  • Abrasion tests of an SBR compound were conducted using four different types of abrasion testers (cut and chip, Lambourn, DIN, and LAT100). The abrasion test results were analyzed in terms of size distributions and morphologies of the wear particles. Most wear particles were larger than 1000 ㎛. The wear particle size distributions tended to decrease as the particle size decreased. Except for the Lambourn abrasion test, the wear particles smaller than 212 ㎛ were rarely generated by the other three abrasion tests, implying that small wear particles were produced through friction by introducing talc powder. Shapes of the wear particles varied depending on the abrasion testers. The wear particles generated from the Lambourn abrasion tester had stick-like shapes. The cut and chip abrasion test showed a clear abrasion pattern, but the DIN abrasion test did not show any specific abrasion pattern. The Lambourn and LAT100 abrasion tests showed irregular abrasion patterns.

  • The abrasion resistances of silica-filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds prepared with and without dicyclopentadiene resin (SBR-R and SBR-0, respectively) were studied using four different abrasion testers, namely cut and chip (CC), Lambourn, DIN, and laboratory abrasion tester (LAT100). The effect of the resin on the abrasion behavior was elucidated by analyzing the morphologies and size distributions of wear particles. All the wear particles had rough surfaces, but those obtained in the Lambourn abrasion test exhibited relatively smooth surfaces. The size distributions of the wear particles showed different trends depending on the abrasion tester and the rubber compound; however, most of the wear particles were larger than 1000 ㎛. The SBR-R sample showed a wide range of particle sizes (from 63 ㎛) in the LAT100 abrasion test and majority of the wear particles were 500-1000 ㎛, whereas the SBR-0 sample had the most distribution of larger than 1000 ㎛. The abrasion rates of SBR-0 sample were lower than those of the SBR-R sample for the CC and LAT100 abrasion tests, but the Lambourn abrasion test result showed the opposite trend. Addition of the resin influenced the abrasion behavior, however the effect varied depending on the type of abrasion tests.

  • The laboratory inspection and analysis of several types of ropes such as edge tensile test, D/d tensile test and abrasion test were carried out in order to investigate the abrasion degradation by external damage and to obtain the fundamental data for measurement against the abrasion. PET ropes were socketed and evaluated under tensile testing. A yarn-on-yarn abrasion test machine has been developed to study the damage and failure associated with rubbing between fiber surfaces. The abrasion test method consists of sliding a length of interwrapped yarn against itself in a reciprocating fashion, either dry or immersed in liquid. It has also been adapted to measure yarn-on-yarn friction. The influence of spin finish on yarn friction and abrasion was investigated extensively. This study indicates that finish has a major effect not only on yarn performance but also on rope performance under the marine environment.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose an experimental method to evaluate the resistance of abrasion about 24 MPa, 27 MPa, and 30 MPa compressive strength. These strength are used in the design and construction of concrete hydraulic structures in Korea. The mixing ratios of the ready mixed concrete strengths were investigated countrywide and set the representative mixture proportion ratios of the nine mixed types of OPC, FA and BFS. After making and curing the test specimens, the underwater abrasion test was performed. ASTM C 1138 International Standard was used to fabricate the test equipment, and the surface abrasion resistance of the specimen was tested using the test equipment. In the case of OPC, the 30% abrasion resistance improvement effect was observed at 72 hours as the water-binder ratio decreased. That was reason the coated cement bond strength of the specimen was strong. In the case of BFS and FA, it was improved by 9.9% and 3.8%, respectively, at 72 hours as the water-binder ratio decreased. It was due to the characteristics of the latent hydraulic and pozzolanic reactions. Generally, the relative abrasion resistance of concrete can be evaluated at 24 hours. However, in case of low strength (under 24 MPa), the surface mortar layer wears much faster at the first 12 hours, so it can be considered to evaluate the relative abrasion loss rate at this point.

  • This study describes a test method for evaluating the ice friction and abrasion performance of polar coatings. The evaluation methods of physical properties of general coatings for ocean-going vessels and polar coatings for ice-going vessels were investigated and their limitations were analyzed. We have also reviewed previous researches related to the development of polar paints and confirmed the necessity of developing test techniques. A flat steel plate was coated with several types of commercial coating, and cold model ice was used to cause ice friction and abrasion events between coated surface and ice. For evaluation of ice friction and abrasion performances, test procedures such as measurement of coating surface roughness, measurement of frictional force using model ice, implementation of ice abrasion and drying of coating surface were developed. The friction and abrasion characteristics of each coating are analyzed and summarized through the change of friction force and roughness data according to the progress of ice abrasion.

  • Ice induced abrasion is known as a critical problem in concrete gravity based offshore structures, which are mainly used in the arctic regions. Although many researches on ice abrasion have been conducted for the last several decades, there still are some difficulties in designing concrete gravity based offshore structures against abrasion problem because there is no standardized method yet due to the uncertain physics involved in. This paper presents an experimental study for the evaluation of concrete abrasion characteristics due to ice friction on concrete surface. For the test, a testing machine capable of abrasion and friction was designed and produced, and standardized procedure was proposed to produce ice specimen used for abrasion test. For the experiment, compressive strength of the ice specimen were explored through a static compression test. Then the friction test between ice specimen and concrete surface was performed and friction coefficients were derived using measured vertical and horizontal forces. Dependency of friction coefficients on some test parameters were studied and discussed as well.

  • The majority of fly ash pipes in thermal power stations use steel pipes. This makes frequent replacement inevitable due to severe abrasion near the hot and curved section of pipes. Recently, there have been efforts to prevent this abrasion with lining techniques using ceramic or basalt on the inner wall of the pipe. This study uses composite and anti-wear material to maximize the anti-abrasion effects on the hot section of the pipe. The thickness of the abrasion layer was determined by the abrasion ratio of material found through the experiment; the thickness of the reinforcement layer was determined by micromechanics. Experiments were conducted on epoxy resins to test for heat and abrasion. Anti-abrasion test using particle impingement was intended to recreate realistic conditions when abrasion occurs within the hot section of an actual pipe. This study analyzes the abrasion ratio obtained from both the specimen experiment and from on-site measurement and provides evidence that a combination of composites and anti-wear agent can be used to create a fly ash pipe that is lower in costs and higher in quality than what is used currently.

  • The specification for selecting railway ballast in France is introduced in this study and the effectiveness of selection for railway ballast is studied for the case of a quarry located in northen France. The quality of railway ballast is, in general, estimated depending on the grain distribution and mainly of the resistance against abrasion. The resistance against abrasion is obtained by both Los Angeles abrasion test and Micro Deval test, which determine the ballast quality suitable whether for high speed railway or classical railway. This study analyzed the correlation between the abrasion index obtained from the abrasion tests for the aggregates sampled at three different stages among ballast production procedure at the quarry. A high correlation is determined between Los Angeles Abrasion index (LA) and Micro Deval index (MDA) and also between abrasion indices of different aggregates. Particularly, this correlation between the abrasion indices allows to estimate the quality of ballast at the final stage from the aggregates at the site in a quarry within the margin of error.
