Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the flexural strength and surface microstructure of the zirconia crown according to the number of glazing zirconia prostheses. Methods: The specimens were made as follows. A specimen without glazing: 1ea, first glazed specimens (group B): 10ea, second glazed specimens (group C): 10ea, third glazed specimens (group D): 10ea. Three-point measuring strength equipment and electron microscopes were used for strength measurement and microstructure observation. As for statistical analysis, one-way ANOVA and t-test (level of significance level=5%) were used to determine the difference in the change in flexural strength according to the number of glazing zirconia prostheses. Results: ANOVA analysis of groups B (1st glazing), C (2nd glazing), and D (3rd glazing) revealed that the change in strength between the groups is statistically significant (p=0.023). The Mann-Whitney test for each group revealed that the difference in flexural strength between groups B and C was not statistically significant (z=-0.302, p=0.762) while that between groups C and D was statistically significant (z=-0.257, p=0.01). Microstructure observation revealed 3 changes in the microstructure of the surface of the glaze powder were observed. Conclusion: According to the number of glazing zirconia prostheses, it was found that the difference in strength between groups was statistically significant, and changes in the microstructure were observed.

The sliding wear behavior of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) was examined on a novel low temperature degradation-free zirconia/alumina composite material and conventional alumina and zirconia ceramics used for femoral head in total hip joint replacement. The wear of UHMWPE pins against these ceramic disks was evaluated by performing linear reciprocal sliding and repeat pass rotational sliding tests for one million cycles in bovine serum. The weight loss of polyethylene against the novel low temperature degradation-free zirconia/alumina composite disks was much less than those against conventional ceramics for all tests. The mean weight loss of the polyethylene pins was more io the linear reciprocal sliding test than in the repeal pass rotational sliding lest for all kinds of disk materials. Neither the coherent transfer film nor the surface damage was observed on the surface of the novel zirconia/alumina composite disks during the test. The observed r,'stilts indicated that the wear of the polyethylene was closely related to contacting materials and kinematic motions. In conclusion, the novel zirconia/alumina composite leads the least wear of polyethylene among the tested ceramics and demonstrates the potential as lhe alternative materials for femoral head in total hip joint replacement.
Objectives: This study evaluated the effects of different surface conditioning methods on the bond strength of orthodontic brackets to glazed full-zirconia surfaces. Materials and Methods: Glazed zirconia (except for the control, Zirkonzahn Prettau) disc surfaces were pre-treated: PO (control), polishing; BR, bur roughening; PP, cleaning with a prophy cup and pumice; HF, hydrofluoric acid etching; AA, air abrasion with aluminum oxide; CJ, CoJet-Sand. The surfaces were examined using profilometry, scanning electron microscopy, and electron dispersive spectroscopy. A zirconia primer (Z-Prime Plus, Z) or a silane primer (Monobond-S, S) was then applied to the surfaces, yielding 7 groups (PO-Z, BR-Z, PP-S, HF-S, AA-S, AA-Z, and CJ-S). Metal bracket-bonded specimens were stored in water for 24 hr at $37^{\circ}C$, and thermocycled for 1,000 cycles. Their bond strengths were measured using the wire loop method (n = 10). Results: Except for BR, the surface pre-treatments failed to expose the zirconia substructure. A significant difference in bond strengths was found between AA-Z ($4.60{\pm}1.08MPa$) and all other groups ($13.38{\pm}2.57-15.78{\pm}2.39MPa$, p < 0.05). For AA-Z, most of the adhesive remained on the bracket. Conclusions: For bracket bonding to glazed zirconia, a simple application of silane to the cleaned surface is recommended. A zirconia primer should be used only when the zirconia substructure is definitely exposed.

