Influence of Acetic Acid Solution on Heat Stability of L-Ascorbic Acid

  • This study investigated the heat stability of L-ascorbic acid (AA) in acetic acid solution. To analyze the degradation of AA using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), AA was measured at a wavelength of 244 nm in acetic acid and 265 nm in distilled water. During the storage of AA in acetic acid or distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$, degradation of AA was slower in acetic acid than in distilled water. On examining various ratios of AA to acetic acid, the stability of AA at $100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min was the highest when the concentration of acetic acid was 10 times higher than the concentration of AA. After acetic acid was added into AA degraded by heating, the AA is stabilized by reheating. Ultimately, these results indicate that degraded AA is reduced by hydrogen ions dissociated from acetic acid, and the rate of reduction of degraded AA in acetic acid solution is improved with heat processing.

Dyeing Characteristics of Fermented Caesalpinia Sappan L. Wood Extract with Chitosan-Acetic Acid Solution and Illite Powder (발효 소목 추출물의 키토산초산 용액과 일라이트 분말에 의한 염색 특성)

  • In this study, silk fabrics was dyed with sappan wood extracts fermented for 5 and 15 days, respectively, and then the dyeability, durability and the functionality of the dyed silk were investigated. Before dyeing, the silk was pretreated with chitosan-acetic acid solution or chitosan acetic acid and illite blend solution. Thereafter, UV-Visible transmittance, color, fastness, antimicrobial activity, and the FIR emissivity were analyzed. As a result, the K/S value was higher in the samples that were not pre-treated or fermented. Regardless of fermentation, the lightfastness was not significantly different. The color fastness to washing was slightly better when the samples were pretreated with chitosan-acetic acid and illite, and then dyed with extracts fermented 5 days. In addition, all samples showed high antimicrobial activity of 99.9%, regardless of the fermentation. Far-infrared emissivity was confirmed to be slightly increased by the illite and chitosan-acetic acid solution treatment compared to the untreated sample.

  • It has been reported that aqueous indirect carbonation process of calcium silicate mineral could be one of the most promising methods for $CO_2$ sequestration. The process consists of two main steps, extraction of Ca from calcium silicate and carbonation of the extracted solution by $CO_2$. Many types of acids such as HCl and $HNO_3$ can be used in the extraction step of the process. In the case of using aqueous acetic acid solution as the extraction solvent, acetic acid can be reproduced at the carbonation step of the extracted solution by $CO_2$ and recycled to extraction step for reuse it. Industrial by-products such as iron and steel slags are potential raw materials of the indirect carbonation process due to their high contents of calcium silicate. In this study, in order to examine the extraction efficiency of domestic electric arc furnace steel slag by aqueous acetic acid solution, extraction experiments of the slag were performed by using the aqueous acetic acid solutions of varying extraction conditions ; acetic acid concentrations, extraction temperatures and times.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate optical behaviour of coloring matter of gromwell -extracted by water, acetic acid/methanol, and the other solvents. The results were as following: UV, VIS spectra of the solution of coloring matter of gromwell extracted by water at below $80^{\circ}C$ did not reveal in the range of the visible light wavelength and coloring matter of gromwell decomposed to blue particle at $95^{\circ}C$. The solution extracted by acetic acid/methanol was tinged with reddish purple and its spectra shifted to the longer wavelength according to increase of the solvent temperature. The color of the solution extracted by water became extinct as time went by, but that extracted by acetic acid/methanol kept up original color. In case of dried gromwell, extraction by acetic acid/methanol was easier than by water, and variation of spectra did not appear but showed hypochromic shift.

  • The tensile properties, acetic acid solubility and degree of swelling in distilled water of cellulose/chitosan and sericin/chitosan film blended by mixing chitosan acetic acid solution with cellulose solution or sericin solution were investigated and the effect of crosslinking agent on solubility and degree of swelling were also considered. From the experimental results, the model of intermolecular bond is proposed. Tensile modulus of 100% cellulose film is high but the tensile strength and elongation are low. The elongation of 100% chitosan film is high but tensile modulus and strength is low. But it is possible to make film having same or higher tensile strength and modulus compared to that of 100% cellulose film by mixing cellulose and chitosan or by mixing sericin and chitosan. Chitosan is solved in 5vol % acetic acid solution but cellulose and sericin are not solved. Degree of swelling of chitosan in distilled water is higher than that of cellulose and sericin. Lower than 40wt% chitosan content, the solubility of cellulose/chitosan film in 5vol % acetic acid solution shows lower expected value but higher in case of sericin/chitosan film.

