Piles of a bridge pier are connected with the column through the pile cap (footing). Behavior of the pile foundation can be different according to the connection method between piles and the pile cap. Connection methods between pile heads and the pile cap are divided into two groups : rigid connections and hinge connections. Domestic design code has been specified to use rigid connection method for the highway bridge. In the rigid connection method, maximum bending moment of a pile occurs at the pile head and this helps the pile to prevent the excessive displacement. Rigid methods are also good to improve the seismic performance. However, some specifications prescribe that conservative results through investigations of both the fixed-head condition and the free-head condition should be reflected in the design. This statement may induce an over-estimated design for the bridge which has high-quality structures with casing covered drilled shafts and the PC-house contained pile cap. Because the assumption of free-head conditions (hinge connections) is unreal for the elevated pile cap system with multiple piles of the long span sea-crossing bridges. On the other hand, elastic displacement method to evaluate the pile reactions under the pile cap is not suitable for this type of bridges due to impractical assumptions. So, full modeling techniques which analyze the superstructure and the substructure simultaneously should be performed. Loads and stress state of the large diameter drilled shaft and the pile cap for Incheon Bridge which will be the longest bridge of Korea were investigated through the full modeling for rigid connection conditions.
In this study, partial drilled shafts (Bottom Cast-in-place Concrete pile) were applied to the pilot test site to ensure the bearing capacity; we used the skin friction force in the IGM to analyze the feasibility of the application of IGM theory. The soil characteristics were analyzed in cohesive, non-smear, and smooth conditions for the application of the IGM theory via geotechnical investigation and measurement of the disturbance and surface roughness. Static load and load transfer tests were conducted to calculate the allowable bearing capacity and the skin friction force by depth. The skin friction force increased with increase in the depth and standard settlement, showing a very high correlation. In addition, because the unconfined strength ($q_u$), which is the most important parameter in the cohesive IGM, cannot be measured in a weathered granite area, the static load and load transfer test results and the N value were used to obtain $q_u$.

Since the allowable bearing capacities of piles in weathered/fractured rock are mainly governed by settlement, the load-displacement behavior of the rock socketed pile should be well known. To predict pile head settlement at the design stage, the exact understanding of the load-transfer mechanisms is essential. Therefore, in this research, the load-transfer mechanisms of drilled shaft socketed into weathered rock was investigated. For that, 5 cast-in-place concrete piles with diameters of 1,000 mm were socketed into weathered gneiss. The static axial load tests and the load-transfer measurements were performed to examine the axial resistant behavior of the piles. A comprehensive field/laboratory testing program on weathered rock at the field test sites was also performed to describe the in situ rock mass conditions quantitatively. And then, the effect of rock mass condition on the load transfer mechanism was investigated. The side shear resistance of the pile in moderately weathered rock reached to yielding point at a few millimeter displacements, and after that, the rate of resistance increment dramatically decreased. However, that in the highly /completely weathered rock did not show the obvious yielding point, and gradually increased showing the hyperbolic pattern until with the relatively high displacement (>10 mm). The end bearing-displacement curves showed linear increase at least until with the base displacement of approximately 10 mm, regardless rock mass conditions.