PURPOSE. The purpose of this in vitro study is to examine the effects of a nano-structured alumina coating on the adhesion between resin cements and zirconia ceramics using a four-point bending test. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 100 pairs of zirconium bar specimens were prepared with dimensions of $25mm{\times}2mm{\times}5mm$ and cementation surfaces of $5mm{\times}2mm$. The samples were divided into 5 groups of 20 pairs each. The groups are as follows: Group I (C) - Control with no surface modification, Group II (APA) - airborne-particle-abrasion with $110{\mu}m$ high-purity aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$) particles, Group III (ROC) - airborne-particle-abrasion with $110{\mu}m$ silica modified aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3+SiO_2$) particles, Group IV (TCS) - tribochemical silica coated with $Al_2O_3$ particles, and Group V (AlC) - nano alumina coating. The surface modifications were assessed on two samples selected from each group by atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The samples were cemented with two different self-adhesive resin cements. The bending bond strength was evaluated by mechanical testing. RESULTS. According to the ANOVA results, surface treatments, different cement types, and their interactions were statistically significant (P<.05). The highest flexural bond strengths were obtained in nano-structured alumina coated zirconia surfaces (50.4 MPa) and the lowest values were obtained in the control group (12.00 MPa), both of which were cemented using a self-adhesive resin cement. CONCLUSION. The surface modifications tested in the current study affected the surface roughness and flexural bond strength of zirconia. The nano alumina coating method significantly increased the flexural bond strength of zirconia ceramics.

PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of occlusal adjustments on the surface roughness of yttria-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) and wear of opposing artificial enamel. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Twenty-five Y-TZP slabs from each brand (Lava, 3M and Bruxzir, Glidewell Laboratories) with different surface conditions (Control polished - CPZ; Polished/ground - GRZ; Polished/ground/repolished - RPZ; Glazed - GZ; Porcelain-veneered - PVZ; n=5) were abraded (500,000 cycles, 80 N) against artificial enamel (6 mm diameter steatite). Y-TZP roughness (in ${\mu}m$) before and after chewing simulation (CS) and antagonist steatite volume loss (in $mm^3$) were evaluated using a contact surface profilometer. Y-TZP roughness was analyzed by three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and steatite wear by two-way ANOVA and Tukey Honest Difference (HSD) (P=.05). RESULTS. There was no effect of Y-TZP brand on surface roughness (P=.216) and steatite loss (P=.064). A significant interaction effect (P<.001) between surface condition and CS on Y-TZP roughness was observed. GZ specimens showed higher roughness after CS (before CS - $3.7{\pm}1.8{\mu}m$; after CS - $13.54{\pm}3.11{\mu}m$), with partial removal of the glaze layer. Indenters abraded against CPZ ($0.09{\pm}0.03mm^3$) were worn more than those abraded against PVZ ($0.02{\pm}0.01mm^3$) and GZ ($0.02{\pm}0.01mm^3$). Higher wear caused by direct abrasion against zirconia was confirmed by SEM. CONCLUSION. Polishing with an intraoral polishing system did not reduce the roughness of zirconia. Wear of the opposing artificial enamel was affected by the material on the surface rather than the finishing technique applied, indicating that polished zirconia is more deleterious to artificial enamel than are glazed and porcelain-veneered restorations.
PURPOSE. This in-vitro analysis aimed to compare the intaglio trueness, the antagonist's wear volume loss, and fracture load of various single-unit zirconia prostheses fabricated by different manufacturing techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Zirconia crowns were prepared into four different groups (n = 14 per group) according to the manufacturing techniques and generations of the materials. The intaglio surface trueness (root-mean-square estimates, RMS) of the crown was measured at the marginal, axial, occlusal, and inner surface areas. Half of the specimens were artificially aged in the chewing simulator with 120,000 cycles, and the antagonist's volume loss after aging was calculated. The fracture load for each crown group was measured before and after hydrothermal aging. The intaglio trueness was evaluated with Welch's ANOVA and the antagonist's volume loss was assessed by the Kruskal-Wallis tests. The effects of manufacturing and aging on the fracture resistance of the tested zirconia crowns were determined by two-way ANOVA. RESULTS. The trueness analysis of the crown intaglio surfaces showed surface deviation (RMS) within 50 ㎛, regardless of the manufacturing methods (P = .053). After simulated mastication, no significant differences in the volume loss of the antagonists were observed among the zirconia groups (P = .946). The manufacturing methods and simulated chewing had statistically significant effects on the fracture resistance (P < .001). CONCLUSION. The intaglio surface trueness, fracture resistance, and antagonist's wear volume of the additively manufactured 3Y-TZP crown were clinically acceptable, as compared with those of the 4Y- or 5Y-PSZ crowns produced by subtractive milling.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate effect of zirconia on osseointegration and Surface appearance by surface treatments using various acid solution. Materials and Methods: The prepared zirconia disks were treated with hydrofluoric acid solution and photo-assisted etching under various condition. The surface was analyzed by SEM and the surface roughness was analyzed by using surface profiler. The osteogenic effect of MC3T3-E1 cells was assessed via fluorescent staining observation and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results: Various roughness were obtained according to the surface treatment method. The surface roughness increased in the group treated with hydrofluoric acid solution, but that had week network structure. In the method using photo-assisted etching, the surface roughness increased in micro units. Cell reaction showed better results in the photo-assisted etching group than in the hydrofluoric acid-treated group (P < 0.05). And it showed even osteoblastic cell distribution in photo-assisted etching group. Conclusion: As a result, the photo-assisted etching method is more effective than the simple acid solution treatment for zirconia treatment for osseointegration.

