Purpose: Waste parts of zirconia blocks and powders were remained after CAD/CAM process. In order to make these residual zirconia fit for practical use, zirconia single cores were produced by drain casting process. Methods: Remained zirconia blocks were reduced to powders with zirconia mortar, and screened with 180 mesh sieve. Zirconia slip was prepared from waste parts of zirconia by ball milling. Plaster molds for forming cores by slip casting were also prepared. Formed cores were removed from mold after partial drying. Dried cores were biscuit fired at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 1hour. Biscuit fired cores were treated with tools to control the fitness and thickness. Finished cores were $2^{nd}$ fired at $1,500^{\circ}C$ for 1hour. Microstructure of cross section of core was observed by SEM. Results: When mill pot was filled with 100g of zirconia and alumina mixed powder, 300g of zirconia ball, and 180g of distilled water, the optimum slip for drain casting was obtained. Gypsum plaster for ceramic forming was more suitable then yellow stone plaster for casting process. SEM photograph showed the microstructure of fully dense with uniform grain size of zirconia and well dispersed alumina grains into the zirconia matrix. Conclusion: Zirconia single cores were produced by drain casting process. Drain casting is useful process to make these residual zirconia fit for practical use. Further study will be focused on the preparation of the bridge type cores by casting.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of hydrofluoric acid etching treatment on the bonding strength of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal(Y-TZP). Four groups of zirconia-resin cement specimens were prepared; 1) ZGS group (zirconia, no treatment), 2) ZGSH group (zirconia, hydrofluoric acid etching treatment) 3) H-ZGS group (Hybrid zirconia, no treatment) 4) H-ZGSH group (Hybrid zirconia, hydrofluoric acid etching treatment). The shear bond strength between zirconia and porcelain was measured using a Instron Universal Testing Machine(Model DBBP-500, Instron Corporation, Kyonggi, Korea). Data were statistically analyzed using independent t-test and two-way ANOVA(${\alpha}=0.05$). The ceramic-resin cement bonding strength was affected by hydrofluoric acid etching treatment(p<0.05). Digital microscope examination of the fracture surface showed mixed failures with adhesive and cohesive types in hydrofluoric acid etching treatment with treated zirconia and hybrid zirconia groups.
Purpose: The aim of this research was to evaluate the influence of different surface treatments on the shear bond strength of zirconia ceramic to composite resin. Methods: Seventy two cylinder-shape (diameter: 5 mm; height: 12 mm) blocks of experimental industrially manufactured Y-TZP ceramic were abraded with $125{\mu}m\;Al_2O_3$ particles and randomly divided into 4 groups. All the materials were categorized as group Gc(control group - composite resin veneering on zirconia surface), Gr - composite resin veneering after surface treatment of Rocatec system (3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany) group; Gz - composite resin veneering after surface treatment of Zirconia primer (Z-primer, Bisco, U.S.A) group; Gm - composite resin veneering after surface treatment of zirconia primer (Monobond plus, ivoclar vivadent AG, Liechtenstein) group. Two different zirconia primers and Rocatec system were used to zirconia cylinders (n=16) onto the zirconia surface. Zirconia specimens, polished and roughened, were pretreated and composite bilayer cylinders bonded using conventional adhesive techniques. Results: Shear bond strengths were analyzed using single-factor ANOVA(p<0.05). Bond strength values achieved after airbone particle abrasion and zirconia surface pre-treatments(p<0.05). Conclusion: Shear bond strength tests denmonstrated that zirconia primer is a viable method to improved bond strength between zirconia ceramic core and veneering composites.
Purpose: This study was investigated the effect of multilayer zirconia block type and sintering method on fracture strength, micro structure and color of zirconia copings. Methods: Three kinds of multi-layered zirconia blocks were used to identify the effects of the kinds of multi-layered zirconia blocks and sintering methods on fracture strength and color reproducibility of zirconia copings. 60 Zirconia copings were fabricated and fracture strength, micro structure and color reproducibility were compared and evaluated. Results: In all the blocks, the CS group, which refers to the general sintering method had higher fracture strength of zirconia copings than the MS group that refers to the microwave sintering method(MCS/MMS; 2,107.5N/1,930.4N, DCS/DMS; 917.0N/879.1N, UCS/UMS; 2,256.9/2,050.7N). In relation to CIE $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ values of zirconia copings depending on the kinds of multi-layered zirconia blocks and sintering methods, the MS group using the microwave sintering method had lower brightness and chroma than the CS group using the general sintering method. Conclusion: In all the blocks, the CS group(general sintering) had higher fracture strength of zirconia copings than the MS group(microwave sintering). In relation to CIE $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ values of zirconia copings depending on the kinds of multilayered zirconia blocks and sintering methods, the MS group using the microwave sintering method had lower brightness and chroma than the CS group using the general sintering method.
