Brown oxide and/or black oxide layers were formed on the surface of Cu-based leadframe by chemical oxidation of leadframe in hot alkaline solutions, and their growth characteristics were studied. Then, to measure the adhesion strength between leadframe and epoxy molding compound (EMC), oxidized leadframe samples were molded with EMC and machined to form sandwiched double-cantilever beam (SDCB) specimens and pull-out specimens, respectively. Results showed that the adhesion strength of un-oxidized leadframe/EMC interface was inherently very poor but could be increased drastically with the nucleation of acicular CuO precipitates on the surface of leadframe. The presence of smooth faceted $Cu_2O $ on the surfaces of leadframe gave close to zero interfacial fracture toughness (Gc) and reasonable pull strength (PS). A direct correlation between Gc and PS showed that PS can be a measure of Gc only in a limited range.
The effects of Mn and Cr on the crystallization behaviors of Fe-bearing intennetallics in A356 alloy were studied. Coarse and acicular ${\beta}-Al_{5}$FeSi phase in A356-0.20wt.%Fe alloy was modified into small ${\alpha}$-Al(Fe,Mn)Si and ${\alpha}$-Al(Fe,Cr)Si phases in response to Mn and Cr addition, respectively. Increasing of Mn addition amount elevates the crystallizing temperature of ${\alpha}$-Al(Fe,Mn)Si and the Mn/Fe ratio in the ${\alpha}$-Al(Fe,Mn)Si. Cr is more effective to modify ${\beta}-Al_{5}$FeSi in comparison with Mn. ${\alpha}$-Al(Fe,Mn)Si phase had BCC/SC dual structure.
The mechanisms of fatigue crack growth (FCG) in a Ti$_3$Al-based (${\alpha}_2$) alloy, Ti-24Al-11Nb (a/o) with acicular microstructure were studied with particular attention focused on the fatigue crack path through the microstructure and on the effects of specimen orientation and crack closure. The results showed that the fatigue cracks of Ti-24Al-11Nb alloy grew much faster than conventional titanium alloys, with little difference in FCG rates for TL and TS orientations. The fatigue crack paths revealed crystallographic transgranular fracture with frequent serrations and branching. This is in agreement with the known effects of slip planarity and microstructure on the FCG behavior. The load-displacement hysteresis loops showed that the crack closure influenced the FCG behavior.

We prepared γ-alumina beads using the amorphous alumina, obtained by fast calcination of gibbsite, and its were immersed in aqueous solution of the mixture of 21.87% nitric acid and 28.57% acetic acid. The beads thus were hydrothermaly treated at 200$^{\circ}$C for 3h, and were investigated changes of crystal, pore characteristics, $N_2$ adsorption and desorption isotherms, mechanical strengths and thermal resistance. Acicular platelet crystals of 0.1∼0.3${\mu}$m were transformed into acicular boehmite crystals of 1∼2${\mu}$m having the same crystal structure. Through this changes, we found that reversible phase transformation due to hydrothermal reaction took placed between boehmite and ${\gamma}$-alumina. In comparison to the ${\gamma}$-alumina bead before hydrothermal treatment, $N_2$ adsorption capacity was increased from 450㎖/g to 670㎖/g, and pore volume between 100${\AA}$ and 1000${\AA}$ was increased form 0.15㎖/g to 0.77㎖g, and mechanical strength was increased form 1.4MPa to 2.2MPa. Also, it showed the remarkable thermal resistance which sustained ${\theta}$-alumina crystal structure and pores between 100${\AA}$ and 1000${\AA}$ at 1000$^{\circ}$C in 40vol% steam.
Salvinia natans, an unique water fern having a small rootless body, developed three different types of trichomes throughout the plant. The most peculiar type exhibiting rows of obvious, whitish, multicellular trichome clusters was noticed in the upper surface of the floating leaves. Eight to ten branches within a cluster extended ca. $370{\sim}420{\mu}m$ from the leaf surface. No stalk cell was found, however, four large epidermal cells were discernable at the base of four central branches in the cluster. Each branch consisted of $8{\sim}10$ obliquely-oriented small cells that gradually decreased in size toward the branch tip. The second type was found in the lower surface of the floating leaves, stems, and sporocarps. Multicellular uniseriate trichomes, ca. $430{\sim}980{\mu}m$ long, were distributed all over these structures. The tip of trichome was acicular, but a semi-spheric protuberance of approximately $24{\sim}32{\mu}m$ in diameter occurred at the base of each trichome. The protuberance appeared to be firmly attached to the side of the basal cell, however, internal connection to the trichome cell itself was uncertain. The third type was similar to the second in that multicellur uniseriate trichomes with acicular tip and a protuberance at the base were present. However, the trichomes were considerably long relative to the second type, and only occurred along the surface of highly dissected, submerged leaves. A majority of the trichomes exceeded more than 2 mm in length that hung downward in the water. Regardless of trichome type, all trichomes contained a huge central vacuole with very thin cytoplasm, resulting from the fusion of several vacuoles during early trichome development. The various densely-distributed trichomes formed in Salvinia natans probably play an important role in plant buoyancy.

