  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to assess the surface characteristics and the biocompatibility of zirconium (Zr) coating on Ti-6Al-4V alloy surface by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering method. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The zirconium films were developed on Ti-6Al-4V discs using RF magnetron sputtering method. Surface profile, surface composition, surface roughness and surface energy were evaluated. Electrochemical test was performed to evaluate the corrosion behavior. Cell proliferation, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and gene expression of mineralized matrix markers were measured. RESULTS. SEM and EDS analysis showed that zirconium deposition was performed successfully on Ti-6Al-4V alloy substrate. Ti-6Al-4V group and Zr-coating group showed no significant difference in surface roughness (P>.05). Surface energy was significantly higher in Zr-coating group than in Ti-6Al-4V group (P<.05). No difference in cell morphology was observed between Ti-6Al-4V group and Zr-coating group. Cell proliferation was higher in Zr-coating group than Ti-6Al-4V group at 1, 3 and 5 days (P<.05). Zr-coating group showed higher ALP activity level than Ti-6Al-4V group (P<.05). The mRNA expressions of bone sialoprotein (BSP) and osteocalcin (OCN) on Zr-coating group increased approximately 1.2-fold and 2.1-fold respectively, compared to that of Ti-6Al-4V group. CONCLUSION. These results suggest that zirconium coating on Ti-6Al-4V alloy could enhance the early osteoblast responses. This property could make non-toxic metal coatings on Ti-6Al-4V alloy suitable for orthopedic and dental implants.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this work is to evaluate different types of materials used for making implant abutments, by means of an in vitro study and a review of the literature, in order to identify the indications for a better choice of an implant-supported restoration in the anterior section. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 5 implant abutments were tested in a random order in the superior anterior maxilla of pig gingiva (n = 8): titanium dioxide (Nobel Biocare); zirconium dioxide, Standard BO shade (Nobel Biocare, Kloten, Switzerland); zirconium dioxide, Light BI shade (Nobel Biocare); zirconium dioxide, Intense A 3.5 shade (Nobel Biocare); and aluminium oxide. Each abutment was tested for 2 mm and 3 mm thickness. To determine color variation, VITA Easyshade Advance spectrophotometer (Vita Zahnfabrik, Bad Sackingen, Germany) was used. RESULTS. Results showed that the color variation induced by the abutment would be affected by the abutment material and gingival thickness, when the gingival thickness is 2 mm. All materials except zirconium dioxide (Standard shade) caused a visible change of color. Then, as the thickness of the gingiva increased to 3 mm, the color variation was attenuated in a significant manner and became invisible for all types of abutments, except those made of aluminium oxide. CONCLUSION. Zirconium dioxide is the material causing the lowest color variation at 2 mm and at 3 mm, whereas aluminium oxide causes the highest color variation no matter the thickness.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influences of incorporation of zirconium-silicate on diametral tensile strength, shear bond strength to the enamel, and depth of cure of 7 experimental composites. One group contained no filler(group 1 or control group), and the other 6 composites contain 75% filler in which zirconium-silicate(Zr-Si) were 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10% with reduced contents of silica filler, respectively. Both of fillers were treated with 1% silane (${\gamma}$-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxy silane). Light curable monomers were prepared by mixing Bis-GMA and TEGDMA with 3:1 ratio and adding camphoroquinone(CQ) 0.6% with tertiary amine 0.3%. Diametral tensile strengths of specimens with $3mm{\times}6mm$ were measured with Instron (No.4467, USA) with 1mm/min crosshead speed. Shear bond strengths of composites which bonded to bovine enamel etched with 37% phosphoric acid were measured at Instron Testing Machine with as same speed as in diametral tensile strengths. Depth of cure were measured by a method that composite was filled in cylinder mold, illuminated at one side. and uncured composite was removed with acetone, and the residual thickness of composite was measured. Following results were obtained ; 1. Composites containing 0%, 2%, or 4% zirconium-silicate filler(group 2, 3 and 4) showed the statistically higher diametral tensile strength than the others. (p<0.05) 2. Increase of zirconium-silicate filler contents reduced the diametral tensile strength of experimental composites. ($r^2$=0.8721, p=0.0002) 3. Increase of zirconium-silicate filler contents did not affect the shear bond strength of experimental composites. ($r^2$=0.2815, p=0.4067) 4. Increase of zirconium-silicate filler contents reduced significantly the depth of cure of experimental composites. ($r^2$=0.9700, p<0.0001) These results mean that the mechanical properties of composites could not be improved by incorporation of small amount of zirconium-silicate filler. Also, the increased contents of zirconium-silicates fillers was found to reduce the diametral tensile strength and depth of cure.

  • A novel fabrication method for the multi-component metal oxides such as zirconium titanate($Zr_xTi_{1-x}O_2$) has been suggested, which would yield the uniform film characteristics and control the film composition at relatively low process temperature. The method has the basic concept that firstly layer-by-layer structure is constructed with the primitive oxide layers, which are components of the desired multi-component oxides, and secondly the film is annealed at appropriate thermal conditions for the transformation to a single-phase multi-component oxides. In this study, PRTMOCVD(pulsed rapid thermal metalorganic chemical vapor deposition) possessing the superior thickness controllability was introduced to prepare $ZrO_2$ and $TiO_2$ thin film for zirconium titanate. Single-phase zirconium titanate thin films have been prepared successfully by the interdiffusion of oxide multilayers having several alternating layers of $ZrO_2$ and $TiO_2$. The Zr/Ti ratio of zirconium titanate could be controlled easily by altering the thickness of $ZrO_2$ and $TiO_2$ thin film.

  • Zirconium potassium perchlorate(ZPP) is an igniter composed of potassium perchlorate as an oxidizing agent and zirconium as a fuel with a Viton binder. ZPP has been used to provide an ignition source in the aerospace, propulsion, and automotive industries. This study investigates the manufacturing process and characteristics of ZPP, such performance and shape/calorimetry/pressure characteristics with respect to pyrotechnic mechanical device(PMD). During the production of ZPP, the mixing process was designed to produce uniform particle size and shape by mixing the raw materials at high speed.

  • Zirconium alloys are widely used in nuclear reactors as structural materials. During the operation, they are exposed to fast neutrons. Ion irradiation is used to simulate the damage introduced by neutron irradiation. In this article, we briefly review the neutron irradiation damage of zirconium alloys, then summarize the effect of ion irradiation on microstructural evolution, mechanical and corrosion properties, and their relationships. The microstructure components consist of dislocation loops, second phase precipitates, and gas bubbles. The microstructure parameters are also included such as domain size and microstrain determined by X-ray diffraction and the S-parameter determined by positron annihilation. Understanding the relationships of microstructure and properties is necessary for developing new advanced materials with higher irradiation tolerance.
