  • A fuzzy dynamic learning controller is proposed and applied to control of time delayed, non-linear and unstable chemical processes. The proposed fuzzy dynamic learning controller can self-adjust its fuzzy control rules using the external dynamic information from the process during on-line control and it can create th,, new fuzzy control rules autonomously using its learning capability from past control trends. The proposed controller shows better performance than the conventional fuzzy logic controller and the fuzzy self organizing controller.

  • Two-phase self-organizing neuro-modeling (SONM). the global SONM and local SONM, is designed for tracking non-stationary manufacturing processes. Radial basis function (RBF) neural network is employed, and self-tuning estimator is also developed for the determination of RBF network parameters on-line. A pattern recognition approach is presented for identifying a correct RBF neural network, which is used for identifying current manufacturing processes. Experimental results showed that the proposed approach is suitable for tracking non-stationary processes.

  • A robust motion controller based on self-organizing fuzzy control(SOFC) and feed-back tracking control technique is proposed for a two-wheel driven mobile robot. The feed-back control technique of the controller guarantees the robot follows a desired trajectory. The SOFC technique of the controller deals with unmodelled dynamics of the vehicle and uncertainties. The computer simulations are carried out to verify the tracking ability of the proposed controller with various driving situations. The results of the simulations reveal the effectiveness and stability of the proposed controller to compensate the unmodelled dynamics and uncertainties.

  • This paper presents a hybrid neural network system which used a Self-Organizing Map and Multilayer Perceptron for the problem of Malay syllables speech recognition. The novel idea in this system is the usage of a two-dimension Self-organizing feature map as a sequential mapping function which transform the phonetic similarities or acoustic vector sequences of the speech frame into trajectories in a square matrix where elements take on binary values. This property simplifies the classification task. An MLP is then used to classify the trajectories that each syllable in the vocabulary corresponds to. The system performance was evaluated for recognition of 15 Malay common syllables. The overall performance of the recognizer showed to be 91.8%.

  • The standard Hough transform has been dominantly used to detect straight lines in an image. However, massive storage requirement and low precision in estimating line parameters due to the quantization of parameter space are the major drawbacks of the Hough transform technique. In this paper, to overcome the drawbacks, an iterative algorithm based on a self-organizing map is presented. The self-organizing map can be adaptively learned such that image points are clustered by prominent lines. Through the procedure of the algorithm, a set of lines are sequentially detected one at a time. Computational results for synthetically generated images are given. The promise of the algorithm is also demonstrated with its application to two natural images of inserts.

  • A novel self-organizing fuzzy plus PD control algorithm is proposed, where the proposed controller consists of a typical fuzzy reasoning part and self organizing part in which both on-line and off-line algorithms are employed to modify the Look-Up Table(LUT) for the fuzzy control rules and to decide how much fuzzy rules are to be modifid after evaluating the control performance, respectively. And the fuzzy controller is replaced by a PD controller in a prespecified region nearby the set point for good settling actions, where gain parameters are determined by fuzzy rules based on the magnitude of error velocity at the instant when the output penetrates into the prespecified region. To show the effectiveness of the proposed controller, extensive computer simulation results as well as experimental results are illustrated for an inverted pendulum system.

  • The Growing Self-Organizing Map (GSOM), an extended type of the Self-Organizing Map, is a widely accepted tool for clustering high dimensional data. It is also suitable for the clustering of short DNA sequences of phylogenetic genomes by their oligonucleotide frequency. The GSOM presents the result of the clustering process visually on a coloured map, where the clusters can be identified by the user. This paper describes a proposal for automatic cluster detection on this map without any participation by the user. It has been applied with good success on 20 different data sets for the purpose of species separation.

  • Clustering is to group similar objects into clusters. Until now there are a lot of approaches using Self-Organizing feature Maps (SOFMS) But they have problems with a small output-layer nodes and initial weight. For example, one of them is a one-dimension map of c output-layer nodes, if they want to make c clusters. This approach has problems to classify elaboratively. This Paper suggests one-dimensional output-layer nodes in SOFMs. The number of output-layer nodes is more than those of clusters intended to find and the order of output-layer nodes is ascending in the sum of the output-layer node's weight. We un find input data in SOFMs output node and classify input data in output nodes using Euclidean distance. The proposed algorithm was tested on well-known IRIS data and TSPLIB. The results of this computational study demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm.

  • Using a neural network for vector quantization, we can expect to have better codebook design algorithm for its adaptive process. Also, the designed codebook puts the codewords in order by its self-organizing characteristics, which makes it possible to partially search the codebook for real time process. To exploit these features of the neural network, in this paper, we propose a new codebook design algorithm that modified the KSFM(Kohonen`s Self-organizing Feature Map) and then combines the K-means algorithm. Experimental results show the performance improvment and the ability of the partical seach of the codebook for the real time process.

  • This paper describes trajectory generation of a riobot arm by self-organizing neural networks. These neural networks are based on competitive learning without a teacher and this algorithm which is suitable for problems in which solutions as teaching signal cannot be defined-e.g. inverse dynamics analysis-is adopted to the trajectory generation problem of a robot arm. Utility of unsupervised learning algorithm is confirmed by applying the approximated solution of each joint calculated through learning to an actual robot arm in giving the experiment of tracking for reference trajectory.