We conducted investigations into the morphological characterstics and chemical compositions of the microlites included in the obsidians from the North Korean side Baekdusan (NK) and in the obsidian artefacts from the Busan Gadeokdo prehistoric site (BG). The morphology of the microlites from the NK can be divided into three groups, and trichite-acicular and trichite-asteroidal types are predominant. On the other hand the microlites from the BG show various morphological features such as acicular, margarite, lath, and asteroidal types. Silicate microlites from the NK are mostly of Ca-pyroxene compositions (hedenbergite to augite), whereas those from the BG are mostly of biotite (annite) with small amount of clinopyroxene (ferrosilite). It is well understood that the microlites from the NK are different from those from the BG in terms of the morphology, mineral content and mineral composition. Thus the obsidian aretefacts from the Busan Gadeokdo prehistoric site seem to have no genetical relationship to the obsidians from the Baekdusan.
Cp-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloys commonly used dental implant materials, particularly for orthopaedic and osteosynthesis because of its suitable mechanical properties and excellent biocompatibility. This alloys have excellent corrosion behavior in the clinical environment. The first factor to decide the success of dental implantation is sufficient osseointegration and high corrosion resistance between on implant fixture and its surrounding bone tissue. In this study, in order to increase corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of Cp-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy that surface of manufactured alloy was coated with TiN by RF-magnetron sputtering method. The electrochemical behavior of TiN coated Cp-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy were investigated using potentiodynamic (EG&G Co, PARSTAT 2273. USA) and potentiostatic test (250mV) in 0.9% NaCl solution at 36.5 $\pm$ 1$^{\circ}C$. These results are as follows : 1. From the microstructure analysis, Cp-Ti showed the acicular structure of $\alpha$-phase and Ti-6Al-4V showed the micro-acicular structure of ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ phase. 2. From the potentiodynamic test, Ecorr value of Cp-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloys showed -702.48mV and -319.87mV, respectively. Ti-6Al-4V alloy value was higher than Cp-Ti alloy. 3. From the analysis of TiN and coated layer, TIN coated surface showed columnar structure with 800 nm thickness. 4. The corrosion resistance of TiN coated Cp-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloys were higher than those of the non-coated Ti alloys in 0.9% NaCl solution from potentiodynamic test, indicating better protective effect. 5. The passivation current density of TiN coated Cp-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloys were smaller than that of the noncoated implant fixture in 0.9% NaCl solution, indicating the good protective effect resulting from more compact and homogeneous layer formation.
The cylindrical ${\gamma}$-alumina pellets were prepared using amorphous alumina and pore generating agent. Its were immersed in aqueous solution of the mixture of Fe(NO$_3$)$_3$.9$H_2O$ and $CH_3$COOH, Fe(NO$_3$)$_3$.9$H_2O$ and $CH_3$COOH and HNO$_3$, and Fe(NO$_3$)$_3$.9$H_2O$ and HNO$_3$. The pellets thus were hydrothermally treated at 20$0^{\circ}C$ for 3 h in autoclave, and were investigated morphologies and changes of crystal pore characteristics, $N_2$ adsorption and desorption isotherms, active sites and mechanical strength etc. According to the preparation method, acicular platelet pseudo-boehmite crystals of 0.1~0.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ size were transformed into acicular pseudo-boehmite cristals of 0.5~2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ size having the same crystal structure. When ${\gamma}$-alumina pellets were immersed in aqueous solution of the mixture of Fe(NO$_3$)$_3$.9$H_2O$ and $CH_3$COOH and then were hydrothermally treated, pore volume between 100 $\AA$ and 1000 $\AA$ was increased from 0.34 ㏄/g to 0.86 ㏄/g, and the gap of $N_2$ adsorption and desorption hysteresis loop was decreased due to increasement of pore size. New active site that could adsorb the C-H functional group was created on the catalist. Also, mechanical strength of catalyst was increased from 1.06 ㎫ to 1.36 ㎫.
The TiO2 powder with the values of the large specific surface area more than 150$m^2$/g has been prepared with the homogeneous precipitation process below 5$0^{\circ}C$ and its formation mechanism was investigated using the SEM, TEM and Raman Spectroscopy. With the spontaneous hydrolysis of aqueous TiOCl2 solutions, all the precipitates were fully and homogeneously crystallized with the rutile TiO2 phase simply by heating, which as transformed to the anatase TiO2 phase as increasing the addition of SO42- ions to the aqueous TiOCl2 solution. The precipitates were formed with spherical secondary particles which consisted of acicular, spherical and mixed primary particles corresponding to the rutile, anatase and mixed phases, respectively. It can be thought that the formation and phase determination of crystalline TiO2 powders even at ambient temperature would be related with the existence of the capillary force. This force might be varied depending on the shape change of the primary particles.

Hydrogen permeation measurements have been carried out on API X65 grade linepipe steel. In order to study the effect of steel microstructure on hydrogen diffusion behavior in linepipe steel, the accelerated cooling condition was applied and then three different kinds of microstructures were obtained. Hydrogen permeation measurement has been performed in reference to modified ISO17081 (2004) and ZIS Z3113 method. Hydrogen trapping parameters in these steels were evaluated in terms of the effective diffusivity ($D_{eff}$), permeability ($J_{ss}L$) and the amount of diffusible hydrogen. In this study, microstructures which affect both hydrogen trapping and diffusion were degenerated pearlite (DP), acicular ferrite (AF), bainite and martensite/austenite constituents (MA). The low $D_{eff}$ and $J_{ss}L$ mean that more hydrogen can be trapped reversibly or irreversibly and the corresponding steel microstructure is dominant hydrogen trapping site. The large amount of diffusible hydrogen means that corresponding steel microstructure is predominantly reversible. The results of this study suggest that the hydrogen trapping efficiency increases in the order of DP, bainite and AF, while AF is the most efficient reversible trap.
