 years of sulfuric acid storage tank, and 5 years of hydrochloric acid storage tank.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze proximate composition, dietary fiber, mineral content, fatty acid composition in Cheonggak (Codium fragile) in order to encourage the consumption of Cheonggak. The proximate composition of Cheonggak was found to be 5.51% moisture, 24.09% crude ash, 15.79% crude protein, 2.47% crude lipid and 45.31% dietary fiber. The major mineral content of Cheonggak was Na 8,950 mg/100 g, Mg 1,252 mg/100 g, Ca 807 mg/100 g, K 457 mg/100 g, and trace mineral content was Fe 26 mg/100 g, Mn 8 mg/100 g, Zn 0.4 mg/100 g. Palmitic acid 36.86% and ${\alpha}$-linolenic acid 20.14% were the most contained fatty acids in Cheonggak. The ratio of saturated fatty acids to unsaturated fatty acids was 85.49% while ${\omega}-6$ fatty acids to ${\omega}-3$ fatty acids were 59.10%. Based on the proximate composition, dietary fiber, mineral content, and fatty acid composition, Cheonggak was judged to be a major source of dietary fiber and Mg and Ca, and it was deemed to be helpful in promoting health, including the prevention of hyperlipidemia. Cheonggak contained valuable nutrients similar to seaweed, which is produced and consumed the most in Korea. Thus, it is necessary to include Cheonggak in the food items.

  • When 7 kg·10a-1, which is less than the nitrogen standard application amount of 9 kg·10a-1, is applied, the protein content is lowered and the palatibility is improved. In order to examine the applicability of nitrogen fertilization of 7 kg·10a-1 nationwide, soil samples were collected from 240 paddy fields in 8 provinces in 2021, and the organic matter content, effective phosphoric acid, and effective silicic acid were analyzed for each sample. As a result of one-way ANOVA analysis between samples collected for each province, there was no significant difference in the content of organic matter, effective phosphoric acid, and effective silicic acid except for some provinces. The contents of organic matter was higher than the appropriate level(25 ~ 30 g·kg-1) except for Gyeongsangbuk-do, the effective phosphoric acid was higher than the appropriate level(80~120 mg·kg-1) in all provinces, and the effective silicic acid was lower than the appropriate level(157 ~ 180 mg·kg-1) except for Gyeonggi-do, Jeollanam-do and Gyeongsangnam-do. As a result of analyzing the recommended fertilization amount based on the nitrogen application amount of 7 kg·10a-1, 68.3% ofthe 240 samples were able to give nitrogen fertilizer less than 7.5 kg·10a-1, and the rest had to be given more than that to satisfy the standard fertilization amount. As a result of this study, 68.3% of rice paddies nationwide can be cultivated with a standard fertilization amount of 7 kg·10a-1, however it was thought that continuous nutrient management would be required for other paddies.

  • The sensitivity of aerosol light extinction coefficient to the aerosol chemical composition change is estimated by (1) calculating the aerosol water content and chemical concentrations by a gas/particle equilibrium model and (2) calculating the aerosol light extinction coefficient by a Mie theory based optical model. The major chemical species are total (gas and particle phase) sulfuric acid, total nitric acid, and total ammonia which are based on the measurement data at Seoul and Gosan. At Seoul, since there were enough ammonia to neutralize both total sulfuric acid and total nitric acid, the dry ionic concentration is most sensitive to the variation of the total nitric acid level, while the total mass concentration (ionic concentration plus water content) and thus, the aerosol light extinction coefficient are primarily determined by the total sulfuric acid. At Gosan, since the concentration of ambient sulfuric acid was the highest among the inorganic species, sulfate salts determined aerosol hygroscopicity. Thus, both ionic and total mass concentration, and resultant aerosol light extinction coefficient are primarily determined by the sulfuric acid level.

  • In this study, it was investigated the resistance of OPC, 60% GGBS, 20% PFA and 10% SF mortar specimens against sulfuric acid corrosion. As an index for degree of acid corrosion, the corrosion depth was evaluated. Then, it was found that an increase in the duration of immersion and a decrease in the pH, as expected, resulted in a more severe corrosion irrespective of binders; 60% GGBS mortar specimen was the most resistant to sulfuric acid corrosion. From the laboratory testing of sulfuric acid corrosion, an empirical prediction model was suggested as a power function of time and the pH of sulfuric acid, and was applied to an assessment of concrete structures exposed to an acidic environment. It was found that the empirical model gave a more precise prediction of sulfuric acid deterioration of concrete rather than a conventional model, mostly used for predicting carbonation of concrete.

  • To examine the effect of acid fog on the corrosion fatigue behavior in structural steel, fatigue tests under acid fog atmosphere were carried out in comparison with distilled water. The corrosive c omponents contained in acid fog pile up the corrosion products on crack face and show a crack branching and crack tip blunting. Therefore, due to these workings crack growth rate was reduced by decreasing the effective stress range in crack tip rather than under distilled water. Also the effect of sulfuric acid, which is the main component of acid fog, and testing speed on fatigue crack growth were examined. It was found that corrosion behavior was remarkably dependent upon pH and Hz rather than components of acid fog. According as pH and testing speed decrease below a specific value, crack growth was accelerated in comparison with distilled water. This reveals that due to liquid having strong acidity and slow speed of test the crack face dissolution was promoted, so crack closure was disturbed in the process of stress descent.

  • Extreme recovery of the thermal energy from the combustion of flue gas may bring about early gas condensation resulting in the increased formation of nitric acid vapor. The behavior of the nitric acid formed inside the stack and in the atmosphere was investigated through a computer-aided simulation in this study. Low temperatures led to high conversion rates of the nitrogen oxide to nitric acid, according to the Arrhenius relationship. Larger acid plumes could be formed with the cooled flue gas at $40^{\circ}C$ than the present exiting gas at $115^{\circ}C$. The acid vapor plume of 0.1 ppm extended to 25 m wide and 200 m high. The wind, which had a seasonal local average of 3 m/s, expanded the influencing area to 170 m along the ground level. Its tail stretched 50 m longer at $40^{\circ}C$ than at $115^{\circ}C$. The emission concentration of the acid vapor in the summer season was a little lower than in the winter. However, a warm atmosphere facilitated the Brownian motion of the discharged flue gas, finally leading to more vigorous dispersion.
