Incision into bedrock channel is the primary control of landform evolution, but research into bedrock incision process stagnated for long time. Due to the scaling problem of the application of results from flume studies to bedrock channel, there is a strong need to simulate the bedrock incision process with more realistic models. As a part of investigation into controls of bedrock channel incision, three-dimensional changes of rock surface with abrasion was investigated with physical modelling. 18 rock plates were abraded with various sediment particle size and sediment load and abraded surfaces of the plates were scanned with high resolution 3-D scanner. To identify the spatial pattern of erosion of the rock plates, various methods were used. There was no synthetic or holistic method that showed all features of bedrock plate produced by abrasion, so each plate was analyzed using some available methods. Contour maps, shaded relief maps and profiles show that abrasion concentrated on the centre of plate (cross profile) and upstream and downstream edges (longitudinal profile) and eroded area extended inwards. It also found that the cracks and boundaries of forming materials easily eroded than other parts. Changing patterns of surface roughness were investigated with profiles, regression analysis and spectral analysis. Majority of plates showed decrease in small-scale roughness, but it depends on microstructures of the plates rather than general hardness or other factors. SEM inspection results supported this idea.
This study is going to compare the degree of color change which occurs in the following two cases of the factors which cause the color change of extra-staining, one is during glazing by the dental technician, the other is tooth brush abrasion which makes the biggest influence on color change. To compare the degree of color change before and after glazing, a sample was made with vintage incisal porcelain No. 59 OPAL(Shofu Inc, Japan), after that it was painted with three colors of porcelain stainers, then the degree of color was measured with a spectrophometer(Model Chromaview 300, Spectoron Tech Co. Korea) after it had been treated with firing only and glazing after firing 40,000-cycle and 80,000-cycle of tooth brush abrasion test were carried out in order to simulate the brushing effect of 4 years and 8 years by using the abrasion tester. The colors were measured before the test, and after the 40,000-cycle and 80.000-cycle operations and the surfaces were examined by SEM. The results of this study were as follows ; 1. The color change before and after glazing was not great enough to have a clinical significance but the orange color was changed more significantly statistically than the blue and light brown(p<0.05). 2. In the case of the color change of stained porcelain by tooth brushing, carrying out staining and glazing with two-times firings resulted in statically less color change than one firing only(p<0.05). 3. In the case of the difference in the stainer's color, the orange color which has higher chroma was statically more sensitive than the blue color(p<0.05) 4. In the case of the color change after the 80,000-cycle abrasion, all showed color change when there was one firing and the orange stainer showed some color change with clinical significance when firings were done two times.
To test the effects of representative fluoride vanishes-1.23% APF gel and 5% NaF Fluoride Varnish-on the surface structure of pit and fissure sealant, this study classified samples of pit and fissure sealant into five groups: Group I deposited in distilled water for ten minutes, Group II treated with APF gel for one minute, Group III treated with APF gel for four minutes, Group IV treated with Fluoride Varnish for one minute, and Group V treated with Fluoride Varnish for four minutes. An abrasion test was carried out to measure changes in weight, along with observation of the surface structure by using an optical microscope, consequently drawing the following conclusions. 1. The results of the abrasion test using pit and fissure sealant, Concise, showed that Group III had the reduction in weight more increased than Group I and that Group V had less reduction in weight (p<0.05); the results of the abrasion test using Eco-S showed Group III had the reduction in weight more increased than Group I and that Group V had less reduction in weight (p<0.05). 2. The results of observation using an optical microscope showed that application of APF gel made the filler remarkable due to loss of substrate and that Group III treated with APF gel for four minutes had the toughest surface, followed by Group II treated with APF gel for one minute, Group I deposited in distilled water for ten minutes, Group IV treated with Fluoride Varnish for one minute, and Group V treated with Fluoride Varnish for four minutes.
