The ethanolic extract of Jasminum sambac leaves were tested for its cytotoxicity and possible antinociceptive activity in experimental animals. The extract showed potent cytotoxic activity in brine shrimp lethality assay and the LC50 was found only 25 mg/ml. The extract significantly and dose dependently inhibited the acetic acid induced writhing in mice (56.83%, P < 0.001 and 43.17%, P < 0.001 for 500 and 250 mg/kg body weight, respectively). The results supported its traditional uses.

The fresh fruit juice powder of Coccinia indica W.&A., (Cucurbitaceae, CJP) was studied for the possible activities of antiinflammatory and antinociceptive to rationalize the folkloric use of the plant juice as rasayana. CJP at the doses of 50-200 mg/kg caused a significant (P<0.05 to P<0.001) inhibition of paw edema induced by ${\lambda}$ carrageenin (1%) and histamine $(10^{-3}\;g/ml,\;0.1\;ml)$ in rats. The effect was comparable to the standard cycloxygenase inhibitor brufen at 100 mg/kg and protective percentages were 63.41% and 65.78% respectively. Administration of CJP (50-200 mg/kg) exhibited a moderate increase of the pain threshold on analgesy-meter induced mechanical pain. However CJP significantly prevented the writhing induced by acetic acid in mice and the percentages of inhibitions were 16.98%-35.47%, which is equivalent to 36.67% produced by brufen. These data indicate that the fruit juice of Coccinia indica rationalizes the traditional system of medicine.
The ethanolic extract of Fleurya interrupta Gaud, (Urticaceae) was tested for its possible neuropharmacological effects on experimental animals, For the primary neuropharmacological screening of this plant, the ethanolic extract of its aerial parts was subjected to preliminary evaluation for acute toxicity, antinociceptive activity and central nervous system (CNS) activities. At the doses of 125 and 250 mg/kg, the extract significantly (P < 0.01 and P < 0. 001) and dose-dependently increased the frequency of acetic acid induced writhing in mice. In the pentobarbitone induced sleeping time test, the extract at the above dose levels, significantly and dose-dependently decreased the pentobarbitone induced sleeping time (P < 0.001) and increased the time for onset of sleep (P < 0.001) in mice. In the open field and hole cross tests, test animals showed an increase in their movement in the both tests from the 2nd observation period (30 min) and persisted throughout the entire experimental period (240 min). These results of the extract may attribute a stimulating action on the CNS. On the basis of these findings, it can be assumed that the extract exerts its stimulating effect on the CNS in mice by interfering with the cortical function or increasing the effect of some CNS stimulating neurotransmitters.
To evaluate GC-rhEPO, human erythropoietin produced by recombinant DNA technique, its general pharmacological properties were investigated in experimental animals administering intravenously and in vitro test system. GC-rhEPO at doses of 70,700 and 7,000 IU/kg body weight had no influence on general behavior, spontaneous motor activity, thiopental-inducted sleeping time, writhing syndrome induced by acetic acid, strychnine-induced convulsions, charchoal meal propulsion in mice, and body temperature, gastric juice secretion, urine and electrolyte excretion in rats. In anesthetized rabbits, GC-rhEPO (70, 700 and 7,000 lU/kg, i.v.) did not alter respiratory rate, blood pressure, heat rate. In in vitro experiments, GC-rhEPO did not affect the contractions of the isolated ileum of guinea pigs and the muscle twitchs of isolated neuromuscular junction of the rats. In addition, GC-rhEPO did not affect the blood coagulation time and ADP-induced platelet aggregation in plasma of rabbits. Taken together, these results indicate that GC-rhEPO does not induce any adverse effects in the experimental animals.
Astilbes rhizoma has been used for headache, arthralgia, chronic bronchitis and stomachalgia in traditional chinese medicine. The analgesic activities and their components of Astilbe chinensis var. davidii Rhizomes were evaluated. The ether and ethylacetate fractions of 70% EtOH extract showed considerable analgesic activities by acetic acid induced writhing method. Compound $1{\sim}5$ were isolated from ethylacetate fraction and identified as gallic acid, (+)-catechin, (+)-gallocatechin, bergenin and 11-O-galloylbergenin on the basis of spectroscopic methods. Among them (+)-gallocatechin showed stronger analgesic activity than that of other compounds.
Traditionally, the thorns of Gleditsia sinensis LAM. (GS) have been used for the treatment of various types of cancer and heart, skin, vascular and inflammatory diseases. However, there have been no reports on the antinociceptive or antiinflammatory properties of the thorn of GS. The present study was carried out to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects of the ethanolic extract of GS (EEGS) and its sub-fractions. The administration of EEGS (500 mg/kg) or its butanolic fraction (50 and 100 mg/kg) reduced the frequency of the acetic acid-induced writhing reflex in mice. In addition, the administration of the butanolic fraction of EEGS (50 and 100 mg/kg) prolonged the latency of reaction at the hot plate in mice. The butanolic fraction of EEGS also inhibited lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide, prostaglandin $E_2$, and tumor necrosis factor-$\acute{a}$ production in the RAW 264.7 cell line. These results suggest that EEGS has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties and is a potential therapeutic for inflammation and nociception.

