  • Zernike moments have been one of the most commonly used feature vectors for recognizing rotated patterns due to its rotation invariant characteristics. In order to reduce its expensive computational cost, several methods have been proposed to lower the complexity. One of the methods proposed by mukundan and K. R. Ramakrishnan[1], however, is not rotation invariant. In this paper, we propose another method that not only reduces the computational cost but preserves the rotation invariant characteristics. In the experiment, we compare our method with others, in terms of computing time and the accuracy of moment feature at different rotational angle of an object in image.

  • In this paper, we propose a new shape similarity measure for M:N polygon pairs regardless of different object cardinalities in the pairs. The proposed method compares the projections of two shape functions onto Zernike polynomial basis functions, where the shape functions were obtained from each overall region of objects, thus not being affected by the cardinalities of object pairs. Moments with low-order basis functions describe global shape properties and those with high-order basis functions describe local shape properties. Therefore several moments up to a certain order where the original shapes were similarly reconstructed can efficiently describe the shape properties thus be used for shape comparison. The proposed method was applied for the building objects in the New address digital map and a car navigation map of Seoul area. Comparing to an overlapping ratio method, the proposed method's similarity is more robust to object cardinality.

  • In this paper, we propose a new composite feature consists of both color and shape information that are suitable for the task of character image retrieval. This approach extracts shape-based information using Zernike moments from Y image in YCbCr color space. Zernike moments can extract shape-based features that are invariant to rotation, translation, and scaling. We also extract color-based information from the DCT coefficients of Cr and Cb image. This approach is good method reflecting human visual property and is suitable for web application such as large image database system and animation because higher retrieval rate has been achieved using only 36 features. In experiment, this method is applied to 3,834 character images. We confirmed that this approach brought about excellent effect by ANMRR(Average of Normalized, Modified Retrieval Rank), which is used in the evaluation measure of MPEG-7 color descriptor and BEP(Bull's Eye Performance), which is used in evaluation measure of shape descriptor in character image retrieval.

  • In order to achieve scale- and rotation-invariance in recognizing unoccluded objects in binary images using Zernike moment features, an image of an object has often been normalized first by its zeroth-order moment (ZOM) or area. With elongated objects such as characters, a stroke width varies with the threshold value used, it becomes one or two pixels wider or thinner. The variations of the total area of the character becomes significant when the character is relatively thin with respect to its overall size, and the resulting normalized moment features are no longer reliable. This dilation/erosion effect is more severe when the object is not focused precisely. In this paper, we analyze the ZOM method and propose as a normalization method, the maximum enclosing circle (MEC) centered at the centroid of the character. We compare both the ZOM and MEC methods in their performance through various experiments.

  • This paper presents a performance evaluation of shape descriptors for gait analysis in case of silhouette sequence images. We used moment descriptors(MD), Fourier descriptors(FD) and Zernike descriptors(ZD) as a shape descriptor. To evaluate their performance, we firstly defined the performance index, that is, AI(asymmetry index) and PI(periodic index) based on the periodic property of the gait images. This is why they are represented by periodic parameters due to periodic gait images. This index means that how the shape is represented periodically. According to these indexes, we evaluated the data sets with periodic images, downloaded from internet. The results showed that Zernike descriptors had better performance of AI = 1.09 and PI = 2.21 than others. And in case of FD and ZD, it's efficient to implement the gait analysis with 5~10 parameters.

  • Since shape of an object in an image carries important information in contents based image retrieval (CBIR), many shape description methods have been proposed to retrieve images using shape information. Among the existing shape based image retrieval methods, the method which employs invariant Zernike moment desciptor (IZMD) showed better performance compared to other methods which employ traditional Zernike moments descriptor in CBIR. In this paper, we propose a new image retrieval method which applies invariant angular radial transform descriptor (IARTD) to obtain higher performance than the method which employs IZMD in CBIR. IARTD is a rotationally invariant feature which consists of magnitudes and alligned phases of angular radial transform coefficients. To produce rotationally invariant phase coefficients, a phase correction scheme is performed while extracting the IARTD. The distance between two IARTDs is defined by combining the differences of the magnitudes and the aligned phases. Through the experiment using MPEG-7 shape dataset, the average bull's eye performance (BEP) of the proposed method is 0.5806 while the average BEPs of the exsiting methods which employ IZMD and traditional ART are 0.4234 and 0.3574, respectively.

  • This paper presents a novel localization paradigm for mobile robots based on artificial and natural landmarks. A model-based object recognition method detects natural landmarks and conducts the global and topological localization. In addition, a metric localization method using artificial landmarks is fused to complement the deficiency of topology map and guide to action behavior. The recognition algorithm uses a modified local Zernike moments and a probabilistic voting method for the robust detection of objects in cluttered indoor environments. An artificial landmark is designed to have a three-dimensional multi-colored structure and the projection distortion of the structure encodes the distance and viewing direction of the robot. We demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed system through real world experiments using a mobile robot, KASIRI-III.

  • In this paper, we describe a new trademark retrieval system based upon the content or the shape of trademark. The system has an on-line graphical user interface for the World Wide Web (WWW) that allows user to provide a query in forms of a sketch or a visual image to search for similar trademarks from database. User interfaces for the WWW were implemented by utilizing HTML and Java applets. The query can occur in arbitrary size and orientation. A shape representation scheme invariant to scale and rotation was developed to measure the similarity between two trademarks using the magnitude of Zernike moments as a feature set. Performance evaluation has been carried out with a database of 3,000 trademarks. It takes only about 0.6 second for the retrieval on a 200 MHz Pentium PC. The average recall of the original one among top 30 candidates queried by noisy or deformed images was 100%.

  • Several methods which utilize the phase of Zernike moments (ZMs) to estimate the rotation angle have shown good performance in terms of accuracy. In this paper, we provides the performance comparison results of the existing rotation angle estimation methods based on ZMs and propose an extension of Revaud et al.'s method [1] which utilizes the phase of ZMs; the proposed method uses angular radial transform coefficients instead of ZMs and yields better performance than the ZMs based methods in terms of accuracy. A set of ART can describe angular variation of image more intensively than ZMs, it enables more accurate estimation of the rotation angle than ZMs. In the experiments, the proposed method outperforms ZMs based method. Comparisons were made in terms of the root mean square error vs. the coverage on MPEG-7 shape dataset.
