  • Biotribological properties, such as wear rate and friction coefficient, of 3Y-TZP and Low Temperature Degradation (LTD) free materials were investigated via a ball(SiC)-on-plate sliding wear test to evaluate the relationship between wear mechanism and phase transformation. Wear test was conducted with a sliding speed of 0.035 m/s at room temperature and at 25$0^{\circ}C$ in air under a normal load of 49 N, respectively. Although friction coefficient of 3Y-TZP was the lowest due to the fine grain size, the highest wear loss and rate were observed due to the debris of monoclinic grains introduced during sliding and their values increased drastically with raising temperature. However, the biotribological properties of LTD-free materials were insensitive to temperature due to the inertness of the phase transformation, suggesting that they may be applicable to the biomechanical parts.

  • In order to fabricate 8YSZ thick film by silk screen printing, YSZ(yttria-stabilized zirconia) commercial powder was used as starting materials. Paste for screen printing was made by mixing 8YSZ powder and organic vehicles. 8YSZ thick film was formed on $Al_2O_3$ substrate. The crystal structure, and microstructure were investigated. Grain size of 8YSZ was increased with increasing calcination temperature and rapid grain growth was shown after calcination at $1300^{\circ}C$. Microstructure showed the mixture of large and small grain size after $1400^{\circ}C$ sintering. Shrinkage rate of 8YSZ thick film sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ was more than 40%.

  • Among various fuel cells, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) offer the highest energy efficiency, when taking into account the thermal recycling of waste heat at high temperature. However, the highest efficiency and lowest pollution for a SOFC can be achieved through the sophisticated control of its constituent components such as electrodes, electrolytes, interconnects and sealing materials. The electrochemical conversion efficiency of a SOFC is particularly dependent upon the performance of its electrode materials. The electrode materials should meet highly stringent requirements to optimize cell performance. In particular, both mass and charge transport should easily occur simultaneously through the electrode structure. Matter transport or charge transport is critically related to the configuration and spatial disposition of the three constituent phases of a composite electrode, which are the ionic conducting phase, electronic conducting phase, and the pores. The current work places special emphasis on the quantification of this complex microstructure of composite electrodes. Digitized images are exploited in order to obtain the quantitative microstructural information, i.e., the size distributions and interconnectivities of each constituent component. This work reports regarding zirconia-based composite electrodes.

  • The microstructures and mechanical properties of Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystals (TZP) sintered bodies, which made by pressureless and spark plasma sintering techniques, were investigated using XRD, SEM, and TEM techniques. In the spark plasma sintered samples, the TZP grains were equiaxed type including many sub-grain boundaries regardless of sintering conditions. The biaxial strength of TZP having an average of 80 nm grains in diameter was high in value with 1025 MPa, but fracture toughness showed a low value due to the absence of a fracture toughening mechanism such as transformation toughening. In the Pressureless Sintered (PLSed) samples, the grain size of TZP was strongly dependent on the sintering temperature; i.e., it gradually increased as the sintering temperature increased. The value of fracture toughness increased as the grain size increased by the stress-induced phase transformation and Borne crack deflection.

  • The mechanical properties and damage mode of {{{{ {Y}_{2 } {O}_{3} }}-doped tetragonal (Y-TZP) can-didated as biomaterials were performed under indentation stress-strain curve critical load for yield and cracking strength degradation and fatigue behavior with Hertzian indentation tests. This material shows the brittle behavior which is confirmed by indentation stress-strain response. The critical load for cracking(Pc) is much higher than that for yields (Py) indicating crack resistance Strength were strongly dependant on contact area and there were no degradation when the indenter size was ${\gamma}$=3.18 mm suggesting that Y-TZP should be highly damage tolerant to the blunt contacts. Multi-cycle contact were found to be innocuous up to {{{{ {10 }^{6 } }} cycles at 500N and {{{{ {10 }^{5 } }} cycles at 1000N in water. On the other hand contacts at {{{{ {10 }^{6 } }} cycles at 1000 N in water did show some signs of incipient degradation. By contrast contacts with Vickers indenter pro-duced substantial strength losses at much lower loads suggesting that the mechanical integrity of this ma-terial would be compromised by inadvertent sharp contacts.