The esthetic properties of zirconia receive increasing attention as its demand and application escalates. Thus, it is crucial to investigate how zirconia is esthetically different from other dental ceramics. In this study, we evaluated the translucency of zirconia and suggest a method to increase its translucency. We examined the shade of zirconia and offer its distinguishing features. Finally, we analyzed monolithic zirconia restorations to propose esthetic considerations in clinics.
To improve resistance in thermal shock of zirconia setter which is frequently and repeatedly exposed to high temperature, high degree of porosity and control of thermal expansion are needed for which the fused CSZ (CaO stabilized zirconia) is used to produce the zirconia setter. In the present study, the effects of sintering temperature, cool down condition, addition of CaO stabilizer, and addition of other additives on phase transition and thermal expansion behavior of the fabrication process of zirconia setter, were examined. The zirconia setter, fabricated with fused CSZ at 1550℃, exhibited 20.4 MPa of flexural strength, 6.8% of absorbance, and 27.9% of apparent porosity. The rapid change in thermal expansion of zirconia setter is observed at temperature around 800℃, and it was reduced by low firing temperature, slowed cooled down, and addition of CaO.

There are several factors affected fractures of full contour zirconia (FCZ) dental prosthesis in laboratory process. First, residual moisture can cause zirconia cracks. Complete dry is requisite before zirconia sintering to prevent zirconia cracks. Second, slow cooling rate is essential to prevent cracks during zirconia sintering process. Cracks in bridge pontic area, thick dental implant prosthesis can be prevented by slow cooling rate such as 3 degree Celsius per minute during zirconia sintering. Third, slow heating rate and slow cooling rate during staining and glazing procedure is necessary to inhibit thermal shock of sintered dental zirconia. Lower preheat temperature of porcelain furnace is recommended. Finally, using diamond disc to open embrasure can lead cracks.

In case of esthetic restorative procedure with zirconia restoration, we have to use resin cement because of not only just for retention but also esthetic reason. In such a clinical situation, we have to consider two bonding interfaces, one is tooth surface to resin cement and the other is zirconia surface to resin cement. There is well established bonding protocol between tooth surface to resin cement, but bonding protocol of zirconia surface to resin cement is still controversial. In scientific point of view, there are two mechanism for bonding of zirconia restoration.. One is mechanical retention and the other is chemical adhesion. However, we have three different options for bonding of zirconia restoration in clinical situation; 1) Tribo-chemical coating with silica and silane coupling agent 2) Zirconia primer with phosphate chemistry 3) Self-adhesive resin cement with phosphate chemistry.
Unstabilized Zirconia was added to basic composition under 44$mu extrm{m}$ of 57.80wt% Clay-22.20wt% Chamotte-20.00wt% Agalmatolite system. Here the amount and the particle size of Zirconia were 5-25wt% and -20${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ respectively and the body of these composition was first at 135$0^{\circ}C$. The results obtained from examining the properties of sintered body were as follows. 1. Firing linear shrinkage apparent density and bulk density apparent porosity and water absorption of the samples had the tend to increase according as the particle size of zirconia became larger and the amount of zirconia increased. 2. Modulus of rupture was inversely proportional to the particle size and the additive amount of zirconia, . Especially in case that the particle size of zirconia over 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and the additive amount of zirconia was 25wt% the modulus of rupture had shrunk drastically. 3. The maximum value of KIC was obtained at 20wt% additive amount of zirconia according to the each particle size of zirconia. Especially the highest value of KIC is 2, 173 M. Pa. M1/2 when the particle size of zirconia is 5~10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and the additive amount is 20wt%.
In this study, intermediate-mixed powders were prepared by loading zirconia powders initially in a ball-mill jar and loading alumina powders afterward; the initial-mixed powders were produced by loading zirconia and alumina powders together in the ball-mill jar. The effect of such differences in mixing method on the mechanical properties was investigated. In intermediate-mixed powders, the volume fraction of large particles slightly increased and, simultaneously, zirconia particles formed agglomerates that, due to early ball-mill loading of the zirconia powders only, were more dispersed than were the initial-mixed powders. For the intermediate-mixed powders, zirconia agglomerates were destroyed more quickly than were initial-mixed powders, so the number of dispersed zirconia particles rose and the inhibitory effect of densification due to the addition of a second phase was more obvious. In the microstructure of intermediate-mixed powders, zirconia grains were homogeneously dispersed and grain growth by coalescence was found to occur with increasing sintering temperature. For the initial-mixed powders, large zirconia grains formed by localized early-densification on the inside contacts of some zirconia agglomerates were observed in the early stages of sintering. The intermediate-mixed powders had slightly lower hardness values as a whole but higher fracture toughness compared to that of the initial-mixed powders.
