  • The deep seabed mining system is generally composed of surface vessel, lifting system, buffer, flexible pipe and miner. The milling system is regarded as a large-scale system in which each subsystem is interconnected to other one. In order to control a large-scale system, a decentralized control approaches have been proposed recently. In this paper, as a basic study on application of decentralized control, firstly, the mining system is simplified modeled, where the lifting system and buffer is regarded as a spherical pendulum and tile flexible pipe is as a two-dimension linear spring. Based on the derived model, the system characteristics and the feasibility of decentralized control are analyzed.

  • Control systems are used to limit structural lateral deflections during large external loads such as winds and earthquakes. Most recently, the semi-active control approach has grown in popularity due to inexpensive control devices that consume little power. As a result, recently designed control systems have employed many semi-active control devices for the control of a structure. In the future, it is envisioned that structural control systems will be large-scale systems defined by high actuation and sensor densities. Decentralized control approaches have been used to control large-scale systems that are too complex for a traditional centralized approach, such as linear quadratic regulation (LQR). This paper describes the derivation of energy market-based control (EMBC), a decentralized approach that models the structural control system as a competitive marketplace. The interaction of free-market buyers and sellers result in an optimal allocation of limited control system resources such as control energy. The Kajima-Shizuoka Building and a 20-story benchmark structure are selected as illustrative examples to be used for comparison of the EMBC and centralized LQR approaches.

  • This paper presents a decentralized compensator design procedure for large scale systems. By using a coordinate transformation method, interconnection terms in t도 subsystem are decoupled and a decentralized observer is designed independently as a form of Luenberger-type for each subsystem. And the decentralized compensator which can select the observer and controller gain independently is designed as a form of observer based controller for each subsystem. The proposed method has a simplicity and conciseness in the aspects of the determination of coordinate transformation matrices and the derivation of the separation principle which is adopted independently for each subsystem.

  • This study investigates the effects of the distribution channel structure on quality decisions under duopoly competition. I considers a set-up in which two retailers compete on product quality and retail price. In the set-up, the integrated retailer has the power to determine the quality of its exclusive product, while the decentralized retailer does not. For the decentralized retailer, the supplier determines product quality. I find that asymmetric pairs of a decentralized channel by one retailer and an integrated channel by the other retailer can be a Nash equilibrium in a simultaneous-channel-choice model. The two retailers select different levels of quality, and this quality competition benefits retailers by softening price competition. In a sequential-channel-choice model, I find that the leader can obtain a first-mover advantage. From the perspective of the supplier, which can decide the distribution channel structure and level of quality, both suppliers choose the decentralized channel in equilibrium.

  • We consider a class of large-scale interconnected time delay systems and investigate a decentralized robust passive control problem. sufficient conditions for unforced interconnected uncertain systems with time delay to be robustly stable with extended strictly passivity is given in terms of algebraic Riccati inequality and linear matrix inequality. The decentralized robust passive control problem for norm-bounded and positive real uncertainty is shown to be converted to extended strictly positive real control problem for a modified system which contains neither time delay nor uncertainty.

  • In this paper, a family of decentralized adaptive controller is proposed to control robot manipulators which are governed by highly nonlinear dynamic equations. The controller is computationally efficient since it does not require mathematical model or parameter values of the manipulators. The stability of the manipulators with the controller is proved by Lyapunov theory. The results of numerical simulations show that the system is stable, and has excellent trajectory tracking performance.

  • In this paper, we introduce a conservative control approach using a full feedback map and suggest a switching control between the conservative and default control. For the conservative control, we use the coordinator which performs the conjunction operation of the full feedback map information of local supervisors. Since the switching control with the coordinator extends the ability of local supervisors in the decentralized supervisory control, we can solve the problem in case the coobservability condition can not be satisfied.

  • For large-scale systems which are composed of interconnections of many lower-dimensional subsystems, decentralized control is preferable since it can alleviate the computational burden, avoid communication between different subsystems, and make the control more feasible and simpler. A power system is such a large-scale system where generators are interconnected through transmission lines. Decentralized control is therefore considered for power systems. In this paper, a robust decentralized excitation control scheme for interactions is proposed to enhance the transient stability of multimachine power systems. First we employ a DFL(Direct Feedback Linearization) compensator to rancel most of the nonlinearities; however, the resulting model still contains nonlinear interconnections. Therefore, we design a robust controller in order to deal with Interconnection terms. In this procedure, an upper bound of interconnection terms is estimated by an estimator. The resulting adaptive scheme guarantees the uniform ultimate boundedness of the closed-loop dynamic systems in the presence of the uncertainties.

  • The analysis and design method for achieving robust stabilization of Decentralized Dynamic Surface Control (DDSC) is presented for a class of interconnected nonlinear systems. While a centralized design approach of DSC was developed in [1], the decentralized approach to deal with large-scale interconnected systems is proposed under the assumption that interconnected functions among subsystems are unknown but bounded. To provide a closed-loop form with provable stability properties, augmented error dynamics for N nonlinear subsystems with DDSC are derived. Then, the reachable set for errors of the closed-loop systems will be approximated numerically in the form of an ellipsoid in the framework of convex optimization. Finally, a numerical algorithm to calculate the $L_2$ gain of the augmented error dynamics is presented.

  • In this paper, we consider the problem of designing decentralized sliding mode control laws far a class of large scale systems with mismatched uncertainties. We derive a sufficient condition far the existence of a linear switching surface in terms of a linear matrix inequalities(LMIs), and we parameterize the linear switching surfaces in terms of the solution matrices to the given LMI existence conditions. We also give an algorithm for designing decentralized switching feedback control laws. Finally, we give a design example in order to show the effectiveness of our method.