Load Resistance Factor Design method is used increasingly in geotechnical design world widely and resistance factors for drilled shafts are suggested by AASHTO. However, these resistance factors are determined for intact rock conditions; by comparison, most of bedrocks in Korea have weathered condition, so that applying the AASHTO resistance factors is not reasonable. Thus, this study suggests the proper resistance factors for design of drilled shaft in Korea. The 22 cases of pile load test data from 8 sites were chosen and reliability-based approach is used to analyze the data. Reliability analysis was performed by First Order Second Moment Method (FOSM) applying 4 bearing capacity equations. As a result, when the Factor of Safety (FOS) was selected as 3.0, the target reliability indexes (${\beta}_c$) were evaluated as 2.01~2.30. Resistance factors and load factors are determined from optimization based on above results. The resistance factors ranged between 0.48 and 0.56 and load factors for dead load and live load are evaluated as approximately 1.25 and 1.75 respectively. However, when the target reliabilities are considered as 3.0, the resistance factors are evaluated as approximately 50% of the results when the target reliability index was 2.0.
Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) is one of the limit state design methods, and has been used worldwide, especially in North America. Also, the study for LRFD has been actively conducted in Korea. However, the data for LRFD in Korea were not sufficient, so resistance factors suggested by AASTTO have been used for the design in Korea. But the resistance factors suggested by AASHTO represent the characteristics of bedrocks defined in the US, therefore, it is necessary to determine the resistance factors for designs in Korea, which can reflect the characteristics of bedrocks in Korea. Also, the calculated probabilities of failure from conventional reliability analyses which commonly use log-normal distribution are not realistic because of the lower tail that can be extended to zero. Therefore, it is necessary to calibrate the resistance factors considering the lower-bound resistance. Thus, this study calculates the resistance factors using thirteen sets of drilled shaft load test results, and then calibrates the resistance factors considering the lower-bound resistance corresponding to a target reliability index of 3.0. As a result, resistance factors from conventional reliability analyses were determined in the range of 0.13-0.32 for the shaft resistance, and 0.19-0.29 for the base resistance, respectively. Also, the lower bounds of resistance were determined based on the Hoek-Brown failure criteria (2002) and GSI downgrading. Considering the lower-bound resistances, resistance factors increased by 0~8% for the shaft, and 0~13% for the base, respectively.
In the conventional load transfer analysis for a steel pipe drilled shaft, it was assumed that the concrete's strain is the same as the measured steel's strain and the elastic modulus of the steel and the concrete calculated by the formular as prescribed by specification is used in the calculation of pile axial load. But, the pile axial load calculation by conventional method differed to some extent from the actual pile load. So, the behavior of a steel pipe drilled shaft could not be analyzed exactly. Thus, the necessity to measure the strain for each pile component was proposed. In this study, a new approach for load transfer measurement of large diameter drilled shafts was suggested ; the strain of each pile component(i. e., steel and concrete) was measured by DRS(Deformable Rod Sensor), the elastic modulus was determined by the uniaxial compression test for concrete specimens made at test site and a value of elastic modulus was evaluated as average tangential modulus corresponding to the stress level of the (0.2-0.6)$f_{ck}$. Field application was confirmed by the results of load transfer measurement tests for 3 drilled shafts. The errors for calculated pile head load were -11 ∼16% and 3.4% separately.
The reflected signals from the defects of a pile and the boundaries between the pile and soils are analyzed to evaluate the integrity of drilled shafts in the impact-echo test. Signals varied according to both of the stiffness ratio of the pile to defects and that of the pile to surrounding soils. Model tests using the small size pile in the laboratory and numerical analyses have limitations in finding the characteristics of the signals due to different stress wave characteristics and unreliable modelling for the interaction between the pile and soils respectively. Full scale testing piles which have artificial defects are installed by the actual construction method and they were used to investigate the characteristics of reflected signals according to defects and the stiffness ratios of the pile to soils around.
For the development of design chart for drilled shafts socketed into weathered zone, the 6 bi-directional pile load tests with load transfer measurements done in two in-situ sites were performed. Also, DCPTs were performed in each test point. Maximum unit skin frictions and maximum unit end bearing capacities from pile load test results were analyzed. Inter-relationships between DCPT's characteristics were also analyzed. In the soils, the inter-relationships of maximum unit skin friction and DCPT appeared so low. But in the weathered zones, inter-relationships between maximum unit skin friction / maximum unit end bearing capacity and DCPT were so high that the coefficient of correlation is over 0.70.
The efficiency of the current design methods for computing pile resistances is analyzed using field load-settlement tests results. Twelve load-settlement test data for drilled shafts and bored piles were obtained from the literature. These load-test data were fitted using the t-z method. Subsequently, the ultimate resistances were evaluated based upon the failure criteria from following methods: (1) the Davisson's approach and (2) settlement corresponding to 5% or 10% shaft diameter approach. The ultimate resistances for these drilled shafts and bored piles were also predicted using methods based on the design code from North America (United States, Canada), Europe, and Asia (Japan). The pile resistances determined from field load-settlement tests were compared with those calculated using the design codes. The comparisons show that most design codes predict a conservative resistance for drilled shafts and bored piles. However, in the case of drilled shafts, we find that some of the design codes can over-predict the resistance and, therefore, should be applied cautiously. This research also shows that the t-z method can be successfully used to predict the ultimate resistance and the load transfer mechanism for a single pile.

Bi-directional loading test data are available to evaluate the design parameters which reflect the characteristics of a construction method and the variations of ground at the site where drilled shafts are installed. The method to obtain the design parameters of a real bridge by hi-directional loading test was introduced. The plans of multi-level testing and installation of measuring instruments should be made according to the rough estimation of axial bearing capacity, the length of pile, and the construction method. While the relationship between end bearing resistance and displacement was obtained directly from the hi-directional loading test, the relationship between unit side resistance and displacement was calculated through the measuring values. 1% displacement of pile diameter was adopted as the criteria of failure for ultimate resistance. As the settlement of pile head at the total ultimate bearing capacity obtained from these method was less than 1.5 % of pile diameter, this method was conservative to use in the field.
