This study was designed to investigate the possible utilization of Zizyphus jujuba leaves as a source of functional ingredients. The physiological activity of different solvent fractions prepared from ethanol extract of Zizyphus jujuba leaves were analyzed. Xanthine oxidase inhibitory effect was very high in all fractions except chloroform fraction. The very high electron donating ability was observed in the ethylacetate fraction and the effect was similar to 0.1% tocopherol. Nitrite scavenging effect of all fractions was more than 40% even at low concentration of 1mg/ml and was increased with increasing concentration. Angiotensin I converting enzyme inhibitory activity was appeared in ethyl acetate and chloroform fractions only at high concentraton.
Objective : This study was designed to investigate the effects of non fermented Zizyphus. jujuba mixture (mixed fruit and leaf : ZM) and fermented Z. jujuba mixture(FZM) on fed high-fat diet induced hyperlipidemic rats for development medicinal food. Method : The extracts prepared for Zizyphus. jujuba mixture(ZM) and fermented Z. jujuba mixture(FZM) with Lactobacillus plantarum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Experimental group was divided into normal control group(NC group) and high fat diet groups. The high fat diet groups fed high fat diet 2 weeks after was sub-divided into high fat diet control group(HC group), high fat diet positive control group(HPC group), non fermented Z. jujuba mixture extract group(ZM group) and fermented Z. jujuba mixture extract group(FZM group). NC and HC group was orally administerd of 0.9% saline, HPC group administerd lovastatin diluted in 0.9% saline at a dose of 10 mg/kg BW, ZM and FZM groups was administerd each extracts diluted in 0.9% saline at a dose of 300 mg/kg BW once a day on a fixed time for 4 weeks. In the present study we measured organ weight, epididymal fat tissue weight, concentration of serum lipids, hepatic lipids, MDA contents in liver tissue and metabolic variables in serum. Results : ZM and FZM suppressed testis weight loss and FZM decreased epididymal fat tissue weight to level of NC group in high-fat diets. ZM and FZM did not influence on serum cholesterol level, but prominently decreased serum triglyceride concentration compared with HC group, and FZM diminished hepatic triglyceride same as serum. ZM and FZM did not impair liver and kidney function and influence positive effects through by suppression of elevation lipid level. Conclusion : These results suggested that Z. jujuba mixture(ZM, FZM) should be useful developing medicinal food for prevention and improvement of hyperlipidemia and FZM is more suitable agent than ZM.
Zizyphus jujube is a plant in the buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae) that has been the subject of research into antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties of its fruit and seed. However, few studies have investigated its leaves. In this study, the anti-inflammatory activity of ZJL (an extract of Z. jujube leaf) was evaluated to verify its potential as an anti-inflammatory agent and SARS-CoV-2 medicine, using nitric oxide (NO) assay, RT-PCR, SDSPAGE, Western blotting, and UHPLC/TOFHRMS analysis. We found that ZJL suppresed pro-inflammatory mediators such as NO, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 cells. ZJL acted by inhibiting NF-KB and MAPK signaling pathway activity. We also confirmed that ZJL contains a phenol compound and flavonoids with anti-inflammatory activity such as trehalose, maleate, epigallocatechin, hyperoside, catechin, 3-O-coumaroylquinic acid, rhoifolin, gossypin, kaempferol 3-neohesperidoside, rutin, myricitrin, guaiaverin, quercitrin, quercetin, ursolic acid, and pheophorbide a. These findings suggest that ZJL may have great potential for the development of anti-inflammatory drugs and vaccines via inhibition of NF-κB and MAPK signaling in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells.

Background: This study were performed to determine the effect of root pruning of Zizyphus jujuba var. inermis (Bunge) Rehder. Root cutting inhibit vegetative growth and promote reproductive growth as temporarily reducing growth, net assimilation, water potential of leaf and cytokinin level. Methods and Results: The root pruning was treated of the root cutting widths 50, and 80 ㎝ and the root cutting depths 10, and 20 cm. The amount of root pruning and the number of suckers were the highest in the root-pruning treatment at a width of 50 cm and a depth of 20 cm. The blooming time was from June 18 to 20, and no difference was observed in the blooming time among the root-pruning treatments. The number of flowers was rather higher in the root-pruning treatment at a width of 50 cm and a depth of 20 cm and at a width of 80 cm and a depth of 20 cm. The percentage of fruit setting was higher in the plants whose roots were pruned at a depth of 20 cm than in the untreated plants. The fruit size, fruit weight, and sugar content showed no difference among the root-pruning treatments. Conclusions: The results showed that percentage of fruit setting increased with root pruning, while no difference was observed in the growth and fruit quality of plants.
