There is emerging interest in using xenotransplantation of porcine cells, tissues and organs for treatment of human illness. This article reviews the current status of xenotransplantation, with particular emphasis on the physiological and immunological barriers to xenotransplantation and genetic manipulations to overcome xenograft rejection. Preliminary success in xenotransplantation therapy for human Parkinson's disease using porcine foetal brain cells is described. Finally the zoonotic dangers of porcine xenotransplantation, most particularly porcine endogenous retroviruses (PERVs), are discussed.

Bats are an important reservoir of several zoonotic diseases. However, the circulation of bat coronaviruses (BatCoV) in live animal markets in Indonesia has not been reported. Genetic characterization of BatCoV was performed by sequencing partial RdRp genes. Real-time polymerase chain reaction based on nucleocapsid protein (N) gene and Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay against the N protein were conducted to detect the presence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) viral RNA and antibody, respectively. We identified the presence of BatCoV on Cynopterus brachyotis, Macroglossus minimus, and Rousettus amplexicaudatus. The results showed that the BatCoV included in this study are from an unclassified coronavirus group. Notably, SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA and antibodies were not detected in the sampled bats.

Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen that causes bacterial meningitis in humans. S. suis is an encapsulated gram-positive facultative anaerobic bacterium and is an important pathogen in pigs. This infectious disease usually manifests in humans as meningitis, endocarditis, septicemia, and arthritis. Most cases originate in Southeast Asia, and human S. suis infections are often reported in countries with a high density of pigs. Meningitis is a common clinical manifestation of S. suis infection. Moreover, hearing loss is a common complication that can be bilateral, profound, and/or permanent. This report presents two cases of bacterial meningitis and hearing loss caused by S. suis in patients without a history of direct exposure to pigs in an intensive pork industry region.

The prevalence of some swine reproductive and zoonotic diseases in Colombia is unknown, making their management difficult. This study assessed the prevalence of porcine circovirus type 3 (PCV3), Leptospira interrogans, pseudorabies virus, and porcine gamma-herpesvirus by polymerase chain reaction in sows in the productive stage, from farms with a history of reproductive failures, at the department of Tolima. The prevalence of PCV3 was 2.6% and 12.6% for L. interrogans, with some samples co-infected with PCV2. Owing to the coinfections with PCV2, it is necessary to establish whether the interactions between these pathogens were related to the presence of reproductive problems.

