This study aims to demonstrate the relationship between various factors and soil erosion or deposition, simulated from distributed rainfall-sediment-runoff model applications. We selected area, overland flow length, local slope as catchment representative characteristics among many important geographic factors and also used the grid-based accumulated rainfall as a representative hydro-climatic factor to assess the effect of these two different types of factors on erosion and deposition. The study catchment was divided based on the Strahler's stream order method for analysis of the relationship between area and erosion or deposition. Both erosion and deposition increased linearly as the catchment area became larger. Erosion occurred widely throughout the catchment, whereas deposition was observed at the grid-cells near the channel network with short overland flow lengths and mild slopes. In addition, the relationship results between grid-based accumulated rainfall and soil erosion or deposition showed that erosion increased gradually as rainfall amount increased, whereas deposition responded irregularly to variations in rainfall. Within the context of these results, it can be concluded that deposition is closely related with the geographic factors used in this study while erosion is significantly affected by rainfall.

This paper describes the development of real-time irrigation reservoir operation models that adequately allocate available water resources for paddy rice irrigation. Water requirement deficiency index(WRDI) was proposed as a guide to evaluate the operational performance of release schemes by comparing accumulated differences between daily release requirements for irrigated areas and actual release amounts. Seven reservoir release rules were developed, which are constant release rate method (CRR), mean storage curve method(MSC), frequency analysis method of reservoir storage rate(FAS), storage requirement curve method(SRC), constant optimal storage rate method (COS), ten-day optimal storage rate method(TOS), and release optimization method(ROM). Long-term forecasting reservoir operation model(LFROM) was formulated to find an optimal release scheme which minimizes WRDIs with long-term weather generation. Rainfall sequences, rainfall amount, and evaporation amount throughout the growing season were to be forecasted and the results used as an input for the model. And short-term forecasting reservoir operation model(SFROM) was developed to find an optimal release scheme which minimizes WRDIs with short-term weather forecasts. The model uses rainfall sequences forecasted by the weather service, and uses rainfall and evaporation amounts generated according to rainfall sequences.
This study developed an efficient management plan to improve the water quality by analyzing fluctuations in the ratio and amount of various organic substances in streams considering watershed characteristics and rainfall patterns. Monitoring was conducted on three streams and one lake over seven sessions during wet and dry seasons. Water quality indicators including total organic (TOC), refractory dissolved organic (RDOC), and particulate organic (POC) carbons were analyzed using high-temperature combustion oxidation. The three streams (Cheongmi, Yanghwa, and Bokha) displayed high TOC concentrations during the rainy season because the accumulated organic substances from the dry season were washed away by rainfall. By contrast, Paldang Lake exhibited a substantial decrease in TOC concentration due to dilution, which was influenced by watershed and rainfall characteristics. Across all streams and lakes, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) accounted for the highest proportion, at 77.5% of TOC, with RDOC making up 91% of DOC and 71% of TOC. Although POC contributed a small annual proportion to annual TOC, the concentration rapidly increased during late spring and early summer, with increases of 40.403%, 25.99%, and 27.388% in Cheongmi, Yanghwa, and Bokha, respectively. Continuous monitoring of RDOC is essential to identify seasonal fluctuations and changes due to rainfall events. Furthermore, intensive POC management during the rainy season, particularly in May and June, is potentially economical and efficient for water quality management.

This paper concerns a flow control method that can reduce rainwater containing non-point contamination accumulated on road surfaces during initial rainfall. In early rainfall, non-point pollutants are blocked from entering rivers and oceans and flow to sewage treatment plants. Afterwards, rainwater, which has been removed from the non-point pollution source through jet lag, is safely flowing into the river.
The climate change has been observed in Korea as well as in the entire world recently. The rainstorm has been gradually increased and then the damage has been grown. It is getting important to predict short-term rainfall. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) generates numerical model outputs which are computed by Global Data Assimilation and Prediction System (GDAPS) and Regional Data Assimilation and Prediction System (RDAPS). The KMA predicts rainfall using RDAPS results. RDAPS model generates 48 hours data which is organized 3 hours data accumulated at 00UTC and 12UTC. RDAPS results which are organized 3 hours time scale are converted into daily rainfall to compare observed daily rainfall. In this study, 9 cases are applied to convert RDAPS results to daily rainfall data. The MAP (mean areal precipitation) in Geum river basin are computed by using KMA which are 2005 are used. Finally, the best case which gives the close value to the observed rainfall data is obtained using the average absolute relative error (AARE) especially for the Geum River basin.

