  • Encapsulation capacities $(V_{gas})$ of, $H_2,\;N_2,\;CO,\;CH_4$ and CO, for $Cs_{2.5}Na_{9.5}-A (C_s-A)$ and $Na_{12}$-A (Na-A) zeolites have been measured in order to understand the effect of molecular properties on the $V_{gas}$. With appropriate number of large blocking cations on the main windows of cavities in zeolite A, gas molecules can be encapsulated in both the ${\alpha}$ -and ${\beta}$-cages, resulting in much large $V_{gas}.\;V_{gas}$ is proportional to the encapsulation pressure (Pe) and is also dependent on the molecular properties of encapsulated gases themselves, especially on intermolecular forces originated from the quadrupole moments of molecules in the molecular-dimensioned cavities of zeolite A. At the low range of Pe, molecules with larger $V_{gas}$ and intermolecular forces apparently have smaller increasing tendencies of $V_{gas}$ upon increases in Pe, showing a linear relationship between the tendencies and intermolecular forces rather than their sizes. Interactions between encapsulated molecules of $CH_4$ and framework of Cs-A have been estimated and they seem to depend on the number of encapsulated molecules per unit cell. On the basis of calculated density of $CO_2$, presence of liquid-like phase for the encapsulated molecules in the molecular dimensioned cavities of zeolite A is postulated.

  • This study was carried out easily to determine the refreshing time of natural Zeolite used for the clearing of Livestock waste water and to investigate the relationship between EC of solution and adsorption amount on Zeolite. During the adsorption reaction, EC of supernatant solution decreased till the equilibrium was reached and kept a constant level after it. EC was greatly decreased with the concentration of solution and the magnitude of adsorbent. Decrease in EC of suspension was found to be lesser in addition of Na-Zeolite than Ca-Zeolite. EC change of Livestock waste water was shown to be similar tendency to that of the simulated waste water. On the cumulative adsorption isotherm, the EC of suspension increased until the EC value of the initial solution as the increase in treatment times. Therefore, it is apparent that the exchange point of natural zeolite should be in the vicinity of the EC value of initial waste water.

  • A and 2SM-5 type zeoli tic crystal films were synthesized on porous supports from the reaction mixture of 1.9 ${SiO}_2$1.5 $Na_20-Al_2O_3-40$ $H_20$ and $Si0_2$-0.l3 $Na_2O$-52 $H_20$-O.l2 TPAOH composition, respectively. The zeolite films were characterized by XRD and SEM. The 2SM -5 crystals grown on the porous matrix were very closely bound together. It was so difficult to obtain the perfectly intergrown crystals in the case of A-type zeolite and this crystal was transformed into P-type zeolite membrane with a prolonged reaction time. The densely intergrown A type zeolite crystal membrane could be also synthesized by the hydrothermal treatment at 100$^{\cirt}C$ after pressing the reaction mixture without addition of water. The pervaporation performance of the synthesized porous inorganic membranes was investigated for alcohol and water mixtures. A-type zeolite membrane crystallized as a thin film showed the selective \'Jermeability of water from the mixtures through the molecular sieving activity of micropores.

  • The adsorption characteristics of Sr ions and Cs ions in single and binary solution by zeolite A were investigated in batch experiment. The adsorption rate of Sr ions and Cs ions by zeolite A obeyed pseudo-second-order kinetic model in single and binary solution. The initial adsorption rates (h) and adsorption capacities of both ions obtained from pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the values were decreased with increasing concentration of the competitive ions (0~1.5 mM). Also, adsorption isotherm data in binary solution were well fitted to the extended Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption capacities of Sr and Cs calculated from the model were 1.78 mmol/g and 1.64 mmol/g, respectively. The adsorption of Sr and Cs ions by zeolite A was carried out in the presence of other cations such as $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$. The results showed that the zeolite A can maintain a relatively high adsorption capacity for Sr and Cs ions and exhibits a high selectivity in the presence of competitive cations. The effect of competition had an order of $Ca^{2+}$ > $K^+$ > $Mg^{2+}$ > $Na^+$ for Sr ions and $K^+$ > $Ca^{2+}$ > $Na^+$ > $Mg^{2+}$ for Cs ions at the same cation concentration.

