  • This paper is concerned with the problem of designing satisfactory low-order controller starting with a high-order, state space model. The success of a design approach is rooted in the Choice of a model reduction procedure. The powerful new reduction method of a modal approach was already evaluated /1/. Application of the technique to a simulated steam generator is demonstrated for the case of modal control with low-order controllers.

  • The objective of this paper is to improve the transient response characteristics of hydraulic servosystem via a reduced-order observer which is modelled based upon the nonlinear hydraulic servosystem. The observer is a second order linear model and implemented using a 8 bit micro-computer. The performance of the observer-based hydraulic servosystem was investigated through the hybrid computer simulations and experiments. The result shows that the reduced-order observer can effectively improve the transient response characteristics of hydraulic servosystem.

  • In the case of control for mechanical systems, it is highly useful to be able to provide a compact model of the mechanical system to control engineers using the smallest number of state variables, while still providing an accurate model. The reduced mechanical model can then be inserted into the complete system models and used for extended system-level dynamic simulation. In this paper, moment-matching based model order reductions (MOR) using Krylov subspaces, which reduce the number of degrees of freedom of an original finite element model via the Arnoldi process, are presented to study the eigenvalue and frequency response problems of a HDD actuator and suspension system.

  • The stiffness of joint parts in the finite element beam model are corrected by the direct comparison between the modal test and analysis model. The corrected stiffness are reviewed according to the boundary conditions of modal testing. For the improved modal test/analysis correction, more modes measured than acceleration sensors are used to make a minimal order system model. In addition, the initial F.E. model is reduced to the degrees of freedom of a minimal order system model, keeping the dynamics of the initial model. Finally, for the parametric correction of the reduced model, the submatrices are used to model the initially assumed stiffness.

  • This paper present a method of using simplified models for deriving suboptimal controllers to the original higher-order systems. Routh approximation method is a very useful technique for reducing the order of a linear systems. This method dose not require a knowlege of system eigenvalues and eigenvectors and possesses many desirable features such as preservation of reduced order model stability and minimum computational requirements. These properties are utilized to derive suboptimal controllers in this paper. In order to implement htese ocntrollers on the original system, the relationship between the state vectors of the original system and the reduced order models is required. A procedure fir evaluating an approximate aggregation matrix is also developed. A numerical example is given for the illustration of this method, shich is compared with the existing Model aggregation method in the resultant figures.

  • Detailed modeling of PEMFCs has been getting considerable interest for predicting the fuel cell performance and also for use in various systems engineering activities. While CFD-based equipment models provide detailed analyses of the performance, they are very time-consuming to develop and run. The computations become quite complex when such models have to be embedded into the flowsheet-level optimization of fuel cell systems. In this paper, we present results about building and using NN-based reduced order models for quickly and repetitively predicting the flow of reactants in a PEMFC manifold.

  • This paper presents an reduced-order near-optimal controller for the congestion control of Available Bit Rate (ABR) service in Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. We introduce the model, of a class of ABR traffic, that can be controlled using a Explicit Rate feedback for congestion control in ATM networks. Since there are great computational complexities in the class of optimal control problem for the ABR model, the near-optimal controller via reduced-order technique is applied to this model. It is implemented by the help of weakly coupling and singular perturbation theory, and we use bilinear transformation because of its computational convenience. Since the bilinear transformation can convert discrete Riccati equation into continuous Riccati equation, the design problems of optimal congestion control can be reduced. Using weakly coupling and singular perturbation theory, the computation time of Riccati equations can be saved, moreover the real-time congestion control for ATM networks can be possible.

  • This paper presents the method to reduce the order of high-order linear time invarient system via Walsh function. It is based on the matrix pseudoinverse algorithm to determine the parameters of the reduced model which minimize the sum of the squares of the errors between the reponses of the high-order system and a reduced model to a given input. This proposed method can be conveniently implemented with a computer. They will be very useful in the study of control system via Walsh function.

  • This paper deals with a control technique of eliminating the transient vibration of a geared mechanical system. This technique is based on a model-based control with a rotational speed sensor in order to establish the damping effect at the driven machine part. A rotational speed sensor is installed in a driven gear, namely a bull gear. A control model is composed of a reduced-order mechanical part expressed as a transfer function between the rotational speed of the motor and that of the bull gear. This control model estimates a load speed after the rotational speed of the bull gear is acted on the transfer function. The difference between the estimated load speed and the motor speed is calculated dynamically and it is added to the velocity command to suppress the transient vibration generated at the load. This control technique is applied to a dies driving spindle of a form rolling machine. In this paper, the performance of this control method is examined by simulations. The settling time of the residual vibration generated at the loading inertia can be shortened down to about 1/2 of the uncompensated vibration level.