This study was investigated the changes in quality of peeled chestnut according to peeling method, including abrasion and knife, and 3 kinds of storage temperatures. The weight loss rate of peeled chestnut during storage period was observed in all treatment groups, peeling methods showed no difference of the loss. However, the moisture content of peeled chestnut during storage in all treatments showed a tendency to decrease. Moisture content of the abrasion peeled chestnut in all treatments was higher than that of the knife peeled chestnut. In the case of a, b, and ${\Delta}E$ value of peeled chestnut chromaticity increased during storage in all treatments, whereas, L values decreased during storage. But, browning of abrasion peeled chestnut was higher than that of the knife peeled chestnut. The hardness of the abrasion and knife peeled chestnuts were the highest in $-1^{\circ}C$ storage, soluble solid content was decreased with storage time in all treatments, but showed a tendency to increase within 24 days. Palatability and texture of peeled chestnuts decreased in all treatments during storage period, 15 days after storage decreased rapidly. Thus, results showed that peeled chestnuts stored at $4^{\circ}C$ and $2^{\circ}C$ were rapidly decreased in the quality after 15 days, whereas, peeled chestnuts stored at $-1^{\circ}C$ slowly decrease in the fruit quality. It can be recommended that chestnut in vacuum film is good to maintain at $-1^{\circ}C$ storage for 15 days. Also, if we can reduce the browning of abrasion peeled chestnut, we will produce peeled chestnut of high quality.
Transparent, abrasion resistant coatings with 4~13 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thickness were prepared by spin-coating on polycarbonates with organic/inorganic hybrid solutions, followed by UV curing and heat treatment at 12$0^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours. The coating solutions were composed of inorganic phase and organic phase in 0:100, 20:80, 30:70, 50:50, 80:20 wt% ratios, respectively, mixed with photoinitiator, senaitizer and surfactant. The inorganic phase was formed by sol-gel reaction of TEOS and silane coupling agent MPTMS in 1 : 2 or 2 : 1 molar ratios, the organic phase consisted of difunctional urethane acrylate oligomeric resin, multifunctional acrylate TMPTA and HDDA in 4 : 3 : 3 wt% ratio. The coating systems were investigated by FT-IR, $^{29}$ Si-NMR spectra. In addition, TGA/DSC for thermal analysis and SEM, AFM observation for coated surface were examined. Gererally, the homogeneity of phases, the surface smoothness of coating and abrasion resistance were improved with the higher content of inorganic component. Namely, coating system with below 10 $\AA$ surface roughness and T$_{g}$ of 15$0^{\circ}C$ showed only 10% decrease in light transmittance after abrasion test, whereas uncoated polycarbonate substrate exhibited 46% decrease..
In this study, we attempted to reduce CO2 generated during manufacturing by replacing limestone (CaCO3), a carbonate mineral used to produce cement clinker, with a decarbonated raw material to which CO2 is not bound. The raw material for decarbonization was cement paste attached to waste concrete, among various industrial by-products. Waste concrete has cement paste adhered to the aggregate, which cannot be separated efficiently by general crushing and grinding methods. Peeling and grinding methods effectively remove only the cement paste without damaging the original aggregate. The abrasion time, steel ball type, and steel ball ratio were selected as effective factors for Abrasion. An optimal abrasion experiment was conducted to produce waste concrete fine powder containing decarbonated CaO as a cement clinker raw material through an experimental design method. The experiment revealed that the optimal conditions for producing waste concrete fine powder were an abrasion time of 7 minutes, a steel ball size for pulverization of 8 mm, and a steel ball ratio for pulverization of 0.6.
