Various rates of 2,4-D were sprayed on 2 and 3 year old ginseng plants as foliar spray to define the critical concentration. No apparent plant injury was noticable for those ginseng plants when application concentration of 2,4-D doubled the recommended dosage (70 ml/10a). Neither abnormal foliar change occurred nor any inhibition in leaf and stem growth was resulted for the plants treated with 2,4-D concentrated two times of the recommended dosage. When the rates of 2,4-D application were increased greater than this level, injury ratings increased linearly with the rates of 2,4-D application and plant you was inhibited. Ethylene gas was not produced from the ginseng plant treated with 2 times concentrated 2,4-D, however the ginseng plants produced 0.03 to 0.09 ppm ethylene gas when the rate of application were increased 3 and 4 times, respectively. On the other hand the soybean treated with the recommended amount of 21-D produced ethylene gas of 10-20 times higher compared with ginseng plants and died. Photosynthesis ability of the ginseng leaf was significantly decreased by 2,4-D foliar application but it was recovered 4 weeks after 2,4-D foliar treatment. The herbicide 2,4-D was applicated to 2,3 and 4 years old ginseng plants as foliar spray with the rates of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 times of the recommended dosage to define the effects of 2,4-D on the plant growth and root yield of the ginseng. There were no significant differences in the leaf and stem growth between untreated and 2,4-D treated plant. Berry maturing of 3 and 4 year old ginseng was not influenced by 2,4-D. The root weight of 4 years old ginseng plant was not reduced by application of 2,4-D concenrated 2 times of the recommended dosage, Application time of the herbicide 2,4-D had no effects on the leaf or stem growth of 2,3 and 4 year old year old ginseng plants. When the ginseng seedling was treated with 2,4-D, detrimental phenomena as stem bending and docoration of seedling leaf margin occurred, but stem bending was recovered in a few day s. Keywords Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer, 2,4-D , herbicide.

The 500 MW Korean standard coal-fired power plant is the largest standardized power plant in Korea and has played a pivotal role in domestic power generation for over 20 years. In addition to the aging degradation due to long term operation, the probability of failure of power generation facilities is increasing due to frequent startup and stop caused by the lower utilization rate due to air pollution problem caused by coal-fired power plants. Among them, steam piping plays an important role in transferring high-temperature & pressure steam produced in a boiler to turbine for power generation. In recent years, failure of steam piping of large coal-fired power plant has frequently occurred. Therefore, in this study, failure analysis of high pressure piping weld was conducted. We identify the damage caused by high stress due to abnormal supporting structure of the piping and suggest improved supporting structure to eliminate high stress through microstructure analysis and piping stress analysis to prevent the occurrence of the similar failure of other power plant in the case of repetitive damage to the main steam piping system of the 500 MW Korean standard coal-fired power plant.
Generally, nitrogen (N) fertilization higher than the recommended dose is applied during vegetable cultivation for increasing in productivity. However, excessive N application rate beyond plant requirement could cause adverse environmental impact such as nitrate leaching and nitrous oxide emission. In this experiment, the impacts of N fertilization was studied on nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) emission to standardize the optimum fertilization level for minimizing of $N_2O$ emission as well as most of the crop productivity. Herein, we assessed the $N_2O$ emission in the flat upland soil which was cultivated with different N application rates on red pepper for 3 years (2010~2012). $N_2O$ emission was measured in chemical N fertilizer amounts 0 (N 0), 95 (N 0.5), 190 (N 1.0), $380(N_2.0)kgha^{-1}$ by using the abnormal shape chamber closed repeating three times. In average for 3 years, the total $N_2O$ emissions of each treatment in field of soybean were 2.110 (N 0), 3.165 (N 0.5), 5.039 (N 1.0), and $7.228(N_2.0)kgN_2Oha^{-1}yr^{-1}$, respectively. And then the primary regression between nitrogen fertilizer amount and the total $N_2O$ emission was showed as y = 0.0138x + 2.0942 ($r^2=0.9885$), and an average of the emission factor was $EF_1$ 0.0148(0.0118~0.0191) $N_2O-NkgN^{-1}kg^{-1}$ from 2010 to 2012. The result was a little higher than the emission default of the IPCC 1996 Guideline ($EF_1$ 0.0125) when the results are converted into $N_2O$ emission factor.
This study was performed to evaluate the effect of hemoglobin (Hb) on bone mineral density (BMD) in university students by performing a quantitative analysis. The subjects included healthy university students aged 20 to 30 years. Although osteoporosis has traditionally been considered as a disease of aging women, it is becoming an increasingly concerning male health problem. Diagnosis of osteoporosis is calculated with a quantitative assessment of BMD. Laboratory blood and urine tests are mainly used with low BMD or fragility fractures to identify any possible causes of bone metabolism disorders. In this study, there was no difference in BMD according to gender. The average red blood cell (RBC), Hb, and Hematocrit (HCT) were significantly higher in males (p<0.01). The correlation between lumbar spine, skeletal muscle mass (SMM), and basal metabolic rate (BMR) was statistically significant (p<0.01). Hb showed a 51.7% statistical influence on BMD by multiple regression analysis. These findings are useful to understand the relationship between BMD and Hb; lower Hb level is associated with lower BMD. The Hb level was the strongest predictor of abnormal BMD. In conclusion, this study showed that a low Hb value was significantly correlated with low bone mass, suggesting that a low Hb value is a risk factor for changes in bone turnover that leads to a decrease bone density.