  • The desorption characteristics of NaY zeolite, of which Si/Al ratio is 2.36, was measured at 25${\circ}$C and 150${\circ}$C so as to be used practically as a adsorbent for separation of sulfur oxides from flue gas, for which adsorption and desorption cycles at 25${\circ}$C were repeated four times and that at 150${\circ}$C was done one time. As a result it took 30.8 at 150${\circ}$C and 164.1 minutes in average at 25${\circ}$C to reach equilibrium condition. It means that regeneration of the NaY zeolite can be done below 150${\circ}$C so that zeolite can be used for flue gas desulfurization.

  • In this study, propylene/propane separation mechanism through NaY zeolite membrane was investigated. As permeation temperature increased, both propylene and propane permeances increased, saturated and decreased again, and a maximum selectivity was shown at around 50 to $60^{\circ}C$. Propane permeance in mixed gas experiment was much smaller than that in single gas experiment, and propylene/propane mixed gas selectivity was much larger than single gas permselectivity. As permeation time increased in transient permeation experiment, propylene permeance initially increased and saturated, while propane permeance decreased and saturated. All the experimental results announced that propylene/propane separation through NaY zeolite membrane was from preferentially adsorbed propylene molecules. The adsorbed propylene molecules efficiently prevented propane molecules from permeating through the membrane, and sufae diffused through the membrane. NaY zeolite capillary membrane prepared in the present study showed a high mixed gas selectivity of 12 and high propylene permeance of 497 GPU for a propylene/propane (89 : 11) mixture at $50^{\circ}C$ and 4 bar. Therefore, it was concluded that NaY zeolite membrane is one of promising membrane materials for propylene/propane separation due to the low cost and high separation performance.

  • Loss of cationic zeolites saturated with different ions, sodium, potasium, ammonium, magnesium and calcium ions, and changes of hydraulic conductivity were investigated in labortory. The 0.5 to 1mm sands and the zeolite particles passed 0.1mm sieve were used in the column tests. The amount of zeolite particle loss was in order of Na- > K- > $NH_4-$ saturated zeolites, and little loss was observed from Mg and Ca saturated zeolites. The loss of zeolite particles was mainly due to dispersion in solution, which was prominant when 0.01N dilute mono ionic solution and distilled water were percolated. The results also showed that the changes in hydraulic conductivity were greater in the columns where the loss of dispersed zeolite particles was higher.

  • In this study, zeolite was synthesized by hydrothermal, fusion, and fusion/hydrothermal methods with fly ash, coal fly ash, and a waste catalyst discharged from thermal power plants and incinerator in Ulsan area. Coal fly ashes (CFAs) and a waste catalyst containing amounts of $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ ranging from 60.29 to 89.62 wt%. CFAs were mainly composed of quartz and mullite which were assayed by a XRD pattern. Zeolite could be synthesized by CFAs and the waste catalyst when all methods were used. Na-A zeolite (Z-C1, Z-C2, and Z-W5) are mainly synthesized by the fusion method from CFAs and the waste catalyst. Z-C1 and Z-C2 formed by-products, calcite peaks, which is caused by the content of CaO in CFAs and the addition of $Na_2CO_3$ for a synthetic process.

  • Highly porous amorphous silica obtained from a serpentine mineral by hydrochloric acid treatment was used to produce a zeolite A through the hydrothermal reaction under atmospheric pressure. An optimum synthesis condition of the zeolite A was achieved at $80^{\circ}C$ for two hours with a mole ratio of $Na_2O/SiO_2$1.5. Additionally, it was found that a hydroxysodalite zeolite was formed under the experimental conditions over the reaction temperature of $80^{\circ}C$ and the reaction time of 120 minutes even though the crystallization of zeolite proceeds rapidly as the reaction temperature and the alkalinity becomes higher.

  • A zeolite membrane shows better thermal, mechanical and chemical stabilities than a polymer membrane. Water was separated from iso-propyl alcohol (IPA)/water mixtures by pervaporation using the NaY zeolite membrane synthesized in the laboratory. The effects of a mole fraction of IPA in the feed solution and an operating temperature were studied on the permeation flux behavior and the separation factor of water with respect to IPA. As a mole fraction of IPA increased, the water flux as well as the separation factor decreased. As the experimental temperature increased, the water permeation flux increased while the separation factor decreased. For IPA/water binary mixtures, the water flukes through the NaY zeolite membrane were observed to be $1.9{\times}10^2{\sim}3.5{\times}10^3\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ and the separation factors were found to be $7.0{\times}10^2{\sim}2.0{\times}10^4$.