This study reports the analgesic, anti-inflammatory and membrane-stabilizing property of alcoholic extract of Ophiorrhiza nicobarica (ON), a wild herb, used as an anti-infective ethnomedicine of Nicobarese and Shompen tribes of Great Nicobar Island, India. We for the first time investigated the analgesic and antiinflammatory potential of this herb in acute, subacute and chronic model of inflammation in Swiss albino mice and Wistar albino rats, along with sheep RBC-induced sensitivity and membrane stabilization. The acetic acid induced writhing, tail flick and tail immersion tests are used as a model for evaluating analgesic activity; while the carrageenin-induced paw oedema was used as the model for acute inflammation, dextran-induced oedema as sub-acute and cotton-pellateinduced granuloma as chronic inflammatory model. The probable mode by which ON mediate its effect on inflammatory conditions was studied on sheep RBC-induced sensitivity and membrane stabilization. The in vitro results revealed that the ON extract possesses significant (P < 0.05) dose dependent analgesic and antiinflammatory activity at 200 and 300 mg/kg and its fractions at 50 mg/kg, p.o. respectively, compared to the control groups. However, the extract failed to exhibit membrane-stabilizing property as it unable to reduce the level of haemolysis of RBC exposed to hypotonic solution. The acute toxicity studies of ON extract in rats and mice revealed that the extract was nontoxic even up to 3.0 g/kg body weight of the animals, with a high safety profile. We have isolated ursolic acid, ${\beta}$-sitosterol and harmaline respectively, from the bioactive part of the extract. The results indicated that the O. nicobarica is indeed beneficial in primary health care, and suggest that its anti-inflammatory activity may not be related to membrane-stabilization.
Torilin was isolated from haxane fraction of Torilis Fructus extract. Torilin produced inhibition of the acetic acid-induced and phenylquinone-induced writhing syndrome at the oral doses of 30 and 90 mg/kg in mice. It also increased the pain threshold at the oral doses of 30, 90 and 270 mg/kg in the tail pressure method and the Randall-Selitto method. However, it did not show a hypothermic action at the oral doses of 30 and 90 mg/kg in mice. The compound exhibited strong anticarrageenan activity at the oral doses of 90 and 270 mg/kg in rats, and had inhibitory effect on the vascular permeability at the oral doses of 30 and 90 mg/kg in mice. It also showed potent inhibition of leucocyte emigration in CMC-pouch at the doses of 3 and 9 mg/rat, sc. The acute toxicity of torilin was very weak: the $LD_{50}$ values were more than 5000 mg/kg, po and 2000 mg/kg, ip in mice. From the above mentioned results, it was suggested that torilin had potent analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of an anti-inflammatory and analgesic action of the glucosamine HCl (Glucosamine) and SH-1 (Glucosamine + Oriental herbal composition combined group). Male sprague-Dawley rats $(200{\sim}250g)$ and ICR mice $(20{\sim}30g)$ were randomized and these experimental groups were divided into 4 groups. Two control group were given as negative control (saline) and positive control (Ibuprofen, 100 mg/kg) and two groups given as oral administration of Glucosamine (320 m/kg) and SH-1. Carrageenan induced paw edema test, hot plate method, croton oil induced granuloma, capillary permeability test and acetic acid writhing syndrome were also shown to be comparable in the SH-1 group to anti-inflammatory drug group such as positive control group (Ibuprofen). Although further studies should be performed to confirm the effects of SH-1, present results suggest that the combined administration of SH-1 have potential action in anti-inflammatory and analgesic action. It could be applicable for the improvement of arthritic symptoms as a new diet-supplement.
General phannacological properties of IH-901, a new pharmacological composition as an intestinal metabolite formed from ginseng protopanaxadiol saponins, were investigated in experimental animals administered orally and in vitro test system. IH-901 had no effects on general behavior, pentobarbital sleeping time, spontaneous motor activity, motor coordination of mice, normal body temperature, chemoshock produced by pentylenetetrazole and writhing syndromes induced by 0.8% acetic acid at the dose of 25 and 250 mg/kg. Gastric secretion of rats and intestinal motility in mice were not also influenced by the administration of IH-901 at doses of 25 and 250 mg/kg. IH-901 (25 and 250 mg/kg) did not change the mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate in conscious rats. IH-901 had no effect on the respiratory rate at the same doses when it was given to anesthetized rats. In in vitro experiments, IH-90l at the concentration of 25$\mu\textrm{g}$/L did not show any direct effect and inhibitory or augmentative action on the histamine-or acetylcholine-induced contractions in the isolated ileum of guinea-pig. Based on these results, it was concluded that IH-901 did not induce any adverse effects in experimental animals.