Chromium oxide/zirconia catalysts were prepared by dry impregnation of powdered $Zr(OH)_4$ with ($NH_4$)$_2$CrO$_4$aqueous solution. The characterization of prepared catalysts was performed using FTIR, XPS, XRD and DTA methods, and by the measurement of surface area. The addition of chromium oxide to zirconia shifted the transitions of $ZrO_2$ from amorphous to tetragonal phase and from tetragonal to monoclinic phase to higher temperature due to the strong interaction between chromium oxide and zirconia, and the specific surface area of catalysts increased in proportion to the chromium oxide content. Since the $ZrO_2$ stabilizes supported chromium oxide, chromium oxide was well dispersed on the surface of zirconia, and ${\alpha}$-$Cr_2O_3$ was observed only at the calcination temperature above 1173 K. Upon the addition of only small amount of chromium oxide (1 wt% Cr) to $ZrO_2$, both the acidity and acid strength of catalyst increased remarkably, showing the presence of two kinds of acid sites on the surface of $CrO_x$/$ZrO_4$-Bronsted and Lewis.
Purpose: This study was to observe the surface and interfacial characteristic of Zirconia by surface treatment. And it was observed the roughness and contact angle according to processing, and the interfacial properties by surface treatment on zirconia. Methods: The oxide formation and ion diffusion between core and veneer ceramic were determined by the X-ray Dot Mapping of EPMA(Electron probe micro analyzer). The roughness was measured by 3D Digital microscope and the contact angle according to processing of zirconia was observed using distilled water on the surface. Results: The surface roughness of the specimens Z04, Z12, Z15 was measured $0.67({\pm}0.03){\mu}m$, $0.50({\pm}0.12){\mu}m$, $0.35({\pm}0.09){\mu}m$, respectively. As results of contact angle test, Z04, Z12, Z15 of specimen group without binder treatment was measured $46.79({\pm}3.17)^{\circ}$, $57.47({\pm}4.83)^{\circ}$, $56.19({\pm}2.66)^{\circ}$, respectively. but, L04, L12, L15 of specimen group without binder treatment was measured $63.84({\pm}2.20)^{\circ}$, $66.08({\pm}0.16)^{\circ}$, $65.10({\pm}1.01)^{\circ}$, respectively. Average contact angle of L15 was measured $65.10({\pm}1.01)^{\circ}$. In X-ray Dot Mapping results, thickness of binder including Al element was measured that each of L04, L12, L15 were $20{\mu}m$, $15{\mu}m$, $10{\mu}m$. Conclusion: The more rough surface increases the wettability, but the sintered exclusive binder decreases the wettability.

Purpose: It is to compare and evaluate the change of the wear rate and phase variation of the Zirconia before and after the sintering after the grinding by a high speed equipment manufactured for the Zirconia. Methods: The specimen of the sintered Zirconia was manufactured as size of $15mm{\times}15mm{\times}2mm$. The grinding has been applied to each of all pieces of each test groups for a minute fit for each condition at same speed of 50,000 rpm by a diamond bur at high speed handpiece with injection of the air and water. For the observation of the surface before and after the sintering of the each test piece, the cross section of it was observed as 100 magnification by a scanning electron microscope after it was coated by PT, and the diffraction analysis was performed by XDR to compare the crystal phase of the Zirconia. The average surface roughness value of all specimens were evaluated. The wear test was performed at room temperature by applying a load of 1kg for 120,000 cycles for the chewing period 6 months. Wear was analyzed for the enamel cusps by measurement of the vertical substance loss with a laser scanner. Conclusion: The phase variation from the tetragonal phase to the monoclinic phase was confirmed in the test group of the pre-sintered Zirconia after the grinding, and the value of the surface roughness and the wear rate was increased in experimental group.