Objective: Lao PDR's recent accession to the World Trade Organization necessitates a greater understanding of the patterns and risk of livestock production in order to better align national policy with the Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures. This eco-health study was conducted to improve understanding of the interrelations between market chains and zoonotic infection risks at two strategic cross border points between Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam. Methods: Information gained from smallholder farmer/trader interviews was integrated with serological surveys for pig-associated zoonoses-including hepatitis E virus (HEV), Taenia solium (T. solium) and trichinella-to identify potential linkages between disease risk and pig production and slaughter in low input systems common across the country. Results: Trichinella and HEV exposure was high in both humans and pigs in both study areas, significantly associated with pig slaughter and the subsequent consumption and handling of raw pork products. T. solium demonstrated a strong geographical and ethnic association with the northern study area bordering Vietnam. With the right knowledge and accessible, affordable inputs, the majority of smallholder farmers indicated a willingness to invest more in pig production, which could simultaneously improve livelihoods and decrease exposure to HEV, Trichinella, and T. solium through increased access to formal markets and an improved slaughter processes. Conclusion: The linkages identified when assessing disease risk in the context of potential economic and cultural drivers of transmission highlight the importance of a systems-based approach for the detection and control of zoonotic disease, and contributes to an improved understanding of the Lao PDR livestock sector.
Regarding to Q fever which is one of the most important zoonoses in Food (Milk) Hygiene and in Environmental Public Health, a sero-epidemiological study was carried out to detect the complement fixation antibodies to Coxiella burnetii Nine Mile strain phase II antigen among the milking cows in Kyunggi Province. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. The overall prevalence of the CF antibodies to Q fever among 989 milking cows of 75 dairy farms in Kyunggi Province was revealed as high as 58.7% by the farms and 27.8% by the individual cows with higher prevalence in Kyunggi Central and Kyunggi East regions than any other regions in the Province. 2. Anticomplementary reactions were appeared as 7.5% (74/989) and it ranged from 1.0% to 16.0% according to the regions investigated. 3. In the titration of the positively reacted sera, the figures of 16.7%, 37.5%, 29.8%, 9.5%, 2.9% and 3.6% at the serum dilutions of 1: 10, 1: 20, 1: 40, 1: 80, 1: 160 and higher than 1: 160, respectively. 4. It was recognized that the relatively higher cumulated frequency distribution of the CF antibodies was shown in the sera collected from the regions with higher prevalence of Q fever. 5. There was a high correlation between the prevalence of Q fever CF antibodies and the age which is usually equivalent to one year older than the calving history of the milking cows.
Broiler meat production worldwide has been plagued by lethal food-poisoning bacteria diseases, including listeriosis. A fatality rate of 15.6% was recorded in human beings in the EU in 2015. During 2013, a total of 200 poultry farm samples, including litter, chicken breast, farm feed, and drinking water, were collected to generate baseline data for the characterization of the genus Listeria in broiler poultry farms. Listeria spp. were detected in a total of 95 (47.5%) poultry farm samples. The isolates of Listeria spp. included L. innocua (28.5%), L. ivanovii (12.5%), L. welshimeri (4.5%), and L. monocytogenes and L. seeligeri (1% each). Listeria spp. contamination rates were higher in farm feed (70%), followed by litter (52.5%), chicken breasts (42.2%), and drinking water (10%). Almost all Listeria spp. isolates were resistant to more than three classes of antibiotics (multidrug resistant). Besides this, we observed a significant resistance level to penicillin and fluoroquinolone drugs. However, lower resistance levels were recorded for broad-spectrum cephalosporins. The inlA, inlC, and inlJ virulence genes were detected in almost all of the L. monocytogenes isolates. Thus, food safety management approaches and interventions at all stages of the broiler rearing cycle were needed to control cross-contamination and the zoonotic potential of listeriosis.
A total of 135 freshwater fish samples (Oreochromis spp. <85> and Clarias lazera <50>) were collected from different localities (shops and fish markets) in Alexandria Province-Egypt and examined for the presence of parasitic larval stages. The obtained data found the overall mean of the infestation with encysted metacercariae was 71.1% in the examined fish. The rates of infestation with encysted metacercariae were 72.9% and 68.0% in the examined Oreochromis spp. and Clarias lazera, respectively. The highest prevalence of the encysted metacercariae was found in summer (81.8%) in case of Oreochromis spp. and in winter (92.3%) in case of Clarias lazera, all these seasonal differences are statistically significant. The rate of infestation of encysted metacercariae in the anterior third, middle third and posterior third of Oreochromis spp. was found to be 82.3%, 74.2% and 95.2%, respectively, while 88.2%, 88.2% and 91.2%, respectively, in Clarias lazera. Moreover, the rate of infestation of encysted metacercariae in eyes, gills, liver, kidney and branchial cavity of Oreochromis spp. was 91.9%, 70.9%, 20.9%, 46.8% and 32.2%, respectively. In Clarias lazera the infestation rate was found to be 47.1%, 70.6%, 8.8% and 38.2% in the gills, liver, spleen and kidney, respectively. The zoonotic and public health importance of the encysted metacercariae are causes severe visceral pain, abdominal discomfort, intermittent bloody diarrhoea and colic after consumption of inadequately cooked fish especially Tilapia spp. (Oreochromis spp.).

Brucellosis is one of the common zoonoses caused by Brucella abortus (B. abortus). However, little has been reported on factors affecting invasion of B. abortus into host cells. To investigate cell-type dependent invasion of B. abortus, phagocytic RAW 264.7 and THP-1 cells and non-phagocytic HeLa cells were infected with wild-type and mutant B. abortus, and their invasion efficiencies were compared. The invasion efficiencies of the strains were cell-type dependent. Wild-type B. abortus invasion efficiency was greater in phagocytic cells than in epithelial cells. The results also indicated that there are different factors involved in the invasion of B. abortus into phagocytic cells.
