This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of surface charge of major clay minerals in Korea. The charge characteristics of clay minerals were studied by measuring the retention of $NH^+_4$, $Ca^{2+}$ and $Cl^-$ as a function of ionic strength. The dominant clay minerals of Zeolite, Bentonite and Kaolin were oriented as Clinoptilolite+Mordenite, Montmorillonite and Halloysite, respectively. At the same ionic strength, Montmorillonite and Halloysite adsorbed some more $Ca^{2+}$ than $NH^+_4$, whereas Zeolite adsorbed more $NH^+_4$ than $Ca^{2+}$. All the three minerals adsorbed more ions with higher ionic strength and the C.F.C was larger in the order of Halloysite < Montmorillonite < Zeolite. Since the total surface area by EGME rentention was shown to be in the order of Halloysite < Zeolite < Montmorillonite, therefore, the charge density was calculated to be in the order of Montmorillonite < Halloysite < Zeolite.
The purpose of this study is to solve the problem of nutrient removal due to rapid hydraulic retention time (HRT) variation in small size private sewage treatment facility and to have better effluent quality by using natural zeolite as a coagulant aid. The experiments were conducted by applying different conditions of HRT, coagulant, and zeolite dosages. As an experimental result, $TBOD_{5}$, TSS, and TP removal efficiencies were 64.9%, 94.5%, and 98.8% at co-injection with zeolite. Overall removal efficiencies of $TBOD_{5}$, TSS, and TP have improved 15.7, 28.7, 6.1%, respectively. This result shows that zeolite addition could improve flocculation, increase setting velocity, and thus have better treatment. Therefore the use of zeolite as a coagulant aid can be useful in small size private sewage treatment facility, where especially extra nutrient removal is required to meet the legal standard for discharge.
Adsorption characteristics of benzene by zeolite were investigated using irradiating microwave. Experimental apparatus was applied to a U-type fix-bed column equipped with microwave system. Zeolite, itself, seems to be inappropriated to remove benzene because of a hygroscopic property, Microwave irradiation to zeolite, however, brings about decreasing $H_{2}O$ adsorption and increasing benzene adsorption. This causes that the dipole material such as $H_{2}O$ was vibrated and heated by irradiation of microwave and desorbed from zeolite. And then, benzene starts to be absorbed by zeolite. In this study, the results showed that the selective adsorption of benzene was occurred by the microwave irradiation and the adsorption capacity of benzene was increased by increasing microwave energy. As a results, it was found that the zeolite could be used to adsorb benzene with microwave and this method make it feasible simultaneously to adsorb and desorb benzene.

Zeolite A was prepared from coal fly ash upon NaOH fusion treatment, followed by hydrothermal treatment. The effects of treatment conditions such as NaOH/ash ratio, fusion temperature, the amount of sodium aluminate added, hydrothermal treatment temperature and time on the type and the crystallinity of zeolites were investigated. The optimal NaOH/ash weight ratio and fusion temperature to produce high crystalline zeolite A were 1.2 and $550^{\circ}C$, respectively. The dissolution of $Si^{4+}$ and $Al^{3+}$ from the fused fly ash was not affected by stirring time. The type of synthetic zeolites was found to be dependent on the amount of sodium aluminate added. The low amount of sodium aluminate favored zeolite X, while a single phase zeolite A was produced by increasing the amount sodium aluminate. Zeolite A was transformed into hydroxysodalite with increasing hydrothermal treatment time and temperature. A high crystalline zeolite A could be obtained by decreasing the temperature increasing time up to the reaction temperature.
This study was conducted to find out the effect of natural zeolite addition on the purification of livestock farming wastewater and the application of zeolite used for purification of livestock farming wastewater on growth of sudangrass. In a semi-continuous process it was found that COD, $NH_4-N$, $NO_3-N$ and T-N contents in the effluent solution decreased with the treatment of natural zeolite. The zeolite addition was effective on the purification of livestock farming wastewater. By the results of application for sudangrass cultivation, the accumulative N-uptake contents by sudangrass were lower than that of control(35kg/10a) at early growth stage, but were higher at the late growth stage.
This study is for the application of functional antibacterial packaging to fresh food. Zeolite/Zinc-polypeptide was coated on PP film at concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15%, degree of dispersion was verified through FESEM and FT-IR analysis. In addition, the antibacterial and antifungal properties of the films were analyzed according to the control group and the concentration of coating materials. As a result, the degree of dispersion of coating material was irregular but wide, depending on the concentration of Zeolite/Zinc-polypeptide on the surface of PP film. The antibacterial effect against E. coli was over 99.9%, and the growth of R. oryzae was inhibited about 70%. Therefore, it was confirmed that Zeolite/Zinc-polypeptide had antibacterial and antifungal properties against E. coli and R. oryzae even after coated on PP film. In conclusion, Zeolite/Zinc-polypeptide coating film is expected to be effective in preventing corruption and improving the shelf life of fresh food as a functional packaging material. In order to be applied to various fresh foods in the future, storage experiments are additionally required with temperature and humidity conditions according to fresh foods.

