Battery State of Charge Estimation Considering the Battery Aging (배터리의 노화 상태를 고려한 배터리 SOC 추정)

  • Proper operation of the battery powered systems depends on the accuracy of the battery SOC(State of Charge) estimation, therefore it is critical for those systems that SOC is accurately determined. The SOC of the battery is related to the battery aging and the SOC estimation methods without considering the aging of the battery are not accurate. In this paper, a new method that accurately estimate the SOC of the battery is proposed considering the aging of the battery. A mathematical model for the Battery SOC-OCV(Open Circuit Voltage) relationship is presented using Boltzmann equation and aging indicator is defined, and then the SOC is estimated combining the mathematical model and aging indicator. The proposed method takes the aging of the battery into consideration, which leads to an accurate estimation of the SOC. The simulations and experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed method for improving the accuracy of the SOC estimation.

  • This papers describes on the experimental consideration for the intrinsically-safe explosion-proof capability of rechargeable battery's body about main item rechargeable battery and cellular phone battery which is selling in domestic that IEC(International Electrotechnical Commission) recommend the measurement of ignition limit by short circuit of rechargeable battery and temperature increase test to use a explosion grade Group IIC type of explosion-proof type apparatus test an object of hydrogen gas. Because of that there are many different results for existence or nonexistence for ignition by different company and different types. It is concluded that the maximum of self temperature increasing by spark circuit of rechargeable battery is $180^{\circ}C$ in case of Nickel-Hydrogen and $110^{\circ}C$ in case of Nickel-Cadmium. The reaction of cellular battery for external temperature have following processes. It is confirmed that the temperature of reaction is rise slantly as the ambient temperature rising, then exterior shape of one is swell up and change when the temperature of ambient reach to about $130\~140^{\circ}C$, and when reach to about $160^{\circ}C$ the battery is blown up. Therefore, it is considered that have to be in considering selection of rechargeable battery using in itself due to different ignition limits of various rechargeable battery when the portable electric containing rechargeable battery are designed, produced and used, the characteristics and the proper safety factors of devices.

Performance Estimation Based on 4D Lookup Table Interpolating and Unit Cell Discharge Tests for Thermal Battery (4D Lookup Table Interpolating을 이용한 단위 전지 방전 시험 기반 열전지 성능 예측)

  • For comparison to the Li-ion battery, evaluating a thermal battery must consider additional variables. The first one is the temperature difference between the battery and its unit cell. Thermal batteries and their unit cells have a temperature difference that is caused by the thermal battery activation mechanism and its shape. The second variable is the electrochemical reaction steps. Most Li-ion batteries have a constant electrochemical reaction at the electrode, and battery voltage is affected when the concentration of Li ions is changed. However, a thermal battery has several steps in its electrochemical reaction, and each step has a different potential. In this study, we used unit cell discharge tests based on interpolating a 4D lookup table to estimate the performance of a thermal battery. From the test results, we derived an estimation algorithm by interpolating the table, which is queried from specified profile groups. As a result, we found less than a 5 percent difference between estimation and experiment at the 1.3 V cut-off time.

A Portable Impedance Spectroscopy Instrument for the Measurement of the Impedance Spectrum of High Voltage Battery Pack (고압 배터리 팩의 임피던스 스펙트럼 측정용 휴대용 임피던스 분광기)

  • The battery's State of Health (SOH) is a critical parameter in the process of battery use, as it represents the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) of the battery. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) is a widely used technique in observing the state of the battery. The measured impedance at certain frequencies can be used to evaluate the state of the battery, as it is intimately tied to the underlying chemical reactions. In this work, a low-cost portable EIS instrument is developed on the basis of the ARM Cortex-M4 Microcontroller Unit (MCU) for measuring the impedance spectrum of Li-ion battery packs. The MCU uses a built-in DAC module to generate the sinusoidal sweep perturbation signal. Moreover, it performs the dual-channel acquisition of voltage and current signals, calculates impedance using a Digital Lock-in Amplifier (DLA), and transmits the result to a PC. By using LabVIEW, an interface was developed with the real-time display of the EIS information. The developed instrument was suitable for measuring the impedance spectrum of the battery pack up to 1000 V. The measurement frequency range of the instrument was from 1 hz to 1 Khz. Then, to prove the performance of the developed system, the impedance of a Samsung SM3 battery pack and a Bexel pouch module were measured and compared with those obtained by the commercial instrument.

  • Eco-friendly magnesium-air battery is a kind of metal-air battery known as a primary battery with a very high theoretical discharge capacity. This battery is also called a metal-fuel cell from the viewpoint of using oxygen in the atmosphere as a cathode active material and magnesium alloy as a fuel. Since battery performance is determined by the properties of the magnesium alloy used as a anode, more research and development of the magnesium alloy electrode as a anode material are required in order to commercialize it as a high-performance battery. In this study, the commercialized magnesium alloys(AZ31, AZ61) were selected and then electrochemical measurements and discharge test were conducted. Electrochemical properties of magnesium alloys were investigated by OCP changes, Tafel parameters and CV measurement, and the feasibilities of AZ61 alloy with excellent discharge capacity(1410mAhg-1) as electrode materials were evaluated through CC discharge experiments.