Acid Pickling/polishing of AZ31 Magnesium Alloy

  • This article reports a new chemical bath for preparing a mirror-like surface of AZ31 Mg alloy. In order to find an appropriate chemical polishing solution, four different acidic solutions of sulphuric acid, nitric acid, acetic acid and a specially designed mixture of nitric acid and acetic acid were investigated in view of the changes in surface appearance, roughness and dissolution rate of AZ31 Mg alloy. The surface scales on AZ31 Mg alloy were readily removed by all the acidic solutions, but a reflective surface was produced only by etching in the specially designed solution, and only after a specific etching time. The surface roughness increased with etching time in sulphuric acid, nitric acid, and acetic acid, but it lowered after a specific etching time in the specially designed mixture of nitric acid and acetic acid. Dissolution rate of the alloy in the specially designed mixture of nitric acid and acetic acid appeared to be more than twice than that in separate nitric acid or acetic acid. In this work, we recommend the mirror-like surface of AZ31 Mg alloy obtained by polishing for an optimum time in a mixture of nitric acid and acetic acid for following surface finishings, chemical conversion coating, electroplating, electrophoretic painting and anodizing treatment.

A Study on the Antibacterial Activity of Chitosan on the MRSA by the AATCC Test Method 100 and Modified AATCC Test Method 100

  • Water-soluble chitosan and water-insoluble chitosan with molecular weight of 2,000,000, 500,000, 80,000, and 40,000 with more than 90%of degree of deacetylation were produced to test antibacterial activity of chitosan against a pathogenic bacteria, Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA). the AATCC Test Method 100and Modified AATCC Test Method 100 were used to evaluate the antibacterial activity of chitosan. Antibacterial activity of chitosan/acetic acid solution was the same when they were tested by two different methods, but those of polyester fabrics treated with chitosan/acetic acid solution were different in different antibacterial test. So several problems were found in the experimental methods. The AATCC Test Method 100 seems that excessive nutrition exists in inoculum solution by quantitative analysis on the basis the result of antibacterial activity on chitosan/acetic acid solution and amount of chitosan attached to the surface of treated fabrics.

In vivo Methane Production from Formic and Acetic Acids in the Gastrointestinal Tract of White Roman Geese

  • Three experiments were conducted to determine the conversion rate of formic and acetic acids into methane in the gastrointestinal tracts of geese. In experiment I, two sets of two 4-month-old male White Roman geese were allocated to one of two treatment groups. Each set of geese was inoculated either with formic acid or with phosphate buffer solution (PBS). After the acid or the PBS was inoculated into the esophagi of the geese, two birds from each treatment were placed in a respiratory chamber as a measurement unit for 4 h in order to determine methane production rate. In experiment II and III, 6- and 7-wk-old male White Roman goslings were used, respectively. Birds were allocated to receive either formic acid or PBS solution injected into the ceca in experiment II. Acetic acid or PBS solution injected into the cecum were used for experiment III. After either the acids or the PBS solution were injected into the cecum, two birds from each treatment were placed in a respiratory chamber as a measurement unit for 3 h; each treatment was repeated 3 times. The results indicated that formic acid inoculated into the oesophagi of geese was quickly converted into methane. Compared with the PBS-injected group, methane production increased by 5.02 times in the formic acid injected group (4.32 vs. 0.86 mg/kg BW/d; p<0.05). Acetic acid injected into the ceca did not increase methane production; conversely, it tended to decrease methane production. The present study suggests that formic acid may be converted to methane in the ceca, and that acetic acid may not be a precursor of methane in the ceca of geese.

Effects of Acetic Acid on the Microbiological and Physicochemical Properties of Fresh Pork (초산용액 분무 처리가 신선돈육의 저장성에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the shelf life of fresh pork by spraying 2%(v/vf) acetic acid solution. Both treated with acetic acid and untreated pork were stored at $4^{\circ}C$. The spray of acetic acid solution was effective on growth inhibiton of aerobic and coliform bacteria. The pH, volatile basic nitrogen contents, and thiobarbituric acid value of fresh pork treated with acetic acid were lower than untreated pork during storage. Meat color was more darkened immediately after acetic acid treatment, but untreated pork was more darkened after 2 days storage.

  • The leaves of prunus padus L. var. Seoulensis Nakai distributed widely in Korea, were extracted with boiling alcohol(95%) after being mixed with calcium carbonate. The aqueous solution distilled off alcohol from the above filtered extract under the reduced pressure was evaporated to the dryness. The residue was extracted with acetic ether on the water-bath and the acetic ether solution extract was allowed to stand for a weck after removing out of acetic ether almostly, then a colorless necdles were Crystalized out which has the following characteristics : $C_{14}$ $H_{17}$ $O_{6}$ N, began to melt at 138-139.deg. bitter taste [.alpha.]$_$ $D^{20}$ ]=-26.99.deg. soluble in water, alcohol acetone acetic ether etc. slightly soluble in chloroform. It was proved to be identical with prunasine due to above characteristics and determination of Benzal-dehyde HCN and glucose respectively which was obtained on hydrolysis of this glycoside with emulsine.
