Amorphous hydrogenated silicon carbide (a-SiC:H) films were deposited at the temperature of 40$0^{\circ}C$ using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The a-SiC:H films were characterized by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and nanoindentation method. By increasing the plasma power from 20W to 160W, the oxygen content of the a-SiC:H films were observed to decrease from 12.1% to 4.4%. On the other hand, the plasma power did not affect the ratio of carbon to silicon in our experiment where the 1, 3-disilabutane was used as the precursor. Microhardness of the films was observed to increase as the plasma power increased, while the elastic modulus was observed to gave a maximum value at the plasma power of 80W. Microhardness of the film is thought to be strongly affected by the content of adventitious oxygen in the film and it is concluded that the hardness of the film can be improved by increasing the plasma power.

The nematic liquid crysta](NLC) aligning capabilities using a-C:H thin film deposited at the three kinds of rf bias condition were investigated. A high pretilt angle of NLC on low substrate rf bias applied a-C:H thin films was observed and the low pretilt angle of the NLC on high substrate rf bias applied a-C:H thin films was observed. Consequently, the high NLC pretilt angle and the good aligning capabilities of LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the a-C:H thin film deposited at 1 W rf bias condition can be achieved. It is considered that pretilt angle of the NLC may be attributed to substrate rf bias condition and IB energy time. Therefore, LC alignment is affected by topographical structure forming strong IB energy.

The electrical properties and microstructure of nitrogen-doped poly 3C-SiC films were studied according to different thickness. Poly 3C-SiC films were deposited by LPCVD(low pressure chemical vapor deposition) at $900^{\circ}C$ and 4 Torr using $SiH_2Cl_2$ (100 %, 35 sccm) and $C_2H_2$ (5 % in $H_2$, 180 sccm) as the Si and C precursors, and $NH_3$ (5 % in $H_2$, 64 sccm) as the dopant source gas. The resistivity of the 3C-SiC films with $1,530{\AA}$ of thickness was $32.7{\Omega}-cm$ and decreased to $0.0129{\Omega}-cm$ at $16,963{\AA}$. In XRD spectra, 3C-SiC is so highly oriented along the (1 1 1) plane at $2{\theta}=35.7^{\circ}$ that other peaks corresponding to SiC orientations are not presented. The measurement of resistance variations according to different thickness were carried out in the $25^{\circ}C$ to $350^{\circ}C$ temperature range. While the size of resistance variation decreases with increasing the films thickness, the linearity of resistance variation improved.
We investigated the liquid crystal (LC) alignment phenomena using a-C:H and a-C:F:H thin films. Homogeneous alignment is obtained using ion beam treated hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) thin films. Homeotropic alignment is obtained using F treated a-C:H thin films, namely, fluorinated amorphous carbon (a-C:F:H) thin films. We investigated the relationship between the surface properties of amorphous carbon based alignment layer and LC alignment phenomena.

This letter focuses on the liquid crystal alignment characteristics according to the properties of hydrogenated amorphous carbon(a-C:H) thin film deposited by RPECVD(Remote Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) method using $C_2H_2$ and He gases. The properties of the deposited thin films were controlled by the ion beam irradiation time and ion beam energy. The results show that not ion beam energy but ion beam irradiation time plays an important role in the properties of a-G:H thin films. As the ion beam irradiation time increases, not only the sp2 concentration in a-G:H thin films but also liquid crystal pretilt angle was varied.