This study aims to establish the correlations between variables related to a slope during rainfall and factor of safety (FOS) and displacement using a coupling analysis method that is designed to consider both in rainfall conditions. With the recent development of measurement technologies, the approach of using the measurement data in the field has become easier. Particularly, they have been obtained in tests to determine the real-time safety and movement of a slope; however, a specific method has not been finalized. In addition, collected measurement data for recognizing the FOS and displacement in real-time with a specific relevance is difficult, and risks of uncertainty, such as in soil parameters and time, exist. In this study, the correlations between various slope-related variables (i.e., rainfall intensity, rainfall duration, angle of the slope, and mechanical properties including strength parameters of selected three types of soil; loamy sand, silt loam, sand) and the FOS and displacement are analyzed in order of seepage analysis, slope stability analysis and slope displacement analysis. Moreover, the methodology of coupling analysis is verified and a fundamental understanding of the factors that need to be considered in real-time observations is gained. The results show that the contributions of the abovementioned variables vary according to the soil type. Thus, the tendency of the displacement also differs by the soil type and variables but not same tendency with FOS. The friction angle and cohesion are negative while the rainfall duration and rainfall intensity are positive with the displacement. This suggests that understanding their correlations is necessary to determine the safety of a slope in real-time using displacement data. Additionally, databases considering rainfall conditions and a wide range of soil characteristics, including hydraulic and mechanical parameters, should be accumulated.
During the dry periods, many types of pollutants are being accumulated on the paved surface by vehicle activities and the accumulated various pollutants are inflowing into the near watershed areas for the rainfall periods. Particularly, bridges are the centralized region to be the surface runoff of the stromwater due to the high ratio of the impermeable area. Also, the metals, toxic chemicals and sediments originated from bridges could be strongly influenced to the watershed areas during the runoff. Therefore, the present study is achieved to provide washoff characteristics and correlation from the bridge during rainfall periods. The result shows that the EMC ranges for 95% confidence intervals in a bridge land use are 10.12~128.09 mg/L for TSS, 6.07~21.15 mg/L for BOD, 2.10~6.70 mg/L for TN and 0.06~0.85 mg/L for TP.

This study is the result between the variation of fuel moisture and the risk of forest fire through measuring the change of moisture containing ratio on-site and its average analysis for each diameter of surface dead fuels in the forest. The measurement was performed on six days from the day after a rainfall. The fuel moisture on-site was measured on the day when the accumulated rainfall was above 5.0mm, and the measurements was 2 times in spring. From the pine forest which were distributed around Samcheok and Donghae in Kangwondo, three regions were selected by loose, medium, and dense forest density, and the fuel moisture was measured on the ranges which are less than 0.6cm, 0.6-3.0cm, 3.0-6.0cm, and more than 6.0cm in the forest for six days from the day after a rainfall. The study showed that the moisture containing ratio converged on 3 - 4 days for surface deads fuels which diameter are less than 3.0cm and the convergence was made more than six days for ones which diameters are more than 3.0cm except the surface dead fuel of 3.0-6.0cm diameter of loose forest density.
This study is the result between the variation of fuel moisture and the risk of forest fire through measuring the change of moisture containing ratio on-site and its average analysis for fallen leaves layer, humus layer, and soil layer in the forest. The measurement was performed on six days from the day after a rainfall. The fuel moisture on-site was measured on the day when the accumulated rainfall was above 5.0mm, and the measurements was 2 times in spring and 1 time in fall. From the pine forest which were distributed around Samcheok and Donghae in Kangwondo, three regions were selected by loose, medium, and dense forest density, and the fuel moisture was measured on fallen leaves layer, humus layer, and soil layer in the forest. for six days from the day after a rainfall. The study showed that the moisture containing ratio converged on 3 - 4 days in spring and fall for fallen leaves layer, and the convergence was made more than six days in spring and fall for the humus layer. In the other case of soil layer, the variation of moisture containing ratio after rainfall was not distinguishable regardless of season.
The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission(TRMM) Satellite was launched in November 1997, carving into orbit the first space-borne Precipitation Radar(PR). The main objective of the TRMM is to obtain and study multi-year science data sets of tropical and subtropical rainfall measurements. In the present investigation, the characteristics of heavy rainfall cases over Korea in 1998 and 1999 are analyzed using the TRMM/PR dat3. We compare the rainrate measured from TRMM/PR with the accumulated rainfall data for 10 minutes tv Automatic Weather System(AWS). Especially, horizontal cross-section of rainrate with height and longitude in the precipitating clouds are investigated. As a result of the comparison with GMS-5 IR1, the TRMM/PR data delineate well the rain type( i.e. convective, stratiform cloud and others), height of storm top and instantaneous rainrate in the precipitating clouds. The vertical structure with height and horizontal cross-section of rainrate along the longitude show the orographic effect on the rainfall. TRMM/PR instrument measures the rainrate below 6 ㎜/hr more than AWS rainguages and inclined to underestimate the rainrate than rainguages for the whole area.