Zizyphus jujube leaf fractions (ZLFs) showed no cytotoxic effects of up to $100{\mu}g/mL$, while the anti-inflammatory effects of ZLFs were analyzed by checking the productions of nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin $E_2$ ($PGE_2$), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and inflammatory cytokines TNF-${\alpha}$, IL-$1{\beta}$, and IL-6 in the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated Raw264.7 macrophage up to the concentration of $100{\mu}g/mL$. ZLFs ($100{\mu}g/mL$) demonstrated a strong anti-inflammatory activity that reduced 61~85% of NO and 71~100% of $PGE_2$ production in the LPS-stimulated Raw264.7 macrophage. Even the low ZLFs concentration of $1{\mu}g/mL$ have reduced NO and $PGE_2$ production by 34~64%. Expressions of COX-2 protein were also effectively inhibited by the ZLFs. Furthermore, the TNF-${\alpha}$, IL-$1{\beta}$, and IL-6 production were significantly suppressed through the treatment of ZLFs at concentrations of 1, 10, and $100{\mu}g/mL$. In the order of the Zizyphus jujube leaf water fraction (ZLWF) < buthanol fraction (ZLBF) < ethyl acetate fraction (ZLEF) showed anti-inflammatory activity. In particular, the ethyl acetate fraction ZLEF at $100{\mu}g/mL$ showed an excellent anti-inflammatory activity by reducing the production of NO, $PGE_2$, COX-2, and inflammatory cytokines (TNF-${\alpha}$, IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-6) in the level of Raw264.7 macrophage without LPS-stimulation or even better. The results of our study suggest the potential of ZLEF for use as an excellent ant-inflammatory inhibiting mediator and may be used as a therapeutic approach to various inflammatory diseases.
Leaf litter is the main and quick source of organic matter and nutrient to the soil compared to other parts of litter. This study focused on the nutrients (N, P and K) leaching from leaf litter of Melia azadirachta, Azadirachta indica, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Swietenia macrophylla, Mangifera indica, Zizyphus jujuba, Litchi chinensis, Albizia saman, Artocarpus heterophyllus, Acacia auriculiformis, Dalbergia sissoo and Khaya anthotheca as the common cropland agroforest tree species of Bangladesh. About (9 to 35) % of initial mass was lost, while Electric Conductivity (EC) and TDS (Total Dissolved Solid) of leaching water increased to (573 to 3,247) ${\mu}S/cm$ and (401 to 2,307) mg/l respectively after 192 hours of leaching process. Mass loss (%) of leaf litter, EC and TDS of leaching water showed significant (ANOVA, p<0.05) curvilinear relationship with leaching time. Initial concentration of NH4, PO4 and K in leaching water was found to increase significantly (p<0.05) up to 48/72 hours and then remained almost constant at later stages (48/72 to 192 hours). Mass loss of leaves; EC, TDS, $NH_4$, $PO_4$ and K in leaching water was varied also significantly (ANOVA, p<0.05) among the studied tree species. All the tree species showed similar pattern of nutrients (K>N>P) release during the leaching process. The highest $NH_4$ (4,097 ppm) and potassium (8,904 ppm) concentration was found for M. azadirachta while the highest $PO_4$ (1,331 ppm) concentration was found for E. camaldulensis in the leaching water. Among the studied tree species, M. azadirachta, A. indica, D. sissoo, E. camaldulensis and Z. jujuba was selected as the best tree species with respect to nutrient leaching.

Background: Recently, jujube (Zizyphus jujuba Mill.) has been attracting attention as a fruit, and its cultivation in rain shelter house is increasing to produce the high quality fresh jujube. This study was carried out to investigate the growth and fruit characteristics of jujube according to the types of rain shelter house. Methods and Results: The characteristics of 5-year-old Bokjo cultivar cultivated in 3 types of rain shelter house, multi span rain shelter house with roof vent (Type I), single span house with a column in the center and roof vent (Type II) and single span house with a column in the center and without roof vent (Type III), and open field were examined. The sprouting and blooming period were different among the types of rain shelter house. The diameter of main stem was higher in rain shelter houses than in the open field. There was no a significant difference in fruit number per leaf stem among the types of cultivation. The incidence of fruit cracking in open field cultivation which was 51.2% was much higher than that in Type I 21.6%, Type II 19.3%, and Type III 25.5%. The fruit size and weight in rain shelter houses, especially in Type III rain shelter house were higher than those in the open field and the soluble solids content of fruit in Type I and Type II was higher than in Type III rain shelter house and the open field. Conclusions: The results show that the growth and fruit quality of jujube were improved by cultivation in rain shelter house, and affected by the types of rain shelter house.