Sediment exchange in river has been affected by artificial changes such as dredging and abnormal climate changes like intense rainfall. Over last decades in Korea, there were many constructions, restoration or rehabilitation in rivers. Therefore, deposition and erosion become more actively occurred than before, which may threaten the river safety such as flood defense. For safety's sake, the dredging of river bed, which is considered as the most typical measure, has been increased to extend hydraulic conveyance compared with previous conditions. However, since it might change the sediment mechanism, there would be another risk at which unexpected side effects such as headward erosion could be occurred. Particularly, sedimentation at abrupt expansion region is able to lead to hydraulic characteristics like water elevation in the upstream region in the beginning of dredging, which, however, has been barely studied in this field. Therefore in this study, the relationship between sediment mechanism at dredging section and hydraulic characteristics in upstream region were presented through numerical simulations in the idealized abruptly widen channel using Delft3D. The ideal channel of 2,000 m length with each side angle of 45 degrees at abruptly widen expansion region was employed to consider the sediment angle of repose. The sensitivity analysis was performed on the dimensionless factors consisted of upstream and downstream depths($h_u$, $h_d$), width($w_u$, $w_d$), water level(H), flow rate(Q) and discharge of sediment($Q_s$). And the sedimentation amount at dredging and the upstream hydraulic characteristics were investigated through that analysis. It showed that $h_d/h_u$, $H/h_u$ and $w_d/w_u$ were more influential in sequence of effect on sedimentation amount, while $h_d/h_u$, $w_d/w_u$ and $H/h_u$ on upstream region. It means that $h_d/h_u$ was revealed as the most significant factors on sedimentation, also it would most highly affect the rising of water level upstream.

A statistical analysis on the cardiothoracic ratio in insurance medicine was carried out for 5,200 insured persons who were medically examined including photofluorography of the chest at the Honam medical department, Dong Bang life insurance Company, Ltd from November, 1979 to August, 1984. The results were as follows: 1. The mean value of the cardiothoracic ratio in all of the insured was $44.2{\pm}4.3%$. The mean value of the cardiothoracic ratio was $43.1{\pm}4.1%$ in all males and $45.2{\pm}4.2%$ in all females, and the difference of the values between males and females showed statistical significance(P<0.001). In each age group, the mean value of the cardiothoracic ratios of female was higher than that of male without exception and the difference of the values between males and females showed statistical significance(P<0.001). The mean value of the cardiothoracic ratio showed gradual increase with age from the second to sixth decade in male(P<0.05 or 0.001 after fourth decade) and from the second to seventh decade in female(P<0.05 or 0.001 from the second to sixth decade). 2. Correlation between both sexes and among age groups relating to the cardiothoracic ratios of the insureds seen to be a physiological phenomenon of the cardiac size and should be considered on the rating of the cardiothoracic ratio. Based on the correlation above mentioned and an author's assumption that the incidence of normal and abnormal cardiothoracic ratios in each age group would show the same rate in male and female, author prepared a modified rating table from the existing table; in male group the existing rating table is used and in female group the ratings of 0, 30-50, 50-100 and 100-D are to calculate by the cardiothoracic ratio of 51%or under, 52-56%, 57-61% and 62% or over respectively in the age group below 39, by the cardiothoracic ratio of 52% or under, 53-57%, 58%-62% and 63% or over respectively in the age group of 40-49, by the cardiothoracic ratio of 53% or under, 54-58%, 59-63% and 64% or over respectively in the age group over 60. 3. The relative frequency distribution polygons of the cardiothoracic ratio of both sexes drawn in a pair on one coordinate plane revealed lying in juxtaposition each other horizontally and showed the shifting of females polygon to male's one toward the direction of greater value of the cardiothoracic ratio at a short distance which increased gradually with age. 4. The minimum cardiothoracic ratio was 31.2% and the maximum cardiothoracic ratio was 63.6% in all of the insured. 5. In each age group, no significant sex difference was found in the relative frequency distribution of ratings by the cardiothoracic ratios of 5,200 insureds by using the rating table modified by author, while significant sex difference was found by using the existing rating table.
Radiation proctitis is a common complication after radiotherapy for pelvic malignant tumors. This study was conducted to assess the efficacy of novel almagate enemas in hemorrhagic chronic radiation proctitis (CRP) and evaluate risk factors related to rectal deep ulcer or fistula secondary to CRP. All patients underwent a colonoscopy to confirm the diagnosis of CRP and symptoms were graded. Typical endoscopic and pathological images, risk factors, and quality of life were also recorded. A total of 59 patients were enrolled. Gynecological cancers composed 93.1% of the primary malignancies. Complete or obvious reduction of bleeding was observed in 90% (53/59) patients after almagate enema. The mean score of bleeding improved from 2.17 to 0.83 (P<0.001) after the enemas. The mean response time was 12 days. No adverse effects were found. Moreover, long-term successful rate in controlling bleeding was 69% and the quality of life was dramatically improved (P=0.001). The efficacy was equivalent to rectal sucralfate, but the almagate with its antacid properties acted more rapidly than sucralfate. Furthermore, we firstly found that moderate to severe anemia was the risk factor of CRP patients who developed rectal deep ulcer or fistulas (P= 0.015). We also found abnormal hyaline-like thick wall vessels, which revealed endarteritis obliterans and the fibrosis underlying this disease. These findings indicate that almagate enema is a novel effective, rapid and well-tolerated method for hemorrhagic CRP. Moderate to severe anemia is a risk factor for deep ulceration or fistula.