  • The performance of lithium ion batteries depends on the usage environment and the combination ratio of cathode materials. In order to develop a high-performance lithium-ion battery, it is necessary to manufacture the battery and measure its performance while varying the cathode material ratio. However, it takes a lot of time and money to directly develop batteries and measure their performance for all combinations of variables. Therefore, research to predict the performance of a battery using an artificial intelligence model has been actively conducted. However, since measurement experiments were conducted with the same battery in the existing published battery data, the cathode material combination ratio was fixed and was not included as a data attribute. In this paper, we define a training data model required to develop an artificial intelligence model that can predict battery performance according to the combination ratio of cathode materials. We analyzed the factors that can affect the performance of lithium-ion batteries and defined the mass of each cathode material and battery usage environment (cycle, current, temperature, time) as input data and the battery power and capacity as target data. In the battery data in different experimental environments, each battery data maintained a unique pattern, and the battery classification model showed that each battery was classified with an error of about 2%.

LiPB Battery SOC Estimation Using Extended Kalman Filter Improved with Variation of Single Dominant Parameter

  • This paper proposes the State-of-charge (SOC) estimator of a LiPB Battery using the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). EKF can work properly only with an accurate model. Therefore, the high accuracy electrical battery model for EKF state is discussed in this paper, which is focused on high-capacity LiPB batteries. The battery model is extracted from a single cell of LiPB 40Ah, 3.7V. The dynamic behavior of single cell battery is modeled using a bulk capacitance, two series RC networks, and a series resistance. The bulk capacitance voltage represents the Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) of battery and other components represent the transient response of battery voltage. The experimental results show the strong relationship between OCV and SOC without any dependency on the current rates. Therefore, EKF is proposed to work by estimating OCV, and then is converted it to SOC. EKF is tested with the experimental data. To increase the estimation accuracy, EKF is improved with a single dominant varying parameter of bulk capacitance which follows the SOC value. Full region of SOC test is done to verify the effectiveness of EKF algorithm. The test results show the error of estimation can be reduced up to max 5%SOC.

  • This paper proposes a design and experiment of three phase interleaved dc-dc converter for 5kW battery charger. The charger consists of a three-phase interleaved dc-dc converter, which interfaces batteries and DC link, and a grid connected inverter. Lead-acid battery is modeled in a simple R-C model by matlab. Parameters of the battery are estimated based on step current discharging test. The battery is connected to three-phase interleaved DC-DC converter in order to reduce the ripple current to the battery and so, increase the lifetime of battery. Controller for charging and discharging mode is designed and tested in a 5kW charger prototype.

  • The effects of battery aging limit the rechargeable capacity, State of Health(SoH). It is very important to estimate the SoH in the battery monitoring system(BMS) and many algorithms of measuring the internal resistance of the battery were proposed. A method is used by applying a current source of a specific frequency to the battery and measuring the voltage response. When charging harmonic noise is generated in the voltage response, it results in poor resistance measurement accuracy. In this paper, a robust battery internal resistance measurement algorithm is proposed to eliminate the effect of charging noise by integrating the current source and voltage response signals for a certain period. It showed excellent accuracy and stable measurement results. Applying to the BMS for uninterruptible power supply, the usefulness of the proposed method is verified.

Study of Cooling Characteristics of 18650 Li-ion Cell Module with Different Types of Phase Change Materials (PCMs) (PCM 종류에 따른 18650 리튬-이온 셀 모듈의 냉각 특성 연구)

  • The performance and cost of electric vehicles (EVs) are much influenced by the performance and service life of the Li-ion battery system. In particular, the cell performance and reliability of Li-ion battery packs are highly dependent on their operating temperature. Therefore, a novel battery thermal management is crucial for Li-ion batteries owing to heat dissipation effects on their performance. Among various types of battery thermal management systems (BTMS'), the phase change material (PCM) based BTMS is considered to be a promising cooling system in terms of guaranteeing the performance and reliability of Li-ion batteries. This work is mainly concerned with the basic research on PCM based BTMS. In this paper, a basic experimental study on PCM based battery cooling system was performed. The main purpose of the present study is to present a comparison of two PCM-based cooling systems (n-Eicosane and n-Docosane) of the unit 18650 battery module. To this end, the simplified PCM-based Li-ion battery module with two 18650 batteries was designed and fabricated. The thermal behavior (such as temperature rise of the battery pack) with various discharge rates (c-rate) was mainly investigated and compared for two types of battery systems employing PCM-based cooling. It is considered that the results obtained from this study provide good fundamental data on screening the appropriate PCMs for future research on PCM based BTMS for EV applications.
