  • This paper presents hot spot behaviors on the rubbing surface of disk-pad type brake by using coupled thermal-mechanical analysis technique. The height of micro-asperity on the rubbing surface is usually 2∼3 ${\mu}$m in practical disk brakes. Non-uniform micro-contacts between the disk and the rigid friction pads lead to high local temperature distributions, which may cause the material degradation, and develop hot spots, thermal cracks, and brake system failure at the end for a braking period. The friction temperatures on the rubbing surface of disk brakes in which are strongly related to the hot spot and thermal related wears are rapidly concentrated on the micro-contact asperities during braking. The computed FEM results show that the contact stress, friction induced temperature and thermal strain are highly concentrated on the rubbing micro-contact asperities even though the braking speed and force are small during the braking period. This hot spot may directly produce the slippage and various thermal wears on the brake-rubbing surface.

  • Experimental studies on the aerodynamic coupling effect on natural frequencies, critical speed and flutter instability of rotating disks are investigated in this paper. The theoretical analysis uses a fluid-structure model where the aerodynamic effects are represented in terms of elastic, lift and damping and stiffness components. The experiments performed using a vacuum chamber and ASMO/DVD disks rotating in vacuum, open and enclosure in several gaps with stationary wall give three main results. One is that the aerodynamic effect by the surrounding air reduces the natural frequencies and critical speeds of the vibration modes. The second is that natural frequency of disks rotating in open air is larger than that in enclosure. Finally, it is shown that the disk vibration is reduced as the gap between the disk and the rigid wall decreases.

  • The mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V greatly vary for changes of microstructures. Therefore, when manufacturing components with this material, it is important to understand the influence of process parameters to the resulting microstructures. In the present investgation, it was attempted to relate the process parameters with the microstructures in a hot forged Ti-6Al-4V disk. The investigation was carried out by a rigid thermo-viscoplastic FEM analysis, flow stress measurements and microstructure studies. It was found that the dynamic recrystallization would hardly occur in this material and that variations of strain, strain rate and temperature of several locations in the disk were below the assumed dynamic recrystallization zone. These findings confirmed the experimental obervations that the microstructures in the disk were only deformed without being recrystallized.

  • The aerodynamically excited vibration and natural frequency of rotating CD and DVD disks are analytically and experimentally studied in this paper The theoretical analysis uses a fluid-structure model where the aerodynamic effects are represented in terms of elastic, lift and damping components. The explicit expression on natural frequency of the air coupled disk is obtained as functions of the three aerodynamic coefficients. The experiments performed using a vacuum chamber and CD/DVD disks rotating in vacuum, open air and enclosure give three main results. • The free vibration of a spinning flexible disk-spindle system supported by hydro dynamic bearings in a HDD is analyzed by FEM. The spinning flexible disk is described using Kirchhoff plate theory and von Karman non-linear strain, and its rigid body motion is also considered. It is discretized by annular sector element. The rotating spindle which includes the clamp, hub, permanent magnet and yoke, is modeled by Timoshenko beam including the gyroscopic effect. The flexible supporting structure with a complex shape which includes stator core, housing, base plate, sleeve and thrust pad is modeled by using a 4-node tetrahedron element with rotational degrees of freedom to satisfy the geometric compatibility. The dynamic coefficients of HDB are calculated from the HDB analysis program, which solves the perturbed Raynolds equation using FEM. Introducing the virtual nodes and the rigid link constraints defined in the center of HDB, beam elements of the shaft are connected to the solid elements of the sleeve and thrust pad through the spring and damper element. The global matrix equation obtained by assembling the finite element equations of each substructure is transformed to the state-space matrix-vector equation, and the associated eigenvalue problem is solved by using the restarted Arnoldi iteration method. The validity of this research is verified by comparing the numerical results of the natural frequencies with the experimental ones. Also the effect of supporting structures to the natural modes of the total HDD system is rigorously analyzed.

  • A nonsteady axi-symmetric ideal flow solution is obtained here. It is based on the rigid perfect-plastic constitutive law with the Tresca yield condition and its associated flow rule. The process is to deform a circular solid disk into a spherical shell of prescribed geometry. It is assumed that there are no rigid zones and friction stresses. The solution obtained provides the distribution of kinematic variables and involves one undetermined function of the time. This function can be in general found by superimposing an optimality criterion.

  • In this study, the effects of residual shaft bow and flexible bearings of a single disk rotor are investigated. The stiffness coefficients of a shaft with initial deflection are different from those of a straight shaft. The stiffness coefficients are calculated using Castigliano theorem considering initial deflections. The stiffness coefficients, which are obtained in this study, are in good agreement with FEM results. The speed which causes zero amplitude is shown to be the square root of the ratio of residual bow amplitude to unbalance eccentricity in the case of rigid bearings and isotropic flexible bearings, but not in anisotropic bearings.

  • A design methodology is applied for manufacturing a disk-brake piston component and a washing machine container. The design criteria are the limit drawing ratio and the forging load within the available press limit. Also, the final product should not have any geometrical defect. The rigid-plastic and elastic-plastic FEM have been applied to simulate both of the conventional manufacturing processes, respectively, which include deep drawing and forging process. Simulations of one stage process from a selected stock to the final product shape are performed for generating information on additional requirements for metal flow. The best manufacturing processes are selected, which is using a hemispherical punch in the deep drawing process for both disk-brake piston component and washing machine container.

  • Dynamic behaviors and stability of an optical disk drive coupled with an automatic ball balancer (ABB) are analyzed by a theoretical approach. The feeding system is modeled a rigid body with six degree-of-freedom. Using Lagrange's equation, we derive the nonlinear equations of motion for a non -autonomous system with respect to the rectangular coordinate. To investigate the dynamic stability of the system in the neighborhood of the equilibrium positions, the monodromy matrix technique is applied to the perturbed equations. On the other hand, time responses are computed by the Runge -Kutta method. We also investigate the effects of the damping coefficient and the position of ABB on the dynamic behaviors of the system.