Objectives: In this study, we investigated the 4-week repeated-dose oral toxicity of gami-jakyak gamcho buja decoction (Mecasin) to develop safe treatments. Methods: In order to investigate the 4-week oral toxicity of Mecasin, we administered Mecasin orally to rats. Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were divided into four groups of five male and five female animals per group: group 1 being the control group and groups 2, 3, and 4 being the experimental groups. Doses of Mecasin of 500, 1,000, and 2,000 mg/kg of body weight were administered to the experimental groups, and a dose of normal saline solution of 10 mL/kg was administered to the control group. We examined the survival rate, weight, clinical signs, and gross findings for four weeks. This study was conducted under the approval of the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee. Results: No deaths occurred in any of the four groups. No significant changes in weights or food consumption between the control group and the experimental groups were observed. Serum biochemistry revealed that some groups showed significant decrease in inorganic phosphorus (IP) (P < 0.05). During necropsy on the rats, one abnormal macroscopic feature, a slight loss of fur, was observed in the mid dosage (1,000 mg/kg) male group. No abnormalities were observed in any other rats. In histopathological findings, the tubular basophilia and cast of the kidney and extramedullary hematopoiesis of the spleen were found. However, those changes were minimal and had occurred naturally or sporadically. No other organ abnormalities were observed. Conclusion: During this 4-week, repeated, oral toxicity test of Mecasin in SD rats, no toxicity changes due to Mecasin were observed in any of the male or the female rats in the high dosage group. Thus, we suggest that the doses in a 13-week, repeated test should be 0, 500, 1,000, and 2,000 mg/kg respectively.
This study was conducted to develop an intrauterine inseminator (IUI) to deposit of frozen semen into uterus and to evaluate the results obtained after artificial insemination by IUI. Two Japanese spitzs (2 to 4 years of age) were used as semen donors. Semen was collected by manual masturbation into sterile glass collection tubes and separated into 3 fractions with only the sperm-rich fractions retained for further examination. Sperm motility >70%, sperm concentration of 200 to $400{\times}10^6 cells/ml$$\times$g for 5 min and poured out the suspended solution, and then diluted with 2 ml Tris-buffer which was consisted of 2.4 g Tris, 1.4 g citric acid, 0.8 g glucose, 0.1 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml streptomycin, 100 IU/ml penicillin, 20 ml egg yolk to 100 ml mili-Q water (Ext I) or supplemented with 8 ml glycerol and 1 ml Equex STM paste to 100 rnl (Ext II). The diluted semen was cooled to 5$^{\circ}C$ in cold room, where the temperature in the sample reached 5$^{\circ}C$. Two h after beginning the cooling procedure, 2 ml of Ext II, also at 5$^{\circ}C$, was added and mixed by gently reversing the tubes several times during 1 h. The final sperm concentration for freezing was approximately $50{\times}10^6 cells/ml$. After equilibration, the semen was loaded into 0.5 ml straw and frozen on the liquid nitrogen vapour in styrofoam box. The straws were thawed at 7$0^{\circ}C$ for precisely 6 sec. After thawing of each straw, the frozen semen can survived over 50% motility. All the females were inseminated twice with 1 ml of $25{\times}10^6 cells/ml$
In order to compare the biological properties of benfuresate and cinosulfuron as herbicides for the chemical control of Eleocharis kuroguwai, some experiments were conducted at greenhouse and field conditions in 1993. Benfuresate and cinosufuron moved to 2cm and 6cm deep in paddy soil and inhibited the growth of E. kuroguwai. Benfuresate was absorbed into the roots of E. kuroguwai. whereas cinosulfuron was absorbed into not only the roots and shoots but also the mesocotyls. After the emergence was inhibited by the soil application of herbicides, the percentage of regrowing numbers was higher at cinosulfuron than at benfuresate, whereas the growth rate was higher at benfuresate on the contrary. Benfuresate brought about complete death of buds as a killing type, but cinosulfuron produced lots of abnormal shoots as an inhibiting type. Benfuresate was able to apply on soil surface from the preemergence to the early stage of 2cm high, but cinosulfuron was able to use from the preemergence to the stage of 15cm high. The foliar application of cinosulfuron showed a good control effect, but it induced a severe phytotoxicity to rice. A good control effect of Benfuresate/bensulfuron GR lowered at the late stage, but that of cinosulfuron/mefenacet/dymron GR at the early stage maintained until the late stage of 65 days after transplanting.