Background: With the advent of thoracoscopy, there has been increasing interest in less invasive surgical bullectomy and pleurodesis. The recurrence rate, however, has been reported higher in surgery with thoracoscopy than with open thoracotomy and it is thought to be caused by inappropriate mechanical pleurodesis during thoracoscopic surgery. Materials and methods: We compared the short-term recurrence rates according to the intensities of pleural abrasion in 62 patients who underwent VATS for treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax from April 1996 to August 1997. The patients were divided into 2 groups: group A(n=32) included patients who received relatively weak pleural abrasion using Endo-forcep instrument for grasping the gauze, and group B(n=30) received strong pleural abrasion using conventional instrument wrapped tightly with gauze. Each intensity of pleural abrasion allowed petechia on the parietal pleura in group A, and some tearing and bleeding in group B. Results: Indications for operation, sex distribution, and age were comparable in both groups. There were no differences in chest tube indwelling time(3.78±3.35 vs 3.80±2.49 days), hospital stay(4.72±1.87 vs 4.67±2.20 days), and the amount and duration of analgesics required postoperatively. Persistent air-leak more than 7 days after surgery occurred in 4/32(12.5%) and 2/30(6.7%) in group A and B, respectively. No bleeding-related complication occured. Pneumothorax recurred 12.5%(4/32) and 0%(0/30) of patients at a mean follow-up of 9.7 and 9.6 months in group A and B, respectively, and it was statistically significant(p<0.05). Conclusions: Proper intensity of pleural abrasion is very important factor to reduce recurrence after VATS for spontaneous pneumothorax. During short-term follow-upafter surgery, we could achieve excellent result in reducing recurrence rate with VATS and strong pleural abrasion which is comparable to thoracotomy.
This study will evaluate the effectiveness of various pretreatments when fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) post is bonded to endodontically treated tooth with resin cement. Materials and methods: Canal shaping of FRC post (DT Light post, Size 3, Bisco Inc., Schaumburg, IL, USA) was performed on endodontically treated premolars at 1.5 cm from CEJ. Samples were divided into 6 groups of surface treatment after conventional washing and drying to the canal. Total of 24 FRC posts were randomly divided into 6 groups of surface treatment as follows: Group C: control - no surface treatment, Group A: airborne-particle abrasion (Cojet sand, 3M ESPE), Group S: silanization (Bis-silane, Bisco Inc.), Group M: universal primer (Monobond-plus primer, Ivoclar Vivadent Inc.), Group AS: silanization after airborne-particle abrasion, Group AM: universal primer treatment after airborne-particle abrasion. Pretreated fiber posts were cemented with resin-based luting material and photo-polymerized and cut to the thickness of 1 mm. Push-out test using a universal testing machine was performed. Bonding failure strength of post dislodgement was measured and the type of bonding failure was classified. Data were analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis test and multiple comparison groups were performed using Tukey HSD value of rank test (${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: Group AS showed significantly highest bonding strength. Group S, group AM, group A, and group M showed lower bonding strength in order. The control group showed the lowest bonding strength. Conclusion: Surface treatment with silane showed to be the most effective of the surface pretreatment methods for cementation of FRC post. Surface treatment with universal primer showed no significant difference compared with no surface treatment group as for bonding strength.

The exposed aggregate PCC(EAP) pavements have been successfully used in Europe and Japan as low-noise pavements. Coarse aggregate are exposed on the pavement surface texture of EAP by removing mortar of surface. The pavement surface texture should maintain not only low-noise characteristic but also adequate skid resistance level during the performance period. Skid resistance decreased with wearing and polishing of tire and pavement surface due to the repetition of tire-pavement contact. Since the tires mainly contact the exposed coarse aggregate, the shape and rock type of coarse aggregate significantly influence wearing and polishing of EAP pavements. The test for resistance to abrasion coarse aggregate by use of the Los Angeles machine(KS F 2508) and the method of test for resistance to abrasion coarse aggregate by use of the Accelerated Polishing Machine(ASTM D 3319-90) are generally used to evaluate polishing characteristics of aggregate. In this study, polishing of coarse aggregate of different five rock types were evaluated by KS F 2508(LA abrasion test) and ASTM D 3319-90(PSV method). The results of LA abrasion test and PSV method were contrary to each other. Since LA abrasion test is estimated the quantity of abrasion by the impact of aggregate, it may not be adequate to evaluate the polishing of aggregate by the repetition of tire. In the case of PSV method, the resistance of polishing is estimated the skid resistance variation of polished aggregate after repetition of tire. The PSV method is adequate for the evaluation on polishing of coarse aggregate. From the test results of PSV method, it was founded that rock type, specific gravity, coarse aggregate angularity, flat or elongated particles in coarse aggregate are significant to the resistance characteristic of coarse aggregate.
