  • A variety of studies for indoor positioning are now being in progress due to the limit of GPS that becomes obsolete in the room. However, most of them are based on private wireless networks and the situation is difficult to commercialize them since they are expensive in terms of installation and maintenance costs, non-real-time, and not accurate. This paper applies the mark recognition algorithm used in existing augmented reality applications to the indoor vehicle positioning application. It installs floor marks on the ground, performs the perspective transformation on it and decodes the internal data of the mark and, as a result, it obtains an absolute coordinate. Through the geometric analysis, it obtains current position (relative coordinates) of a vehicle away from the mark and the heading direction of the vehicle. The experiment results show that when installing the marks every 5 meter, an error under about 30 cm occurred. In addition, it is also shown that the mark recognition rate is 43.2% of 20 frames per second at the vehicle speed of 20km/h. Thus, it is thought that this idea is commercially valuable.

  • Recently, a technique for acquiring spatial information data using UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) has been greatly developed. It is a very crucial issue of the GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping system that passes way point in the unmanned airframe and finally measures the accurate image and stable localization to the desired destination. Though positioning using DGPS (Differential Global Navigation System) or RTK-GPS (Real Time Kinematic-GPS) guarantee highly accurate, they are more expensive than the construction of a single positioning system using a single GPS. In the case of a low-priced single GPS system, the stability of the positioning data deteriorates. Therefore, it is necessary to supplement the uncertainty of the absolute position data of the UAV and to improve the accuracy of the current position data economically in the operating state of the UAV. The aim of this study was to present an algorithm enhancing the stability of position data in a single GPS mode of UAV with multiple GPS. First, the arrangement of multiple GPS receivers through the center of gravity of the UAV were examined. Next, MD (Mahalanobis Distance) is applied to detect instantaneous errors of GPS data in advance and eliminate outliers to increase the accuracy of previously collected multiple GPS data. Processing procedure for multiple GPS reception data by applying the center of the triangular method were presented to improve the position accuracy. Second, UAV navigation systems integrated multiple GPS through configuration of the UAV specifications were implemented. Using the unmanned airframe equipped with multiple GPS receivers, GPS data is measured with the TCM (Triangular Center Method). In addition, UAV equipped with multiple GPS were operated in study area and locational accuracy of multiple GPS of UAV with VRS (Virtual Reference Station) GNSS surveying were compared. The result showed that the error factors are compensated, and the error range are reduced, resulting in the reliability of the corrected value. In conclusion, the result in this paper is expected to realize high-precision position estimation at low cost in UAV using multiple low-cost GPS receivers.

  • A versatile micro-robotic platform for micro/nano scale assembly has been demanded in a variety of application areas such as micro-biology and nanotechnology. In the near future, a flexible and compact platform could be effectively used in a scanning electron microscope chamber. We are developing a platform that consists of miniature mobile robots and a compact positioning stage with multi degree-of-freedom. This paper presents the design and the implementation of a low-cost and compact multi degree of freedom position sensor that is capable of measuring absolute translational and rotational displacement. The proposed sensor is implemented by using a CMOS type image sensor and a target with specific hole patterns. Experimental design based on statistics was applied to finding optimal design of the target. Efficient algorithms for image processing and absolute position decoding are discussed. Simple calibration to eliminate the influence of inaccuracy of the fabricated target on the measuring performance also presented. The developed sensor was characterized by using a laser interferometer. It can be concluded that the sensor system has submicron resolution and accuracy of ${\pm}4{\mu}m$ over full travel range. The proposed vision-based sensor is cost-effective and used as a compact feedback device for implementation of a micro robotic platform.

  • Effective monitoring, reliable data analysis, and rational data interpretations are challenges for engineers who are specialized in bridge health monitoring. This paper demonstrates how to use the Global Positioning System (GPS) and accelerometer data to accurately extract static and quasi-static displacements of the bridge induced by ambient effects. To eliminate the disadvantages of the two separate units, based on the characteristics of the bias terms derived from the GPS and accelerometer respectively, a wavelet based multi-step filtering method by combining the merits of the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) with the discrete stationary wavelet transform (SWT) is proposed so as to address the GPS deformation monitoring application more efficiently. The field measurements are carried out on an existing suspension bridge under the normal operation without any traffic interference. Experimental results showed that the frequencies and absolute displacements of the bridge can be accurate extracted by the proposed method. The integration of GPS and accelerometer can be used as a reliable tool to characterize the dynamic behavior of large structures such as suspension bridges undergoing environmental loads.

