[ $Co_{100-X}Zr_X$ ] (x=10-40) alloys were prepared by using a mechanical alloying technique. Phase constitution of the crystallised material depended on the annealing temperature. The $Co_{82}Zr_{18}$ alloy crystallised at lower temperature around $550^{\circ}C$ consisted of $Co_{23}Zr_6$, $Co_5Zr$ and fcc-Co phases, while the alloy crystallised at higher temperature around $800^{\circ}C$ consisted of $Co_{23}Zr_6$ and fcc-Co phases. Phase constitution of the crystallised material also depended on the chemical composition of the alloy. The material with lower Zr content less than 10 at% Zr consisted of $Co_{23}Zr_6$ and fcc-Co, and the material with higher Zr-content over 30 at% consisted of $Co_2Zr$ phase. The material containing 15-20 at% Zr consisted of $Co_{23}Zr_6$, $Co_5Zr$ and fcc-Co. Only the material containing $Co_5Zr$ phase exhibited substantial coercivity, and it was confirmed that coercivity in the mechanically alloyed Co-Zr alloy was originated from the $Co_5Zr$ phase.
$ZrB_2$-based composites are candidate materials for ultra-high temperature materials (UHTMs). $ZrB_2$ has become an indispensable ingredient in UHTMs, due to its high melting temperature, relatively low density, and excellent resistance to thermal shock or oxidation. $ZrB_2$ powders are usually synthesized by solid state reactions such as carbothermal, borothermal, or combined carbothermal reaction. SiC is added to this system in order to enhance the oxidation resistance of $ZrB_2$. In this study, $ZrB_2$?based composites were successfully synthesized and densified through two different processing paths. $ZrB_2$ or $ZrB_2$ 25 vol.%SiC was fully synthesized from oxide starting materials with reducing agents after heat treatment at 1400$^{\circ}C$. Besides, $ZrB_2$?20 vol.%SiC was fully densified with $B_4C$ as a sintering additive after hot pressing at 1900$^{\circ}C$. The synthesis mechanism and the effect of sintering additives on densification of $ZrB_2$ ?SiC composites were also discussed.
ZrB2 ceramic and ZrB2 ceramic composites with the addition of SiC, WC, and SiC/WC are successfully synthesized by a spark plasma sintering method. During high-temperature oxidation, SiC additive form a SiO2 amorphous outer scale layer and SiC-deplete ZrO2 scale layer, which decrease the oxidation rate. WC addition forms WO3 during the oxidation process to result in a ZrO2/WO3 liquid sintering layer, which is known to improve the anti-oxidation effect. The addition of SiC and WC to ZrB2 reduces the oxygen effective diffusivity by one-fifth of that of ZrB2. The addition of both SiC and WC shows the formation of a SiO2 outer dense glass layer and ZrO2/WO3 layer so that the anti-oxidation effect is improved three times as much as that of ZrB2. Therefore, SiC- and WC-added ZrB2 has a lower two-order oxygen effective diffusivity than ZrB2; it improves the anti-oxidation performance 3 times as much as that of ZrB2.
Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 powders were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis. Using soluble salts such as Pb(NO3)2, TiCl4 and ZrOCl2$.$8H2O and oxide such as PbO and TiO2 as starting materials, PZT powder was hydrothermally synthesized at the temperature range between 150$^{\circ}C$ and 200$^{\circ}C$. The result showed that reactivity by alkali was decreased in the sequence of Pb(NO3)2, TiCl4, ZrOCl2, PbO, TiO2 and ZrO2. Using the first three soluble salts, PZT powder was synthesiged at 150$^{\circ}C$ for 1hr. In PbO-TiCl4-ZrOCl2 system, PZT powder was synthesized at 150$^{\circ}C$ for 8rs. In Pb(NO3)2-TiO2-ZrOCl2 system, PZT powder was synthesized at 150$^{\circ}C$ for 16hrs, in PbO-TiO2-ZrOCl2 system, the powder was synthesized at 200$^{\circ}C$ for 8hrs.