  • In this study, the effects of small amounts (${\leq}3\;mol%$) of Li doping on the sintering characteristics and electrochemical performance of $(ZrO_2)_{0.89}(ScO_{1.5})_{0.1}(CeO_2)_{0.01}$ (ScSZ) were investigated. By adding 3 mol% lithium, the densification temperature of ScSZ was reduced from the conventional temperature of $1400^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$. It was found that Li doping also led to changes in the Zr:Sc ratio at the grain boundaries. Correspondingly, the dispersion of lithium zirconia at the grain boundaries accelerated the growth of ScSZ grains and increased the grain boundary resistance at temperatures below $450^{\circ}C$. At elevated temperatures of $450{\sim}750^{\circ}C$, the electrical conductivity of the ScSZ after doping remained almost unchanged under air and reducing atmospheres. These results suggest that the addition of lithium is promising for use in low temperature co-firing of ScSZ-based components for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells.

  • Although there are many different ways that restorations can be made, it can be said that the biocompatibility of abutment and crown is very important in this experiment. When placed in the actual oral cavity, the differences were obvious. Compared to In-ceram Aluminium, the structure that is obtained after firing reveals a particularly homogeneous distribution of the crystal and glass phase. The In-ceram aluminium system had many problems, such as having weak tensile strength, and having low bonding strength due to the shrinking that occurs after firing. Because of the opaque finish of the metal frame, the two may look similar from the outside, but it is evident that there are differences between using a metal frame and In-ceram. VITA VM9 has been designed as a special ceramic featuring a fine structure or stabilized Zro2 substructures, and so the VITA VM9 excels in its light refraction and reflection behavior, which is similar to natural teeth. It also has outstanding chemical balance, which presents advantages such as considerably reduced accumulation of plaque on the ceramic surface.? This ultimately results in easier care and cleaning for the patient.

  • A composite cathode of LSCF$(La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_3)\;and\;GDC\; (Gd_2O_3-doped\;CeO_2:Ce_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}O_{1.95_})$ was characterized in terms of an electrode response, using a point contact in an Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte incorporated into AC two-point impedance spectroscopy. The point-contacted configuration amplifies the responses occurring near the YSZ/cathode interface through the aligned point contact on the planar LSCF/GDC electrode. The point contact interface increases the bulk resistance allowing the estimation of the point contact geometry and resolving the electrode-related responses. The resultant impedance spectra are analyzed through an equivalent circuit model constructed by resistors and constant phase elements. The bulk responses can be resolved from the electrode-related portions in terms of spreading resistance. The electrode-related polarizations are measured in terms of temperature and oxygen partial pressure. The modified impedance spectroscopy is discussed in terms of methodology and analytical aspects, toward resolving the electrode-polarization issues in solid oxide fuel cells.

  • The attrition-milled powder mixtures of Al and Al2O3 were oxidized below 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr and post-sintered at 150$0^{\circ}C$ and 1$600^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr. During attrition milling, ZrO2 was added to the system by grinding effect of ZrO2 balls. The average particle size of the powder mixtures was decreased by the attrition milling as the aluminum content decrease. Above 120$0^{\circ}C$, sintering behaviro was observed on the fine Al2O3 particles resulted from the oxidation of Al. The specimens heat-treated at 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr showed the bending strength of 166 MPa and hardness of 220 MPa. The specimens post-sintered at 1$600^{\circ}C$ for 2hr had a linear shrinkage of 9~12% and a relative density of about 95%. After the post-sintering, the specimens having 55 vol% Al content revealed the bending strength of 513 MPa and hardness of 718 MPa. The Weibull modulus to the bending strength was about 16.

  • Co-planar type single chamber solid oxide fuel cell with patterned electrode on a surface of electrolyte has been fabricated by robo-dispensing method and microfluidic lithography. The cells were composed of NiO-GDC-Pd or NiO-SDC cermet anode, $(La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3})_{0.95}MnO_3$ cathode, and yttria stablized zirconia electrolyte. The cell performance at $900^{\circ}C$ was investigated as a function of electrode geometries, such as anode-to-cathode distance, numbers of electrode pairs. Relationship between OCV and I-V characteristics at the optimized operation condition was also studied by DC source meter under the mixed gas condition of methane, air, and nitrogen. An increase of anode-facing-cathode area leads to lower OCV due to intermixing between product gases of anode and cathode, which in turn decreases the oxygen partial pressure difference.
