  • This paper presents a new method for obtaining the noninvasive and unrestrained blood pressure readings noninvasively and unrestrainedly using based on reflected wave arrival time(RAT) in the volume of pulse. Since this new method employs only volume pulse, is more rapider and simpler than the method using pulse transit time(PTT) because it only employs the volume of pulse. Blood pressure, PTT and RAT were acquired from 15 healthy subjects. Each subjects were performed forty trials of each measurement. As a result of those trials, the mean error between oscillometric and RAT measurements for systolic blood pressure was $4.55\pm5.64mmHg$. This result showed quite equal with the mean error between oscillometric and PPT measurf:ments, $4.22\pm5.30mmHg$, However, it was not obtained a satisfactory result in the relativity of oscillometric to both RAT and PPT measurements for diastolic blood pressure because of personal difference. To conclude, the method of systolic blood pressure estimation noninvasively and unrestrainedly using by RAT may be used as the method by PTT. Nevertheless, additional studies would be necessary for the RAT/PTT estimation of diastolic blood Pressure measurement.

  • In this paper, we propose a subject-independent regression model to estimate systolic blood pressures (SBP) conveniently and continuously. There have been several researches on estimating SBP with pulse transit time (PTT) and they showed promising results. However, previous studies used only PTT as the estimation parameter, and their models were generated with just one person's PTT data which is not applicable to estimating other person's SBP. Therefore, we collected several additional biometric parameters with 202 healthy subjects. After statistical analysis of measured biometric parameters with SBP, we chose final estimating parameters including PTT to generate a multiple linear regression model for estimating SBP. Comparing the results of our study with approvable standards of automated sphygmomanometers developed by Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation and approved by American National Standards Institute (ANSI/AAMI) indicates that our proposed method for continuously blood pressures monitoring gives an acceptable error.

  • We evaluated the newly developed plastic sodium citrate tubes for routine coagulation test by direct comparison with glass citrate theophylline adenosine dipyridamole (CTAD) tubes. Blood was drawn from 100 patients into glass CTAD tubes and plastic sodium citrate tubes. After collection, samples were centrifuged at 1500 ${\times}$g for 15 min at $22^{\circ}C$. Prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), fibrinogen were measured by using the Coagrex-800 (IRC, Japan). We used comparison plot by linear regression model and difference plot graphs to compare the results of the independent measurements of PT, aPTT, fibrinogen between glass CTAD tubes and plastic sodium citrate tubes. On the comparison study between glass CTAD tubes and plastic sodium citrate tubes, the correlation coefficients (R) were 0.99 for PT, 0.97 for aPTT and 0.97 for fibrinogen. This results implicated good correlation of each parameter between two tubes. Although the difference plot graph analysis showed statistically significant differences between glass and plastic tubes for PT, aPTT and fibrinogen, the range of difference was acceptable according to the CLSI/NCCLS guideline. The plastic sodium citrate tubes showed good correlation with the glass CTAD tubes, so it can substitute glass citrate tube for routine coagulation tests.

  • A fungal strain, designated PTT-2, was isolated from the bark of the trunk of a persimmon (Diospyros kaki) tree in Cheongdo, Korea. The isolate showed morphological similarities with Leptosphaerulina saccharicola. Strain PTT-2 had more rapid growth on potato dextrose agar medium than on oatmeal agar, malt extract agar, and synthetic nutrient poor agar media, with colony sizes of 53.8 mm, 49.8 mm, 48.4 mm, and 28.1 mm after 7 days at $25^{\circ}C$ temperature, respectively. Strain PTT-2 produced ascospores, which had irregular wavy edges, oblong to ellipsoidal shape, hyaline appearance and $23.6{\times}10{\mu}m$ size. The black ascomata were developed on PDA medium, and asci were recorded. A BLAST search of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, TEF1-${\alpha}$ and RPB2 gene sequences revealed that strain PTT-2 showed more than 99% nucleotide similarity with a strain of Leptosphaerulina saccharicola previously reported from Thailand. A neighbor-joining phylogenetic tree was constructed by concatenating the above-mentioned sequences, and showed that strain PTT-2 clustered in the same clade with L. saccharicola. Based on these findings, this is the first record of Leptosphaerulina saccharicola occurring in Korea.

  • Curcumin, a polyphenol responsible for the yellow color of the curry spice turmeric, possesses antiinflammatory, antiproliferative and antiangiogenic activities. However, anticoagulant activities of curcumin have not been studied. Here, the anticoagulant properties of curcumin and its derivative (bisdemethoxycurcumin, BDMC) were determined by monitoring activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), prothrombin time (PT) as well as cell-based thrombin and activated factor X (FXa) generation activities. Data showed that curcumin and BDMC prolonged aPTT and PT significantly and inhibited thrombin and FXa activities. They inhibited the generation of thrombin or FXa. In accordance with these anticoagulant activities, curcumin and BDMC showed anticoagulant effect in vivo. Surprisingly, these anticoagulant effects of curcumin were better than those of BDMC indicating that methoxy group in curcumin positively regulated anticoagulant function of curcumin. Therefore, these results suggest that curcumin and BDMC possess antithrombotic activities and daily consumption of the curry spice turmeric might help maintain anticoagulant status.

  • This paper describes the experiments for investigating the effects of thermal stability of several commercial carpet mate materials. The melting point and thermal decomposition temperature was measured by means of a differential scanning calorimeter(DSC) in air condition. The DSC data and burning test results of nylon bulked continuous filament(N-BCF) yarn 100%, nylon(NY), polypropylene(PP), and a new material named polytrimethyleneterephthalate(PTT) were analysed to obtain the effect on their thermal stability. Conclusively, we observed that PTT and PP were approximately $380^{\circ}C$ and $240^{\circ}C$ to start the thermal decomposition, respectively. In other words, PTT is thermally the most stable material for carpet manufacturing.

  • Facial pores are a visible topographic feature of skin surfaces and are generally the enlarged openings of pilosebaceous follicles. Enlarged facial pores can be a significant cosmetic problem, particularly for women. Recently, gold nanoshell-mediated photothermal therapy (PTT) has been reported to be effective in treating recurrent acne. The treatment of enlarged facial pores with gold nanoshell-mediated PTT produced excellent results with no side effects. The two cases reported here demonstrate the possibility of gold nanoshell-mediated PTT as a safe and effective treatment for enlarged facial pores.

  • The most important personal health care in digital health care is a very important issue mainly for chronic diseases. Therefore, it is important to develop a simple wearable device for real-time health management. Existing blood pressure estimation wearable devices use PPG characteristics to analyze PTT and propose blood pressure estimation algorithms. However, the influencing factors of the algorithm such as the reproducibility of PPG, whether to apply various PTTs, and variables generated from the physical differences of the measurers are actually very complex. Therefore, in this study, the correlation between PTT, SBP, and DBP was analyzed, and it was designed to use PPG sensors for device miniaturization. The blood pressure estimation algorithm took into account differences in PPG, heart rate, and personal variables.