Relations between the composites of SiC-$ZrB_2$ electro-conductive ceramic composites and their electrical resistivity, as well as their temperature, were investigated. The electrical resistivity of hot-pressed composites was measured by the Pauw method in the temperature of RT to $100^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity of the composites follow the electrical conduction model for a homogenous mixture of two kinds of particles with different conductivity. Also the electrical resistivity versus temperature curves indicate the formation of local chains of $ZrB_2$ particles. In the case of SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites containing above 30Vol.% $ZrB_2$ showed PTCR, whereas the electrical resistivity of SiC-15Vol.% $ZrB_2$ showed NTCR.
Al-Cr-Zr metal powders were prepared by cryo-milling(-75$^{\circ}C$),ambi-milling(25$^{\circ}C$) and warm-milling(200$^{\circ}C$) to investige the effect of milling temperature. The morphogical changes and microstructural evolution of Al-6wt.%Cr-3wt.%Zr metal powder ball milling were investigated by SEM, OM and XRD. The cryo-milling at -75$^{\circ}C$ caused the more refinement of powder particle size than ambi-milling and warm-milling. The partic morpholgy of Al-Cr-Zr metal powders changed changes into spheroidal particles at 25$^{\circ}C$and spherical particles at 200$^{\circ}C$The spherical particles were formed by agglomertion and contiuous wrapping of the spheroidal particles. The calculated Al crystallite size in Al-Cr-Zr metal powders by the Scherer equation were refined rapidly for short milling time -75$^{\circ}C$compared with milling at 25$^{\circ}C$ and 200$^{\circ}C$.
$ZrB_2$ has a melting point of $3245^{\circ}C$ and a relatively low density of $6.1\;g/cm^3$, which makes this a candidate for application to ultrahigh temperature environments over $2000^{\circ}C$. Beside these properties, $ZrB_2$ is known to have excellent resistance to thermal shock and oxidation compared with other non-oxide engineering ceramics. In order to enhance such oxidation resistance, SiC was frequently added to $ZrB_2$-based systems. Due to nonsinterability of $ZrB_2$-based ceramics, research on the sintering aids such as $B_4C$ or $MoSi_2$ becomes popular recently. In this study, densification and high-temperature properties of $ZrB_2$-SiC ceramics especially with $B_4C$ are investigated. $ZrB_2$-20 vol% SiC system was selected as a basic composition and $B_4C$ or C was added to this system in some extents. Mixed powders were sintered using hot pressing (HP). With sintered bodies, densification behavior and high-temperature (up to $1400^{\circ}C$) properties such as flexural strength, hardness, and so on were examined.
Pseudotetragonal ZrO0.75S whose space group is P212121 was synthesized and the cell dimensions were a=5.110(2) $\AA$, b=5.110(7) $\AA$, and c=5.198(8) $\AA.$ The space group P212121 seems to be resulted from lowering the symmetry of cubic ZrOS structure with P213 space group by lattice distortion due to the oxygen defects. In the distorted structure, bond shortening between metal-nonmetal by reduction of cell volume and alternation of Zr-Zr distance were observed. Dielectric constant and loss data of the bulk material in temperature range -170 to 20 $^{\circ}C$ and frequency range 50 Hz to 1 MHz showed that there was dielectric transition at around -70 $^{\circ}C$ originated from the relaxation of Zr-S segment. Comparing with ZrO2 exhibited the dielectirc constants, 9.0 at room temperature, ZrO0.75S showed high dielectric constant, k = 200.2 at 100 kHz. The activation energy of relaxation time due to dielectric relaxation of Zr-S was 0.47 eV (11.3 kcal/mole). According to the impedance spectra, ZrO0.75S showed more parallel circuit character between the resistance and capacitance components at the temperature (-70 $^{\circ}C)$ that the Zr-S dielectric relaxation was observed.
