Position estimation is one of the most important functions for the mobile robot navigating in the unstructured environment. Most of previous localization schemes estimate current position and pose of mobile robot by applying various localization algorithms with the information obtained from sensors which are set on the mobile robot, or by recognizing an artificial landmark attached on the wall, or objects of the environment as natural landmark in the indoor environment. Several drawbacks about them have been brought up. To compensate the drawbacks, a new localization method that estimates the absolute position of the mobile robot by using a fixed camera on the ceiling in the corridor is proposed. And also, it can improve the success rate for position estimation using the proposed method, which calculates the real size of an object. This scheme is not a relative localization, which decreases the position error through algorithms with noisy sensor data, but a kind of absolute localization. The effectiveness of the proposed localization scheme is demonstrated through the experiments.
Recently, with the development of service robots and with the new concept of ubiquitous world, the position estimation of mobile objects has been raised to an important problem. As pre-liminary research results, some of the localization schemes are introduced, which provide the absolute location of the moving objects subjected to large errors. To implement a precise and convenient localization system, a new absolute position estimation method for a mobile robot in indoor environment is proposed in this paper. Design and implementation of the localization system comes from the usage of active beacon systems (based upon RFID technology). The active beacon system is composed of an RFID receiver and an ultra-sonic transmitter: 1. The RFID receiver gets the synchronization signal from the mobile robot and 2. The ultra-sonic transmitter sends out the traveling signal to be used for measuring the distance. Position of a mobile robot in a three dimensional space can be calculated basically from the distance information from three beacons and the absolute position information of the beacons themselves. Since it is not easy to install the beacons at a specific position precisely, there exists a large localization error and the installation time takes long. To overcome these problems, and provide a precise and convenient localization system, a new auto calibration algorithm is developed in this paper. Also the extended Kalman filter has been adopted for improving the localization accuracy during the mobile robot navigation. The localization accuracy improvement through the proposed auto calibration algorithm and the extended Kalman filter has been demonstrated by the real experiments.
This paper proposes an efficient localization algorithm in the RFID sensor space for the precise localization of a mobile robot. The RFID sensor space consists of embedded sensors and a mobile robot. The embedded sensors, that is tags are holding the absolute position data and provide them to the robot which carries a reader and requests the absolute position fur localization. The reader, it is called as antenna usually, gets several tag data at the same time within its readable range. It takes time to read all the tags and to process the data to estimate the position, which is a major factor to deteriorate the localization accuracy. In this paper, an efficient algorithm to estimate the position and orientation of the mobile robot as quickly as possible has been proposed. Along with the algorithm, a new allocation of the tags in the RFID sensor space is also proposed to improve the localization accuracy. The proposed algorithms are demonstrated and verified through the real experiments.
In this paper, we proposed localization method of mobile robot using color landmark mounted on ceiling. This work is composed 2 parts : landmark recognition part which finds the position of multiple landmarks in image and identifies them and absolute position estimation part which estimates the location and orientation of mobile robot in indoor environment. In landmark recognition part, mobile robot detects artificial color landmarks using simple histogram intersection method in rg color space which is insensitive to the change of illumination. Then absolute position estimation part calculates relative position of the mobile robot to the detected landmarks. For the verification of proposed algorithm, ceiling-orientated camera was installed on a mobile robot and performance of localization was examined by designed artificial color landmarks. As the result of test, mobile robot could achieve the reliable landmark detection and accurately estimate the position of mobile robot in indoor environment.
This paper proposes a method of localization of vehicle especially the horizontal position for the purpose of recognizing the driving lane. Through tracking road signs, the relative position between the vehicle and the sign is calculated and the absolute position is obtained using the known information from the regulation for installation. The proposed method uses Kalman filter for road sign tracking and analyzes the motion using the pinhole camera model. In order to classify the road sign, ORB(Oriented fast and Rotated BRIEF) features from the input image and DB are matched. From the absolute position of the vehicle, the driving lane is recognized. The Experiments are performed on videos from the highway driving and the results shows that the proposed method is able to compensate the common GPS localization errors.
Ubiquitous location based services, offer helpful services anytime and anywhere by using real-time location information of objects based on ubiquitous network. Particularly, autonomous mobile robots can be a solution for various applications related to ubiquitous location based services, e.g. in hospitals, for cleaning, at airports or railway stations. However, a meaningful and still unsolved problem for most applications is to develop a robust and cheap positioning system. A typical example of position measurements is dead reckoning that is well known for providing a good short-term accuracy, being inexpensive and allowing very high sampling rates. However, the measurement always has some accumulated errors because the fundamental idea of dead reckoning is the integration of incremental motion information over time. The other hand, a localization system using RFID offers absolute position of robots regardless of elapsed time. We construct an absolute positioning system based on RFID and investigate how localization technique can be enhanced by RFID through experiment to measure the location of a mobile robot. Tags are placed on the floor at 5cm intervals in the shape of square in an arbitrary space and the accuracy of position measurement is investigated . To reduce the error and the variation of error, a weighting function based on Gaussian function is used. Different weighting values are applied to position data of tags since weighting values follow Gaussian function.
Underwater localization is a crucial capability for reliable operation of various types of underwater vehicles including submarines and underwater robots. However, sea water is almost impermeable to high-frequency electromagnetic waves, and thus absolute position fixes from Global Positioning System (GPS) are not available in the water. The use of acoustic telemetry systems such as Long Baseline (LBL) is a practical option for underwater localization. However, this telemetry network system needs to be pre-deployed and its availability cannot always be assumed. This study focuses on demonstrating the validity of terrain-based localization techniques in a GPS-denied underwater environment. Since terrain-based localization leads to a nonlinear estimation problem, nonlinear filtering methods are required to be employed. The extended Kalman filter (EKF) which is a widely used nonlinear filtering algorithm often shows limited performance under large initial uncertainty. The feasibility of using a particle filter is investigated, which can improve the performance and reliability of the terrain-based localization.

Nowadays, research on human-robot interaction has been getting increasing attention. In the research field of human-robot interaction, speech signal processing in particular is the source of much interest. In this paper, we report a speaker localization system with six microphones for a humanoid robot called MAHRU from KIST and propose a time delay of arrival (TDOA)-based feature matrix with its algorithm based on the minimum sum of absolute errors (MSAE) for sound source localization. The TDOA-based feature matrix is defined as a simple database matrix calculated from pairs of microphones installed on a humanoid robot. The proposed method, using the TDOA-based feature matrix and its algorithm based on MSAE, effortlessly localizes a sound source without any requirement for calculating approximate nonlinear equations. To verify the solid performance of our speaker localization system for a humanoid robot, we present various experimental results for the speech sources at all directions within 5 m distance and the height divided into three parts.
