  • In this paper, a new robust variable structure controller based on a nonlinear integral type sliding surface is presented for the control of uncertain systems with mismatched uncertainties and disturbance. A nonlinear integral type sliding surface is suggested for removing the reaching phase. After its ideal sliding dynamics is obtained, the two design methods are presented. A corresponding control input is proposed to satisfy the closed loop stability in the sense of Lyapunov and the existence condition of the sliding mode on the nonlinear integral type sliding surface, which will be investigated in Theorem 1. Through a design example and simulation study, the usefulness of the proposed controller is verified.

  • This paper describes the design of a fuzzy adaptive sliding mode controller for tracking control of robotic manipulators. The proposed controller incorporates a modified traditional sliding mode controller to drive the system state to a sliding surface and then keep the system state on this surface, and a fuzzy logic controller to accelerate the reaching phase. The stability of the control system is ensured by using Lyapunov theory. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed controller, computer simulation is conducted for a five-bar planar robotic manipulator. The simulation results show that the proposed controller can improve the reaching time and eliminate chattering of the control system at the same time.

  • The objective of this paper is to design the controller for longitudinal vehicle following which makes the vehicle follow the lead vehicle and keeps a safety distance without human driver operation. This paper presents a sliding mode control algorithm for the ACC system. The controller is based on three sliding surfaces. Each surface plays an individual control-deviation control, throttle control and brake control. In addition to sliding mode control, we propose some additional schemes to enhance controller performance. The first one is a gear shift-down controller which makes tractive force increase with a change of gear ratio. The other is a predictive correction method which reduces slinky effect.

  • We deal with second order NMP(Non-Minimum Phase) systems which are difficult to control with conventional methods because of their inherent characteristics of undershoot. In such systems, reducing the undesirable undershoot phenomenon makes the response time of the systems much longer. Moreover, it is impossible to control the magnitude of undershoot in a direct way and to predict the response time. In this paper, we propose a novel two sliding mode control scheme which is capable of determining the magnitude of undershoot and thus the response time of NMP systems a priori. To do this, we introduce two sliding lines which are in charge of control in turn. One is used to stabilize the system and achieve asymptotic regulation eventually like the conventional sliding mode methods and the other to stably control the magnitude of undershoot from the beginning of control until the state meets the first sliding line. This control scheme will be proved to have an asymptotic regulation property. The computer simulation shows that the proposed control scheme is very effective and suitable for controlling the second order NMP system because it can decide the magnitude of undershoot in a direct and stable way and reduce the response time compared with the conventional ones.

  • An industrial robot needs a simple and robust control algorithm obtaining high precision control performance in spite of disturbance and parameter's change. In this paper, for solving this problem, a new sliding mode control algorithm is proposed and applied to the trajectory control of a SCARA type robot. The proposed algorithm has diminished the chattering occurring in sliding mode by setting a dead band along the switching line on the phase plane. It shows that we can easily obtain a simple switching control input satisfying sliding mode in spite of regarding nonlinear terms of a manipulator and servo system as disturbance. A guideline for selection of dead-band width is determined by optimal value of cost function presenting magnitudes of chattering and error. By this algorithm, we can expect the high performance of the trajectory tracking of an industrial robot which needs a robust and simple algorithm.

  • This note is concerned with a robust sliding mode control(SMC) for a class of unmatched uncertain system with severe commensurate state time delay. The suggested method is extended to the control of severe state time delay systems with unmatched uncertainties except the matched input matrix uncertainty. A transformed sliding surface is proposed and a stabilizing control input is suggested. The closed loop stability together with the existence condition of the sliding mode on the proposed sliding surface is investigated through one Lemma and two Theorems by using the Lyapunov direct method with the concept of the control Lyapunov function instead of complex Lyapunov-Kravoskii functionals. Through an illustrative example and simulation study, the usefulness of the main results is verified.

  • A new control algorithm is developed to achieve the robust performance of the system during the overall control process. Time-varying sliding manifolds are proposed to remove the reaching phase which is one of common shortcomings of variable structure control scheme. A necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a sliding mode on the newly proposed time-varying sliding mode on the newly proposed time-varying sliding manifolds is derived by Lyapunov's second method. The digital simulation results show that the newly proposed control algorithm is superior to the typical variable structure control algorithm with respect to the robust performance of the system. The simplicity of the proposed control algorithm encourages control engineers to implement the proposed control algorithm in many control problems.

  • In this paper, the feedback linearization technique is used with the sliding mode control for nonlinear system. The combination of these two control techniques can be achieved by proposing a novel sliding surface which has the nonminal dynamics of the original system controlled by feedback linearization technique. The noble design of the sliding surface is based on the augmented system whose dynamics have a higher order than that of the original system. The reaching phase is removed by using an initial virtual state which makes the initial sliding function equal to zero

  • In the present paper, the mover speed control of a linear induction motor (LIM) using a sliding mode control design is proposed, considering the end effects. First, the indirect field-oriented control LIM is derived, considering the end effects. The sliding mode control design is then investigated to achieve speed- and flux-tracking under load thrust force disturbance. The numerical simulation results of the proposed scheme present good performances in comparison to that of the classical sliding mode control.

  • In this study, the performance of the tracking control of a pneumatic servo motor driven position control system using sliding mode is investigated. It is usually quite difficult to obtain precise tracking control of a pneumatic servo motor driven position control system because of the nonlinear deadband and stick-slip friction of the proportional valve. Therefore, a continuous sliding mode controller with velocity feedforward gain is proposed. Experimental results show that the tracking accurracy can be remarkably improved by adding a proper velocity feedforward term to continuous sliding mode controller.
