Purpose: A lot of active researches have addressed the impact of a building on global environment, but most of the researches focus on a residential building and a large office building. Hereupon, this study assessed the impact on environment quantitatively through the analysis of input materials targeting a school building. Method:This study calculated embodied energy of input materials suggested in a construction statement on a school building using the input-output analysis. This study finally carried out environmental impact assessment by applying LCIA DB shown in the preceding researches to the calculated embodied energy. Result: The analysis result revealed that the environmental impact per unit area(/$m^2$) at a school building was $4.11E-02PE{\cdot}yr$, among which Construction was found to be $3.59E-02PE{\cdot}yr$, being analyzed to account for about 87% of the total environmental impact. Also, as a result of detailed environmental impact, the impact on global warming among the total environmental impact was analyzed to be high, accounting for about 76%.

Floor finishing materials such as floor coverings and floor mats can reduce floor impact noise easily. When an impact was applied to the floor, its finishing material is deformed and the impact force that was applied to the concrete slab is changed. The softer finishing materials were, the more impact force decreased. An experimental study was performed using 14 PVC floor coverings and 16 floor mats to capture the characteristics of impact force and impact noise in the residential buildings. The test results show that the impact force spectrum and the floor impact noise spectrum have a linear relationship in the case of a bare concrete slab, and the characteristics of impact force reduction are the same as those of floor impact noise reduction.
Impact damages induced by a low-velocity impact load on carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite plates fabricated with various stacking sequences were studied experimentally. The impact responses of the CFRP composite plates were significantly affected by the laminate stacking sequences. Three types of specimens, specifically quasi-isotropic, unidirectional, and cross-ply, were tested by a constant impact carrying the same impact energy level. An impact load of 3.44 kg, corresponding to 23.62 J, was applied to the center of each plate supported at the boundaries. The unidirectional composite plate showed the worst impact resistance and broke completely into two parts; this was followed by the quasi-isotropic lay-up plate that was perforated by the impact. The cross-ply composite plate exhibited the best resistance to the low-velocity impact load; in this case, the impactor bounced back. Impact parameters such as the peak impact force and absorbed energy were evaluated and compared for the impact resistant characterization of the composites made by different stacking sequences.
Standard sound source currently used in heavy-weight floor impact sounds that cause many social problems has excessive low-frequency energy within a range from 63 Hz to 125 Hz, and is difficult to evaluate and measure. To solve these problems, studies are widely performed using a new impact source, the impact ball. In this study, the sound fields in a receiving room were compared and analyzed according to the current impact source, the bang machine, and the impact ball. And deviation of sound pressure level according to the impact source positions were compared. In case of impact ball, the sound pressure level was lower at 63 Hz and below and higher at 125 Hz and above. The same trend was observed at the low-frequency range on the horizontal and vertical planes, regardless of the type of the impact source, which showed the influence of the room mode. There was a problem with the variations in the sound pressure level according to the size or shape of the receiving room. And it also shows that change of source positions may effect the single number rating scheme.

An auditory experiment was conducted to establish annoyance criteria for floor impact noise in apartment buildings. Heavyweight floor impact sounds were recorded using an impact ball; the impact sound pressure level (SPL) together with the temporal decay rate (DR), which is quantified by the dB drop per second, was analyzed. For the experiment, A-weighted exposure levels of the heavy-weight floor impact sounds ranging 34~73 dB were evaluated at 3 dB intervals. Participants used a 7-point verbal scale to evaluate the level of annoyance from floor impact noise. The results show that the annoyance increases with increasing impact SPL and decreasing DR. Consequently, a classification and an acceptable level of floor impact sounds were proposed.
In this paper, a real time diagnostic algorithm fur estimating the impact location by loose parts is proposed. It is composed of two modules such as the alarm discrimination module (ADM) and the impact-location estimation module(IEM). ADM decides whether the detected signal that triggers the alarm is the impact signal by loose parts or the noise signal. When the decision from ADM is concluded as the impact signal, the beginning time of burst-type signal, which the impact signal has usually such a form in time domain, provides the necessary data fur IEM. IEM by use of the arrival time method estimates the impact location of loose parts. The overall results of the estimated impact location are displayed on a computer monitor by the graphical mode and numerical data composed of the impact point, and thereby a plant operator can recognize easily the status of the impact event. This algorithm can perform the diagnosis process automatically and hence the operator's burden and the possible operator's error due to lack of expert knowledge of impact signals can be reduced remarkably. In order to validate the application of this method, the test experiment with a mock-up (flat board and reactor) system is performed. The experimental results show the efficiency of this algorithm even under high level noise and potential application to Loose Part Monitoring System (LPMS) for improving diagnosis capability in nuclear power plants.

