Motion Change of the Trunk and Upper Extremity Segment to Putting the Wrist Support on Throwing in Bowling (볼링 투구 동작 시 손목 지지대 착용에 따른 몸통과 상지 분절의 움직임 변화)

  • This study was to analysis three dimension angle of the upper extremity segment and trunk to putting the protector in women bowlers. For this study, the subjects selected 4 players of national and university team. All subjects putted in the same wrist support to satisfy the experiment conditions. To get three dimensions position coordination of swing motion used for 6 ProReflex MCU 240 camera produced by Qualisys. After position coordination calculation, Three dimension angle of the trunk and the upper extremity segment calculated for Matlab 6.5. the result is following; In the trunk motion, there were little differences among the subjects in a flexion and extension change. There were a lot of differences in motion change of the abduction-adduction and internal-external rotation, but the motion types translated to the adduction-abduction-adduction and from the internal rotation toward the external rotation. In the upper arm segment the Flexion and extension showed a consistent motion in the down swing and up swing phase. And the motion change of abduction-adduction and pronation-supination showed a abduction-adduction-abduction and pronation-supination change during swing phase. In the forearm segment changes, it showed a lot of differences among the subjects and a similar change with the upper arm segment. Especially, the hand segment showed a supination motion from the backswing apex to release phase, but for increasing a rotation velocity of ball, the hand segment translated toward pronation in follow throw phase.

Effect of Contralateral Hip Adduction on Muscle Thicknesses of Lumbar Stabilizers and Pelvic Lateral Tilting During Hip Abduction in Side-lying (옆으로 누운 자세에서 고관절 외전시 반대 측 고관절 내전이 요추안정화 근육 두께와 골반 외측 경사에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of contralateral hip adduction (CHA) on thickness of lumbar stabilizers during hip abduction in side-lying. Twenty healthy subjects without back pain were recruited for this study. The thickness of transverse abdominis (TrA), internal oblique (IO) and quadratus lumborum (QL) were measured by ultrasonography. Pelvic lateral tilting motion was measured using a three-dimensional motion analysis system. Measurements were performed at rest position (RP), $35^{\circ}$preferred hip abduction (PHA) and $35^{\circ}$abduction with $10^{\circ}$contralateral hip adduction (CHA) in side-lying at the end of expiration. During the measurements, subjects were asked to maintain steady trunk alignment without hand support. Thickness of TrA and IO was significantly greater in CHA than in PHA and RP conditions. There was no significant difference in thickness of TrA and IO between PHA and RP conditions. Medio-lateral (M-L) thickness of QL was not significant between PHA and CHA conditions. Anterio-posterior (A-P) thickness of QL in PHA and CHA significantly decreased compared to RP condition. Angle of pelvic lateral tilting was significantly decreased in CHA compared to PHA condition. In conclusion, CHA can be recommended for increasing trunk stability without compensatory pelvic motion during hip abduction exercise in side-lying.

Effects of Prosthetic Mass Distribution on Musculoskeletal System during Amputee Gait (의지 보행시 의지 무게 분포가 근골격계에 미치는 영향)

  • The optimized prosthetic mass distribution was a controversial problem in the previous studies because they are not supported by empirical evidence. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of prosthetic mass properties by modeling musculoskeletal system, based on the gait analysis data from two above-knee amputees. The joint torque at hip joint was calculated using inverse dynamic analysis as the mass was changed in knee and foot prosthetic components with the same joint kinematics. The results showed that the peak flexion and abduction torque at the hip joint were 5 Nm and 15 Nm when the mass of the knee component was increased, greater than the peak flexion and abduction torque of the control group at the hip joint, respectively. On the other hand, when the mass of the foot component was increased, the peak flexion and abduction torque at the hip joint were 20 Nm and 15 Nm, greater than the peak flexion and abduction torque of the control, respectively. The hip flexion torque was 4.71-fold greater and 7.92-fold greater than the hip abduction torque for the knee mass increase and the foot mass increase on the average, respectively. Therefore, we could conclude that the effect of foot mass increase was more sensitive than that of knee mass increase for the hip flexion torque. On the contrary, the mass properties of the knee and foot components were not sensitive for the hip abduction torque. In addition, optimized prosthetic mass and appropriate mass distributions were needed to promote efficiency of rehabilitation therapy with consideration of musculoskeletal systems of amputees.