The nutritional components and antioxidative activities of jujube fruit and leaf were investigated and analyzed to provide basic data for functional food materialization and processing. The nitrogen-free extract contents of the fruit and leaf were 71.92% and 41.51%, respectively. The mineral components of the fruit and leaf were rich in Ca (72.14 and 3,252.09 mg/100 g), K (899.82 and 1,708.12 mg/100 g), and P (172.11 and 286.28 mg/100 g), respectively. The major free sugars of the fruit were glucose (13.01 %) and fructose (7.35%); and of the leaf, sucrose (3.94%) and fructose (0.75%). The ascorbic acid contents were higher in fruit (135.73 mg/100 g) than in the leaf (100.43 mg/100 g). The analysis of the component amino acid showed a relatively high ratio of glutamic acid, aspartic acid, proline, and essential amino acids of leucine, but a low methionine and cystine content. The ABTS and FRAP assays indicated that the butanol fraction of the leaf was a more potent radical scavenger and reducing agent than the other five solvent fractions. The butanol fraction of the leaf also presented inhibitory effects against lipid peroxidation in a dose-dependent manner. Therefore, this study verified that the butanol fraction of the leaf has strong antioxidative activities that are correlated with its high level of phenolics, particularly rutin and quercitrin. These phenolics of jujube leaf can be utilized as effective and safe functional food substances, i.e., natural antioxidants.
To select the effective fungicides for the control of leaf spot disease of jujube tree (Zizyphus jujuba) caused by Phoma sp., inhibitory effects of 26 fungicides for mycelial growth were investigated at $250{\mu}g\;a.i./m{\ell}$. In the test, eight fungicides were selected and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for mycelial growth and an inhibitory effect for spore germination were investigated. Among the fungicides, myclobutanil, hexaconazole, and triflumizole were excluded in control effect tests because of their relatively high MICs. MICs were ranged $10-50{\mu}g\;a.i./m{\ell}$ for benomyl, carbendazim + kasugamycin (CK), and thiophanate-methyl. triflumizole (TT), and $50-250{\mu}g\;a.i./m{\ell}$ for iprodione + propineb (IT) and iminoctadine-triacelate (IT). However, benomyl and IP showed very low inhibitory effect on conidial germination. When the fungicides were sprayed on the seedlings before the leaves were inoculated with conidial suspension of Phoma sp., the protective values of CK and TT were around 70% at 1,000 ppm and around 90% at 2,000 ppm. The protective values were around 70% at 2,000 ppm (benomyl), 4,000 ppm (IP), and 8,000 ppm (IT). When the fungicides were sprayed after inoculation, benomyl showed the highest curative values of over 90% at 1,000 ppm and the values of CK and TT ranged $70{\sim}80%$ at 1,000 ppm. However, IP and IT had little or no effect on therapy of the disease. IT caused necrotic phytotoxicity on the leaves of jujube seedlings. As results, the best fungicides for the protection of jujube trees from leaf spot disease were CK (2,000 ppm) and TT (2,000 ppm) and for the remedy of the tree, benomyl (1,000 ppm) was the best. Therefore, alternate application of benomyl and CK or TT will be effective in the disease control.
Recently, abnormal leaf chlorosis has been observed in jujube trees of the major production area in Kyongbuk province. To determine possible causes for the observation, physico-chemical properties of the orchard soil and nutrient contents in the jujube trees were investigated. The chlorosis symptoms were categorized into three types based on the site of chlorosis initiation; leaf center, petiole, and intravein. Of the three, leaf center chlorosis was the most common. The symptom occurred more frequently in Ihyeon, Gyuam, and Geugrag soil series with previous history of apple orchard. In general, the soil and the tree showing leaf chlorosis had lesser nutrient contents than normal except P, Fe, and Zn. In particular, Mg contents in leaf, branchlet, and fruit of the tree were as much as 4 times lesser than those in normal tree; the soil also had 7.8 times lesser Mg contents. The results indicate that the abnormal leaf chlorosis in jujube tree may be caused by nutrient deficiency in soil and could be cured by proper fertilization.
