A Mechanical Model of the End Anchorage Zone of Prestressed Concrete Members

  • It is expected that recent development of mechanical models will soon supersede previous empirical methods of detailing. In this study, a mechanical model is proposed to analyze the behavior of the anchorage zone of prestressed concrete members. The main characteristics of the proposed model lies in its rational consideration of material properties such as concrete strength in biaxial stress state and that of local zone reinforced by spirals. The shear friction strength of concrete surrounding a spiral is also considered. The computational results of the proposed model as well as the existing Strut-and-Tie model(STM) and nonlinear finite element analysis are compared with experimental results. The results of the comparison revealed that the proposed model showed better prediction of the failure mode as well as the failure load. Additionally, the proposed model also explained the three-dimensional failure mechanism very well, while other methods based on two-dimensional analysis could not do so well.

Elastodynamic Response of a Crack Perpendicular to the Graded Interfacial Zone in Bonded Dissimilar Materials Under Antiplane Shear Impact

  • A solution is given for the elastodynamic problem of a crack perpendicular to the graded interfacial zone in bonded materials under the action of anti plane shear impact. The interfacial zone is modeled as a nonhomogeneous interlayer with the power-law variations of its shear modulus and mass density between the two dissimilar, homogeneous half-planes. Laplace and Fourier integral transforms are employed to reduce the transient problem to the solution of a Cauchy-type singular integral equation in the Laplace transform domain. Via the numerical inversion of the Laplace transforms, the values of the dynamic stress intensity factors are obtained as a function of time. As a result, the influences of material and geometric parameters of the bonded media on the overshoot characteristics of the dynamic stress intensities are discussed. A comparison is also made with the corresponding elastostatic solutions, addressing the inertia effect on the dynamic load transfer to the crack tips for various combinations of the physical properties.

  • This study intends to analyze the various spatial structures of the Seoul city museum with reference to the layouts and the qualitative mode of exhibition items. Understanding the way of actual exhibition design can be a clue to understand the contents of exhibition story which guarantees to make the pertinent space and visitors route organization between different levels of architectural space and exhibition space.   • Using the modified Irwin model and the modified Dugdale model, the plastic zone size near the interface crack tip in a ductile layer bonding two dissimilar elastic substrates is predicted. Validity of the models is examined by finite element method. The effects of several factors such as the mode mixity, T-stress and material properties are explored. The plastic zone size significantly decreases with the Poisson's ratio of the ductile layer.

  • An adhesively bonded power steering cylinder with a steel tube and an aluminum bracket was developed to reduce the weight of steering systems. To achieve the joint strength between the steel tube and of the aluminum bracket, the shape aluminum bracket re-designed by using the FE-analysis. Fracture behavior of the adhesive layer was considered by a cohesive zone model(CZM), which is based on the two-parameter fracture phenomenon with critical stress and fracture toughness. From the result of FE-analysis with CZM, re-designed power steering cylinder satisfied the desired joint strength for axial and torsion modes. And its joint strength was verified by the fracture test in each mode.

  • The objective of this study is to propose the FE model for mechanical clinched joint using cohesive zone model to analyze its failure behavior under impact loading. Cohesive zone model (CZM) is two-parameter failure criteria approach, which could describe the failure behavior of joint using critical stress and fracture toughness. In this study, the relationship between failure behavior of mechanical clinched joint and fracture parameters is investigated by FE analysis with CZM. Using this relationship, the critical stress and fracture toughness for tensile and shear mode are determined by H-type tensile test and lap shear test, which were made of 5052 aluminum alloy. The fracture parameters were applied to the tophat impact test to evaluate the crashworthiness. Compared penetration depth and energy absorption at the point where 50% of total displacement in result of FE analysis and experiment test for impact test, those has shown similar crashworthiness.

  • Hertzian indentation tests with sphere indenters were used to study the mechanical properties of glass-in-filtrated alumina and spinel composites and evaluated the effect of preform microstructure and evaluated the effect of preform microstructure and glass con-tents on contanct damage and strength. The spinel composite showed more brittle behavior than the alumina composite which is verified from indentation stress-strain curve cone cracks and quasi-plastic deformation developed at subsurface. Failure originated from either cone cracks(brittle mode) or deformation zone(quasi-plastic mode) above critical load for cracking(Pc) and yield ({{{{ {P }_{Y } }}) with the brittle mode more dominant in the spinels and the quasi-plastic mode more dominant in the aluminas. Even though brittle mode was dominant in the spinel composites the strength degradation from accumulation of damage above these critical loads was conspicuously small suggesting that the glass-infiltrated composites should be highly damage tolerant to the blunt contacts.

  • A proposed fuzzy-sliding mode controller in this paper shows that it can reduce amount of chattering inherent to sliding mode control and it is robust against parameter uncertainties. Sliding mode control is one of the control method for nonlinear systems. It can provide good transient performance and system robustness for nonlinear system. But chattering is a serious problem of the sliding mode control. The chattering is caused by steady/state error or uncertainties of the system. There are three kinds of method that can remove chattering. First, steady-state error can be removed by adding PI controller to the system.   • The HCCI engine is a next generation engine, with high efficiency and low emissions. The engine may be an alternative to SI and DI engines; however, HCCI's operating range is limited by an excessive rate of pressure rise during combustion and the resulting engine knock in high-load. The purpose of this study was to gain a understanding of the effect of only initial temperature and thermal stratification for reducing the pressure-rise rate in HCCI combustion. And we confirmed characteristics of combustion, knocking and emissions. The engine was fueled with Di-Methyl Ether. The computations were conducted using both a single-zone model and a multi-zone model by CHEMKIN and modified SENKIN.

  • This paper describes a dual-mode reference-less CDR(Clock Data Recovery) operating at full / half-rate and its operation algorithm. Proposed reference-less CDR consists of a frequency detector, a phase detector, a charge pump, a loop filter, a voltage controlled oscillator, and a digital block. The frequency and phase detectors operate at both full / half-rate for dual-mode operation and especially the frequency detector is capable of detecting the difference between data rate and clock frequency in the dead zone of general frequency detectors. Dual-mode reference-less CDR with the proposed algorithm can recover the data and clock within 1.2-1.3 us and operates reliably at both full-rate (2.7 Gb/s) and half-rate (5.4 Gb/s) with 0.5-UI input jitter.