The Effects of Vibration and Side-lying Hip Abduction on Pain, Disability, Strength and Balance in Individuals with Low Back Pain (진동을 동반한 옆교각 운동이 요통 성인의 통증, 기능장애, 근력, 균형에 미치는 영향)

  • PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the effects of side-lying hip abduction exercise with and without vibration on pain, disability, strength and balance in individuals with low back pain. METHODS: 30 participants enrolled in this study were randomly assigned to an experimental group (EG, n=15) for side-lying hip abduction with vibration and a control group (CG, n=15) for side-lying hip abduction without vibration. Both groups were treated 3 times per week for 4 weeks. Pain (Numeric Rating Scale), disability (Korean Oswestry Disability Index), hip abductor muscle strength, and static balance were measured in both groups before and after the program. Results were analyzed using paired t-test for comparing the difference within the group and independent t-test for comparing the difference between two groups. RESULTS: Compared to the CG, the EG showed significantly greater reductions in pain and disability (p<.05). There was a significant difference in all balance categories of both the painful and non-painful sides within the EG (p<.05). Balance showed a significant decrease except the envelope area (ENV) on the non-painful side within the CG (p<.05). There was a significant increase in all balance categories except ENV of non-painful side between the two groups (p<.05). Balance increased on both the painful and non-painful sides in the EG. Balance improved on the painful side in the CG, but significantly decreased on the non-painful side (p<.05). CONCLUSION: Side-lying hip abduction exercise with vibration is considered an effective treatment for pain, disability and balance in individuals with low back pain.

In Vivo Three-Dimensional Evaluation of the Functional Length of Glenohumeral Ligaments

  • Glenohumeral ligaments play an important role in stabilizing the shoulder. However, it is impossible to know how they function in vivo during shoulder motion. To help elucidate this stabilizing role, we conducted in vivo three-dimensional kinematics of the normal shoulder joint using a markerless bone-registration technique. Magnetic resonance images of 14 shoulder joints of 7 healthy volunteers were acquired for 7 isometric abduction positions between $0^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$. We then calculated three-dimensional shortest paths between the origin and insertion of each ligament based on anatomical study in each abduction position. At $0^{\circ}$ of abduction, the posterior band of the coracohumeral ligament displayed the maximum length. At $30^{\circ}$ of abduction, the superior glenohumeral ligament displayed the maximum length. At $60^{\circ}$ of abduction, the anterior band of the coracohumeral ligament and the middle glenohumeral ligament displayed the maximum length. At $120^{\circ}$ of abduction, the anterior band of the inferior glenohumeral ligament displayed the maximum length. We think that the maximum length of these results is an important influence on the function of the soft tissue stabilizer.

The Effects of the Abduction Viewpoint on Science Teachers' Thoughts Related to Hypotheses and Laws in Ninth Grade 'Construction of Matter' and 'Rules of Matter Change' Chapters (중학교 3학년 '물질의 구성' 및 '물질 변화에서의 규칙성' 단원의 가설과 법칙에 대한 귀추적 관점이 과학 교사들의 사고에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate science teachers' thoughts about hypotheses and rules related to the contents of ninth grade 'Construction of Matter' and 'Rules of Matter Change' chapters. The changes of their thoughts through experience of the abduction viewpoint were also analyzed. Twenty-two science teachers in the masters course took lessons and discussions related to the abduction viewpoint in the course of three weeks. The changes in thought of four teachers selected among them were investigated through individual interviews and their reports. From the investigation, it was found that the two teachers who had not recognized the problems of textbook content order could distinguish rules and hypotheses after the lessons and discussions. The two teachers who had recognized the problems before the lessons gained the abduction viewpoint through the lessons. They also recognized new opinions related to teaching styles for students and the meaning of the abduction viewpoint on education.

Relationship Between the Number of Hip Abduction Performance With Contralateral Adduction in Side-lying and the Lateral Pelvic Shift Distance During One-leg Lifting

  • Background: The gluteus medius (Gmed) plays a critical role in maintaining frontal plane stability of the pelvis during functional activities, such as one-leg lifting. Side-lying hip abduction (SHA) has been used as a dynamic test to evaluate Gmed function. However, the abduction force of the lower leg against the floor is not controlled during SHA. Therefore, hip abduction performance with contralateral adduction in the side-lying position (HAPCA) can be proposed as an alternative method to assess performance of hip abduction. If the number of HAPCA is related to the lateral pelvic shift distance, a new quantitative measurement for hip abductor function may be presented. Objects: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the number of successful HAPCA and the lateral pelvic shift distance during one-leg lifting. Methods: Thirty healthy participants were recruited, and lateral pelvic shift distance was measured during one-leg lifting test using two-dimensional analysis. The number of successful HAPCA was counted when participants touched both target bars at the beat of a metronome. Results: There was a negative correlation between the number of HAPCA and lateral pelvic shift distance during one-leg lifting (r = -0.630, p < 0.05). The number of HAPCA accounted for 39.7% of the variance in the lateral pelvic shift distance during one-leg lifting (F = 18.454, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The number of successful HAPCA is significantly correlated with lateral pelvic shift distance during one-leg lifting. This finding suggests that HAPCA can be proposed as a new measurement for hip abductor performance and more research is needed on its relationship with hip abductor strength.

