  • The feeding habits of John Dory (Zeus faber) were studied by examining the stomach contents of 317 specimens collected from January 2004 to December 2005 in the coastal waters off Gori, Korea. The standard length (SL) of the specimens ranged from 12 to 42 cm. Z. faber is a piscivore and consumes mainly teleost fish such as Psenopsis anomala, Trichiurus lepturus and Conger myriaster. Its diet also includes shrimp and cephalopods. Smaller individuals (<25 cm SL) consume shrimp and small fish such as Glossanodon semifasciatus. The proportion of these prey items decreases with increasing fish size, and this decrease is paralleled by increased consumption of lager fish such as Psenopsis anomala and Trichiurus lepturus. The prey size increases with Z. faber size.

  • The diet composition of john dory Zeus faber, was investigated using 266 specimens collected in the coastal waters of the South Sea, Korea. The specimens ranged in total length (TL) from 12.5 to 43.2 cm. The Z. faber fed mainly on Pisces and less often on Macrura. We further analyzed the data by dividing the specimens into five classes (<15.0 cm, 15.0-20.0 cm, 20.0-25.0 cm, 25.0-30.0 cm, ≥30.0 cm). The Z. faber diet shifted with size class from predominantly consuming Macrura to Pisces. The proportion of Macrura consumed decreased with increasing body size, whereas the consumption of Pisces increased gradually.

  • Background: Most fish undergo prey switch from juvenile to adult. It is thought that slightly different feeding habits occur among adult fishes due to growth, spawning, habitat change, and so on. Therefore, the diet of the John Dory Zeus faber (≥ 24 cm TL) was studied in the coastal waters of Korea by analysis of stomach contents, with comparison by season and size class of diet composition and prey diversity. Monthly samples were taken from February 2017 to January 2018. Results: The results showed that the John Dory was a piscivorous predator, and pisces had occupied 82.3% of IRI%. Trichiurus lepturus and Trachurus japonicus were important preys in all size classes and seasons. Diet composition differed among the size classes and seasons (Chi-square test, P < 0.05). As body size of Z. faber increased, the occurrence of benthic fish (Glyptocephalus stelleri) tended to increase. The seasonal prey composition also changed depending on the abundant species of each season. Conclusions: Z. faber is a piscivorous predator. The consumption habits of Z. faber appear to different results by their size and seasons. This study suggests that Z. faber could be considered an opportunistic predator.

  • The feeding habits of yellow goosefish Lophius litulon and John Dory Zeus faber were studied by analyzing the stomach contents of specimens collected in the South Sea of Korea. In total, 132 hauls were taken during six experimental trawl survey (Tamgu 1) cruises conducted on a seasonal basis (March 2005-October 2007). The main prey items of the two species were similar. Fishes and crustaceans were the most important prey, with neither species showing ontogenetic changes in preferred species. Specifically, Pennahia argentata was the preferred prey item of L. litulon, whereas Trichiurus lepturus and Engraulis japonicus were preferred by Z. faber. Larger Z. faber (>24 cm) preferred bigger prey such as T. lepturus and Larimichthys polyactis, while smaller Z. faber preferred E. japonicus and Acropoma japonicum.

  • In order to estimate the optimum harvesting mesh size of multispecies, the 24 species of catching data which were taken by fishing trial of trawl gear in Korean Southern Coast and East China Sea during 1991-1993 year were grouped and divided by the Cluster analysis method, considering first maturity length and body width, body height, body girth based on the first maturity length. With the same method, the above groups were subdivided by the potential escape such as possible escape index, range factor and selection factor. In case of the species devoid of selection parameters, these species were first subdivided by the use of possible escape index and length range factor. Next, the optimum harvesting mesh size of multispecies was properly classified according to the optimal mesh size of a fish estimated by first maturity length against selection factor. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Each optimum harvesting mesh size of Psenopsis anomala, Priacanthus macra-canthus, Trachurus japonicus, Argyrosomus argentatus was 71.1-79.5mm, and Saurida undosquamis was 65.5mm. 2. Each optimum harvesting mesh size of Scomber japonicus, Pseudosciaena crosea, Pseudosciaena Polyactis, Sebastes thompsoni, Doderleinia berycoides was 78.5-85.6mm, and Bembras japonicus, Sphyraena pinguis was 48.4-51.3mm. 3. Each optimum harvesting mesh size of Zeus faber, Pampus argenteus, Zenopsis nebulosan was 118.4-124.1mm, and Caranx equula was 91.4mm, and Thamnaconus modestus was 131.2mm, and Pagrus major was 149.4mm. 4. Each optimum harvesting mesh size of Upeneus bensasi, Callanthias japonicus, Sardinops melanosticata, Konosirus punctatus was 36.8-42.8mm, and Acropoma japonicum was 21.2mm, and Apogon lineatus was 26.3mm.

  • Fish species composition and abundance in the waters of nearby Nakdong River estuary were investigated non-continuously and seasonally by shrimp beam trawl in summer 2007, winter 2009, and from spring 2010 to autumn 2010. During the study period, total fish species were collected 92 species, 36 families in study area. Shannon index was 1.893~2.962, and evenness was 0.050~0.231. Fish species composition was shown interannually and seasonally variations in the waters of nearby Nakdong River estuary. We carryed out cluster analysis to contain the data in previous and current study. Fish species composition was divided 3 groups which were 1987~1988 and 1998, 2001~2002, and 2007~2008 and 2009~2010. Average and minimum length in this study was longer than its in previous studies, and length range in this study was wider than its in previous studies, too. Dominant fish increased individuals and weight per unit area in this study. Especially Lophius litulon, Raja kenojei, Eopsetta grigorjewi, and Zeus faber were much better than past 2002. Liparis tanakai, Repomucenus valenciennei and Leiognathus nuchalis were dominant fish in previous study, but those decreased individuals and weight per unit area in this study.
