  • In this study we have performed ab initio computer simulations to investigate the conformational characteristics of the tetraethyl (1) and triethyl ester (2) of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene. The structures of different conformational isomers for each compound have been optimized using ab initio RHF/6-31G methods. After optimization, B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) single point calculations of the final structures are done to include the effect of electron correlation and the basis set with diffuse function and polarization function. Relative stability of tetraethyl ester (1) of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene is in following order: cone (most stable) > partial cone > 1,3- alternate > 1,2-alternate isomer. Relative stability of triethyl ester (2) of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene is in following order: cone (most stable) > 2-partial cone > 1-partial cone > 3-partial cone ~ 1,3-alternate ~ 1,2- alternate isomer.

  • A 'minimally complex problem set' for ab initio protein Structure prediction has been proposed. As well as consisting of non-redundant and crystallographically determined high-resolution protein structures, without disulphide bonds, modified residues, unusual connectivities and heteromolecules, it is more importantly a collection of protein structures. with a high probability of being the same in the crystal form as in solution. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt at this kind of dataset. Considering the lattice constraint in crystals, and the possible flexibility in solution of crystallographically determined protein structures, our dataset is thought to be the safest starting points for an ab initio protein structure prediction study.

  • Cobalt subtitution on NiSi is investigated by using an ab-initio calculation. Firstly, a relaxed NiSi structure is calculated and the calculated lattice parameters are compared with experimentally determined lattice parameters. The calculated values are smaller than the experimental values by about 2%. As the calculation is based on 0 K, and the experimental measurement is performed at room temperature, those values are in good agreement. Next, a Co atom substitutes a Ni and Si site, respectively, to evaluate the preferable site between them. Co prefers Ni site to Si site. The calculated total energy also indicates that the Co substitution to Ni site stabilizes the NiSi structure. Therefore, the thermal stability of NiSi with Co addition can be achieved by the structure stabilization of NiSi by Co substitution into Ni site of NiSi.

  • Effect of Pd addition on crystal structures of two nickel silicides, NiSi and $NiSi_2$, is investigated by using an ab initio calculation. A Pd atom substitutes a Ni and Si site, respectively, to evaluate the preferable site between them. Pd prefers Ni site to Si site in NiSi, while it prefers Si site to Ni site in $NiSi_2$. The calculated total energy also indicates that the Pd substitution to Si site stabilizes the $NiSi_2$ structure. This calculated data matches well with the experimental data obtained from Atom probe.

  • In this study we have performed ab initio computer simulations to investigate the conformational characteristics of the tetramethoxycalix[4]arenes (1 and 2). The structures of four types (cone, partial cone, 1,2-alternate, and 1,3-alternate) of conformers for each compound have been optimized using ab initio RHF/6-31G and 6-31$G^{**}$ methods. General trends in relative stabilities of tetramethyl ether derivatives of calix[4]arene 1 and p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene 2 are similar and decrease in following order: partial cone (most stable) > cone > 1,3-alternate > 1,2-alternate. The calculated results of the most stable conformation of partial cone structure agree with the reported NMR experimental observations.
