  • Effects of texture on the electrochemical behaviors of single grains in polycrystalline zinc were investigated using a capillary-based micro-droplet cell. Pontiodynamic sweeps and capacity measurements were carried out in pH 9 borate buffer solution. The cyclic voltammograms and the capacity measurements on single grains with different crystallographic orientations in polycrystalline Zn showed a strong dependence of oxide growth on crystallographic grain orientation. The total charge consumed for oxide formation and the inverse capacity increased with an increase of surface packing density of grain. suggesting the oxide formation was greater on grains with higher surface packing density.

  • The effect of dynamic flow or forced convection were investigated and compared on the formation of inhibition layer, galvanizing and galvannealing reactions through the hot-dip galvanizing simulator with the oscillation of specimen in zinc bath, continuous galvanizing pilot plant with zinc pumping system through the snout and continuous galvanizing operation with Dynamic $Galvanizing^{TR}$ system. The interfacial Al pick-up was not consistent between the results of simulator, pilot plant and line operation, but the morphology of inhibition layer became compact and refined by the forced convection. The growth of Fe-Zn intermetallics at the interface was inhibited by the forced convection, whereas the galvannealing rate would be a little promoted.

  • Precise coating weight control is very important issue on quality and minimizing operating costs on continuous galvanizing line. These days, many steel making companies are having a new understanding of cost importance by rise raw material prices and customer's requirement for cost reduction. Dongbu steel also meets these situations and decided to develop the technologies. Dongbu Steel developed Integrated coating weight control system jointly with Objective Control Ltd. and installed 2CGL and 4CGL. Several technological functions were developed and realized to achieve true hands-off operation and maximum cost benefit by combining model-based preset and dynamic prediction models. We also installed it on 1 CGL on April, 2008. This paper will present the interface, functions and application result of the integrated coating weight control system including Zn saving and coating weight uniformity.

  • The effect of zinc oxide as an inhibitor for the corrosion of steel in concrete environment was studied by weight loss measurements, potential-time behaviour and anodic polarization technique. The salient features of the investigation were: in 100% OPC extracts, the passivity of steel was readily destroyed, however extracts containing various concentration of zinc oxide, the passivity of steel was maintained even in the presence of 30,000 ppm of chloride. Alkalinity of concrete was maintained by the addition of zinc oxide. The efficiency of the inhibitor was found to increase with increasing inhibitor concentration. Addition of zinc oxide in the range 3 to 4% by weight of cement was sufficient to protect the rebars.

  • The self-discharge behavior of zinc-air batteries is a critical issue induced by corrosion and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of zinc anode. The corrosion reaction and HER can be controlled by a gelling agent and concentration of potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution. Various concentrations of KOH solution and polyacrylic acid have been used for gel electrolyte. The electrolyte solution is prepared with different concentrations of KOH (6 M, 7 M, 8 M, 9 M). Among studied materials, the cell assembled with 6 M KOH gel electrolyte exhibits the highest specific discharge capacity and poor capacity retention. Whereas, 9 M KOH gel electrolyte shows high capacity retention. However, a large amount of hydrogen gas is evolved with 9 M KOH solution. In general, the increase in concentration is related to ionic conductivity. At concentrations above 7 M, the viscosity increases and the conductivity decreases. As a result, compared to other studied materials, 7 M KOH gel electrolyte is suitable for Zn-air batteries because of its higher capacity retention (92.00 %) and specific discharge capacity (351.80 mAh/g) after 6 hr storage.

  • A chromium-free Ce-based conversion coating formed by immersion in a solution containing cerium chloride and nitric acid on AZ31 magnesium alloy has been studied. The effects of acid pickling on the morphology and the corrosion resistance of the cerium conversion coating were investigated. The corrosion resistance of the conversion coating prepared on AZ31 Mg alloy after organic acid pickling was better than that of inorganic acid pickling. The morphology of the conversion-coated layer was observed using optical microscope and SEM. Results show that the conversion coatings are relatively uniform and continuous, with thickness 1.0 to $1.1{\mu}m$. The main elements of the conversion coating of AZ31 Mg alloy are Mg, O, Al, Ce and Zn by EDS analysis. The electrochemical polarization results showed that the Ce-based conversion coating could reduce the corrosion activity of the AZ31 Mg alloy substrates in the presence of chloride ions.

  • In this study, the side reactions that greatly affect the coulombic efficiency of a zinc-air secondary battery are quantitatively analyzed on the basis of the charging-discharging characteristics, open circuit self-discharge characteristics, and a series of calculations. In particular, the charge amounts consumed by water electrolysis and self-discharge during charging process are separately determined so that the charging efficiency (the amount of charge used in actual charging with respect to the applied charge amount) can be estimated, which would enable systematic understanding of the cause of coulombic efficiency degradation. Using two cells with different charging overvoltages, the validity of the proposed method can be assessed.

  • The development of colored surface on zinc coating by the oxidation of a melten alloy of zinc with a minor amount of oxygen-avid additive such as tianium has been studied. Using a galvanizing Zinc alloy containing 0.1 to 0.3wt%Ti, gold, purple or blue color was developed clearly and stably, depending upon the extent of oxidation, by air cooling after hot dipping in a bath at temperature of $550^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$. The source of the color is light interference with surface oxide layer. THe final color depends on the thickness of the color depends on the thickness of $TiO_2$, played So compositing, temperature and time at elevated temperature after are all controlling variables. Since oxidation film such as $TiO_2$ played role of passivation film, the corrosion resistance in a colored galvanized steel sheet. It is also thought that surface oxide layer of $TiO_2$ inhibited dissolution of the coating layer.

  • It is well known that the amount of hot-dip Zn coated sheet steels used for automotive is rapidly increasing. As hot-dip steel sheets show good corrosion resistance and excellent formability, the demand for outer panel of automotive has been increased in order to satisfy with the requirement of high surface qualify. There are many kinds of factors influencing on the surface quality and the dross control in the galvanising bath is regarded as one of the most important thing. In this study the characteristic and growing behavior of dross in the galvanizing bath were investigated and the effect of dross on the surface defect of GA was surveyed. The dross defects on the GA sheet steels result from bottom dross whose diameter are larger 50$\mu\textrm{m}$ in the Zn pot. Dross-free state exist for about 30 hours from starting time of GA production.
