  • The Extended Kalman Filter(EKF) algorithm estimates variables and unknown parameters simultaneously and is applied to parameter identification of linear and nonlinear mechanical systems. In this paper, an EKF algorithm was developed through a computer simulation and then applied to a sealing test system as a practical example. Comparing with the frequency domain analysis, it was proved to be a useful alternative for the parameter identification.

  • Recurrent neural networks have been successfully applied to communications channel equalization. Major disadvantages of gradient-based learning algorithms commonly employed to train recurrent neural networks are slow convergence rates and long training sequences required for satisfactory performance. In a high-speed communications system, fast convergence speed and short training symbols are essential. We propose decision feedback equalizers using a recurrent neural network trained with Kalman filtering algorithms. The main features of the proposed recurrent neural equalizers, utilizing extended Kalman filter (EKF) and unscented Kalman filter (UKF), are fast convergence rates and good performance using relatively short training symbols. Experimental results for two time-varying channels are presented to evaluate the performance of the proposed approaches over a conventional recurrent neural equalizer.

  • Satellite formation flying can provide the platform for interferometric observation to acquire the precise data and ensure the flexibility for space mission. This paper presents development and verification of an algorithm to estimate the baseline between formation flying satellites. To estimate a baseline(relative navigation) in real time, EKF(Extended Kalman Filter) and UKF(Unscented Kalman Filter) are used. Measurements for updating a state-vector in Kalman Filter are GPS single difference data. In results, The position errors in estimated baseline are converged to less than ${\pm}1m$ in both EKF and UKF. And as using the two types of Kalman filter, it is clear that the unscented Kalman filter shows a relatively better performance than the extended Kalman filter by comparing an efficiency to the model which has a non-linearity.

  • This paper compares methods for attitude estimation of a UUV(Unmanned Underwater Vehicle). Attitude estimation plays a key role in underwater navigation using DVL(Doppler Velocity Log). The paper proposes attitude estimation methods using EKF(Extended Kalman Filter), UKF(Unscented Kalman Filter), and CF(Complementary Filter). It derives methods using the measurements from MEMS-AHRS(Microelectromechanical Systems-Attitude Heading Reference System) and DVL. The methods are used for navigation in a test pool and their navigation performance is compared. The results suggest that even if there is no measurement relative to some absolute landmarks, DVL-only navigation can be useful for navigation in a limited time and range.

  • In this paper, a study of 2-step damage detection for space truss structures using the extended Kalman filter theory is presented. Space truss structures are composed of many members, so it is difficult to find damaged member from the whole system. Therefore, 2-step damage identification method is applied to detect the damaged members. First, kinetic energy change ratio is used to find damage region including damaged member and then detect damaged member using extended Kalman filtering algorithm in damage region. The effectiveness of proposed method is verified through the numerical examples.

  • The existing problems of the Electro-Magnetic Suspension system such as air-gap disturbance, mass variation and actuator/sensor failure are described in amore specific manner. These problem can not be solved by conventional state-feedback and output-feedback control. Extended Kalman Filter is to linearize about a trajectory that is continually updated with the state estimates resulting from the measurements. In this paper, first, the physical properties of the EMS system are described. second, Extended Kalman Filer designed as form appliable EMS system. It is shown that state estimation performance can be obtained with the use of Extended Kalman filter, and that results from simulation, stability analyze.

  • In this paper, we present performance comparison of two methods to localize multiple robots. One is extended Kalman filter and the other is constraint propagation technique. Extended Kalman filter is conventional probabilistic method which gives the sub-optimal estimation rather than guarantee any boundary for true position of robot. In case of constraint propagation, it can give a boundary containing true robot position value. Especially, we deal with cooperative localization problem in outdoor environment for multiple robots equipped with GPS, gyro meter, wheel encoder. In simulation results, we present strength and weakness for localization methods based on extend Kalman filter and constraint propagation technique.

  • In this paper, an error compensation technique for a dead reckoning (DR) system using a magnetic compass module is proposed. The magnetic compass-based azimuth may include a bias that varies with location due to the surrounding magnetic sources. In this paper, the DR system is integrated with a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver using a finite impulse response (FIR) filter to reduce errors. This filter can estimate the varying bias more effectively than the conventional Kalman filter, which has an infinite impulse response structure. Moreover, the conventional receding horizon Kalman FIR (RHKF) filter is modified for application in nonlinear systems and to compensate the drawbacks of the RHKF filter. The modified RHKF filter is a novel RHKF filter scheme for nonlinear dynamics. The inverse covariance form of the linearized Kalman filter is combined with a receding horizon FIR strategy. This filter is then combined with an extended Kalman filter to enhance the convergence characteristics of the FIR filter. Also, the receding interval is extended to reduce the computational burden. The performance of the proposed DR/GPS integrated system using the modified RHKF filter is evaluated through simulation.

  • Structural health monitoring (SHM) systems are necessary to achieve smart predictive maintenance and repair planning as well as they lead to a safe operation of mechanical structures. In the context of vibration-based SHM the measured structural responses are employed to draw conclusions about the structural integrity. This usually leads to a mathematically illposed inverse problem which needs regularization. The restriction of the solution set of this inverse problem by using prior information about the damage properties is advisable to obtain meaningful solutions. Compared to the undamaged state typically only a few local stiffness changes occur while the other areas remain unchanged. This change can be described by a sparse damage parameter vector. Such a sparse vector can be identified by employing $L_1$-regularization techniques. This paper presents a novel framework for damage parameter identification by combining sparse solution techniques with an Extended Kalman Filter. In order to ensure sparsity of the damage parameter vector the measurement equation is expanded by an additional nonlinear $L_1$-minimizing observation. This fictive measurement equation accomplishes stability of the Extended Kalman Filter and leads to a sparse estimation. For verification, a proof-of-concept example on a quadratic aluminum plate is presented.

  • The Kalman filter is an optimal linear estimator that has been an active research topic for the past three decades. The scheme has become the milestone of modern filtering, and it is applied to many areas including navigations and controls of free vehicle. The Kalman filter technique is matured. But some problems are still remained to be resolved. The prevention of divergence induced by digital implementation, nonoptimal application for nonlinear system, and application to non-Gaussian processes are some of the problems. This paper surveys the problems. The square root filtering is suggested to prevent the divergence. The extended Kalman filter is used for nonlinear systems. And, many other approaches to Kalman-like optimal estimators are also investigated.
