  • Leptospirosis has been known as endemic disease in Korea since 1984. Wild rodent, mostly Apodemus agrarius, has been known as an important source of leptospiral infection especially in rainy circumstances in harvest reason of rural area. The infection rates of Leptospira interrogans in field rodents, Apodemus agrarius, was investigated by culture and PCR detection of leptospiral DNA, and compared with previous data. Furthermore, the serogroup and serovar were investigated. Two hundred twenty two Apodemus agrarius were captured during October to December 1996. Spirohaetes were isolated from 22 (9.9%) and leptospiral DNA was detected in an additional six rodents (12.6%). Subsequent cross-agglutinin absorption test, monoclonal antibody reactivity classified 21 cultures among 22 isolates as Leptospira interrogans serogroup Icterohemorrhagiae serovar lai. The above data did not differ from previous survey in 1984 to 1987. There was no significant change of Leptospira interrogans infection in field rodents in Korea.

  • Effects of application time And rate of chlorine on the chlorine absorption and distribution at different stalk positions of the plants were Investigated in burley tobacco grown under the pot condition. Treatment consisted of 6 application times (from 2 weeks before transplanting to 8 weeks after transplanting with 2 weeks' interval) and 2 application rates (2g and 4g-KCl/pot) by 6X2 factorial experimental design. The tobacco plants took up the chlorine rapidly just after chlorine application, and the chlorine content of leaf was increased proportionally to the rate of chlorine application. The chlorine was accumulated when much in lower leaves when chlorine was applied early, while the chlorine accumulated much in upper leaves when chlorine was applied late. The chlorine content of leaf was negatively correlated to the degree of brightness, red color and yellow color of cured leaf. Significant Increases In cured leaf ratio, leaf thickness, leaf weight and weight Per unit leaf area of harvested leaf were obtained with increased chlorine application. When the chlorine was applied early, the leaf weight showed Increasing tendency.

  • This study has been analyzed the sound performance of the noise barriers with respect to the configuration of the front perforated panel geometries and the filled absorption materials. Noise barriers' acoustic performance should be required to meet 0.7 of NRC value at least. The global absorbing performance of the barriers have been investigated by changing the opening ratio of the front perforated panel and the absorbing characteristics of the absorbing material using two microphone method. Therefore, It it possible to obtain to increase acoustic performance of the specific frequency ranges by designing the perforate rates of the front panel and absorbing characteristics of the absorbing materials inside, as well. This study try to find out the possibilities of applying the absorbing noise barrier to railway usage.

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) does not provide sufficient resistance against impacts and blast loads, and the brittle structure of RC fails to protect against fractures due to the lack of shock absorption. Investigations on improving its resistance against explosion and impact have been actively conducted on high-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (HPFRCCs), such as fiber-reinforced concrete and ultra-high-performance concrete. For these HPFRCCs, however, tensile strength and toughness are still significantly lower compared to compressive strength due to their limited fiber volume fraction. Therefore, in this study, the tensile behavior of slurry-infiltrated fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (SIFRCCs), which can accommodate a large number of steel fibers, was analyzed under static and dynamic loading to improve the shortcomings of RC and to enhance its explosion and impact resistance. The fiber volume fractions of SIFRCCs were set to 4%, 5%, and 6%, and three strain rate levels (maximum strain rate: 250 s-1) were applied. As a result, the tensile strength exceeded 15 MPa under static load, and the dynamic tensile strength reached a maximum of 40 MPa. In addition, tensile characteristics, such as tensile strength, deformation capacity, and energy absorption capacity, were improved as the fiber volume fraction and strain rate increased.

  • The quantitative assessment of the penetration of organic solvents through skin is necessary for the evaluation of health hazards in occupational environments. We investigated the rate of dermal penetration when mixed or single forms of organic solvents were placed into a diffusion cell in vitro or into an experimental animal in vivo. The diffusion rates of methanol. toluene, and styrene were 6.07, 0.129, and 0.046 mg/$cm^2$/h, respectively. When skin was exposed to the mixed solvent of methanol and toluene, the penetration rate of toluene did not change significantly (0.110 mg/$cm^2$/h). However, the rate of methanol penetration increased to 43.90 mg/$\textrm{cm}^2$/h. The penetration rate of methanol also increased significantly to 54.69 mg/$cm^2$/h by mixing it with styrene. The concentration of methanol in the blood was monitored during the epicutaneous exposure in rats. The blood concentration of methanol was increased by mixing methanol with toluene as seen in the in vitro experiments. These results showed that the penetration rate of organic solvents would be enhanced by mixing them with other solvents.