Generally, hydroxyapatite(HAp), zeolite, carbon molecular sieve , activated carbon and alumina are used as heavy metal ions adsorption materials. Among those adsorption materials, HAp which has good positive ion-exchange ability with metal ion, and zeolite are utilized in wastewater treatment. Most of water pollutions are caused by hazardous heavy metals ions as well as bacteria in waste water. In this study, a adsorption materials (HAP and zeolite) are ion-exchanged with a well known antimicrobial metal ions, such as $Ag^+,\;Cu^{2+},\;and\;Zn^{2+}$, in order to give a adsorption of heavy metal ions and a killing effects of bacteria. The antimicrobial effects of adsorption materials are observed using by E. Coli. The results show that there is a complete antimicrobial effect in the adsorption materials with $Ag^+$ at the concentration of $1{\times}10^{-4}$cell/$m\ell$ of E. Coli until 24 hours. However, there is not good antimicrobial effects in the adsorption materials with $Cu^{2+},\;and\;Zn^{2+}$ substitution. Feng et. al. showed the denaturation effects of silver ions which induces the condensed DNA molecules and losing their replication abilities.
Concrete is one of the most widely used construction materials in the world. Producing economical and durable concrete is possible by employing pozzolanic materials. The aim of this study is to underline the possibility of the utilization of natural zeolite in producing concrete and investigate its effects basically on the strength and durability of concrete. In the production of concrete mixes, Portland cement was replaced by the natural zeolite at ratios of 0%, 10%, 15%, and 20% by weight. Concretes were produced with total binder contents of $300kg/m^3$ and $400kg/m^3$, but with a constant water to cement ratio of 0.60. In addition to compressive and flexural strength measurements, freeze-thaw and high temperature resistance measurements, rapid chloride permeability, and capillary water absorption tests were performed on the concrete mixes. Compared to the rest mixes, concrete mixes containing 10% zeolite yielded in with the highest compressive and flexural strengths. The rapid chloride permeability and the capillary measurements were decreased as the natural zeolite replacement was increased. Freeze-thaw resistance also improved significantly as the replacement ratio of zeolite was increased. Under the effect of elevated temperature, natural zeolite incorporated concretes with lower binder content yielded higher compressive strength. However, the compressive strengths of concretes with higher binder content after elevated temperature effect were found to be lower than the reference concrete.

Application of photocatalytic nanoparticles has been recently gaining an increased attention as air purifying material for sustainable urban development. The present work reports the photocatalytic removal of gaseous phase nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) using $TiO_2$-coated zeolite to be applied as a filter media for the urban green infrastructure such as raingardens. The $TiO_2$-coated zeolite was synthesized by simple wet chemistry method and tested in a continuous-flow photo-reactor for its removal efficiency of $NO_x$ under different conditions of the weight percentage of $TiO_2$ coated on the zeolite, and gas retention time. The removal efficiency of $NO_x$ in general increased as the weight percentage of $TiO_2$ coated on the zeolite increased up to 15-20%. Greater than 90% of $NO_x$ was removed at a retention time of one minute using the $TiO_2$-coated zeolite ($TiO_2$ weight percentage = 20%). Overall, $TiO_2$-coated zeolite showed greater efficiency of $NO_x$ removal compared to $TiO_2$ powder probably by providing additional reaction sites from the porous structure of zeolite. It was presumed that the degradation of $NO_x$ is attributed to both the physical adsorption and photocatalytic oxidation that could simultaneously occur at the catalyst surface.
This study was carried out easily to determine the refreshing time of natural Zeolite used for the clearing of Livestock waste water and to investigate the relationship between EC of solution and adsorption amount on Zeolite. During the adsorption reaction, EC of supernatant solution decreased till the equilibrium was reached and kept a constant level after it. EC was greatly decreased with the concentration of solution and the magnitude of adsorbent. Decrease in EC of suspension was found to be lesser in addition of Na-Zeolite than Ca-Zeolite. EC change of Livestock waste water was shown to be similar tendency to that of the simulated waste water. On the cumulative adsorption isotherm, the EC of suspension increased until the EC value of the initial solution as the increase in treatment times. Therefore, it is apparent that the exchange point of natural zeolite should be in the vicinity of the EC value of initial waste water.