Low-velocity impact responses of composite laminates are investigated using the finite element method based on various theories. In two-dimensional nonlinear analysis, a displacement field considering higher order shear deformation and large deflection of the laminate is assumed and a finite element formulation is developed using a C$^{o}$-continuous 9-node plate element. Also, three-dimensional linear analysis based on the infinitesimal strain-displacement assumptions is performed using 8-node brick elements with incompatible modes. A modified Hertzian contact law is incorporated into the finite element program to evaluate the impact force. In the time integration, the Newmark constant acceleration algorithm is used in conjuction with successive iterations within each time step. Numerical results from static analysis as well as the impact response analysis are presented including impact force histories, deflections, strains in the laminate. Impact responses according to two typical low-velocity impact conditions are compared each other.
Effects of particle property variation of cone crack shape according to impact velocity in silicon carbide materials were investigated. The damage induced by spherical impact having different material and size was different according to materials. The size of ring cracks induced on the surface of specimen increased with increase of impact velocity within elastic contact conditions. The impact of steel particle produced larger ring cracks than that of SiC particle. In case of high impact velocity, the impact of SiC particle produced radial cracks by the elastic-plastic deformation at impact regions. Also percussion cone was formed from the back surface of specimen when particle size become large and its impact velocity exceeded a critical value. Increasing impact velocity, zenithal angle of cone cracks in SiC material was linearly decreasing not effect of impact particle size. An empirical equation, $\theta=\theta_{st}-\upsilon_p(180-\theta_{st})(\rho_p/\rho_s)^{1/2}/415$, was obtained from the test data as a function of quasi-static zenithal angle of cone crack($\theta_{st}$), the density of impact particle(${\rho}_p$) and specimen(${\rho}_s$). Applying this equation to the another materials, the variation of zenithal angle of cone crack could be predicted from the particle impact velocity.
Internal defects, such as shrinkage during casting, cause stress concentrations and initiate cracking. Therefore, it is important to understand the effects of internal defects on the mechanical properties including the impact behavior. This study evaluates the effects of internal casting defects on the impact performance of A356 Al-alloy castings. The internal shrinkage defects in the casting impact specimen are scanned using an industrial Computed Tomography (CT) scanner, and drop impact tests are performed with varing impact velocities on the A356 casting aluminium specimen ($10mm{\times}10mm$ section area) in order to locate the fracture energy under an impact load. The specimens with defects with a diameter less than 0.35 mm exhibit equivalent fracture impact energies of approximately 32 J and those with a 1.7 mm diameter defect reduced the fracture impact energy by 35%.

Low-velocity impact damage is a major concern in the design of structures made of composite materials, because impact damage is hidden inside and cannot be detected by visual inspection. The piezoelectric thin film sensor can be used to detect variations in structural and material properties for structural health monitoring. In this paper, the PVDF and PZT sensors were used for monitoring impact damage initiation in Gr/Ep composite panel to illustrate this potential benefit. A series of impact test at various impact energy by changing impact mass and height is performed on the instrumented drop weight impact tester. The wavelet transform(WT) is used to decompose the piezoelectric sensor signals in this study. Test results show that the particular waveform of sensor signals implying the damage initiation and development are detected above the damage initiation impact energy. And it is found that both PZT and PVDF sensors can be used to detect the impact damage.
