Zirconia powders with nano size pores and high specific surface areas were synthesized via aqueous precipitation and hydrothermal synthetic method using $ZrOCl_28H_2O$ and $NH_4OH$ under pH=11 and ambient condition. By this reaction. zirconia hydrate $(ZrO_x(OH)_{4-2x})$ was primarily synthesized and the obtained zirconia hydrate was heat treated hydrothermally using an autoclave at various temperatures under pH=11. X-ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy, Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, FT-IR, Raman, Particle size analysis, DTA-TG, and BET techniques were used for the characterization of the powder. The synthesized zirconia showed an amorphous phase, however, the phase was transformed to the crystalline state during the hydrothermal process. The observed crystalline phase above $160^{\circ}C$ was a mixed phase of monoclinic and tetragonal zirconia. By the BET analysis, it was found that the specific surface area was ranged in $126{\sim}276m^2/g$ and the zirconia had the cylindrical shaped pores with average diameter of $2{\sim}7nm$.
Novel ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/zirconia composites were previously prepared by the in situ polymerization of ethylene using a Ti-based Ziegler-Natta catalyst supported on to the surface of zirconia, as a bearing material for artificial joints. Tribological tests revealed that a uniform dispersion of zirconia in UHMWPE markedly increased the wear resistance. The effects of zirconia content on the oxidation behavior of the ${\gamma}$-ray-treated UHMWPE/zirconia composite surfaces were examined. The oxidation index that estimates the oxidation degree as the content of total carbonyl compounds was monitored using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance. The changes in the surface composition due to the oxidation were confirmed by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. The extent of oxidation decreased with increasing zirconia content, which was attributed to the increased crystallinity as well as the decreased polymer portion of the UHMWPE/zirconia composites.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of two coloring liquids (aqueous and acid-based coloring liquids) and the position of multilayered zirconia on the flexural strength of multilayered zirconia. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The multilayered zirconia specimens were divided into upper and lower positions. The specimens were divided into three subgroups (n=10): non-shaded, acid-based coloring liquid, and aqueous coloring liquid. The specimens were cut using a milling machine and were immersed in either a acid-based coloring liquid or aqueous coloring liquid 2 times for 5 seconds. The specimens were sintered in a sintering furnace according to the manufacturer's introduction. The flexural strength of the specimen was measured using a universal testing machine and the surface of the specimen was observed using a field emission scanning electron microscope. RESULTS. The flexural strength of multilayered zirconia was 400 - 500 MPa. There was no statistically significant difference among all groups (P>.05).The flexural strength of the multilayered zirconia was not influenced by the kind of coloring liquid used (P>.05). The flexural strength of the multilayered zirconia colored with the coloring liquids was not influenced by its position (P>.05). CONCLUSION. The different coloring liquid application did not affect the flexural strength of multilayered zirconia of all positions.
PURPOSE. To evaluate the metameric disparities among monolithic zirconia materials with differing yttrium compositions across various lighting conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Thirty-six square-shaped zirconia samples measuring 10 × 10 × 0.5 mm were prepared from monolithic zirconia materials with three different yttrium contents. A 0.2 mm thick layer of polymerized dual-polymerizable self-adhesive resin cement was created using a silicone mold with the same dimensions as the prepared zirconia specimens. To evaluate metamerism, color measurements were conducted using a spectrophotometer device on a neutral gray background in a color measurement cabinet that offers four different illumination environments. All samples underwent aging by subjecting them to 10000 thermal cycles using a thermal cycle tester. Following thermal aging, color measurements were taken once more, and the data were recorded using the CIE L*, a*, b* color system. Two-way ANOVA and Post-hoc Bonferroni tests were employed to analyze the data. RESULTS. It was observed that there was no statistical difference among the color measurements made in different illumination environments of the monolithic zirconia ceramics used to evaluate metamerism (P > .05). This observation remained consistent both before and after thermal aging. After thermal aging, the color of monolithic zirconia materials exhibited a tendency towards red and yellow hues, accompanied by a decrease in brightness levels. CONCLUSION. It can be stated that different illumination conditions did not affect the metamerism of monolithic zirconia materials, but there was a color change in monolithic zirconia materials after a thermal aging period equivalent to one year.
PURPOSE. This study compared the effect of three intraoral repair systems on the bond strength between composite resin and zirconia core. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Thirty zirconia specimens were divided into three groups according to the repair method: Group I-CoJet$^{TM}$ Repair System (3M ESPE) [chairside silica coating with $30{\mu}m$$SiO_2$ + silanization + adhesive]; Group II-Ceramic Repair System (Ivoclar Vivadent) [etching with 37% phosphoric acid + Zirconia primer + adhesive]; Group III-Signum Zirconia Bond (Heraus) [Signum Zirconia Bond I + Signum Zirconia Bond II]. Composite resin was polymerized on each conditioned specimen. The shear bond strength was tested using a universal testing machine, and fracture sites were examined with FE-SEM. Surface morphology and wettability after surface treatments were examined additionally. The data of bond strengths were statistically analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tamhane post hoc test (${\alpha}$=.05). RESULTS. Increased surface roughness and the highest wettability value were observed in the CoJet sand treated specimens. The specimens treated with 37% phosphoric acid and Signum Zirconia Bond I did not show any improvement of surface irregularity, and the lowest wettability value were found in 37% phosphoric acid treated specimens. There was no significant difference in the bond strengths between Group I ($7.80{\pm}0.76$ MPa) and III ($8.98{\pm}1.39$ MPa). Group II ($3.21{\pm}0.78$ MPa) showed a significant difference from other groups (P<.05). CONCLUSION. The use of Intraoral silica coating system and the application of Signum Zirconia Bond are effective for increasing the bond strength of composite resin to zirconia.