Hydrogenated amorphous carbon films were deposited by ERC-PECVD with deposition conditions, such as ECR power, gas composition of methane and hydrogen, deposition time, and substrate bias voltage. The characteristics of the film were analyzed using the AES, ERDA, FTIR. Raman spectroscopy and micro hardness tester. From the results of AES and ERDA, the elements in the deposited film were confirmed as carbon and hydrogen atoms. FTIR spectroscopy analysis shows that the atomic bonding structure of a-C:H film consisted of sp³and sp²bonding, most of which is composed of sp³bonding. The structure of the a-C:H films changed from CH₃bonding to CH₂or CH bonding as deposition time increased. We also found that the amount of dehydrogenation in a-C:H films was increased as the bias voltage increased. Raman scattering analysis shows that integrated intensity ratio (I/sub D//I/sub G/) of the D and G peak was increased as the substrate bias voltage increased, and films hardness was increased.
B-SiC thin films were fabricated on Si(100) substrate under 1 atom by fVD. The effects of deposition conditions on the growth and the properties especially crystallinity and prefer ential alignment of these thin films were investigated. SiH4 and CH4 were used as source gases and H2 as Carrier gas. Th9 growth Of B-SiC thin films with changing parameters such as the growth temperature, the ratio of source gases (SiH4/CH4 ) and the total amount of source gases. The grown thin films were characterized by using SEM, a -step, XRD, Raman Spectro- scopy and TEM. Chemical conversion process improved the quality of thin films due to the formation of SiC buffer layer. The crystallinity of SiC thin films was improved when the growth temperature was higher than l150t and the amount of CH4 exceeded that of SiH4. The better crystallinity, the better alignment to the crystalline direction of substates. TEM analyses of the good quality thin films showed that the grain size was bigger at the surface than at the interface and the defect density is not depend on the ratio of the source gases.
The effectiveness of a proteinaceous fibrous material formed during commercial fermentation of soy protein (PFSP) and cysteine addition were evaluated in order to improve on the properties of soy protein-based films. Nine types of films were prepared at pH 7, 9, and 11, with heat treatments at $70^{\circ}C\;and\;90^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, by casting 5% (w/w) PFSP aqueous solution, containing 2.25% (w/w) glycerol, on to polystyrene plates. The tensile strength (TS) of films ranged from 3.88 to 6.87 MPa. The highest puncture strength (PS) was observed with pH 7.0 films prepared from PFSP solution heated at $70^{\circ}C$ (P<0.05). Alkaline pH and temperature caused a decrease in both the TS and PS of the films. The thickness of films ranged from $58\;to\;74{\mu}m$. Water vapor permeabilities of the films decreased with increasing pH and temperature. To produce films from PFSP, pH value of 7.0 to 9.0 and heat treatment of $70^{\circ}C\;to\;90^{\circ}C$ were needed. A soluble nature of PFSP films in water might be useful for preparation of hot water-soluble pouches. Cysteine addition could be necessary to produce films with increased TS and enhanced barrier properties. The combination treatment that provided the best combination of barrier and mechanical properties was the PFSP film prepared at pH 7.0 with addition of 1% cysteine. The films were good oxygen barriers.
B-doped hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbide (a-SiC:H) thin films were prepared by plasma-enhanced chemical-vapor deposition in a gas mixture of $SiH_4$, $CH_4$ and $B_2H_6$. Microstructures and chemical properties of a-SiC:H films grown with varing the volume ratio of $CH_4$ to $SiH_4$ were characterized with various analysis methods including scanning electron microscopy(SEM), X-ray diffractometry(XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), UV absorption spectroscopy and photoconductivity measurements. While Si:H films grown without $CH_4$ showed amorphous state, the addition of $CH_4$ during deposition enhanced the development of a microcrystalline phase. By introducing C atoms into the film, Si-Si and Si--$\textrm{H}_{n}$ bonds of a -Si:H films were gradually replaced by Si-C, C-C, and Si--$\textrm{C}_{n}\textrm{H}_{m}$ bonds. Consequently, the electrical resistivity and optical bandgap of a-SiC:H films were increased with the C concentration in the film.

Amorphous hydrogenated silicon carbide(a-Si1-xCx : H) films have been prepared by the rf sputtering using a silicon target in a gas mixture of Argon and methane with varying methane gas flow rate(fCH) in the range of 1.5 to 3.5 sccm at constant Argon flow rate of 30sccm and rf power in the range of 3 to 6 W/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The effects of methane flow rate and rf power on the structure and optical properties of a-Si1-xCx : H films have been analysed by measuring both the IR absorption spectrum and the UV transmittance for the films. With increasing the methane flow rate, the optical band gap(Eg) of a-Si1-xCx : H films increases gradually from 1.6eV to the maximum value of 2.42eV at rf power of 4 W/$\textrm{cm}^2$, which is due to an increases in C/Si ratio in the films by an significant increase in the number of C-Hn bonds. As the rf power increases, the number of Si-C and Si-Hn bonds increases rapidly with simultaneous reduction in the number of C-Hn bonds, which is associated with an increase in both degree of methane decomposition and sputtering of silicon. The effects of rf power on the Eg of films are considerably influenced by the methane flow rate. At low methane flow rate, the Eg of films decreased from 2.3eV to 1.8eV with the rf power. On the other hand, at high methane flow rate, that of films increased slowly to 2.4eV.
