  • During the construction of externally prestressed 7-span continuous segmental bridge, cracks beyond permissible limit were found at anchor zone of expansion joint segment. To eliminate this problem, tension side of diaphragm was prestressed by post-tensioning bars in vertical and horizontal direction. To investigate this remedy is acceptable, stresses of reinforcing bars and concrete surface were measured for the real structure in the field. The measurement was performed through each step of prestressing sequence during construction. Also to investigage stresses induced by live load, static load test was performed and the results was analyzed. In this paper it will be presented the procedure and results for this experimental study along with comparison with analytical study.

  • Nuclear containment structure is the last barrier for being secure from any nuclear power plant accident. Even though the safety requirements of nuclear power plant have been focused on removing accidental situations, nuclear containment structure must reserve the sufficient resisting capacity to any accident because it works as the last barrier. The acceptable nuclear containment structure makes possible to limit the effect of internal accidents and to avoid radioactive release. In this study, to conduct the numerical analysis for the structural safety of a containment structure, loss of coolant accident (LOCA) is considered as the basic accidental load, and Wolsong containment structure is considered as a target structure. The CANDU containment structure, such as Wolsong containment structure, is a prestressed concrete shell structure which has dome and is reinforced with bonded tendons. The evaluation of ultimate pressure capacity was conducted by nonlinear analysis of a prestressed concrete containment structure.

  • The performance of relational database is measured by the number of disk accesses necessary to transfer data from disk to main memory. The paper proposes to vertically partition relations into fragments and to allow attribute replication to reduce the number of disk accesses. To reduce the computational time, heuristic search method using genetic algorithm is used. Genetic algorithm used employs a rank-based-sharing fitness function and elitism. Desirable parameters of genetic algorithm are obtained through experiments and used to find the solutions. Solutions of attribute replication and attribute non-replication problems are compared. Optimal solutions obtained by branch and bound method and by heuristic solutions(genetic algorithm) are also discussed. The solution method proposed is able to solve large-sized problems within acceptable time limit and shows solutions near the optimal value.

  • At present, the health risks associated with the natural radionuclides of ground water have become a concern as potential social problems. However, there are no regulatory actions or control strategies for such risks. Therefore, we have investigated and discussed the risks and associated management strategies for radionuclides in other countries. US EPA has proposed MCL (300 pCi/L) and AMCL (4,000 pCi/L) for radon, and 30 ppb for uranium, 15 pCi/L for gross-alpha and 5 pCi/L for radium as final MCLs. Also, Canada, WHO and European countries have their inherent management levels. Finally, we suggested several criteria for setting guidelines in our countries including exposure related criteria such as geological distribution, occurrence, exposure probability distribution, exposure population and multimedia exposure assessment, acceptable risk, and cost -benefit analysis. The national-scale exposure and risk assessment, and economic analysis should be conducted for producing and aggregating the representative information on these criteria.

  • The study was to analyze on the hard and soft tissue profiles in mixed dentition. The subject consisted of 100 males and 100 females from 9 to 12 years of age and with a normal occlusion and acceptable profiles. On the basis of SnH line and SnV line, the author traced all the cephalograms and calculated the mean value and standard deviation in each measuring category and evaluated the sexual difference, the proper limit of development. The obtained results were as follows; 1. Individual variations of the lower facial part were larger the upper facial part in depth and height. 2. Sexual difference of lower facial part was significant in depth and height. 3. All the measured values to the SnH and SnV line were larger in male than in female but revealed resemblance in the profilogram. 4. The measured values of the region of nose, upper lip and point A showed stable tendency.

  • Dynamic forces due to mechanical and hydraulic related causes are always exerted on operating turbomachinery such as centrifugal pumps. To ensure the safety and the reliability of the pump. the magnitudes of the vibration must be kept within an acceptable limit. The focus of this paper is on the identification of the vibration behavior and the quantitative analysis of the hydraulic excitation forces. As the structure becomes more complex finite element analysis is essential to accurately predict the vibration characteristics and the excitation forces, This paper presents an experimental and analytical technique to find and solve to vibration problems in double volute double suction centrifugal pump. Measured vibration data due to the dynamic forces are presented and individual causes are identified, finally excitation forces of the pump are inversely estimated at each frequency on operating conditions.

  • As the requirements on precision and speed of motion in chip mounter increase, vibration forces are always exerted on operating conditions. To insure safety of the chip mounter, the vibration must be kept within an acceptable limit. The focus of this paper is on the identification of dynamic load characteristics and the estimation of static and dynamic stiffness characteristics for Frame Base by judicious selection of the number and the location of the support points. This study carried an analytical and experimental method to estimate the dynamic characteristics in structure.

  • Railway safety aims to ensure that railways take appropriate action to limit the risk of injury to persons or damage to property, to acceptable levels. Accreditation system specifies railway safety requirements to be included in a railway safety management system by any organization seeking to demonstrate the ability to control the processes that determine the acceptability of railway safety activities. The objective of this research is to investigate the international accreditation system for railway safety management. The yield information is quite valuable to operate collaborative processes with all interfacing transport operators and undertakings to facilitate risk control across the railway system.

  • A semi-continuous and automated method for quantifying atmospheric ammonia at the parts per billion level has been developed. The instrument consists of a high efficiency diffusion scrubber, an electrolytic on-line anion exchange device, and a conductivity detector. Water soluble gases in sampled air diffuse through the porous membrane and are absorbed in an absorbing solution. Interferences are eliminated by using an anion exchange devises. The electrical conductivity of the solution is measured without chromatographic separation. The collection efficiency was over 99%. Over the 0-200 ppbv concentration range, the calibration was linear with $r^2$ = 0.99. The lower limit of detection was 0.09 ppbv. A parallel analysis of Seoul air over several days using this method and a diffusion scrubber coupled to an ion chromatography system showed acceptable agreement, $r^2$ = 0.940 (n = 686). This method can be applied for ambient air monitoring of ammonia.

  • In this paper, the authors introduced a new approach to find the optimal collision avoidance maneuver considering multi threatening objects within short period, while satisfying constraints on the fuel limit and the acceptable collision probability. A preliminary effort in applying a genetic algorithm (GA) to those kinds of problems has also been demonstrated through a simulation study with a simple case problem and various fitness functions. And then, GA is applied to the complex case problem including multi-threatening objects. Two distinct collision avoidance maneuvers are dealt with: the first is in-track direction of collision avoidance maneuver. The second considers radial, in-track, cross-track direction maneuver. The results show that the first case violates the collision probability threshold, while the second case does not violate the threshold with satisfaction of all conditions. Various factors for analyzing and planning the optimal collision avoidance maneuver are also presented.
