  • The vibrational system of this study is consisted of a cantilever pipe conveying fluid, the moving masses upon it and an attached tip mass. The equation of motion is derived by using Lagrange equation. The influences of the velocity and the number of moving masses and the velocities of fluid flow in the pipe have been studied on the natural frequency of a cantilever pipe by numerical method. As the size and number of a moving mass increases, the natural frequency of cantilever pipe conveying fluid is decreased. When the first a moving mass Is located at the end of cantilever pipe, the increasing of the distance of moving masses make the natural frequency increase at first and third mode, but the frequency of second mode is decreased. The variation of natural frequency of the system is decreased due to increase of the number of a moving mass. The number and distance of moving masses effect more on the frequency of higher mode of vibration.

  • In this paper, a moving iron core type LOA is designed and analyzed electro-magnetically and is applied to the active control of structural vibration as an active mass driver. Structural vibration is sensored by the accelerometer attached the structure and reduced by the optimally controlled motion of active mass of LOA giving anti-phase inertia farce to the structure. As a result, the basement of the application of LOA as an active mass driver is successfully established.

  • In this work, an optimization method of Friction Tuned Mass Damper (FTMD) parameters is presented. Friction tuned mass dampers (FTMD) are attached to mechanical structures to reduce their vibrations with dissipating the vibratory energy through friction between both bodies. In order to exploit the performances of FTMD, the determination of the optimum parameters is recommended. However, the presence of Coulomb's friction force requires the resolution of a non-linear stick-slip problem. First, this work aims at determining the responses of the vibratory system. The responses of the main mass and of the FTMD are determined analytically in the sticking and sliding phase using the equivalent damping method. Second, this work aims to optimize the FTMD parameters; the friction coefficient and the tuned frequency. The optimization formulation based on the Ricciardelli and Vickery method at the resonance frequencies, this method is reformulated for a system with a viscous damping. The inverse problem of finding the FTMD parameters given the magnitude of the force and the maximum acceptable displacement of the primary system is also considered; the optimization of parameters leads to conclude on the favorable FTMD giving significant vibration decrease, and to advance design recommendations.

  • We investigated artificial mass seed production of a Chinese scallop, Patinopecten yessoensis, in 2004. The GSI(gonad somatic index) of the Chinese scallop, P yessoensis was 17.2 on mid-February, 20.2 on mid-March, while that of Korean scallop, P yessoensis was 6.9 on mid-February, 10.8 on mid-March. Matured 120 females and 350 males were selected for artificial mass production. They were exposed in air for 1 hr at over $20^{\circ}C$, and placed into a spawning tank(20 ton) containing sea water treated with UV radiation at $12^{\circ}C$. We gained a total of 228,000 thousand scallop embryos between March 10th and 15th, and reared larvae at the indoor tank during 25 days. When the mean shell length of larvae reached 250 ${\mu}m$ and they have eye-spots, the number of pre-settling larvae was 47,500 thousand. We gained 1,850 thousand attached scallop spats from two kinds of collectors. Attached spats were reared in indoor tank for different periods from 5 days to 60 days. They were divided into 5 groups according to the length of reared days. Each group of attached spats was moved to intermediate rearing sites at Yangyang fishing port in Gangreung-city for acclimation to ocean environments. The highest survival rate of attached spats was 13.0% shown at the group reared for 12 days, but the significant difference in their growth was not found between the groups. The shell length of artificial attached spats increased from 0.9 ${\mu}m$ on July 10th to 24.7 ${\mu}m$ on December 16th with the survival rate of 85.0% while that of natural attached spats increased from 0.6 ${\mu}m$ on July 10th to 23.9 ${\mu}m$ on December 16th with the survival rate of 85.7%.

  • Bioremediation of hazardous hydrophobic organic compounds, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), is a major environmental concern due to their toxic and carcinogenic properties. Due to their hydrophobicity, the hydrophobic organic compounds are mainly associated with the soil organic matter or nonaqueous-phase liquids. A major question concerns the relationships between biodegradation and sorption. This work develops and utilizes a non- steady state model for evaluating the interactions between sorption and biodegradation of phenanthrene, a 3-ring PAH compound, in soil-slurry systems. The model includes sorption/desorption of a target compound, its utilization by microorganisms as a primary substrate existing in the dissolved phase and/or the sorbed phase in biomass and soil, oxygen transfer, and oxygen utilization as an electron acceptor. Biodegradation tests with phenanthrene were conducted in liquid and soil-slurry systems. The soil-slurry tests were performed with very different mass transfer rate: fast mass transfer in a flask test at 150 rpm, and slow mass transfer in a roller-bottle test at 2 rpm. In the slurry tests, phenanthrene was degraded more rapidly than in liquid tests, but with a similar rate in both slurry systems. Modeling analyses with several hypotheses indicate that a model without biodegradation of compound sorbed to the soil was not able to account for the rapid degradation of phenanthrene, particularly in the roller bottle slurry test. Reduced mass-transfer resistance to bacteria attached to the soil is the most likely phenomenon accounting for rapid sorbed-phase biodegradation.

  • This paper is concerned with the development of linear magnetic actuator for active vibration control. The newly developed linear magnetic actuator consists of permanent magnets and copper coils. On the contrary to the voice-coil type actuator, the linear magnetic actuator utilizes magnetic flux to generate the shaft movement. In this study, experiments on the prototype linear magnetic actuator were carried out to investigate its dynamic characteristics. Block and inertia forces generated by the actuator were measured. The experimental results show that the actuator can be used as both actuator and active tuned-mass damper. The linear magnetic actuator was attached to a cantilever as the active-tuned mass damper and active vibration control experiment was carried out. The experimental results show that the newly developed linear magnetic actuator can be effectively used for the active vibration control of structures.

  • The heat transfer coefficients were calculated numerically to see the effects of radiation around the porous medium put on the flat plate at a distance from the leading edge of flat plate for the two-dimensional laminar flows. To verify the analytical model developed and invoke the heat/mass transfer analogy, an experiment was carried out using naphthalene sublimation technique. From the effects of the wake, Sherwood number is maximum around the region where the porous medium is attached. The theoretical results correspond well with the experimental results at small Darcy number. Permeability of ceramic blocks used for experiment was also measured and the Forchheimer equation is applicable in our measurement range.

  • This study is concerned with dynamic characteristics of a circular ring with a concentrated mass attached. The equations of motion are set up and are solved by using Laplace transformation. The ratio of a concentrated mass to the mass of circular ring is used as a parameter. Experiment was performed by employing impulse test and the results show good agreement with those of analysis. The results of this study can be utilized in vibrational analysis of axisymmetric shells with slight asymmetries.