Purpose: This investigation was designed to estimate the flexure strength, density, and microstructure of the colored and uncolored zirconia oxide ceramics for fixed partial denture. Material and Methods: LAVATM All Ceramic(3M-ESPE, USA), Cercon Smart Ceramic(Dentsply, USA), and Z-match Ceramic(DentAim, Korea) were used for this study. All specimen was fabricated by ASTM C1161. After preparing $25{\times}2{\times}1.5mm$ of rectangular column and sitting rectangular column on universal test machine (UTM), external supporting point distance is 20.0 mm, internal supporting point distance is 10.0 mm. Specimen was loaded with 0.2 mm/min of cross head speed until fracture and at the time of broken of specimen, measuring loading value with PC software. Results: The results were obtained as follows: 1. Flexure strength of uncolored zirconia was higher than that of colored zirconia. 2. In uncolored zirconia, flexure strength of LAVATM Ceramic was more higher than the other ceramics, and it showed statistical difference between LAVATM Ceramic and Cercon Smart Ceramic (P<0.05). 3. In colored zirconia, flexure strength of LAVATM Ceramic was more higher than the other ceramics too, but they did not show statistical difference (p>0.05). 4. In Weibull analysis, Characterastic strength was showed highest value to uncolored LAVATM Ceramic and lowest value to Z-match ceramic, and Weibull modulus(m) of uncolored zirconia was higher than that of colored zirconia. 5. In XRD analysis, all group except Z-match showed high peak of t-ZrO2 but they did not show m-ZrO2. Colored zirconia group showed lower peak of t-ZrO2 than that of uncolored zirconia group.
PURPOSE. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of abutment shade, ceramic thickness, and coping type on the final shade of zirconia all-ceramic restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three different types of disk-shaped zirconia coping specimens (Lava, Cercon, Zirkonzahn: ${\phi}10mm{\times}0.4mm$) were fabricated and veneered with IPS e.max Press Ceram (shade A2), for total thicknesses of 1 and 1.5 mm. A total of sixty zirconia restoration specimens were divided into six groups based on their coping types and thicknesses. The abutment specimens (${\phi}10mm{\times}7mm$) were prepared with gold alloy, base metal (nickel-chromium) alloy, and four different shades (A1, A2, A3, A4) of composite resins. The average $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ values of the zirconia specimens on the six abutment specimens were measured with a dental colorimeter, and the statistical significance in the effects of three variables was analyzed by using repeated measures analysis of variance (${\alpha}$=.05).The average shade difference (${\Delta}E$) values of the zirconia specimens between the A2 composite resin abutment and other abutments were also evaluated. RESULTS. The effects of zirconia specimen thickness (P<.001), abutment shade (P<.001), and type of zirconia copings (P<.003) on the final shade of the zirconia restorations were significant. The average ${\Delta}E$ value of Lava specimens (1 mm) between the A2 composite resin and gold alloy abutments was higher (close to the acceptability threshold of 5.5 ${\Delta}E$) than th ose between the A2 composite resin and other abutments. CONCLUSION. This in-vitro study demonstrated that abutment shade, ceramic thickness, and coping type affected the resulting shade of zirconia restorations.
Zirconia thin films of uniform structure were fabricated by plasma-enhanced metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. Deposition conditions such as substrate temperature were observed to have much influence on the formation of zirconia films, therefore the mechanism of decomposition of $Zr[TMHD]_4$precursor and film growth were examined by XRD, FT-IR etc., as well as the determination of the optimal deposition condition. From temperature dependence on zirconia, below the deposition temperature of 523K, the amorphous zirconia was formed while the crystalline of zirconia with preferred orientation of cubic (200) was obtained above the temperature. Deposits at low temperatures were investigated by FT-IR and the absorption band of films revealed that the zirconia thin film was in amorphous structure and has the same organic band as that of Zr precursor. In case of high temperature, it was found that Zr precursor was completely decomposed and crystalline zirconia was obtained. In addition, at 623K the higher RF power yielded the increased crystallinity of zirconia implying an increase in decomposition rate of precursor. However, it seems that RF power has nothing with the zirconia deposition process at 773K. It was found that the proper bubbler temperature of TEX>$Zr[TMHD]<_4$ precursor is needed along with high flow rate of carrier gas. Through AFM analysis it was determined that the growth mechanism of the zirconia thin film showed island model.
PURPOSE. Translucency and colour stability are two most important aspects for an aesthetic dental restoration. Glass ceramic restorations are popular amongst clinicians because of their superior aesthetic properties. In the last decade, zirconia has generated tremendous interest due to its favorable mechanical and biological properties. However, zirconia lacks the translucency that lithium disilicate materials possess and therefore has limitations in its use, especially in esthetically demanding situations. There has been a great thrust in research towards developing translucent zirconia materials for dental restorations. The objective of the study was to evaluate and compare the transmittance of a translucent variant of zirconia to lithium disilicate. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two commercially available zirconia materials (conventional and high translucency) and 2 lithium disilicate materials (conventional and high translucency) with standardized dimensions were fabricated. Transmittance values were measured for all samples followed by a microstructural analysis using a finite element scanning electron microscope. One way analysis of variance combined with a Tukey-post hoc test was used to analyze the data obtained (P=.05). RESULTS. High translucency lithium disilicate showed highest transmittance of all materials studied, followed by conventional lithium disilicate, high translucency zirconia and conventional zirconia. The difference between all groups of materials was statistically significant. The transmittance of the different materials correlated to their microstructure analysis. CONCLUSION. Despite manufacturers' efforts to make zirconia significantly more translucent, the transmittance values of these materials still do not match conventional lithium disilicate. More research is required on zirconia towards making the material more translucent for its potential use as esthetic monolithic restoration.