Exploring the Implications of Peirce's Abduction in Science Education by Theoretical Investigation (Peirce의 귀추법에 관한 이론적 고찰을 통한 과학교육적 함의 탐색)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of abduction suggested by C. S. Peirce, and to discuss its implications in science education. Peirce's abduction is the logic of generating hypothesis. Abduction is a kind of logical inference, which colligates general rule and the observed result, and then it makes us judge the observed result as a case of the general rule on the basis of their resemblance. The process of abduction is also the logic of inquiry. In a Peirce's view, inquiry is a struggle for escaping from the condition of 'doubt' and to 'belief the nature of which is the establishment of habits. Because what habit an object has is its whole meaning, in his views, the fixation of belief is the way of attaining the truth related to it. The beliefs of individuals, however, are always fallible. So, to attain a truth, we need the terminal opinion of community of inquiry that could conduct infinite inquiry. These characteristics of Peirce's abduction give suggestions in science education as follows; firstly, hypothesis generating which transforms the condition of 'doubt' into the 'belief by considering practical effects should be highlighted, secondly, logical inference which makes us judge the observed result as a case of the general rule on the basis of resemblance should be highlighted, and thirdly, communities of inquiry which stand on the view of modest realism should be intended toward. These results could be expected in playing a role in critical discussion on science education relating to abduction.

Development and Application of Learning Materials for the Law of Planetary Motion using the Kepler's Abductive Reasoning (행성운동법칙에 관한 케플러의 귀추적 사고를 도입한 학습자료의 개발 및 적용)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop learning materials based on the Kepler's abductive reasoning and to identify high school students' rule-inferring strategies on the law of planetary motion. The learning materials including the concepts of solar magnetic field, conservation of figure skater's angular momentum and Kepler's polyhedral theory were developed and the questions about Kepler's 2nd and 3rd law of planetary motion were also created. The participants were 79science high school students and 83general high school students. The patterns and properties of their abductive inference were analyzed. The findings revealed that the students showed 'incomplete analogy abduction', 'analogy abduction' and 'reconstruction' to generate the hypotheses concerning the Mars' motion related to the solar magnetic field. There were more general high school students who showed the incomplete analogy abduction than science high school students. On the other hand, there were more science high school students who showed the analogy abduction and reconstruction strategy than general high school students. Also, they showed 'incomplete analogy abduction', 'analogy abduction' and 'model construction and manipulation' to generate the hypotheses concerning Kepler's second law. A number of general high school students showed the incomplete analogy. It is suggested that because the analogy of figure skater cause the students' alternative framework to use, more detailed demonstration is necessary in class. In addition, students combined Kepler's polyhedral theory with their prior knowledge to infer Kepler's third law.

Effect of a Intentional Scapular Abduction on the Sit-and-Reach Test (의도적인 견갑골 외전이 Sit-and-Reach Test에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose : This study was done to examine the actual effect of the scapular position in these flexibility tests. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences between the measurement of SRT(Sit-and-Reach Test) without intentional abduction of the scapular (pre-test) and with intentional abduction of the scapular (post-test). The hypothesis is: 1. There is no differences in the SRT result of the pre-test and the post-test. 2. There is no differences in the HJA(Hip Joint Angle) result of the pre-test and the post-test. 3. There is no differences in the Spine Motion Test(SMT) result of the pre-test and the post-test. Method : The total 60 people (30 men, 30 women) were participated in this study. In the pre-test, the subjects were asked to sit on the examination table and try the SRT motion; and then the HJA, SRT and the SMT numerical values were taken. In the post-test. the subjects were instructed to intentionally bring the scapula outward from the midline; and the HJA, SRT and the SMT numerical values were taken. Result : In the pre-test. the SRT result averaged 34.17cm. and in the post-test. the SRT result averaged 36.68cm. The difference was about 2.81cm which showed a significant mean statistically (p<0.01). The measurement increased by 8.22%. The HJA was $85.9^{\circ}$ in pre-test, and it was $85.5^{\circ}$ in post-test. giving the $0.4^{\circ}$ differences. Therefore, it didn't have a statistical mean (p>0.05). The SMT value was 69.56cm in the pre-test. and it was 69.28cm in the post-test, about 0.28cm decreased. Therefore, it didn't have a statistical mean (p>0.05). SRT values and HJA values were correlated (p<0.01). SMT values and SRT values (p<0.01), and SMT values and HJA values(p<0.05) were each in counter correlation. Conclusion : The result of the SRT without intentional scapular abduction (34.17cm) and with intentional scapular abduction (36.68cm) showed a significant increase about 8.22% (p<0.01). In SRT, the effect of the intentional scapular abduction on SMT showed no significant means, the pretest value being 69.56cm and the post-test value being 69.28cm (p>0.05).
