  • The structural and dynamic properties of small n-alkane clusters embedded in a mesoscopic solvent are investigated. The solvent interactions are taken into account through a multi-particle collision operator that conserves mass, momentum and energy and the solvent dynamics is updated at discrete time intervals. The cluster molecules interact among themselves and with the solvent molecules through intermolecular forces. The properties of n-heptane and n-decane clusters interacting with the mesoscopic solvent molecules through repulsive Lennard-Jones interactions are studied as a function of the number of the mesoscopic solvent molecules. Modifications of both the cluster and solvent structure as a result of cluster-solvent interactions are considered. The cluster-solvent interactions also affect the dynamics of the small n-alkane clusters.

  • Sliding mode control is investigated for a discrete-time system with uncertainties. The narrowest neighborhood of the sliding surface is shown in which the state can remain. The range is determined by the upper bound of the absolute value of the uncertainty and the equation of the sliding surface. A sliding mode control algorithm is proposed to keep the state there without requiring an enormous input. Under the presence of the system parameter variations, the origin is not always stable although the sliding surface represents the stable dynamics and the state is kept in this neighborhood. The condition for the origin to be stable is investigated. Furthermore, the problems occurring when a continuous-time sliding mode control being ...

  • In this paper, the open-loop state response of the two-time-scale systems by unified approach using the $\delta$-operator is presented with an example of the aircraft longitudinal dynamics. First, the $\delta$-operator system unifies both the continuous system and the discrete system simultaneously, and the $\delta$-operator approach improves the finite word-length characteristics. This saves more computing time than that of the discrete system. Second, the singular perturbation method by block diagonalization reduces the sizes and orders of the systems. This also reduces the floating-point operations (flops). The advantage of those two approaches is shown by comparing our results with the earlier ones in the illustrative example of the longitudinal motion of F-8 aircraft.

  • The design method of H$\infty$ filter for discrete-time uncertain linear systems with multiple state delays is investigated. The uncertain parameters are assumed to be unknown but belonging to known convex compact set of polytope type less conservative than norm bounded parameter uncertainty. The modified H$\infty$ performance measure is introduced to consider the initial states values which affect the performance of filter. The objective is to design a stable H$\infty$ filter guaranteeing asymptotic stability of filtering error dynamics and minimizing H$\infty$ norm bound. The sufficient condition for the existence of filter and the filter design method are established by LMI (linear matrix inequality) approach.

  • Time delay exists inevitably in active control, which may not only degrade the system performance but also render instability to the dynamic system. In this paper, a novel active controller is developed to solve the time delay problem in flexible structures. By using the independent modal space control method, the differential equation of the controlled mode with time delay is obtained from the time-delay system dynamics. Then it is discretized and changed into a first-order difference equation without any explicit time delay by augmenting the state variables. The modal controller is derived based on the augmented system using the discrete variable structure control method. The switching surface is determined by minimizing a discrete quadratic performance index. The modal coordinate is extracted from sensor measurements and the actuator control force is converted from the modal one. Since the time delay is explicitly included throughout the entire controller design without any approximation, the system performance and stability are guaranteed. Numerical simulations show that the proposed controller is feasible and effective in active vibration control of dynamic systems with time delay. If the time delay is not explicitly included in the controller design, instability may occur.

  • This paper deals with an indirect pole placement adaptive controller design problem for discrete-time plants with arbitrary zeros in the presence of unmodeled dynamics and/or disturbances. The plant and controller parameters are estimated by separate estimators. The nonlinear feedback is introduced so that the estimated plant has as high degree of controllability as possible. The nonlinear feedback will be used in a finite time, after which the control algorithm becomes a standard pole placement one.

  • In the recent years flow around bridges are investigated using computer modeling. Selvam (1998), Selvam and Bosch (1999), Frandsen and McRobie (1999) used finite element procedures. Larsen and Walther (1997) used discrete vorticity procedure. The aeroelastic instability is a major criterion to be checked for long span bridges. If the wind speed experienced by a bridge is greater than the critical wind speed for flutter, then the bridge fails due to aeroelastic instability. Larsen and Walther (1997) computed the critical velocity for flutter using discrete vortex method similar to wind tunnel procedures. In this work, the critical velocity for flutter will be calculated directly (free oscillation procedure) similar to the approaches reported by Selvam et al. (1998). It is expected that the computational time required to compute the critical velocity using this approach may be much shorter than the traditional approach. The computed critical flutter velocity of 69 m/s is in reasonable comparison with wind tunnel measurement. The no flutter and flutter conditions are illustrated using the bridge response in time.

  • This article describes a robust state estimation method which enables to produce reliable estimates in spite of heavy perturbation including plant uncertainty and external disturbances. The main idea is to combine the standard state estimator with the perturbation observer in the estimator frame. The perturbation observer reflects equivalent quantity of plant uncertainty and external disturbances during the estimation process so that the state estimator dynamics gets as close as possible to the real plant dynamics. The robust state estimator proposed in this paper is given in a recursive discrete-time form which is very useful fur implementation purpose. In terms of the error dynamics derived for the robust state estimator, we discuss the stability issue and noise sensitivity. The effectiveness and practicality of the robust state estimator are verified through numerical examples and experimental results.

  • This paper presents automatic reentry of a deepsea reser by adaptive control. Reentry is one of the major pro blems regarding a deepsea riser. In the reentry operation, the lower end of riser must be accurately positioned over the tarket point on the seabed. But the deepsea riser shows complex elastic response due to flexibility and nonlinearity of the riser dynamics and the required positioning accuracy is high. Moreover, elastic deformation must by controlled for securing structural integrity. In adaptive control, uncertainly known parameters like added mass and drag coefficient in the riser dynamics are identified and control forces at the floating body and the riser are calculated simultaneously. An Adaptive algorithm for MIMO linear discrete time system without requiring a persistent excitation is adopted in this study. The effectiveness of adaptive control logic is tested by numerical simulation and model experiment. The designed control system shows good overall performances, so that the present study can be applied to the control of the deepsea riser.

  • In this paper, a new dual-rate digital control technique for the Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy system is suggested. The proposed method takes account of the stabilizablity of the discrete-time T-S fuzzy system at the fast-rate sampling points. Our main idea is to utilize the lifted control input. The proposed approach is to obtain the dual-rate discrete-time T-S fuzzy system by discretizing the overall dynamics of the T-S fuzzy system with the lifted control, and then to derive the sufficient conditions for the stabilization in the sense of the Lyapunov asymptotic stability for this system. An example is provided for showing the feasibility of the proposed discretization method.