  • This paper analyzes the local specific absorption rates (SAR's) averaged over 1 g and 10 g in a human head model in contact with a mobile phone operating at 835 MHz. The used numerical method is a total field finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique. The phone was simulated with a conducting box, a plastic case, and a whip antennal composed of a monopole and a helix. The discrete human model of the spatial resolution 3 mm is based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), computerized tomography (CT) and anatomical images. The near field and far field and far field patterns were analyzed for extended and retracted phone. The two methods to take the volumes of the weights, 1 g or 10 g in tissue are proposed and compared to offer a reproductive technique for SAR estimations.

  • Acetaminophen (APAP) suppositories with active ingredients, i.e., polyethylene glycol (PEG), Witepsol H-15 (WH), were prepared for hospital use and investigated on their drug release characteristics and pharmacokinetics. WH was employed as oil-soluble base with an aim of reducing fragility and mucosa irritancy that are common drawbacks found in PEG suppositories. Also hollow type suppository was tried as compared with conventional type suppository. Drug release tests revealed that in most formulations, more than $80\%$ of loaded APAP were released within 20 minutes, except for APAP-WH hollow type suppositories. Significant differences in the plasma concentration profile were observed among four type suppositories. $T_{max}$ of APAP-PEG and APAP-WH suppositories were 90 and 60 minutes, respectively, in hollow types. APAP-WH hollow type suppositories demonstrated fast absorption rates of APAP as compared with those of APAP-PEG suppositories. No burst effect was observed from APAP-WH suppository in contrast to APAP conventional type suppository, whereas AUCs of all the suppositories were similar. APAP-WH hollow type suppository may be an useful dosage form for hospital use.

  • We studied the electrical characteristics of low-k SiOCH interlayer dielectric(ILD) films fabricated by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). BTMSM precursor was evaporated and introduced with the flow rates from 16 sccm to 25 sccm by 1 sccm step with the constant flow rate of 60 sccm $O_2$ in process chamber. The vibrational groups of SiOCH thin films were analyzed by FT!IR absorption lines, and the dielectric constant of the low-k SiOCH thin films were obtained by measuring C-V characteristic curves. The heat treatment on SiOCH thin films reduced the FTIR absorption intensity of the Si-O-$CH_3$ bonding group and Si-$CH_3$ bonding group but increased the intensity of Si-O-Si(C) bonding group. The SiOCH ILD films could have low dielectric constant $k\;{\simeq}\;2$ and also be reduced further by decreasing the $CH_3$ group density and increasing Si-O-Si(C) group density through annealing process.

  • Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies are arguably the most important AGN subclass in investigating the origin of the black hole mass-galaxy stellar velocity dispersion (MBH-${\sigma}$) relation because of their high accretion rates close to the Eddington limit. Currently, it is still under discussion whether NLS1s are off from the local MBH-${\sigma}$ relation. We select a sample of 325 NLS1 at relatively low redshift (z<0.1) from the SDSS DR7 by constraining FWHM of $H{\beta}$ in the range of 800-2,200 km/s. Among them, we measured stellar velocity dispersion of 40 objects which show strong stellar absorption lines, e.g. Mg b triplet(${\sim}5175{\AA}$), Fe($5270{\AA}$). In contrast, the other 285 objects show too weak stellar absorption lines to measure velocity dispersion. Using the sample of 40 objects with stellar velocity dispersion measurements, we investigate whether NLS1s follow the same MBH-${\sigma}$ relation as normal galaxies and broad line AGNs. We also test the reliability of the width of narrow lines as a surrogate of stellar velocity dispersion by comparing directly measured stellar velocity dispersion with ${\sigma}$ inferred from [O III], [N II], [S II] line widths, respectively. We will discuss the connection between AGN activity in NLS1s and galaxy evolution based on these results.

  • Condensation heat transfer characteristics have been investigated experimentally when a water vapor is condensed on the outside of a horizontal copper tube in a condenser. This problem is of particular interest in the design of a LiBr-water absorption system. Hydrophilic surface modification was performed to increase the wettability on the copper tube. The optimum hydrophilic treatment condition using acethylene and nitrogen as reaction gas is also studied in detail. The results obtained indicate that the optimum reaction gas ratio of acethylene to nitrogen for hydrophilic surface modification was found to be 7 : 3 for the best condensation heat transfer. In the wide ranges of coolant inlet temperatures, and coolant mass flow rates, both the condensation heat transfer rate and the condensation heat transfer coefficient of a hydrophilic copper tube are increased substantially, compared with those of a conventional copper tube used in a condenser. It is also found that the condensation heat transfer enhancement by the hydrophilic surface modification still emains even after a hundred cycles of wet/dry processes.