  • Atmospheric water vapor is a key variable in numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, but it is a crucial factor to limit the accuracy of high-precision GPS positioning technique. For both issues, knowledge about the amount of water vapor is extremely important. In this study, we perform a simulation study to utilize GPS signals through a developed tomographic scheme to retrieve 3D structure of atmospheric wet refractivity, which may be assimilated into NWP models for advancing forecasting or position calculation for improving GPS positioning accuracy. For the purpose of knowing the absolute accuracy of the developed tomographic method, a well-defined temporal and spatial varying state of atmospheric profile is utilized. Under such circumstance, several factors that may influence the retrievals can be easily examined and their impacts may be clearly quantified. They include the values of the positional dilution of precision (PDOP) factors of the GPS signals, ... etc. Based upon the use of a variety spectrum of adjustable factors, many interesting findings are obtained. For example, the more is the number of the observed GPS signals the better becomes the retrievals as expected. Also, the smaller is the PDOP value the better becomes the retrievals.

  • In order to establish eLoran (enhanced Long Range Navigation) system, it needs the advancement of receiver, transmitter, data channel addition for Loran information, differential Loran sites for compensating Loran-c signal and ASFs (Additional Secondary Factors) database, etc. In addition, the precise synchronization of transmitting station to the UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is essential if Loran delivers the high absolute accuracy of navigation demanded for maritime harbor entrance. For better timing synchronization to the UTC among transmitting stations, it is necessary to measure and monitor the transmission delay of the station, and the correction information of the transmitting station should be provided to the user's receivers. In this paper we presented the measurement method of absolute delay of Pohang Loran transmitting station and developed a time delay measurement system and a phase monitoring system for Loran station. We achieved -2.23 us as a result of the absolute phase delay of Pohang station and the drift of Loran pulse of the station was measured about 0.3 us for a month period. Therefore it is necessary to measure the delay offset of transmitting station and to compensate the drift of the Loran signal for the high accuracy application of PNT (Positioning, Navigation and Timing).

  • The main limiting factors of Precise Point Positioning(PPP) accuracy are errors in broadcast satellite orbits, clock errors, and the others, which are receiver-dependent errors(ionospheric, tropospheric refraction, multipath, and tides, etc.). Therefore, to facilitate high precision PPP, precise orbits/clocks corrections, the receiver-dependent errors corrections have to apply to multi frequency GNSS measurements for an ionosphere free combination and integer ambiguity resolution in real-time. Currently, there are many Analysis Centers, which offer the precise corrections stream computed in real-time using the global or regional GNSS tracking network. The goles of this research considered performances of the real-time static PPP with using RTCM corrections from NTRIP casters. For this, the corrections streams of Analysis Centers received via NTRIP does apply to GNSS data of check points individually, as well as jointly, in accordance with various session lengths. After that, have compared the PPP results from the corrections streams with each other, and with Standard Point Positioning(SPP) results.

  • The Long Range Navigation (LORAN) had been mainly used world-wide until GPS (Global Positioning System) activation. In particular. it was essential junctionality for the ships to sail the oceans. However, according to the industry's developing, the current accuracy of Loran is insufficient for the utilization such as the harbour approach, the land navigation and the field of precise timing. Therefore it is necessary the study on the improvement of the positioning accuracy of Loran. The method of its improvement is to measure and compensate the propagation time delay, that is, additional secondary factor (ASF) between the transmitter and user's receiver. This study shows the technique for the absolute time delay measurement without a time of coincidence (TOC) table, and represents the ASF measurement result between Pohang transmitter station(9930M) and each measure points.

  • This paper introduces a study to estimate the user altitude in need of rescue in an emergency. The altitude is estimated by using the barometric pressure sensor embedded in the smartphone. Compared to GPS, which is degraded in urban or indoor environments, it has the advantage of not having spatial restrictions. With the endless development of smartphone hardware, it is possible to estimate the absolute altitude using the measured value if only the bias of the embedded barometric pressure sensor is applied. The altitude information of the person in need of rescue in an emergency is a great help in reducing rescue time. Since time is tight, we propose online calibration that provides the barometric pressure sensor bias used for altitude estimation through database. Furthermore, experiments were conducted to understand the characteristics of the barometric pressure sensor, which is greatly affected by wind. At the end, the altitude estimation performance was confirmed through an actual field tests in various floors in the building.

  • In Wireless Sensor Network, the sensor node localization is important issue for information tracking, event detection, routing. Generally, in wireless sensor network localization, the absolute positions of certain anchor nodes are required based on the use of global positioning system, then all the other nodes are approximately localized using various algorithms based on a coordinate system of anchor DV-Hop is a localized, distributed, hop by hop positioning algorithm in wireless sensor network where only a limited fraction of nodes have self positioning capability. However, instead of uniformly distributed network, in anisotropic network with possible holes, DV-Hop's performance is very low. To address this issue, we propose Group based DV-Hop (GDV-Hop) algorithm. Best contribution of GDV-Hop is that it performs localization with reduced error compared with DV-Hop in anisotropic network.
